Southeastern Gravity Series 2015

That would be...Massanutten Resort, Bryce Bike Park, Beech Mountain Resort and Snowshoe Bike Park and the fun starts this weekend, April 25-26, in Virginia at Massanutten for the combined GES/SEGS YEE-HA Downhill Race.

looks like a pretty weak track - don't know that area at all, is there nothing better out there for a DH race?
  • 5 2
I kept waitn for the dh section... lots of rocks to make some rock gardens, must be some deadfall to use for berms, jumps etc.
Oh well, at least there's $ on offer for riding a bike downhill!
  • 6 2
Yeah I was wondering if I should make the 4 hour drive there but if that's the track, not worth it. I couldn't find anything to justify a DH bike. Maybe it's really steep and I can't tell??
  • 5 0
The Massanutten Dh track is definitely rougher than the video gives it credit for. Helmet cam + leaves on the trail doesn't do the rockiness justice. Definitely more old school with very few berms/jumps though.
  • 1 1
Does it require a DH bike or can an longer travel trail bike survive?
  • 4 3
I can tell you 100% this doesn't require a dh bike, helmet cam footage or not...
  • 2 2
@nvranka Thank you for your input!
  • 2 1
Course lacks large features. Its all turns and constant root and rock chop. Certainly its ridable on a long travel trail bike. Its not a scary course in any way. for most, Dh bike will be faster. Its a fun course and easily worth the weekend of practice and racing for a 4 hr drive particularly for us in the South that have far fewer DH race options....
  • 4 0
Believe it or not, it was once a WC track in the late 90s. @BikeStopCulpeper is correct, the video really doesn't do it justice.
  • 3 0
I'll be driving 10 hours, not 4. Will be my second time going down to "the nut". You could survive just fine on a longer travel trail bike, but the DH bike will soak up the constant chatter more comfortably. It's not the gnarliest DH track on the east coast that is for sure, but it's an excuse to break out the big bikes and hang out with friends after a long winters nap.
  • 3 1
The course is rideable on a HardTail. But good luck, it's actually a brutal course on a DH bike.
  • 2 0
A much better view of the track....

The first race at "The Nut" is a simple course and was once a back in the day WC Course, its worth doing for that matter alone, so that one racer can see how far along the courses and with the bikes we ride have come along. Smile Snowshoe will give you all you want for a race and Beech is short and you got to be on your best game there.
  • 2 0
@OneSlowBusa Thanks for the vid! That makes the track look better. I love old school trails. Guess if I come I'll bring both bikes, just in case Smile
  • 7 3
Very excited about the series. However, same issue the Southeast has had the last 15+ years....Nobody knows what is going on till last minute and can't plan. We see this published the Monday before the first race. SMH. Either way, glad the SE is getting some good organized racing.

For what it's worth, the following blogpost was published on Feb 2nd and on the front page of Pinkbike on March 17th. It has this series and all those along the East Coast listed. www.pinkbike.com/u/gojammedia/blog/2015-se-regional-dh-schedule.html

The folks pulling this together made their website live last Wednesday and it took a couple of days to mix in the SEGS blogpost with my normal job…… so I agree with you to a point, but on the same token the dates have been out there for a while. We try stay on top on the happenings in the region, but that can be only as good as the organizers, venues and races publishing the info.

If you want, follow us here and on Facebook, as we try to do our best to stay in tune with dates. Thanks.

