Giant Factory Off-Road Team Reveals 2018 Bikes

Glory Advanced - Marcelo Gutierrez

The Giant Factory Off-Road Team recently concluded its pre-season training camp in Southern California, where riders spent time dialing in their 2018 race bikes and gear. Following team camp, several riders departed for South America, where they will compete at the March 24-25 opening round of the Enduro World Series in Lo Barnechea, Chile.

With several new equipment sponsors on board this year—including new suspension partner DVO along with Shimano drivetrain and brake components and Maxxis tires—the team bikes have a different look and feel heading into the 2018 season.

Other key sponsors include HT Pedals, MRP chain guides, Stan’s NoTubes sealant and ODI grips.

Here’s a look at some of the new Giant Factory Off-Road Team bikes you’ll see at the races this year.

Marcelo Gutierrez’s Glory Advanced:

The seven-time national downhill champion from Colombia already scored his first victory on his 2018 Glory Advanced when he won the opening round of the IXS Downhill Cup last month in Argentina. This year, Marcelo’s Advanced-grade composite Glory frame gets fitted with a new DVO Jade rear shock that delivers 203mm of plush travel tuned specifically for the Maestro Suspension system. It’s also tuned to Marcelo’s riding style and the specific demands of the track.

The rear suspension is complemented by a new DVO Onyx fork, offering 200mm of suspension up front. Marcelo’s machine also features a Shimano Saint drivetrain and brakes, PRO cockpit components, Maxxis tires (specific model depends on track conditions) and Giant Contact saddle.

Josh Carlson’s Reign Advanced:

The Aussie enduro racer helped develop the latest Reign Advanced, which this year gets all-new DVO suspension including the Jade rear shock and Diamond suspension fork. With its superlight, stiff and strong Advanced-grade composite mainframe, plus new geometry that has been developed and tested on Enduro World Series terrain, it’s everything Josh and his enduro teammates need for massive race days on extreme terrain.

Josh’s bike also includes a Shimano XTR Di2 drivetrain and Saint brakes; PRO cockpit components; a Giant Contact Switch dropper post and Contact saddle; and the Giant NeosTrack computer. Josh also has a full selection of Maxxis tires to choose from depending on track and weather conditions on any given day.

Carl Decker’s Anthem Advanced Pro 29:

After several years in development, this 29er was introduced late last year with all-new geometry and a new 90mm Maestro suspension system bolstered by an Advanced Forged Composite upper rocker arm and the new trunnion mount for the DVO Topaz T3Air rear shock. Both the mainframe and rear swingarm are crafted from lightweight Advanced-grade composite, and the geometry was developed for XC racers like Carl to optimize the bike’s 29-inch wheels.

Carl is running a 100mm DVO Sapphire fork up front. This XC slayer also includes a Shimano XTR Di2 drivetrain and XTR brakes, PRO cockpit components, a Giant Contact saddle and Giant NeosTrack computer. Carl is racing on the Giant XCR 0 29 Composite DBL WheelSystem and Maxxis tires of his choice depending on the
weather and terrain.

Rae Morrison’s Liv Hail Advanced:

Representing the Liv women’s brand, Rae is racing the Enduro World Series and other premier enduro events around the world on her new Liv Hail Advanced. With its Advanced-grade composite frame and all-new DVO suspension setup—including the Topaz2 rear shock and Diamond fork—Rae has 160mm of smooth Maestro suspension to help her tackle the most extreme descents with confidence and control. Rae’s Hail Advanced also features a Shimano XTR Di2 drivetrain and XTR brakes; PRO cockpit components; a Giant Contact Switch dropper post and Contact saddle; and the Giant NeosTrack computer. Like the rest of her enduro teammates, Rae will also race on her choice of Maxxis tires, choosing the model based on track conditions and weather.

