Press Release: Intense Cycles

Intense proudly announces the 2019 Intense Factory Racing (IFR) Program. The new roster includes returning IFR team member, Jack Moir (AUS), American National Champion, Neko Mulally (USA) and multi-time World Cup medalist, Aaron Gwin (USA).

“As a brand, we’ve spent the last year doing a lot of soul-searching. It became clear that what made Intense great in the beginning was our commitment to racing. Our biggest benefit was derived from having top riders competing in the most challenging conditions as a part of our R&D process” says Intense founder and CEO, Jeff Steber. “We made a promise to ourselves and to our company, that we would reclaim our spot at the top of the World Cup circuit. As soon as we did that, choosing the roster was easy.”

It’s not always as simple as choosing a roster, though. With so many teams and only a handful of riders capable of bringing home top results on any given weekend, it’s a seller’s market on the World Cup these days, and top riders have their pick of solid programs to choose from.

For Aaron Gwin, though it wasn’t a hard decision. “I’m stoked to begin this new chapter of my career with Intense Bicycles and my fellow teammates Jack and Neko. I’ve been buddies with the owner Jeff for a while and having the opportunity to work together now is super cool. We share a lot of similar passions and our love for racing and riding-developing fast bikes has been a big part of both of our lives. As a rider and team owner, I’m excited to run such a legendary race program. We’ve put together an awesome group of people and I’m looking forward to the years ahead.”

Neko Mulally was another top pick for Intense. Gwin and Mulally were teammates in past years and bring a solid working relationship to the team. “As an American racer, I’m excited to race for an American brand with such a strong heritage in downhill racing,” commented Mulally.

Jack Moir

Jack Moir is an IFR veteran, and 2019 will be his fourth year with the program. At 24, Jack is the team’s youngest rider, and rose to stardom under the IFR flag when he played a pivotal role in developing the M29. In 2017, Jack spent the entire season on a different prototype at nearly every race.

“Prototyping in public isn’t for everyone” says Steber. “Anything can happen with prototype bikes. Jack’s ability to ride the bike for its strengths and really embrace the development process during the World Cup Series showed his true professionalism.”

The team will be managed by long-time trainer of Aaron Gwin, Todd Schumlick and Cathy Zinck. The duo has a long history of working with athletes and running successful race programs at both the privateer and factory racing levels. The IFR Technical Team will include John Hall for Aaron Gwin, Daniel Paine for Jack Moir and Sam Yates for Neko Mulally. Brock Van Heel has been hired as the team videographer.

“As Aaron’s trainer the past 6 years, we’ve had a chance to develop a strong relationship,” stated Schumlick. “We agree that for a race team and its riders to perform at their best, there needs to be confidence in everyone involved. For this reason, I was thrilled to come on board as Team Manager and take on this new challenge. I’m very excited to start the season. I believe the Intense M29 is an exceptional bike and I am eager to get the ball rolling for the 2019 season and help our team reach new levels and milestones for the Intense brand."

@jamesdunford: they are f*cking fast bikes. I have had 2 generations of 951s that my weapon for the race season. The bike carries speed yet nimble and playful. Its different style of riding.

DH racing frames, with those characteristics you mentioned. It's what they are, and what they're supposed to be like.

This was quite probably the worst kept secret out there.

I think the Athertons will take good care of it

@lord-01: Athertons will be on new canondale dh bikes!

i approach it differently - i ride the bike i fall in love with, not the one my favourite rider represents - and i just love the yt philosophy too much - that's something i want to stand behind and support - can't wait to get my bumblebee !

@Luis-Sc: I've been riding YT through both epochs: BG and AG - kinda glad to go back to lowkey FR crew but wish Angel and Vali all the best. It would awesome if YT had a woman on top of the podium in the next few years. IMO that would be cooler that the Gwinner.

@endlessblockades: yeah - i know what you mean - i was never much of a mtb-superstar follower - maybe because i do a ton of other sports and even though i've been mtb'ing like crazy lately, i can see myself using the tues for a couple years and after that move on - that said, still love yt saying shit like "let's make an affordable bike" - i just love that attitude soo much !

