Intense Announce New CEO and CFO

Jan 15, 2014 at 10:49
by Intense Cycles
Intense Cycles founder Jeff Steber and partner Marv Strand, announce yesterday that Andrew Herrick is joining the company as its Chief Executive Officer.

Herrick had spent the prior 11 years in an executive leadership position at crankbrothers, having sold the business 5 years prior and staying on as CEO until handing over the reins last summer. At that time, he stated that he wanted to find the next great opportunity in the complete bike industry.

"This is another piece of our plan to transform Intense" said Jeff Steber, company founder and partner in Intense, "We had hoped we would find someone with Andrew's experience and passion for smaller companies. Andrew comes with a proven track history to grow companies both domestically and internationally with his marketing and sales knowledge."

Herrick added, "When Jeff approached me, I had been looking at some other opportunities but Jeff, Marv and their team convinced me that they were ready and committed to doing something very special with Intense. With the heritage of this great brand and incredible product, I was convinced that this was my next opportunity."

"However", Herrick went on to say, "I knew I couldn't do it without a strong Chief Financial Officer to guide the company on the envisioned growth path, and the company's recent addition of Eelco Neirmeijer as CFO made the choice easier for me."

Steber and Strand had recently welcomed Eelco Niermeijer as the company's CFO. Eelco had come from a larger company environment where he held several financial positions at a public industrial group..

"I have spent some time looking at the Intense business and the bicycle market and I am thrilled to be joining the team, Niermeijer said. "This company just finished a year in which revenues grew more than 40% and this type of success is giving Intense the freedom to execute an exciting strategy and invest in its future. Andrew's ability to join the company is a direct result of our recent growth, and the strategic opportunities available to us. We will immediately begin building our finished goods inventory to make sure dealers and distributors can get bikes at very short notice from Intense and we will have a historic high level of inventory of our new bike which will be released in a couple of months from now. These are major initiatives for me personally in my role at Intense."

The company expects to make several more announcements related to additional engineering and sales talent in the next weeks. Intense will excite the industry and riders with a major product launch that will be announced in detail on March 17.

Crankbrothers has a long history of making bike components that last forever and never have problems.... what could go wrong?

Note to Pinkbike: I love these industry insider articles. They make little or no difference to my daily riding pleasure, but it's cool to see how some of the cogs turn to make this sport/industry role! What are other peoples thought?

i kinda like them too, but the problem is they are usually a bunch of PR bullshit without context. that leaves the PBers to attempt to fill in the details, some of whom might know, most of whom don't know. either way, it's cool to see and hear who is doing what to whom and for how much...

Oh my G*D. The CEO of Crank Bros, a company with one of the worst quality reputations in the bike industry now leading Intense - a company with one of the worst quality reputations in the bike industry. The blind leading the blind or dumb and dumber?
  • 14 7
Tell me, What's wrong with the Quality of my M9? Do you have one? I do and I have absolutely no issues at all. Please enlighten me !!!
  • 7 7
Found 6 cracks in the swing arm before i stopped counting on the last one i seen Smile
  • 11 2
I also have had no issues on the last 3 intense bikes I've had.

I have a 3 year old Uzzi that I ride the wheels off of. When it finally dies I will replace it with another. I have seen broken frames from big and small company's. We should talk about Ibis and there swingarms.
  • 6 3
im still huckin my 2003 M1, and I love it!!!
  • 4 1
I Ride a 2011 SS2 love it, spent three summers at Whistler ripping trails from June through Oct, other than one broken derailer hanger ($20 fix, 20 mins later back on the intense) no problems, This is a sweet ride, that is a functioning piece of art work, love it so much I went out and bought a Tracer 2, also a dream machine and visual master piece.
  • 4 1
I've been ripping a 6.6 for 3 years and 9 months now, does 60km/ week on average, all year and all trail only, it's never skipped a beat.
My Crank Brothers Joplin set post too
  • 1 0
Crank Bro did NOT invent the Joplin. It was ok in the time it was released by Maverick but only ok. Then CB bought it from them. So I would not blame CB for this product. But for the pedal bearings...
  • 4 1
You say that have seen, not that you own the bike that's cracked. All of my Intense bikes have been faultless. I will definitely continue to buy them.
  • 2 0
Intensevp, it was an eight month old M9 belonging to a 30plus bike mechanic. RLEnglish the uzzi is a kick arse wee park bike, built like a brick shithouse! solid as
  • 2 1
pictures of these cracks or it didnt happen. i have owned a few intense bikes and never had a single issue. i still love my 2011 951. the only issue i ever had was with the swing arm and they addressed that very very quickly and sent me an upgrade free of charge in a few weeks time
  • 1 0
They make though bikes, some batches were faulty. Most are problemfree. My daughters 951 rides like a dream. Will always be in the market for alu Intense with that special purposeful look.
  • 1 0
If an M9 cracked in 8 months Intense would replace it under warranty surely
  • 1 1
to be honest i don't think it matters what brand you buy in a DH bike they all crack somewhere within a year or two, of course there are the odd exceptions. mzorich the bike is long gone and the owner sent photos to intense for the warranty, and yes of course it was replaced as should any reputable brands ( i had 4 yeti rdh frames in a year under warranty)
  • 1 0
i have had my 951 for 3 seasons no and i have no cracks. a good solid aluminum dh bike should last if it is engineered/ welded correctly. thats why i have always been a fan of intense. even when they had a few issues with the 951 they build solid frames and stand behind there work
  • 2 0
It was not just the 951. The tracer also had issues. Anyway, it seems they are back to quality. Let's see what the future holds...
  • 6 1
High levels of inventory not necessarily a bad thing . For most of.there existence intense has been a small to medium size company. And getting product replaced under warranty was sometimes difficult or impossible cause they would be sold out of the model for.the year so you would have to wait along time for a frame replacement or change bikes. I think intense has been one.of.those brands that everyone has to own one at least once . A world cup team on a new carbon bike would be sweet. With Chris and Claire even better
  • 5 0
..... so whats happening Jeff Steber and partner Marv Strand, are they stepping aside, will they be moving into more creative roles...!! Missing a big part of the story, is there another message about the direction of the founders??
  • 2 0
 good call...........