  • 2 0
@IamZOSO: good thing you don't need nuts for XC!
  • 2 2
@T1mb0: Not my loss at all! Plenty of other bikes I'd rather be on.. The new YT Capra for one.. Absolutely beautiful.. Yeti 5.5c is another, Rocky mountain instinct, Trek slash 9.9.. With these bikes on the market the giants don't get a look.
  • 4 0
@bohns1: Yep still you're loss. If the new YT Capra has the same frame quality and warranty as before it won't be up to much. I've witnessed far too many Yeti's fail to consider one and Rocky Mountain doesn't have a much better rep.
The Treks are made by Giant and are actually pretty damn good... so if you can't get over your Giant hang up then pay quite a lot more and get the Trek tup
  • 1 1
You're the ones that are doing it wrong
  • 2 0
 @UtahBikeMike: I’m sure you do...
  • 1 0
@T1mb0: No, still not my loss... If I'm paying my hard earned money I'm not going giant that's for damn sure.. That's just on looks alone.. They are fug! I love all these cyber frame failures from all these top manufacturers.. Sure there gas been problems with every manufacturer, including your beloved giant at some time or another! I know a handful of guys on the 5.5 and absolutely love it.. Yeti has since rectified their rear stay issue from the past.. Also Rocky Mountain warranty is top notch.. Still waiting to see on how YT handles any new season warranty issues but the Capra is one of the nicest looking out so far this year, hands down! Sure giant makes Trek but Treks are way nicer in my eyes.. Don't get all butt hurt that some peeps don't like giant! If your on one then rock it.. Who cares!
  • 3 1
@T1mb0: Paying quite alot more means nothing to me dude! As long as I'm getting what I actually want..
  • 2 2
@bohns1: you've missed the point fella. It is your loss because you're refusing to consider/try a bike based purely on aesthetics. You just don't want to admit it or don't realise it.... I know that because I'd written them off for the same reasons until I tried one last year.

I'm not butthurt about it, just trying to help you become a little more open minded. Giant won't notice if you don't but one Wink
  • 2 0
@T1mb0: I've ridden Giants man! They're not horrible but maestro is by no means at the top of my list for suspension platforms.. They're just not something I'd spend my hard earned on.. Like I said, if I'm spending thousands, I'm getting what I truly desire and what stokes me.. If I was sponsored by Giant and they were handing me free bikes, different story!

That's great Giant doesn't care I'm not buying their bikes! Plenty of other people buying em... Good for them!

Funny how they went back to 29ers for XC, after spending all that effort and money on marketing the idea that 27.5 was the one wheel size to rule them all and 29ers deserved to be relegated to the garbage dump of discarded bad ideas. And curious to see how long it'll take them to go 29 again at least for Enduro.
  • 12 1
You would have thought they would have learned from Niner the perils of painting ones self into a corner on wheel size...
Fortunately for them, they didn’t change the company name to Twenty seven fiber.
  • 10 8
It’s why I dropped the brand completely. I used to race the 26er Anthem; then they brought out the 29er, which I bought only for them to drop for the 27.5 almost immediately afterwards. I won’t go back to Giant no matter how good they are or how cost effective. Since moving to other brands I realized that the Maestro was good but not great, and the factory shipped bearings are always cheap crap that need replacing pretty quickly.
  • 1 0
@ReformedRoadie: NotYour26er bikes are simply incredible! The numbers are Intensely insane! (Niner did pave the way.)

@captaingrumpy: I've raced on Anthems for a decade. Two years ago switched to the Spark RC and it is faster and funner. A bit more expensive but worth it. Many of the guys I race with moved to Spark RCs.
  • 3 1
@ReformedRoadie: For me Niners problem is not its idea but rather its stagnant conservative geo.