Jack : YEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAA !!!!!!!
  • 84 2
Am I the only one who noticed the "...as a rider and team owner..." part of things? I really don't know anything about Gwin's past contracts and any perks or investments or anything. Has Gwin had part ownership of things in the past as well?
  • 70 1
Don't know, too busy scraping mob decals off my Tues to find out right now.

Seriously though, I noticed that. I don't know, maybe he's setting himself up for retirement in the future, or trying it out as something he might want to do when he retires?
  • 7 2
Does that mean he pay's himself his own salary?
  • 5 5
Yes YT Mob he created it and brought all the pieces together
  • 36 3
Gwin seems to be a very savvy businessman as well as a great rider. The guy’s no slouch. This is truly a world class team. IFR may end up taking DH into F-1 territory.
  • 8 0
Maybe he forwent some of his salary for % stake in the company. In the previous announcement they showed several investors. So my guess he either ponied some up some of his own cash, or negotiated stake in the company
  • 3 1
@sprecks57: more likely that he negotiated the job security of All of his people. The 1.5 million number thrown around makes sense if you include Neko hall and his trainers
  • 15 2
I think Gwin technically owns his own "team" for WC racing, Intense is basically the frame sponsor (though obviously it's a close relationship, they don't just ship him frames and call it a day), then he has individual kit/component sponsors as well that he chose. I think it was the same way with YT mob, I've seen some video with him where he states this. I could be wrong don't think it means he owns some part of Intense now.
  • 1 0
@LaXcarp: Makes since if he will retire with them. Develop bike, win races, sale bikes, retire, PROFIT>
  • 2 2
@fattyheadshok: brah, they're called managers and agents. Gwin isn't negotiating this contact.
  • 2 0
Killer team, I bet Todd Schumlick as trainer will have a big impact on all the riders too.
  • 3 0
I think what it means is that Gwin is basically the Lebron James of mountain biking. He's so good and in demand that teams have to offer him part ownership.
  • 3 1
Gwin finally has his long chainstays that hes always wanted, and now he needs custom links to shorten up the rear-center!

Hey it took us 2 years to develop the Kenda Hellkat and since we got this tire in our hand we stuck with it in the majority of conditions. We even got world cup wins and world champ podiums on the Hellkat no blacked out, so we doubt their sharpie budget will be a big expense next year, good luck to them for 2019 !

Interesting to see that a company that almost went bust 2 years ago, was forced to go customer direct to survive and left its dealers with bikes on the shop floor worth half the money they bought them for, now seem to have enough money to compete at this level with these riders.

It wasn't a great secret but still nice to hear none the less. This feels like a good fit for Gwin. The bikes look great and I'm hoping Moir can continue to crush it whilst in this pressure cooker. Moir is one of my favorites to watch and on the surface it feels like he is a bermuda shorts guy invited to khaki party- hope his laid back style doesn't feel frustrated in what i assume will be a more focused program. That's not a dig at the last Intense team- Moir, Harrison and Lucas were my favorite squad on the circuit to watch- always rode well, had fun and presented as good dudes to those around them.
  • 4 1
I've found the Hellkats to be great tires, in their DH and enduro forms. Pretty annoying to hear people's superstitious negative comments about them because they tried some other Kenda 13 years ago and didn't like it.

Carcasses and rubbers change over the years. Look how fast non-tire MTB products have evolved. Does your opinion of an ancient suspension bike matter at this point? Other than possibly rolling resistance I'd like to see if whiners could find a characteristic of the Hellkat that they didn't prefer over other popular options.

Comments about low grip high wear....never had experiences like that with the Hellkat. Oh wait, maybe I have this info because I acutally used them in the real world?
  • 1 0
Finally someone sensible. Riding the Hellkat myself and have nothing but good things to say, it's a great tire. Low grip? Quite the opposite. But I guess it's easier to talk sh*t on forums than actually going out and trying one.

