It's been an amazing year for British sporting achievements and Rachel Atherton has arguably contributed to raising the profile of downhill mountain biking more than anyone else in the UK through her domination on the UCI World Cup scene. Rachel has ended her season with a treasure-trove of trophies including the UCI World Championship win, the UCI World Series Overall, and the British National Championship title. Rachel secured four individual UCI World Cup wins which took her to a new record of achievement by being the most awarded British mountain biker in the history of the sport with a total on 19 UCI World Cup wins to her name.

Recently, we’ve seen some long overdue coverage for downhill mountain biking creeping in to the mainstream with exposure through Rachel’s guest appearances on the BBC’s Saturday Sports Day, BT Sport's Panel Show, and BBC1’s Supersized Earth. She’s been featured in the Sunday Times Sports Section, appeared with brother Dan in the Relative Values section of the Sunday Times magazine and was even mentioned on Radio 2 Breakfast Show. The coverage looks set to continue with a scheduled slots on Sky Sports, BT Sports and ITV Wales.

We’d love to see Rachel and our sport as a whole gain the recognition they deserve and there's a great opportunity to do that by helping to nominate Rachel for both 'The Sunday Times and Sky Sports Sportswomen of the Year 2013' and 'BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2013'.

The 2013 Sunday Times and Sky Sports Sportswomen of the Year Awards
To nominate Rachel, please visit the Awards website to cast your vote. Remember, only the weight of your support will get Rachel onto the shortlist of ten. The online nomination process will close at midnight on Monday November 4th, 2013. By nominating you can opt in to the prize draw for the chance to win a pair of tickets to attend the star-studded Awards show at Sky Sports' studio in London on Thursday 5th December.

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2013
The BBC 'SPOTY' nomination process works differently. A panel of ten judges will draw up a shortlist by the beginning of November - so Rachel needs your help in a big way - with your tweets (using the @BBCSPOTY and @rachelatherton handles and #SPOTY hashtag), your Facebook posts, and letters to members of the panel to draw attention to Rachel and her fantastic achievements this year! You can find out more about the Awards and check out who makes up this year’s panel at by visiting the BBC SPOTY website.

Let's put downhill mountain biking on the map!

Done... Although I do think all top 5 Male and Female riders from the UCI also some of the veterans like old peaty need to be voted up... They all do more than enough to promote the sport. Around my area the DH bug is spreading like the plague with new trail centres shooting up all over the place!!!! It can only get better!
  • + 5
best plague iv ever heard of
  • + 3
Yep too right... Ive had the plague since I was about 10yrs old... Its incurable!!!! but I think ill just about live with it Wink
  • + 15
i hope she gets it , it would be sick for the sport

I was also suggesting Peaty for SPOTY lifetime achievement but I don't know if that can get nominated in the same way. Also in the Times sportswomen of the year I put Tracey Mosely for lifetime and Tahnee Seagrave for young sportswoman.
  • + 9
i have voted, also gave a cheeky vote to manon carpenter for young sportswomen of the year ;-)
  • + 5
That's a damn fine point Mr Evans, How could we forget the youngster? First year on the elite scene and she hit the podium on countless occasions. Definitely deserves a vote.

the dh sceane in the uk is looking so good at the moment, i can only see it getting bigger, even peaty was on ch5 last night on the gadget show, with the electric dh bikes, while i dont think they will ever be used by a purest it shows the sport is getting bigger and that can only mean good things, it makes me proud to be in this sport :-)
  • + 2
voted manon, also team gt atherton for team of the year and peaty for lifetime achievement
  • + 2
I don't think downhill scenes get smaller anywhere because once you pop, you just can't stop!

Was Peaty ever put forward? Should have been, awesome rider, results and a huge personality.

To anybody, any nationality or age, please vote for Rachel, she's done wonders for women's Dh in recent years and if you haven't watched the Atherton project, then I suggest you do because it is a real insight into how special both Rachel and her brothers are. I reckon she should get the support she deserves?
Thanks guys and girls from PB Smile

Just getting her in to the nominations for bbc sports personality would draw a lot of attention to the sport, I'll definitely nominate for all awards mentioned. I remember peaty being on but he wasn't nominated, he got a special mention for becoming world champion, but they showed no footage only a couple of stills of him riding.

 Done. But ...
Sports achievment? Tick
Personality? Questionable

Still, if they dish it out to people like David Beckham and Nigel Mansell it's obviously weighted more towards sports than personality.
  • + 2
right done rach , also added t-mo for lifetime, manon for young and sarah storey for everything else!
  • + 4
 Manon is mint.

Peaty has done alot more for the sport than rachel. Sports personality is alot more than just winning.
As far as I can see rachel doesnt do anything other than the world cup and a few bds races (please correct if im wrong).

while Peaty is a hero in the sport this is not really about Rach (but im sure she would love to win Wink ) - like them or not the Athertons have made it a small side mission to bring the sport to the media and the masses, with national TV and news spots, this does not just happen - you need to make it happen and the Athertons have made big strides to get the sport noticed - a debate on if this is good or not is for another time but the fact remains - they have worked for this and made strides to go beyond the barriers of normal mountain bike support - so you would need to ask if Peaty ever did anything like this or not before we pity him or spite the Athertons

We need ambassadors both in and out of the sports barriers, Peaty, Brendog and many others keep the fires burning and the cheers from within, while the Athertons more business like approach and more "professional" face gives much needed exposure and coverage, both of which fuel the sport and that can only be a good thing

either way they are all waving the flag for us here in the UK - we're pretty shit hot in biking at the moment -- all good

edit - just seen post below - so Peaty was nominated - cool and well deserved

While it may not be racing, she turned up at an uplift at moelfre that was put on by a race team in aid of Macmillan cancer care a week or two ago. She wasn't riding, but her coming down with some signed jerseys to auction off/raffle to raise even more money and talking to young riders and racers alike is what grabs the public's attention. She is a genuinely nice person and I'd love to see her win this!
  • + 1
if thats the case, then great, but my guessing is she doesnt do a great deal of these type of events, which may be down to the size of the sport. I dont think mtb is big enough yet to compete with the athletes etc that scoop this award every year.

yes they are but they were doing it all before the GT deal too - so its been a long time, slow boil and who is to say that the point of swapping to GT was the fact they they wanted the help to do what they are doing - GT are using them yes, thats what they are paying for and to keep the sponsors happy the athertons are doing all this promotion - so to me it looks like GT are capitalising on what they are doing - in other words its a great working relationship and i am sure any sponsor would love to have them for the exposure they bring as a unit

 Done! Definitely deserves it!

Although Peaty must be very proud for the sport and for British cycling you can't help but wonder if he's a bit jealous that Rach is now the most awarded British mountain biker in history..
  • + 19
Doesn't come across as a jealous guy
