SRAM's New Unreleased Drivetrain Leaked on Craigslist

In a world of spy-shots and social media fudges, it often feels like most things have been done - intentionally or not. Well, if you think you've seen it all then think again.

In a quickly taken down advert on Craigslist, an unknown vendor in San Francisco was selling what looked to be the yet-to-be-released SRAM direct mount derailleur and redesigned shifter. It's described in the advert's blurb as "Top of the line in the SRAM line... High performance and lightweight... Also very atheistically [sic] pleasing..."

As the branding on the items would suggest, the advert confirms the units are of the XX1 tier.

photo
The prototype that's been seen during the 2022 season...

photo
And the mech that was posted on Craigslist.

What that translates to is a mech that looks very much like the one we've seen in SRAM's Blackbox prototype program. The direct mount interface, which will replace the hanger entirely, should provide a stiffer structure that could translate to better shifting.

photo
The new shifter is vastly different from the current model and offers lots more adjustment.

The big takeaway from this though could well be the refreshed shifter. Ergonomically, this seems to be now unbridled by the expectation that an electronic shifter should in some way be constrained by the design cues of a standard cable-operated shifter. This shifter is very different. It's simply two buttons on a rounded unit. We can now also confirm from the pictures that will mate nicely with the current SRAM Matchmaker system while also giving plenty of adjustment options for riders looking to fine-turn the fit.

@iiman: Does this really happen? Genuine question, I'm not saying it doesn't. Just I've said some fairly brutal stuff in the past, and the most concerning thing that ever happened was once one of the Pinkbike staff DM'd me to congratulate me, haha.

@iiman: You definitely deserved it. Wink

@gabriel-mission9: 100%. Funny enough I genuinely downvoted the guy cause he was talking shit lol

Here we are January 10 and we’re seeing posts about Craigslist ads.. who won the win it Wednesday that ended November of last year or any of the advent winners that were supposed to be announced 3 days ago? Cool shifter though it would go pretty good on my 2005 Schwinn stingray/chopper. Don’t you worry I got some pegs for you to stand on sweetie
  • 45 3
Also, I don't think they ever announced the video of the year winner? Organization and follow through are lacking as of late...

  • 16 0
@RonSauce: The /real/ winners were Outside+ all along

I would have voted for a cycling press editor currently under an NDA but that is pressed by his boss to write articles during the slow news period. It easy to remove the test part from the bike, take crappy pictures and create a short lived fake craiglist ad pretending it is someone else, then create an article about it like it was some sort of discovery.
  • 1 0
@n1ck: thought SRAM had the patent from completely wireless?

I once purchased a brand new Black Box fork on ebay. Didn't know it was Black Box until I sent it into RockShox for service. They got back to me and were like......... Where did you get this from ? It had prototype internals that were not meant for release. They sent it back to me, but I'm assuming they took the secret bits out.
  • 23 4
I certainly hope not. In no way can a company steal from an individual without approval. Even if they did take those parts out they should've sent them back to you.
  • 17 2
@PHeller: sure, in principal, but he didn't even know what internals were in the fork to begin with, so he'd have no way to know whether they swapped something out.
  • 30 0
Also possible that they were prototype and inferior, replacing them could have been an upgrade.
  • 8 3
@JSTootell: good point, just because something is prototype/blackbox doesn't necessarily mean it's better than stuff that makes it to production. And if it's stuff that's tuned for their pros/racers there's a good chance it could be poorly suited to the needs of an average joe
  • 24 0
I had a similar experience when I bought a float x2 on PB. When I was trying to get the right mounting hardware I sent them the 4 letter code and they were like "That's for team riders only where did you get that?"
I'm like, some guy in Canada on Pinkbike and that's all I would say... lol
  • 22 3
@ksilvey10: good on you for not throwing the seller under the bus
  • 9 1
@thegoodflow: Seth did a video on this problem a few weeks back. Basically industry bids get sent so many parts and bikes to test, and there’s no legal way to get rid of them. The manufacturers don’t want them back, but they’re not the persons property to sell either. Lots of them end up on the grey market.
  • 2 3
@BarneyStinson: I'm no expert on property law, but if someone lends me something and then says they don't want it back, I'll consider it my property and will have no qualms about selling it... sue me
  • 1 0
@thegoodflow: apparently that’s what happens, normally through a third party.
  • 1 0
@thegoodflow: I wasn't gonna do that. I was stoked when I found out although I highly doubt it was a significantly different tune than off the shelf. It wasn't life-changing.

 @ksilvey10: wasn't gonna do what?

@ohbmxer: Scotts Valley/SC area has lots of bike industry too... and a lot of pros do riding and product testing there lets not assume the worst of people
  • 6 0
@dylananderson: It sent up red flags to me. Pros know what this is. The description sounds like someone stole it and looked up the current gen price/specs. Lots of pros in the area with test equipment just makes it more plausible that some of those test products got stolen.
  • 5 0
I heard that it allows to preselect gears and senses chain tension (so it changes gear when you actually start pedaling) and it's supposed to be a game changer. I heard about it in September, quite amazing that it did not leak before.
  • 1 3
Not only is it wireless, it's also an automatic drivetrain. Pretty cool

I'm pretty excited about the shifter ergonomics now that we have a look. I find them a bit lacking on the current version with either rocker paddle attached. I don't think the team doing the contact points for the drop bar group was the same one doing the mtb shifter.
  • 2 0
Agreed. AD-Biking's aftermarket Upshift paddles are a game changer on the current gen, and I'm glad that SRAM is trying something meaningfully different with v2.

