Video: Reece Wallace Exploding Berms on a 29er in Portugal

Jun 1, 2019 at 22:57
by Giant Bicycles

Reece Wallace traveled to the beautiful northeast Portuguese countryside to ride Chiba Bike Farm aboard his new Trance Advanced Pro 29 0. Chiba is a small private bike park with a shuttle system built and run by the small and dedicated Chiba crew. The park is nestled amongst seemingly endless rolling hills, villages, and ancient Roman castles from the 12th century. Certainly not a place one would expect a bike park, but this is what makes it so unique. The sense of old and new meeting is overwhelming, and amazing.

bigquotesNever thought I'd say this about a 29er, but it's my favourite bike. The Trance 29's 130/115mm travel is a lot more capable than the numbers suggest. It floats over bumps without feeling sluggish like a longer travel bike—the big wheels eat the terrain, and the short travel keeps it rolling. Essentially, less effort to go just as fast, which I love. - Reece

bigquotesLove the comments from the peanut gallery. Anyone who digs and rides know it's fun to slap corners, and also knows they're pretty chill to fix Wink Shouts to Chiba Bike Farm & Wharncliffe Trailworks for building and encouraging me to rip some of the best berms in the world - Reece

Impossible to tell in the photograph, but there was a 100km/h headwind while pedaling up for one last run. Made for a fast descent!

29ers are so bad at cornering

Fixing ruts = awesome real rider, great trails and riding and that Trance is perfect for those trails.

@tomgibson compared to 26, they're trash. But A for effort by Reece. Dude's a berm killer.

@chriskneeland: aren't you guys all dead yet??

@bohns1: Nah, there's still quite a few real mtb'ers out here.
  • 3 1
Do you want to sell 29ers?
Because that's how you sell 29ers
  • 4 3
@chriskneeland: u mean ones that are trying to hang on for the sake of hanging on.
  • 6 6
@bohns1: No I mean the ones who can ride mountain bikes without needing bitch wheels. If the trails are too rough for you, maybe you just need a road bike.
  • 4 2
@chriskneeland: wow ...u truly are a retard! So Reece Wallace, kendall weed , kerr, Atwill and Lopes are all bitches then I guess?
  • 6 5
@chriskneeland: let's just call a spade a spade... With the the exception of the DJ guys, the people hanging on to 26ers are those who can't afford new bikes and hide that by saying "26 ain't dead"... there , I said it... It's the truth... Bikes have moved on and when you can afford to, you should too
  • 5 4
@Spark24: Bhaha...can't afford to. I just dropped $8500 on a new Insurgent build. My 26" Kona Operator just got a new wheelset, ti spring, and about to get a full refresh of Deity spec. You only spend money on the dork wheels if you suck at riding real bikes.
  • 3 0
@Spark24: What is that story about people who assume. I just got a YZ450F with 80/100-21 Dunlop MX33 front and 120/80-19 Dunlop MX33 back. Have any opinionated comments about my setup?
  • 4 5
@bohns1: If you're sponsored by a bike company looking to bolster sales to the 29er market, then you get a soft pass. Now if you BUY a 29er, THEN you're a bitch.
  • 4 3
@chriskneeland: and u are clearly clueless...Sponsored riders can ride what they please ..Many choose the wagon wheels . Why would i regress to children's sized wheels? Get a better job and get a real bike bud!
  • 3 2
@chriskneeland: Haha let me guess, u suck at climbing, cardio is week and ride lift access park only .
  • 3 0
@bohns1: Do you have any appointments this week, I have a tooth ache.
  • 1 2
@jorgeposada: auto corrected my weak...But No, I have zirrrrooo appointments this week ...You should really get that looked at der bud!
  • 5 4
@bohns1: I think it's funny you call 26 children's wheels. All the best riders in the world choose 26 inch modded bikes even when their sponsors don't make them anymore. I guess the FEST guys are hitting children's sized jumps on their children's sized wheels right? But then bike companies put out these video ads with their latest 29er awkwardly rolling down a trail more suited for slopestyle bikes and everyone buys right into it. Keep drinking the kool-aid.
  • 3 1
@chriskneeland: Gladly...I've had 26 ..many of them last one being a blue ltc...I'm 6'3 and 29 works perfectly for myself and many others. Haha love how u say awkwardly rolling down the hill..watch a kirt voreis edit and tell me how that's awkward...Same with this Reece Wallace vid...Please tell me where the awkwardness is on these edits...Fest is a small part of the mtb world and still they ain't all on children's wheels.. just stay playin with ur kitty toy in the park bud.
  • 3 4
@bohns1: Frames grew to make room for the bigger wheels. Bike fit has nothing to do with wheel size. You probably have a frame that fits now, just with a shitty wheel size. The feeling of a 3 inch larger diameter wheel is just awful. I feel bad for people on 29ers.
  • 2 1
@chriskneeland: man unjust be trollin...U cant be that dumb...I was on an xl blur ltc and I was like a circus bear on top the bike..The feeling is awful for YOU and that is subjective..Keep feeling sorry for us ..I'll keep ripping my sb130 and loving it...Have fun on the chairlift bud.
  • 3 6
@bohns1: Imagine how good that thing would feel with smaller wheels. Like an over size slope bike just ripping everything it came into contact with. Damn shame what 29's did to bikes.
  • 1 3
@chriskneeland: It would ruin it completley plus it would look pretty lame..climbing would blow ..It would be a kitty bike all over again..Damn shame that near all disciplines in the sport have gone 29 I guess eh? I guess the entire industry is drinking the koolaid ...lol

