It's been an amazing year for British sporting achievements and Rachel Atherton has arguably contributed to raising the profile of downhill mountain biking more than anyone else in the UK through her domination on the UCI World Cup scene. Rachel has ended her season with a treasure-trove of trophies including the UCI World Championship win, the UCI World Series Overall, and the British National Championship title. Rachel secured four individual UCI World Cup wins which took her to a new record of achievement by being the most awarded British mountain biker in the history of the sport with a total on 19 UCI World Cup wins to her name.
Recently, we’ve seen some long overdue coverage for downhill mountain biking creeping in to the mainstream with exposure through Rachel’s guest appearances on the BBC’s Saturday Sports Day, BT Sport's Panel Show, and BBC1’s Supersized Earth. She’s been featured in the Sunday Times Sports Section, appeared with brother Dan in the Relative Values section of the Sunday Times magazine and was even mentioned on Radio 2 Breakfast Show. The coverage looks set to continue with a scheduled slots on Sky Sports, BT Sports and ITV Wales.
We’d love to see Rachel and our sport as a whole gain the recognition they deserve and there's a great opportunity to do that by helping to nominate Rachel for both 'The Sunday Times and Sky Sports Sportswomen of the Year 2013' and 'BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2013'.The 2013 Sunday Times and Sky Sports Sportswomen of the Year Awards