g-42 way to regurgitate the same shit people have been saying for a few years now lol get a new topic already and quit beating a dead horse. Do your parents still give you shit for pissing the bed when you were 5?
  • 2 0
 @iamamodel: faster how?
  • 1 0
@captaingrumpy: I currently own an Intense Primer which I realize is not a pure bred XC race bike; my riding style has evolved as my priorities have changed (together with my age and the condition of my knees) and when looking for my latest bike I did not find that Giant offered anything truly comparative (ie a great 29er trail bike) even at a vastly more attractive price point. I have recently ridden XC race and trail bikes from Scott, Santa Cruz, Specialized and Yeti (as well as from Giant) and by and large have found them to all have that something extra in terms of build quality, finish and handling compared to the “equivalent” offerings from Giant. In terms of performance (and not wanting to start a religious war about suspension design, geometry and wheel size) I have found that, most other things being equal, the chassis quality is what sets the other brands apart from Giant; they just feel like they are designed more thoughtfully, are stiffer and are meant to last longer. I do understand that regardless of what brand you buy a bike depreciates faster than a TV so the expense must make sense in terms of what you can afford and what your priorities are.
  • 3 4
@mm732: Faster in that I Strava everything and my times are faster on the Scott. As I approach middle age I'd expect that my body is slowing down, yet somehow I am breaking all my PBs set on Giants. My race results have also improved, and gaps between the fastest guys in my age group have narrowed. I've been racing for 25 years and some of my best results across all ages have been in the last year. And the latest Anthems are heavier than their predecessors (and as @stuie321 says, depreciation and quality ain't no good - I've been burnt a lot by Giant!).
  • 1 0
@AlexS1: plus the arrogance of the owner, or former owner, since they filed for bankruptcy, and the number of people of broke them...certainly a small fraction of what they were in my area.
  • 1 0
 @mm732: the colours obviously
  • 4 3
So is it some fanboy or someone from Giant that is neg propping my comments (which are based on decades of racing experience and owning 15 Giants)?
  • 1 0
@iamamodel: it must be. Surprised I have not been neg propped myself; brand loyalty is very emotional.

  • 1 0

  • 2 0
@kcr138: With HSC and LSC dials?
  • 4 0

Why not reduce the standover height a little bit and make it more like this:

www.pinkbike.com/photo/15695424
  • 9 1
I think not-breaking may be the issue Wink
  • 7 0
Why do you need extra standover? Are you getting off the saddle and straddling the top tube a lot?
  • 3 2
@seraph: Because I have big balls bro.
  • 1 0
because then you'll snap the frame about 100mm from the seatpost clamp. That's what's happening to Top Fuels (including mine) which have tons of standover clearance. Literally the top tube is just above my knee when I'm standing next to my XL, I'm 6'1".....
  • 5 0
Super clean looking cable routing. I do occasionally wonder why they don't integrate hydro tubes into the frame. Do a fitting coming out of the frame at the headtube and another somewhere further back with the kind of brake hose you see on a car between front and rear triangles, and then a fitting right at the rear caliper. They could at least do it on the top end models.
  • 1 2
And fill up the frame with brake fluid? What's the point?!
  • 3 0
@niko-bellic: you run a single solid brake line through the inside frame during construction then you do a fitting on either end where it exits the frame: www.summitracing.com/parts/rnb-785-540?seid=srese2&cm_mmc=pla-msn-_-shopping-_-srese2-_-dorman
It would mean hydraulic internal routing with a zero maintenance line. If you managed to break a fitting off somehow you'd be stuck doing external routing, but if they are placed well that isn't likely to be an issue.
  • 2 0
@taletotell: External quick connections for the brake lines would be something neat to see with your idea too.
  • 1 0
@Smallbright: I would like to see them, but it occurs to me you wouldn't disconnect your brakes very often.
  • 1 0
@taletotell: Unless you switch brake systems or damage your external line it would be a quick swap.
  • 2 0
@Smallbright: also it occurs to me that normal car style fittings are pretty much a one time use item. When you take them apart they never seal well again. A bolt on banjo like you use to fasten the line to the caliper would be needed.
I really would like this. It would look good, but the extra labor would surely be a pricing issue, but it's not like the level of labor that goes into a phone so how much more is it likely to cost?
  • 2 0
@taletotell: It probably would cost much higher. As for the fittings on a car, I am thinking more along the lines of hydraulic systems that are found on small farm equipment. The systems have line connections like those on an air compressor.
  • 2 0
@Smallbright: proof of concept to patent to seed capital (gofundme/kickstarter?) to manufacture a single run to sell to a big company to retire to your choice of bike mecca.

