Video: Jordi Explains the Purpose of Valves in a Shock in the Latest 'Dialed' Episode

May 29, 2020 at 15:58
by FOX Factory

In Episode 20 of Season Two, Jordi breaks down a shock valve assembly and explains the basic purpose of valves (shims).

bigquotesFor the very basic, on compression, you have your compression ports and you have that first valve. All that's happening is, as the shock moves, oil is going through these holes and pushing against this little piece of metal. That's most of what creates damping. So, the more of these valves you put on there, the more damping you're going to build.-Jordi

great episode, but having to watch segments of it through someone elses laptop was annoying.

@whatyousaid I was more distracted by him calling shims 'valves' all the way through.

 @kittenjuice: her not wrong

@clink83: @kittenjuice a shim stack is a type of valve.

That was a solid video. I think it is a great kickoff to get a bit more technical now that you covered the basics. A few things come to mind. 1. Showing:explaining how adjustments a rider makes externally impact the oil flow (compression/rebound). Especially the relationship between adjustments, how one affects the other(s) and why ( show the internals exactly the way Jordi did ). 2. I’d love to see examples from too dh racers from previous years to help relate the application of base settings, dyno and then real world qualitative testing and then full circle. ( dyno ). 3. Future around emerging technologies... ( or old ) like dynamic / speed sensitive valving / active suspension and even futures where data can be utilized in near real time. E.g. geo specific, temperature, pressure, speed, torq etc. I can’t get enough of this !!

Who cares what their reasons are, I'm one facinated engineer. Keep these videos coming :-)

I ride a Formula Selva fork, it is awesome, you can change the CTS in about two minutes. So you can custom tune the compression way quicker.

Fox starting to show dyno chart of their shock. Is this a new era in transparency? Or just treats for nerds?
  • 6 0
Even "real" dyno charts instead of polished as **** marketing graphs made up with Photoshop Wink
  • 1 0
Right now its treats for nerds. Even experienced riders can't really tell you in detail what a particular compression tune does in terms of what happens at the contact patch, they just know what feels right and what doesn't, and really, thats the part about suspension tune that is the most important.

I personally want to see some IMU data from on-bike testing when someone says "component x does y better".

So basically a shock dyno is the offspring of a f!ckmachine and a PC.
  • 1 0
Maybe a F-machine is the offspring of a dyno? Jordy, can you confirm?!

Is it possible to get different tune configurations? Does fox or rockshox provide this? I could see reducing rebound damping for lighter riders in my family. For example for a light tune you need “these sizes” in this order.
  • 1 0
Fox will do a custom tune for you

The DHX2 Shock in the video has a gigantic rebound range, I dynoed it recently and was surprised how much useful spread I found in there. Even for quite light riders the base adjuster range is (normally) sufficient but you can still change the shim stack behind the VVC system.

It is a very good shock. For the shim based shocks you can get different tunes through FOX Service Centers or the usual suspends from push to avalanche.

There is a software called shim restackor, you can plug in the numbers and see what individual shims do. Motorcycle Supension bible also is a good reference.

Does it ever get to the point for pro riders (since Fox sponsors such a wide range) that Jordi has to change/modify the actual damper piston/ports or us a different weight oil?
  • 3 0
Pretty much everytime they mention they prepared a *special* shock for a rider. It is either:

A) prototype unit in development phase that will be released next april with N+1 modelyear markings
B) custom shimstack to change when low/high overlap or change - and how much, maybe diff oil
C) placebo to keep riders happy that Jordi did something good for them

 Bring back elastomer!!

I love the song at the end of these. Probably written, produced and performed all by Jordi

same, the music at the begin and end is pretty cool

Can you go more in to detail to playing with your stacks.....split stacks.....what happens with changing the # in your stack.
  • 1 0
Pick a copy of motorcycle suspension bible

This is bringing back bad memories of having to rebuild my shock after two from my stack snapped last week. Went in for a BB replacement, ended up with a new chain, cassette, retensioned wheel, and a rebuilt shock.

these not a rehash of the Tuesday tune?

That is a lot of bits inside your shocks, hope that get all the bits back in same place when giving them a service?

Hansel is so hot right now.

Whats the tune and who by that plays at the beginning of these dialed episodes ?

I really enjoyed this video, very informative, Jordi puts in lay-mans terms, more please....

you screwed me now.... I need a Dyno bench now!!!!!

Is it weird I can identify Jordie from his forearms?

 Best episode so far.

There's a guy named steve @vorsprungsuspension who fixes fox's shit for quite some time now...
  • 3 1
And if Steve made a shock someone else would start a business to "fix" his shit too. Making good suspension is difficult and there's no perfect product.
  • 1 1
@ActualSize: I doubt it, and most certainly will not be fox fixing it. Like ext
  • 2 1
@adespotoskyli: Absolutely, it´s not a rocket science but it´s pretty hard when your top priority is profit not performance.
  • 1 0
@Mondbiker: my point exactly, we should pay attention to those who actually work on performance, not those who launch a new fork every 6 months claiming is better than ever.
  • 2 0
@Mondbiker: Lol yes fox is just pumping out garbage and reaping in the cash. That's how you run a business.