Hell Yea!!! Awesome!!! Glad to see a series finally come about down here!!!
  • 3 0
@gojammedia Thanks for the link I totally missed that.
  • 3 0
Can't wait for Beech! It's got a gnarly rock garden and I'm only a couple hours away.
  • 1 0
Thanks for the heads up gojam. I will keep an eye on it.
  • 6 2
Really hope this pushes Beech to up their game, expand their trails and possibly even work towards a slopestyle event. That being said, their DH course is no joke, the absolute antithesis of Sea Otter.
  • 5 1
This is going to be my first race here in the USA, exicited about the race, but the course could be better.
  • 5 0
steal there lift and take it to Windrock.
  • 1 0
Only if we somehow make Southern Rocks part of the race course.
  • 1 0
Where is TTC on this too?
  • 1 0
Am I missing something? The points chart says there will be points for qualifying runs. There is no quali runs on the Massanutten schedule. Is that just going to be something for the championship at Snowshoe or a typo?
  • 2 0
they are using world cup point system. looks like a simple cut and paste error to include that extra Qualifying points component. No, there will not be any qualifying runs at the SE Series
  • 3 0
Here's an idea........... Yankees vs. Rebels DH Series...... 2016.............. I'll be there
  • 4 0
Geared up and ready to go!
  • 1 0
Am I reading correctly that I have to pay 90 if I register on Friday. I didn't think registering before the race is late
  • 7 7
Very suprised this is a USA Cycling Series, good luck to all. Stoked for the South !
  • 7 6
Looks like ESC was a day late and a dollar short, didn't need the ESC series after all down here, Smile . Maybe the series should be rename NORTHERN eastern state cup, Smile
  • 10 2
@russselll That's a dick comment man, especially since @Eastern-States-Cup is clearly being supportive. There's room for more than one series to exist. Let's not get caught up with the name of the series and just be stoked that there's some solid racing in both the northern parts and southern parts of the east coast.
  • 3 2
To be fair, Eastern States Cup's comment was a little backhanded in my opinion. "Very surprised this is a USA Cycling Series" belittles the series. russselll seemed to point out the obvious that ESC is a little butt hurt over the fact it is not part of their series, loss of some of the market for them. I enjoyed the ESC, I've raced that series and it was well organized. Things just didn't really come together for them but as someone who resides in the Mid-Atlantic this is good news as the Gravity East has a good series planned as well, hopefully they will fix up the GES reputation again when it comes to having their stuff together. Geographically, everyone should be stoked because just race the series that's closest and enjoy.
  • 4 2
I have to agree with @Rastis1. The SE series has four stops, (1 that was a World Cup, 1 that was a national championship venue twice, 1 that is a NORBA Legend / Pro GRT Stop, and 1 newbie in Bryce that is comparable to Seven Springs in the NE. This series opens up quality races and competition to racers in the south who cant drive the 12+ hours to the New England area. It's a shame the ESC didn't jump on this market sooner because what they are doing is impressive. However, their comment does come off pretty cynical whether they meant it or not.
  • 1 1
@PhilKmetz Ah man, sorry you feel that way towards my comment, guess you are still hurt of that the great Pumpkin Festival is not happen this year in your area and you need a BIG HUG! Smile Invite you to come down for some South Eastern hospitality take part in the watermelon festival, pickle festival, apple festival, beer city festival and some real southern BBQ festival. I understand that you are a very spoiled having some many lift accessed lift resort bike parks up in your greater New England states area to choose from.
Glad to see there is plenty of racing going on in all the areas on the East Coast, all four venues have something to offer to every level for the racers, good write up from SnowshoeRider4Life about the venues.
I have raced in the ges and esc race events in past, both were worth the long weekends and many hours of driving.
And, the esc has tried to bring the series Down South for the past two years, but doesn't seem to get it, how it works Down South. The resorts do a good job putting races series themselves "in house", with understand that bringing in a "new" outside series structure, is more work and sharing "the money" of the event.

 what happen to plattekill mnt?
  • 2 0
er... SE refers to South East United States.... its actually a pretty big country... Plattekille is still rocking up in New York...
  • 1 0
Well, if you really want to get technical this is more of a Mid-atlantic series and not really Southeast. @marvelous Plattekill is under another series, ESC.
  • 1 0
To be fair, thats considered intermediate to advanced trail in my area.
  • 2 1
Stop with the common sense! We're trying to be dicks here!!
  • 1 0
luca shaw won it on a big bike.
  • 2 4
Haha... it says SOUTH eastern. Not even close...
  • 2 2
Here, this might help you better understand the Geographic regions of the US.
www.google.com/search?q=southeast+region+of+usa&espv=2&biw=1366&bih=667&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=DE42VbHxBsSqsAW74IDoCg&ved=0CCAQsAQ

You see, I did a google search for maps of the "South Eastern" Region of the US. Notice that state over there to the right called Virginia, that is where Massanutten is located. You see, many of these maps include Virginia in the "south eastern" region of the United states, as well as the other locations in the South Eastern DH Series, which would explain, why they call it, the South Eastern DH series.

I mean, I guess all the ski resorts that are in the "true" Southern states are probably upset they weren't invited right? I know I was speaking to the ski resort manager for that spot in Florida that said they were going to start offering Lift Served DH racing, and just like the guys in Georgia and Alabama, they couldn't come through with the financial hardships they encountered this winter with the light snowfall and lack of revenue, so they bowed out.
  • 4 2
To be fair, no one refers to VA, WV as the "southeast" around here. "Mid-atlantic" is the term that's used.
  • 2 3
To be fair, I really don't care. I just felt like being a wanker
  • 1 3
Awesome, you know how to use Google. Can you look up "how to not be a d!#k"?
  • 3 2
Actually, I know how to use Google, AND read a map. I tried to look up "how to not be a d!#k" and all I got was "requested action not found". Sorry.
  • 1 0
I think Richmond, VA was the Capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War, the southern states. So, yes then, Virgina is a southern state. WV is a kissing cousin with the southern states, while WV is right below the Mason Dixon line, which makes it a Southern State and the US Census Bureau also recognizes VA and WV as a southern states.
  • 2 0
And the Deep South, where, somehow, my parents kept me as I grew taller... is FL, GA, AL, MS, LA. and DH riding there is....tricky... (alleliua TTC and Windrock in TN !!! )