If you can find someone with experience in manufacturing to set you up with contacts I'd say this is a go.
Of course you will need a frame manufacturer who is big enough to get this into the publics hands. . .

  • 4 0
@Deuce-DeuceAndAHalf: is the hail the same as the reign? It looks a lot better! Even the frame shape.. or is that a trance?
  • 2 0
@jaame: Not that the paintjob on the Reign is bad, afterall who wouldn't want a bike that reminds them of a lightsaber! But the Hail looks better IMO, even with that colour scheme. I think they're in the same travel bracket, but they're not the same bike, and the Trance is different again.
  • 3 0
I like Giant because they are one of the few bicycle companies that manufacture carbon and every other alloy in-house to spec. I know Trek and Norco and some others out source componentry or specality frames. Go Giant!
  • 1 0
Why is the rear link so different between the Trance and Reign? The Hail has a similar linkage piece in comparison to the Trance and it was created to add stiffness and upgrade the ride but both the Glory and Reign have what appears to be old links. Can anyone help explain this to me?
  • 1 0
It has the features as the hail and trance links (Carbon one piece link). they just added cutouts to make it look a bit nicer and not such a mass in the middle of the frame.
  • 2 0
Love the new look of the bikes...wish the team the best of luck this year.
The only thing that confuses me is why are they using the old Contact Switch Seatposts? Surely the newer one's were an option.

  • 6 0
We are working on making different colored stanchion tubes and definitely green ones are preferable, but have to get the process down so they will last a couple of seasons. We will keep you posted!
  • 2 0

whats up with the shimano brake levers on the glory. they aren't the normal saint ones which say saint on them. they look more like xtr ones or could be new saints.
  • 3 0
I’d be surprised if they are not just xtr trail levers stuck on ( Shamino fail to acknowlgde they have any saint lever design problems). But a lot of riders in Oz, are ditching the levers. I have a full saint set, and they appear to have some major design flaws ( pump up, bore taper issues, air capturing in lines and in the claiper.) Im currently about to try some xtr race levers, as running the xtr trail version was still no good. If this dont work, im done with Shimano.
  • 2 1
@Sparkless: XTR ones have/had issues too. Shimano is losing their mojo quick.

@Sparkless: I think the pump up feeling is at the caliper. The ceramic pistons seem to have more pull back then regular pistons so the pad gap with the rotor is big. So when the lever is moved quickly the piston ends up closer to the rotor and then the feel changes.