@bohns1: making mountain biking easier for the masses makes more money. Nut like I said, there's still a few real riders out here.
  • 2 1
@chriskneeland: ... And what size wheels went on your lovely Insurgent?
  • 2 1
@chriskneeland: Haha ya thats what it is..It has nothing to do with progression at all.. You're a funny guy...Keep telling yourself whatever u need to in order to keep clinging to the past and justify hanging on. At least you'll get cheap used parts so I guess that's a win.
  • 2 1
@bohns1: “Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.”- Mark Twain
  • 1 0
You guys have not even argued about the 29×27 setup yet, starting to think your really low rated dentists.
  • 1 1
@jorgeposada: If you're not racing, you'd really have to be a turd to run that set up.
  • 1 4
@Spark24: The bigger the wheels, the worse the ride. I know from experience. And that's saying a lot because the Insurgent is one of the most playful 27.5 bikes you'll ever find.
  • 1 1
 @Spark24: lol....That's good !I like that quote.
  • 1 2
@chriskneeland: I was more referring to this infantile argument and the turds involved. I can make any size wheel go over your house, no problems here.
  • 1 3
@jorgeposada: It's only an infantile argument to those with infantile brains. I wouldn't care about all the roadies that need 29ers to get out in the woods if they didn't get rid of 26 in the process. It's selling out real mountain biking to placate a bunch of pansies.
  • 2 1
@chriskneeland: now that was a first class infantile comment right der! So is the advent of 29 in dh and enduro roady riding? Are all the pros that made the switch pansies?Dont give me the sponsorship bs either! ...These guys can ride whatever the fark they like !
  • 2 4
@bohns1: It's all mental. Look at Gwin two years ago and Brosnan and Bruni last year. Look at Hill and Maes. They've already proven 29 isn't faster. A few bad results was enough to spook several riders to try 29, many with worse results. With others there's a clear sponsor push to get their fastest riders on a 29 model. It's a joke.
  • 1 3
@bohns1: Remember, whether 29 or 27.5 is faster is debatable. But there's no question that the bigger wheelsize rides like trash.
  • 1 2
@chriskneeland: Not buying it..I've ridden them all..That is just your subjective opinion..I ride up and down...climbing ability is unsurpassed..Let's watch the season unfold in enduro and dh and see who's riding what ...If ur strictly on the chairlifts then i can see why the children's wheels may suit you...Hell , u should just go 24 inch..
  • 20 0
Stop riding so ENDURO on that 115mm XC bike. We might think that short travel bikes are fun.
  • 33 2
Yea, for real. Some underpaid dude @ Giant HQ who handles warranty claims is hitting his head against a wall right now and shouting.
  • 6 0
Not had one of them back for warranty yet. And the only issue i’ve had with mine is a sticky dropper
  • 5 2
@timbud: I know it isn't the same, but i very much enjoyed the "No issues except this issue" defense.

He must have put 26inch wheels on for this edit .

Looks like Reece bought the sheep dinner afterwards. Good man.

But seriously: Great shredding in a very cool place. Makes me want to go back to Portugal and check it out.

  • 12 0
 My Portuguese is very strong.

The commentary was real but the translator needs to be fired! What the guy was saying was way more entertaining and passing on the stoke better!
  • 7 1
Best looking guy in MTB History.... And fixes his own berms. #keeper

Damn it. Makes me miss my Giant Glory. My only complaint it’s that the reach it’s too long for me since I’m pretty short. But after watching my videos riding Glory, how I realize that bike is so stable and fast. Kinda regretting my decision to sell it.
  • 2 0
Love my Trance 29er!!! The bike is a blast to ride!!! Only issue I had with the bike was the wheelset, cheap hubs. Built a new wheelset with some Chris King hubs. Issue solved!!

Plenty more of this around, people. Come ride with us sometime! Just to be clear, that photo with the ocean view isn't anywhere the Chiba Bike Farm, which is located near the border with Spain.
  • 1 0
The lower photos were taken in the Sintra Hills. The one with the ocean is him climbing up the "Donkey" trail.
  • 1 0
Same trails as that 50-01 edit about a week ago. So stylish in both cases I’m buzzin to ride
  • 1 0
 ahahah! Muito Bom!! (very nice!)
The portuguese part and reece riding just made me watch 2x!@@

Your Giant is not as strange as Levy's Giant. Giant fight.
  • 2 0
 Wicked ripping Reece!!
  • 1 0
Reece, Ethen Roberts and Dusty will make great combos for Giant’s video
  • 1 4
Rad riding! Giant is a little off the back when it comes to bike geo, design, etc. They need to do some serious revamping of their models. There was a time when Glorys and Reigns were by far the most popular bikes around.
  • 2 0
This new Trance 29er is not off the back at all. You should certainly give one a proper demo.
  • 2 0
@OzarkBike: I was referring to the rest of the line up. This particular bike looks solid!