Is that direct to frame mount a huge red flag to anyone else? Can't wait to see all the cracked chainstay posts it'll bring.
  • 3 2
I don't that'll be much of an issue. All of the forces should be transferred to the thru-axle, not the frame
  • 3 0
I wonder the same thing, however the axle runs through the mount, so potentially that’ll help add some strength to the system. If you hit it hard enough, is the b-knuckle replaceable or do you have to scrap a $800 derailleur?
  • 1 3
not in the slightest, im no engineer but I bet my 3200g frame is a lot stronger than a 400g derailleur that mounts to it using about 4mm of material...
  • 1 0
@BikesBoatsNJeeps: From the drawings I've seen of those derailleurs, I do believe it is replaceable. Time will tell what, if any, downsides there are to this setup.
  • 2 2
So the groupset is so undesireable that someone who had a brand-new early-access to it, decided to trade it for some welding work. And the welder, who is a rider, decided to hock it on Craigslist for pennies on the dollar, citing they would rather ride Shimano. Hmmmm...
  • 5 1
 prefers shimano based
  • 1 0
Wonder if they will have a cable pull model with the same mount or if it's going to be AXS only. Certainly looks more compact and out of the way than current Eagle design.

  • 1 0
It'll fall into the hands of the chinese and they'll make knock off parts easily that will be sold on e-Bay.

Why would you want 13 speed? Are you stupid?
  • 1 2
 I want 14 speed. @thegoodflow:
  • 3 5
"The big takeaway from this though could well be the refreshed shifter"

Not sure anybody gives a toss about Sram's shifters?

The real takeaway is that they designed a universal derailleur hanger in what looked like a rare genuinely smart, wholesome move in MTB product development - and are now superseding it themselves within a couple of years. WTF?
  • 11 0
This mounts directly where the udh goes. It’s a clever way to have frame makers build frames around the design so you can create this product. It also helps a ton with proprietary hangers and is a net positive whether they created these derailleurs or not
  • 4 3
@Solorider13: OK so if it's the same fitment as the UDH I will untwist my knickers on the subject Big Grin
  • 4 0
@Solorider13: 100%. Universal derailleur are nothing but a positive to consumers, its honestly baffling why there wasn't a standard for so long. Who cares if SRAM benefits as well from it as long as its a positive for us as well
  • 2 0
I bet this is a marketing scheme
  • 2 1

i love braking my $600 unit rather than a $20 hanger...

Between the overload clutch, being further inboard, and the fact the derailluer is rumors to be modular, this really isn't going to be as big of an issue as you think...but it's pinkbike, bitch away about change.

I love braking with brakes. Given that brake / break are top-10, most used MTB verbs, how is it possible for PB errorists stay confused year after year after year?

“Detachable connection interfaces of the family members to adjacent sub-assemblies of the module within the sub-assembly are configured uniformly across family members for the respective sub-assembly in such a way that a family member of the sub-assembly family module is exchangeable for another family member of the same sub-assembly family that, is for example, of different material, of different design, of different functionality, of has different surface properties, while retaining the remaining sub-assemblies of the module.”
This is straight from the Sram patent. It sounds to me that Sram will sell parts of the derailleur so you don't have to buy a new one, you will just have to replace the broken/damaged part/parts.

@cookiemonster615: Cool, instead of buying a $25 hanger, now you can buy a $100 sub-assembly.

@barp: don't get me wrong, I won't ever be buying any $600 electric derailleurs, but der hangers protect frames, not derailleurs... If you hit your derailleur hard enough to bend the hanger your derailleur will likely be toast anyway.
  • 5 1
@thegoodflow: In my professional experience, bent hangers are way more common than bent derailleurs.

@barp: I was gonna argue with you and then I realized I'll only be running Shimano 11 speed for years to come, I don't have to fix other people's bikes for money anymore, none of this matters, and I just don't care. Cheers!

@barp: Yes. You do have a point and I believe this derailleur is a solution to two non-problems. 1: It's supposed to improve shift performance which wasn't a problem for AXS. 2: It's also supposed to "save the planet". It won't because the vast majority of riders will stick with hanger-mounted derailleurs unless they break one or buy a new bike. Also, you'll be throwing away more metal with the new derailleurs than with the old ones because you'll be replacing two or more parts instead of one. I will not be wasting my money for possibly marginal gains, just to be clear.

@bmied31: I wonder if the screws will corrode/seize or the heads will round like lock on grips? I can't picture them coming out easy

Whatever. This screams guerilla marketing to me.

So we're finally getting bike brands on board with the Sram UDH and now we're going to direct mount?
  • 3 1
This direct mount attaches to UDH compatible frames. Whole reason sram did the UDH in the first place, so the interface for this direct mount would already be in existence on the market.

Rincon lot legends saw it this morning groms..and no you can't join.

 Buy now….delivery in 1-2 years

 Amazing!!
  • 2 4
How is that going to mount on any current bike? Also... some SRAM employee just worked their last day.
  • 2 0
Will work on any bike that is specced with Sram UDH, mounts in place of the hanger.

 @JarrodB: OOO Gotchya