  • 10 6
Jack and Gwin may go 1-2 alot this year.
  • 9 3
Thats my gut feeling too. Jack has the natural talent. With him learning Gwins line choice and "line vision" I can see Moir being a serious threat this year. I think he will help to push Gwin as well. If the team chemistry works out this could be the most dangerous team in 2019. It depends on Gwins Alpha personality as well. Can Gwin handle having a teammate that could take the overall title from him? Thats my only concern.
  • 4 1
 @Boardlife69:
Alpha personality doesn't get you anywhere under these circumstances. It's not like there aren't a bunch of other guys hungry for the top spot and capable of claiming it. So you do not battle them or your teammates, you just go as fast as you can anyways. I'm pretty sure all of those guys know that.
You don't win because of others loosing, but because you take the win through effort.
Also as a team owner it's probably easier because you win regardless in some way, even though you're not the one on the podium.
I think they'll work out pretty damn well as a team.

@Boardlife69: I hope Moirs ladism rubs off on Gwin and not visa-versa. Also if Gwins behind the scenes crew get to pushing with the cultural appropriation of ancient middle eastern superstitions then that might be abit awkward. But hey, BS aside should be a great year for Intense. They've also got Kovarik riding and coaching for Intense too.
  • 3 0
@Loki87: I guess "personality" is the wrong word as Gwin does not seem like an Alphahole. But he is super competitive and we all know that its hard to be the team captain and be outdone by someone "lower" than you. I'm sure he would be stoked about Jack wining a race here and there but I'm not so sure about what happens if the two are fighting for the overall. But I dont know either of these fine lads so I am most likely wrong. Not judging either of them, just speaking from personal experience.
  • 2 0
 @Boardlife69:
In my experience these guys know not to make their success dependant on others but focus on what they themselves can influence and accomplish. It's kinda a necessary chatacter trait for a top athlete and while Gwin isn't the bro'est of dudes out there, imho he's not egocentric either. Just focused. I imagine being beaten by a younger teammate would only enhance that focus and they might actually be able to feed off each other quite a bit.
We won't know until it happens though, but it's fun to speculate until the season is finally back.
  • 5 0
Also, they might not. The talent pool in WC is quite bottomless
  • 2 0
@Boardlife69: he's the alpha type for sure. One of the quotes from his audio interview over on vitalmtb was something like sometimes you have to "man up and hang on" when talking about his suspension setup.
  • 1 0
@Boardlife69: About the team chemistry - I think/hope they'll be fine. Unlike other sports where the best player plays and the runner(s) up sit on the bench, they will all race every race. If they're racing well, they'll stoke each other up. If they struggle, they'll get hungrier. I'm not sure if getting beat by a teammate is any worse than getting beat by a non-team competitor. Maybe it would be tough to have to always be in the pits with, and always be stoked for a team mate who beats you regularly. It seems like they know each other well.
  • 1 0
@toadlywilde: It's only worse in that if someone gets cut at the end of the season, it's going to be the one in last place.
  • 2 0
Aaron Gwin: As a rider and team owner, I’m excited to run such a legendary race program.
.
Gwin is team owner? Or co-owner? Interesting news.
  • 1 0
Its worth remembering that he is 31 now so will be considering what happens next (3 to 5 years out maybe).
Retirement at some point might seem great as he is so well off, but he doesnt come across as the type.
  • 1 0
@betsie: Sure, it's rational strategy, BUT becoming a World Cup team owner, or co-owner, does take much more than making a decision to do it. Foremost it's the money that it takes. It's no secret that even in motorsport pilots MUST bring some cash into the team finances.

Thank you intense for putting such a bad ass team together !
  • 5 2
 Intense A-Team Australia and American
  • 3 0
 Yeaaaah!
  • 2 1
Hmm, just as we figured, I guess the wait wasn't so gwintense after all... but you can bet this season will be! Lovin this team.
  • 3 1
So - the YT Mob videos and whatnot - wasn't it Gwin's project ? Or team ? How is that gonna work now !?
  • 2 0
What going to happen with Martin?
  • 1 0
@femto505: i bet he will keep his place in the yt mob

 need Dakotah and Luca Wink
  • 1 0
YEEEEEAAAA! I love Jacks attitude and riding, combining it with Gwin + Neko = my favourite team in circus atm, shred it booiissssss!
  • 2 3
shrewd fella, gwinn is. i think he has a good relationship with ktm (remember his daydreaming vid of riding a ktm390 www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZ0qpQ4YupY). the new management of intense has ktm management and i won't be surprised to learn if gwinn brokered the ktm / intense relationship. of course it is only "easy" because he has won so much and done so much for the sport.
  • 2 0
Hmm, interesting they all have different kits on. (AS/fox/adidas(?)) Thought jack would still be TLD

