On a Raw Diet - Dexter Robson

Follow Dexter Robson as he takes you through some of his local trails on Salt Spring Island. The island is home to a diverse community of artists, labourers, agricultural producers, and a subset of mountain bikers. The local mountain bike community is primarily cross-country oriented, and the trails demonstrate this physical riding style.

Ehren Mcphee Photo

The physicality involved in accessing the trails coupled with the inaccessibility of Salt Spring creates a unique environment free of other riders. A benefit of island life is a climate moderated by the ocean, leading to warmer temperatures. Salt Spring is also in the rain shadow of Vancouver Island, so expect the trails to be relatively dry.

Not smooth at all, it just looks like guy is trying too hard. riding would be smoother and faster if he wasn't planting his foot every other turn. Just my two cents

 Sorry dude - Dexter

@faultlinetv: you would probably lose me quick as shit on those trails so I shouldnt really run my mouth.

@faultlinetv: I'm just jealous I'm not out riding those sick trails, thanks for the edit

Pro tips from weebleswobbles, the internet mtb skills coach ????
  • 9 3
Just looked like it was too much bike for that trail. If he had been on a spyder is would have been better, I think.
  • 4 0
The riding is ok but for me the trail leaves a lot to desire. I wish I could unclip and clip back that fast... I see that as a good thing!!!

Although the edit was shaky... I think that's the point when the title states: "On a Raw Diet". It's good to see something different.

@zombiejack33: hellz yea naw I never understood why people threw their leg out like they were riding a supercross race or some shit. Just slows you down
  • 3 5
@faultlinetv: you should pedal less and pump more. clearly faster to make full use of the relief and take it as an advantage for going faster by pumping
  • 8 5
Ya maybe but he's still faster than you...

@headshot: All these dudes are SAVAGE - Dexter
  • 3 1
@faultlinetv: not all, it was a good video for sure, I can relate to it more than say, a full on downhill huck fest.
  • 13 3
@RedBurn: You're right! You're probably faster than me! Too bad we'll never know! - Dexter

www.pinkbike.com/video/454884 sick edit.
  • 3 1
@faultlinetv: dude, what is your height? This bike looks huge. I myself was allways shunned 29 because I'm 5'4". Never tried it, though.
  • 5 0
Thats what raw means to me. These are XC trails, and this guy is going balls to the wall trying to get his schralp on..
  • 3 2
@faultlinetv: i'll tell you when i come to canada to catch up Smile one day hopefully ! Thanks for sharing i appreciate it!!

Well said he reminds me of the kid at school flying around with coke can trapped in his back wheel pretending to be a motorbike to impress the girls, oh shit hang on.....I was that douchebag at school
  • 1 0
@faultlinetv: See you guys are missing shirtless pumptrack riding like his edit. Haters gonna hate.
  • 4 0
That Intense frame just sucks so he had to work extra hard! P.S. I've got one for sale!
  • 2 0
Everyone is a critic Dexter great vid. peeps be jaded by the millions of youtube footage of giant hits. I appreciate the riding on both sides.
weebleswobbles - Actually when there are no burms and leafs making it lose you can commit to more corner speed by taking a foot off IMO...

Thread jack- why does the enduro world want the fresh cut tracks these days? whats wrong with all the fantastic built trails with features etc to reward the ballsy rider vs the guy that can pedal the most?
  • 2 0
@logic007:I see your logic 007, I would think taking your foot off means you are less committed to the speed and shape of the berm/corner and aren't trusting your tires to bite at the proper time. The foot out means you are prepared to catch yourself but it rarely translates to more speed. Maybe the phrase foot out flat out is an oxymoron? Maybe I'm all wrong
  • 3 0
@logic007: I appreciate the words! That trail is a hell of a lot of fun but really requires cardio!
  • 4 0
@weebleswobbles: There are no berms in this entire video, the corners certainly needed a foot out to get around, plus I wasn't racing and I wanted to have some fun Wink .
  • 3 0
@faultlinetv: keep shredding and I will see you on the hill. Are you doing any of BME race series this year? www.bigmountainenduro.com/schedule/schedule ?? Im in for my 2nd season of mens am.

maybe weebles can show up and wobbles his ars on the bike and start making a case for his theory. The Santa fe race will have plenty of bermless, tight, LOOSE corners! All good banter folks. It's definitely January with not much biking in the future hence the bored folks like me plucking away on the boards Smile
  • 1 1
@logic007: haha it would be more like wobbles I'm no racer these days I just like to get out for rides in the woods with my dog, but you never know maybe
  • 1 1
the wheels are just too big for this guy.
  • 1 0
LOL That was funny on raw diet ? Right eat red meat!
  • 1 0
This is the top comment? @weebleswobbles wheres your mixtape fam?

I'd say those trails looked and sounded slow.
  • 1 0
 @triptex: what? ...OK?... Yea!
  • 1 0
 Yea no eh?
  • 1 0
@weebleswobbles: I like you and your user name. for real bro!
  • 1 0
@logic007: thanks man although I won't lie I do fall down on occasion but it's when no one is watching. Most of what I post is because it amuses me, not trying to hate on anyone else, really if it's a bicycle with two wheels (no motor) and it makes you smile when you ride it, you are allright in my book Living in Norcal, and I'm always down to ride

 Editing: Very good
The filming: good.
Riding: pretty good.
Trail: Clearly too much pedaling

You guys just need to get a track with some vertical.

