Martyn Ashton on Trans World Sport - Video

Trans World Sport is the world's longest running weekly television sports programme, viewed around the world. TWS producer and long-time friend of ours at geebeebee media, Tom Gulson, took the opportunity to tell Martyn Ashton's story, in what's been a life-long dream for him. Tom, who's currently recovering from a heavy mountain biking injury himself, finally finished the feature a few days ago and it's now available for all to see, and will be broadcast internationally on Trans World Sport.

bigquotesMartyn and I have been talking since October last year in terms of getting this feature off the ground. I've been working with Trans World Sport since 2013 and it's a feature that I think reflects everything we stand for as a programme. Even before his accident, it was something I wanted to do and then after it was just a case of getting the timing right. Fast forward a couple of years and I approached Martyn who was really keen on the idea. We wanted to wait until there was an event or occasion we could use as a spring board for the feature and that happened to be Martyn's latest video, Down Not Out.

We agreed on a two day shoot that would entail meeting up with the Mojo guys who have been instrumental in getting Martyn back on a bike around his hometown near Port Talbot and then his current work with GMBN at Play Sports Network, in Bath. I wanted Martyn to tell the story as much as possible because part of Martyn's charm is how engaging he is, and I felt the viewer would warm to him, even if they had no idea who he was. Bear in mind the typical TWS audience is not a cyclist and the show is international - we go out to over 50 countries around the world. The shoot was great fun. I've been lucky enough to travel to many interesting places and film with some fascinating people but this was definitely one of my favourite shoots, it was basically smiles all around for 48 hours. The feature has been really well received, with a lot of people telling me how inspirational Martyn was and if there was one thing I wanted out of the feature it was to convey Martyn's story, which is truly inspirational. - Tom Gulson, Director/Producer, IMG Media

bigquotesTrans World Sport was a huge part of my childhood and early riding career - I used to watch it religiously each week. TWS always featured such amazing athletes and an incredibly diverse range of sports. Once my career took off a bit I didn't have the chance to regularly sit down to watch the show but always looked forward to flights because it would often be an option of viewing on the plane.

To be featured on the show is quite simply unbelievable. I certainly can't imagine how I sit next to some of the international athletes that I've watched on the show. In all honesty, I don't think I do, but hopefully, the story is interesting and viewers enjoy the summary of where I'm at these days. - Martyn Ashton

I'm not gonna lie.. You have made a grown man cry (again). Legend is a term that is used too easily these days but in your case it is truly deserved.

What a legend. Makes me realise how lucky I am. I had a crash that ended up pretty similar to his, landing on my shoulder and my legs folding me in half. I'm still recovering from my broken back but this makes me really think how lucky I am not to be paralysed. To get on with life the way he has shows so much strength.

One of the things that first made me sit up and notice Martyn as a wee kiddy. Suggest some of the younger visitors check this out - still cracks me up today:

A true legend, and someone I'm proud to have met on several occasions