I wanna be the CIO - Chief Intense Officer.

Seriously though, are you looking for buyers? Smile

Unfortunately with the way we choose to spend our money these days companies can no longer keep production in north America and keep the end price affordable. Also production costs in north America are huge compared to the east. I love.buying stuff that's made here cause it keeps people employed and the economy moving . But the truth is for most companies it's move over seas or close down completely. Over seas production has gotten much better due to the fact that most companies have western representatives on location to oversee the manufacturing .and the wages and working conditions have improved for them so they are happier at there jobs. I'd rather have a bike made overseas then no bike at all
  • 7 1
M9 carbon would be nice !
  • 4 2
Interesting article. I wonder why intense thinks that having the highest inventory level ever is a good thing? If inventory is overproduction and a form of waste then why is this thought of as a good thing? Just curious. Can anyone at intense comment?
  • 5 0
Seems to stray away from the "lean manufacturing" mindset everyone is pursuing now
  • 2 0
It seems to me that they are boosting inventory to ensure they have bikes in stock therefore eliminating lead time issues... Maybe they have been working with a new distributor as well?

The last paragraph seems to insinuate that lead times/availability was an issue before for intense.
  • 4 1
 Pricepoint
  • 10 2
if people like your bikes, sales increase. if sales increase, you have to carry more inventory to fulfill the demand. i dont see the confusion here.
  • 2 0
maybe so they can crack other markets better like Australia, South Africa, Europe?
  • 2 1
@ cuban-b: if sales increase when you increasd your production and your inventory keeps increasing that means your increased the production too much. Whatever. I'm curious what Intense will announce on march. An Enduro-specific bike? Just kidding. Though putting no bullshit press fit BB in the Carbine + ISCG tabs would be neat. Too late, bought an SC Nomad C :/
  • 2 0
That's what swayed me to the nomad too Smile loved my traser 2.
  • 1 0
Intense has been doing very well in the last few years. Increase in production is in response to more demand - not the other way around. Some companies might pre-emptively produce more goods based on the speculation that something will sell a lot (enduro, WC DH, or cheaper bikes) but beyond that I'm quite sure these guys know how to control their supply chain cost. So you're all guessing correctly. I would say the announcement of either: Their intention for exit strategy (sell to larger co), new WC team, new enduro bike, or more price points. Or some combination of those. They have a bright future.

That being said, I ride Santa Cruz (Nickel) and Giant (Glory DH). Also one of my good friends used to work at Intense and he now rides Yeti. Doesn't say much, but it might be a marker of things to come in terms of high-end taste in the enthusiast market, which bigger companies do cater to, but not as much as to the mass market.
  • 1 0
So how much of the overbloated pricetag on a new bike is covering the costs and risks associated with high inventory? How much inventory is based on speculation that turns into deep discount at the end of the season? How much does bad speculation lead to higher prices the next year? Personally I would prefer made to order at a fair price. I dont think anyone wants to pay in any way for inventory waste. My original question was in earnest. Maybe Intense has figured out something different here. Any intense folks out there?

  • 6 1
 you're setting it up wrong.......

have 2 intense bikes and being made in the usa was a buying factor, also looking to get a 951. will be my last intense if they move to china.
  • 4 2
I love my Taiwanese giant glory!
  • 3 4
"Take it over seas and I'll never buy it again", Tell that to Sam Hill when he was riding and winning World Cups and World Champs on his Specialized made in Taiwan !!! But then again you probably know more about riding and bikes than Sam.
  • 3 0
Where does Sam Hill come into this? All else being equal, many people will buy American made products. I probably wouldn't buy a Specialized for a handful of reasons and whether or not he won races on a Demo is completely irrelevant . Does the fact that a hyper is good enough for Zink make you want a hyper?
  • 3 0
Sam Hill. paid lots of money. pros would ride bikes made in Chechnya by one legged radioactive dwarves if cool brand with Enduro frame and lots more $ and free travel to Nepal etc