Ah well. No biggie
  • 3 0
Jack Moir is still with Troy Lee Designs and TLD Australia! The TLD BIKE x ADIDAS kits launch in about a month, what was available before was the MX kit. We will launch a trail kit (shorts and short sleeve, as well as that DH kit Jack had on, Mitch had on in a recent video and Brendog had on for Rampage)....There will also be some Adidas A2 helmets! so, unreleased, sneak peeks! haha
  • 3 0
That's a bold move Cotton. Let's see if it pays off....
  • 2 0
Our Maribor WC visit just got more exciting!
  • 1 0
Thank the heavens above!!!!! Nothing in my eyes says DH then a red Intense!! We are back on the map!!!
  • 2 1
These boys are too cool to hang around in the camper rig, from now on you'll find them in tents.
  • 2 0
Best of luck gentlemen. This will be fun
  • 1 1
(Fake surprised look) and here I thought he was going to Haibike with all those rumors of Gwin being spotted on an ebike. Probably the best kept secret ever.
  • 8 11
Yes he was spotting himself from his helmetcam on an Ebike on his own instagram. Intense makes one. My fellow friends... let's JUDGE!
  • 2 2
@WAKIdesigns: If this is true, he deserves to be tazered.
  • 2 5
@BenPea: the front triangle of this bike has the Watt bottle mount! It says Pacific Gas&Electric and Arch Coal on it!
  • 1 0
Woosh... And woosh to me too, cos I googled Watt bottle mount and found this
goo.gl/images/hXg8Hc
I'm praying the holes are spaced correctly to fit my bike.
  • 1 0
People just dont get sarcasim these days.

  • 2 0
Gwin Owning the team is an interesting turn out.

That's a damn fast team, Intense not taking any prisoners in 2019
  • 2 0
Drivetrain details... Who's rear derailleur is that?
  • 1 0
Finally public! But only 29" option for Gwin? Is he absolutely in it?

What a off season Big Grin
  • 2 0
Looks like my recluse has gone up in price!! Shit just got real! Smile
  • 3 0
 Smile Aaron!
  • 1 1
Aaron Atherton... rumours of Gee's resurgence have him worried, so he'll try to beat him in every way possible... even seriousness... wait, that battle's already lost. Razz
  • 2 1
Has Aaron revealed as to why he did not renew with YT? They seem a perfect match tbh.
  • 2 0
Waiting almost a full season for a 29er TUES would be my guess.
  • 1 0
@yzedf: Nope, he was hardly losing on the 27.5 version, in fact he was still the man to beat until injury... Someone just pushed their luck too hard and had it bite him in the rear.
  • 2 3
Love Intense, the history of the brand, current bikes are amazing( i ride one), but they are going to have to sell a whoke lot of carbines and tracers to afford this DH team, it doesnt seem sustainable to me.
  • 6 0
That's why they don't own the team Wink
  • 2 0
@yzedf: Yeah, it sounds like Gwin might be able to fund the whole thing through his product development deals with his sponsors.
  • 1 0
@jayacheess: seems like that would make it pretty close
  • 2 2
I wonder if they’ll catch the same shit the syndicate did from the UCI about non matching kits? (Also where can I get adidas dh pants from?!)
  • 1 1
I hope this means more trail bikes in the lineup for intense. Maybe a new Primer along the same vein as what they did with the sniper...
  • 4 1
 AMERICA, FUCK YEA
  • 2 0
Well we all knew, but it just seems right, Team Intense Git SUM !!!!
  • 1 0
Killer roster! Can’t wait to see how Gwin performs on a bike that doesn’t have some form of an FSR linkage
  • 2 1
Powerful team it will be. It’s always a better bike when it’s new experience ... that make me laugh.
  • 4 6
INTENSELEY boring, get to the start gate, anything before means zip, a broken finger will put him out for a couple of races, again, or was it that he didn't give a fu*k towards the end of 2018 knowing where he was going, the investors will have a lot to say seeing as straber, or whatever his name is, has diluted his shareholding.
  • 1 0
If Intense was hanging on by a thread, then these salaries just snipped that thread.
  • 1 0
What does this mean for the awesome yt mob team videos, intense better step up!
  • 1 0
Pretty sure they will "Brock Van Heel has been hired as the team videographer." Glad they did because any past videos from this team have been weaksauce compared to other teams.
  • 1 0
Going to take your downvotes again... but once more... a team with no women on it. Not even a junior.
  • 1 0
"Geeeez, did not see that one coming !.........." - Nobody.
  • 3 1
 yawn
  • 1 0
Finally the news are out what everyone already knew...
  • 1 0
nice!!strong team for 2019!! good luck intense!!
  • 1 1
Because of Gwin signings, the company would sell the bikes with an Intense price.
  • 1 0
Moir and Gwin on the same team is going to be INTENSE!
  • 1 0
Where can I get those number plates?
  • 2 0

