Hyped on the evolution of bike videos that has really occurred over the past year or so. More and more directors are telling stories that stretch beyond just the visuals and that is awesome to see. You killed it on this one Harry.
I'm a bit confused. What story were we being told here? To me this felt about as visuals focused as you can get...which I'm not saying is a bad thing by the way.
@RedBurn: all big bike movies are sponsored but we still pay. I'm always amazed at the free content we get and the amount of underrated incredible talent that is on Pinkbike.
elephant in the room: so can I expect a rehash of whatever rupert puts out semi annually now?
Don't get me wrong, I've always loved the Anomaly score (film was kind of a let down), Ryan Taubert is hugely talented, Salomon Ligthelm and Dan Difelice were a foray into filmmaking for a lot of us. I'm a huge fan of the craft, if I had my own world people wouldn't go work 9-5's they'd make films and tell stories. With that said it just feels slightly cheapened to make a video like this after Lapse, distorted voice over and everything. Not that Rupert Walker has exclusive rights to that kind of stuff, I just happen to be a big fan of Brett and I'd rather not see him living in Brandons shadow in every way shape or form. From a backflip can can to this, he's put a lot into getting to where he is and he deserves content that sets him apart. Just kinda pains me to see that.
Same here!!! Cool video, crazy story thing but too much like Brandon Semenuk!!!! I'm a huge Brett Rheeder fan too and Brett should be set apart from Brandon!!!!!! Too much like Lapse!!!!!! Somebody should have thought before putting that story thing with the video!!!! I hugely dislike it actually!!!!!!!!!
@NBijelic: it makes me sad too!!! I don't know who's idea it was to set up that story thing with that video and it seemed to me that the video was set and put into the same coloring as Lapse!!!!! :'( I watch this Brett Rheeder video one time. I started watching it again the second time and it's just too much like Lapse!
A few of Brett Rheeder's videos I've heard him say, "l want to be apart from Brandon - l feel like Brandon is one step ahead of me"......... sorry Brett something's gone wrong in this video!!! :'('''''
Yeah, and there were lately a few videos with this kind of voice in the beginning. Seems like Rockys video with the Slayer was first and everybody tries to copy it now
Im really into conceptual edits like this. I find far more articulation and depth out of them, in comparison to "yesterdays" 'why can't we just make bike films about biking' fisheye-point-and-shoot-static-angles (which don't take me out of context: that style of editing does have its genre, with riders and fans. It can still have its place).
I absolutely love the standard of here and now (as far as camera technology/techniques go). I always look forward to seeing how DOP's actively seek to progress into new territory...and holy sh*t!...it can't be easy; the benchmark of cinematography nowadays is so so high.
Maybe the bandwagon of 'haters' could treat this like a music festival: You're not into this style of music? Thats perfectly fine. But please try to refrain for throwing your pint of smelly piss at the main act! Im more than sure the band don't appreciate it, and to be honest, a majority of the crowd don't really like piss either.
The music was inspirational, the extra vocals were like my science teacher explaining the existence of the sun, and the video was so sick. Could it get any better?
You know we've gotten spoiled by these guys when you can watch something that sick and think "but he didn't really do anything new..." Still better in every way than I can ride in my dreams.
Great riding, but I would personally rather see more actual biking and less drawn out intros ..
just my thought ... still always sweet to see Rheeder hit jumps
Great bike video...visual poetry! But I'm lost on the title, "Shadow of the Sun", really? As if the sun casts shadows instead of the objects blocking the light? haha, I get caught up in the minutia at times.... time to watch again
That is definitely Kelowna. The WC Bennett bridge was clearly shot in the background. I'm guessing that dirt jump track is in some kid-of-a-vineyard-owner's yard.
@shift9ears: Yeah, shame. those jumps are minty and the dirt jump park on Hollywood rd. is a bit of a dump... it's sad that we don't really have a good place to jump bikes in Kelowna.
@chomers: well, there are great jumps, they are all either on private land, not that great and need serious attention, or soon to be bulldozed with the amount of growth Kelowna has seen/ landowners that get tired of seeing people demolish their land (R.I.P dreamland). So most people just downhill or enduro from what I've seen... Not saying that I'm not fortunate to live in such an awesome place, its just hard to find dirtjumps that's all.
Brett Rheeder is like Kobe Bryant of mountain biking! Amazing skills and style but you always have the feeling that he is copying SOMEBODY...? (No clue who could that be.)
would have been cool to see a real Brett Rheeder edit again, but I guess Harrison is too much into copying Rupert to give us anything to get stoked on... not saying it wasn't a professional and well done narrative, but he tried to make it have too much like the mystic ways of Ruperts style, and totally forgot that he was also supposed to be filming a mountain bike edit. Mountain bike edit. pinkBIKE. mountain BIKE. Not pinkFILM, not pinkCINEMATOGRAPHYBULLSHIT, bikes.
I actually like this a lot more than Lapse. The footage here makes sense and the voiceover is relevant. Lapse seemed like some well filmed b-roll and some words thrown together with a few sick tricks. I think Brett stands out well in this! Nonetheless both are sick!
"A few sick tricks". Really man, I think you are being unfair here. Every trick in Lapse is mind-blowing, some of them are so complicated I have a hard time even naming them.
Brett's vid is rad, and he his obviously a billion times better than I'll ever be, but lapse was really on another level in my opinion.
Please don't charge us

As you say, i really like them both, but this is sooo much like-lapse that it makes me sad .

Brett Rheeder / Harrison Mendel : Time to hop on that bandwagon!
In all seriousness though, the vid was super sick, just seemed like a huge ripoff of "lapse" the whole time.

Just cruise on over to another stage.
Oh, I do pray I don't have to hear those words in "real life" ... ever...
Can you do better trolls?