Need that raw diet to pedal these trails ???? - Dexter

BC is flat and boring, you should stay away.
  • 29 4
That's too much pedalling? Then why ride mountain bikes?

 @CircusMaximus: its called shuttling
  • 12 0
@jkramer1: I appreciate how he pumps and pedals his way on a regular woods trail. It's so, well, relatable.
  • 1 3
@DHsender4life: @circusmaximus both you guys list pemby as favorite trails how do those trails compare to this?
  • 2 0
Just put the guy you guys signed yesterday. he knows how.
  • 4 3
 some people love pedalling!! Wierdo's.
  • 2 0
 @kerberos: My thoughts exactly!
  • 4 0
I guess that answers my question: There's riding on Salt spring?
  • 1 2
@kerberos: he's having to pump way to hard on that bike's front end. Not sure if it's the trail, bike, or the rider. But that looks a little too much like me riding. Wink
  • 1 0
 @Loche: yep sucks out here
  • 3 0
Upon retrospect, I think the reason that this video did not stand out was because it was far too close to nearly all of my trail rides. Videos these days seem to be saturated with huge roost shots and big jumps, and any video without that seems underwhelming as a result. Kudos for going out an making this though, the video and sound quality was spot on.
  • 4 1
We've got snow on all the mountains... Tis winter after all. Ride what you can, film what you can
  • 1 1
He's not on a downhill bike.
  • 2 0
That place looks perfect for riding with my dog!
  • 26 1
Maybe in the minority, but I thought this vid was refreshingly different from the vast majority of Pinkbike vids. Sure its not as shreddy or gnarly as bomber DH stuff, but its nice to see someone have to put a pedal down every once in a while........you know......like I do every time I ride
  • 12 1
God damn, i love that color scheme and the layout. Seeing a hardtail on this trail woulda been sweet.
  • 6 0
 nsmb.com/hardtail-hoonery-darren-evans

Here ya go. Need hardtail action more than I like to admit. Wonky, fast hardtail 29er shredding. Can't afford a second bike (I wish a 29er SS) so I watch this shiz and every video on Chromags website, constantly
  • 1 0
 @slayersxc17: that was rowdy
  • 1 0
@slayersxc17: HAHAHA that made my day, dude was squatting so hard.
  • 6 0
I've watched most of Faultlines edits, so when I watched this I said "He must be trying something different". Read the text and that it is more pedally and it made sense.

I should read the preface more often, then I'd have realized he was working his arse off...which is what most trail rides are.
  • 6 1
Why does everybody on here have to be so critical? This is a video of somebody having fun shredding their bike around in the woods. That's entirely the reason I ride bikes. Having fun and getting loose. Keep it up!
  • 2 0
because this comment section is to talk about what you think
  • 8 2
 Mildly pinned...trying too hard maybe?
  • 6 0
It was a bit 'blair witch' like.
  • 3 0
I had the same thought go through my head. Shaky-cam style made me nauseous.
  • 1 0
@bikekrieg: You just don't understand riding bikes. Dexter is clearly the best at it. #goodatbikingwell

That was music to my ears.

Channel Ridge trails? I once spent a summer on salt Spring island. Mostly hiking trails and a few hidden riding spots. Lots of short steep climbs in channel ridge, really gets you in great shape.
  • 3 0
all the excessive foot slides lol I was not sure if this was a joke or what?
  • 1 0
You know what's a joke? How much better Dext is than you could ever hope to be. And yet you still run your mouth?
  • 1 0
Who cares what other's think. Looks like your out there having fun and whatnot. At least you were ballsy enough to make a video and post it on PB. Plus, the haters took the time to watch the video. LOL! Keep on riding!
  • 3 0
I don't understand why he's pushing his bike at 1:00?!?!
  • 1 0
 big hill hahah
  • 3 0
That bike looks like a 29er
  • 3 0
 Rad!
  • 4 2
 That was far too alkaline
  • 4 2
Should have called it the PH diet?
  • 13 13
That was just boring. A video where the guy looks like he's trying like crazy, but still looks slow and awkward is just annoying
  • 3 1
This made front page ? Dope bike... weak ridding and edit !
  • 1 0
but i appreciate the riding and the stoke and his attempt at bringing us something different for sure.
  • 3 1
 How I imagine dentists ride.
  • 1 0
@faultlinetv dont worry dude, people on here will criticize no matter what. Was it fun? If yes, then you win.
  • 2 2
seems almost unnatural with out music and sound effects. we've got used to it. we need more raw edits.
  • 2 0
 What was that?
  • 2 0
 sauce's kinda weak...
  • 1 2
It is not easy to have downhill flow on undulating terrain with tricky flat turns. I would love to ride these trails.
  • 1 0
 Vegan approved
  • 2 1
 Bailed after one minute
  • 1 1
Those trails are so XC that he was pushing his bike "uphill"
  • 1 1
All jokes aside it was pretty rad
  • 3 4
Sick juliana!...good to see ur not ridn bikes based on ur private parts.