I recently bought a Reign due to it being such a cheap deal new! Not the best of looking bikes but my god does it ride well! Really surprised me!
  • 3 1
Those are very sexy bikes. Personally I don’t like the look of the reign frame. Top and down tube just looks off somehow.
  • 4 1
piggy back on an XC bike what ever next. any news on that topaz2 shock
  • 1 1
 and a pretty burly fork!
  • 3 1
And no dropper... Probably because the goons went 27.2mm.
  • 1 0
That's weird cause they are working on an Inline topaz
  • 2 0
@Whipperman: We have the new Opal in-line air shock coming soon.
  • 1 0
@DVOSuspension: Keep up the good work!
  • 1 0
 @DVOSuspension: why so tight-lipped on the Topaz2?
  • 3 0
What da hell, wheres McKay Vezina’s bike?
  • 1 0
He was too busy riding his bike and we couldn’t catch him for the photo shoot!
  • 2 0
These liveries are pretty understated for race bikes, especially the Anthem. Surprising and attractive.
  • 3 0
 Sniffle Sniffle ....(tear drops)....
Is Emerald dead..??
  • 2 0
I hope not. My Emerald is the best fork I have ever had.
  • 2 0
Yeah, why not have a WC race team on the Emerald? I thought it was cutting edge, superior performance, etc.
  • 5 0
The Emerald isn’t dead! We will be updating the Emerald with a new cartridge and damping system and dropping nearly a pound off the weight. The Emerald is our personal favorite and will never die!
  • 1 0
@DVOSuspension: That's good to hear. Will the original versions be upgradable?
  • 4 1
DVO suspension and Shimano drivetrain = WINNER!
  • 2 0
Why no Onyx SC on the Reign/Hail?
  • 2 0
The Onyx SC on the Reign and Hail will be coming soon.
  • 1 0
looks great but i missing some Green on components, stickers for me this combo is boring
  • 3 0
 Dat Reign is sexy...
  • 1 0
I must have been snoozing. Is Adam Craig off of Giant? Or just doesn't have a factory bike because he's done with EWS?
  • 2 0
Retired last year, but he's still an ambassador
  • 1 0
An emerald with blue anodized upper tubes would have been mint on one of the dh bikes
  • 2 1
Wish DVO would offer shocks and forks with black knobs and such instead of that green
  • 6 0
We will be in the near future.
  • 2 0
Has the Glory frame changed at all in the last 10 years?
  • 1 0
Geometry has definitely changed. Besides that if it ain't broke don't go f! Ing with it.
  • 1 0
 2015 it was changed
  • 1 0
@BeerGuzlinFool: One of the 2 bikes to win both World Champs and Rampage
  • 1 0
@BeerGuzlinFool: Not saying it needs a change, just surprising that the biggest bike company in the world can get away with re-using the same design this long in an industry notorious for making changes for the sake of change.
  • 1 0
@bvd453: ya, i can see that side. but sometimes changing all the time is annoying to the buyer. I want a bike that seems "new" for more than 2 years. Brands like GT, Norco, Specialized, make such huge changes to their bikes, your one year old bike can look ancient in a season. Im attracted to companies that have a good platform and keep it simple....giant, trek, santa cruz.
  • 2 0
Best tooling Glory I’ve ever seen!
  • 1 1
What's with the SRAM lable on chainstay? As far as I see it has shimano drivetrain, brakes, dvo suspension,.. So, why SRAM is labled?
  • 2 0
 It's not.. look again
  • 1 0
 @BeerGuzlinFool: looked again but still..
  • 1 0
@ka81: no.. look again.. it says giant.. it is just blurred in a couple of the photos
  • 2 0
Is it just me, or did DVO make that Glory significantly cooler?
  • 1 0
Anyone else agree that the Living has the best paint scheme?! The others all come pretty damn close though.
  • 2 0
So weird seeing DVO in anything but green!
  • 1 0
Really excited for DVO with Giant taking them on as OEM suspension ... well done guys
  • 1 0
Hopefully the original Emerald damper will still be an option in the future...?
  • 2 0
 So Nice!!!!
  • 1 0
Reveals? Should have announced it! Pfft
  • 1 2
Man that reign does not look go to me at all . something to do with the area above the shock / below top tube doesnt square with me . glory looks awesome .
  • 3 1
 Puuurty
  • 1 0
 Beautiful/competitive fleet!
  • 1 0
I wish they ran the Emerald fork instead...looks way sicker!
  • 1 0
Are the Glory or Reign 29ers?
Just curious
  • 1 0
Do I see a climb switch on jade trunnion coil:p
  • 1 0
A piggyback shock on an XC bike... that’s questionable.
  • 2 1
The Team has their choice between using the new air in-line shock and the Topaz with the piggy back.
  • 1 0
@DVOSuspension: Maybe they wanted the sensitivity of a bladder?
  • 3 1
 The hail is rad
  • 1 0
New Giants - meh... Blue DVOs - Fuck yes!
  • 1 0

  • 1 0
pretty sure Josh and Rae are gonna want more seat post drop than that
  • 1 0
That Liv looks like a set of 2000s era skis. Awful colours and graphics.
  • 1 0
Which came first, the glory or the session
  • 1 0