  • 1 0

  • 1 0
Now we see why Enve went to Commencal/Vallnord.
  • 1 1
When Gwin says he is a team owner, which team does he own?
"As a rider and team owner"
  • 1 1
We all knew this was going to be Gwintense!

Says who?!

Said Jack! Right Jack?!

Jack Moir: “Yeahhhhhhhhhhnnn”
  • 1 0

yr welcome!
  • 2 1
 Aaron doesn't look so stoked.
  • 4 0
He never does but trust me, he is. Dude is a walking flat line.
  • 1 1
I remember when when the price was justified for an Intense...Now they are just overpriced garbage made over seas...
  • 2 0
Just like all the other bikes that get their frames from overseas factories
  • 1 1
@RCederholm: Intense used to hand build there frames in house at there Elsinore shop then there Temecula Shop. Then they sold off all then got rid of there fabricators. They are nothing more then a sell out company that now gets there frames for a fraction of the cost, the quality is no where near what it used to be, and they sell them for more.
  • 3 1
@DaveATthreat: Right, I know that. Just pointing out most of the other bikes companies in the same price range also use the same production process they currently do. With your logic, those bikes are also overpriced garbage as well and the branding you are applying is not exclusive to Intense.
  • 1 1
@RCederholm: If you had read my two post you would clearly see that I am talking about Intense exclusively. Not all are garbage. Some are better quality then others..All are over priced which is fine if the quality is actually goo. Intense quality control needs work for the money. They are NOT what they used to be that's all Im saying. Got it?
  • 1 0
 @RCederholm: Thats what I thought.....
  • 1 0
Congrats, great team! Martin Whiteley won't be involved in this project?
  • 1 0
The year of Aaron Gwin on a 29er .

  • 2 1
 LOL
  • 1 0
 hahah I knew it!
  • 1 3
Isn't the guy on the far left looking the most relaxed, Gwin's Pro-Mechanic? No mention of him in the article but would have assumed he was part of the package deal.
  • 5 0
@landscapeben: Yeah, that's Gwin's mechanic John Hall. Great guy.
  • 3 0
Read the article again! Clearly states the technical team will include John Hall for Gwin!
  • 2 0
@Willyb911: Oopa, missed it! Glad they're sticking together, seems like a great team built on a solid friendship.
  • 1 0
Did anyone mention thats John Hall? The bearded dude from the YT Mob videos, always making lame jokes, working non stop, yeah he's a cool guy.
  • 1 0
 Jack Moir! Yeaaaaa!
  • 1 1
 Couple of intense riders!
  • 1 0

 Did not see that coming
  • 2 4
Yawn.... Is anyone else getting tired of how drawn out all this seems to be. We've known this news for ages so why hold off announcing it for so long?

Surprising. Recent rumors were that negotiations broke down over Gwin's insistence that the team be rebranded as "The God Squad."
  • 1 3
The color contrast in the first pic is pretty intense
