I was like, why not just ride down the stairs? Ohhhhh its BMX ahahaha

A lot of riders actually skipped the start section as a whole, and pedaled round the berm. Doesn't show it well in the article but it is basically a ski jump into a jump into a 270 berm. The thing is (im not sure if its the same on a full sus bike) its hard to speed check on a ply run in. Because of this dudes like drew babanaskin had a lot of close to whipeouts from flat landers making them f*ck up the rest of the run. Anyway by the end of the day all the final finalists were upside down on it...

As a DH rider and non-BMXer I attended this and still thoroughly enjoyed the event. The jumps are impressive, the tricks even more so. I don't get the animosity between different types of riders. It makes no sense, as long as everyone is out having a good time surely we can appreciate the different disciplines, what their limitations are and what can be achieved. Peace and Love

It's cool that pink bike is keen to mix it up once in a while, looks like a cool event!

Photo passes went to bmxers in the know, not so much to company's. I knew almost all the togs at the event or recognized them from around. On the other hand there were a huge number of people on site slrs out and i am sure taking some awesome photos. It was a cool event, but i am yet to see photos that actually give the true scale of things.

the thing about this that i dont like is the obstacles are not in order which to someone who doesn't know the course portrays it all wrong. also the write up itself is poor. Maybe if i had have had time and not been distracted away from the camera i would have given a write up a go, but i didnt. I think this is just a submitted blog post?
  • 2 0
lololol will (onkyponk) maybe one of them was better than one of these but thats about it...
  • 1 0
i know it wasnt that hard to get photo passes, all you had to do was email a month or so ahead, Ricky adam was down im pretty sure those photos will do it justice
  • 1 0
tbh photos are photos, if they had a photo pass, or could have focus'd better it may have made a difference, atleast they got some nice photos with the bmxers in action.
  • 1 1
But why use this for the writeup? the writeup itself is poor, and i am sure someone on this site must have had a press pass. Even if not you could get better photo's from behind the barriers if you look at what has popped up. I think the reason people are moaning is that it is the official write up and for that purpose the photos dont even show the course well
  • 1 0
fair do's surely using pinkbike community photos would be even better?
  • 1 0
lolol onkyponk i swear your only good photos were the ones euan took?

Play fair guys, give these riders the respect they deserve. Those are big jumps taken on small bikes, no sus! What ever you think of BMX, they do take the lead when it comes to progression, even if it is on a smaller bike. I am a MTB rider who also follows BMX and i can tell you this, if any of those top BMX guys ever turn to 26 wheels, then a lot of top MTB guys will be left out in the cold. (Didn't Chad Kagey recently spank loads of MTBers on a borrowed bike?) Accept that we are dealing with two different sports, each has their own pros and cons and each should be respected in their own right. Whatever BMX does today, MTB does tomorrow, Fact! I have yet to see a 26 do a quadruple whip or a BMX tackle the Rampage, and both sides should count themselves lucky that Jamie Bestwick likes his vert.
Give respect where its due!

so much bmx hate jeez! were all riding bikes...lets just play nice haha

Right on! I just like bikes- BMX, MTB, MTX- they're all awesome. When Redbull put their name to something you know it's gonna be quality entertainment whatever the sport.
  • 5 2
Wicked contest, puts mtb events to shame as usual. Its pathetic when a sport backed by the biggest corporate owned bike companies cant put together an event half as good as these even if mtb "freestyle" is there smallest profit margin.

I hear this is a biking website not a mtb one , if your gunna post bmx randomly you should just cover it right or not do it at all or is to many moms complaining about no helmets gunna hurt your monopoly ratings

Every rider was wearing a helmet yesterday.

So tired of hearing this bmx is gnarlier crap. We've gotten to the point where we're comparing to completely different sports. The only overlap is street/park/dj and the bmx bikes are obviously going to excel in these aspects because they have a clear upper hand. As soon as you move towards the slope or the freeride section of mtn biking you could say MTB is way gnarlier then bmx, but then again that would be arrogant because MTB has a clear advantage here. The day a bmxer lands a 3 off of the icon sender on a bmx bike or rips the gobi desert or rides like some of these dudes like aggy or semenuk (sections in strength in numbers, if not seen yet you will see here in a few days) is the day that BMX has truly become gnarlier and is the only day the phrase should truly be accepted.

Otherwise people need to stop bitching which is gnarlier and just ride whichever bike/style they choose to ride.

I was there and didn't see that many tricks that haven't been done on MTB which surprised me a little as I'm always being told the the DJ/Slopestyle scene is behind in terms of tricks. Would have been interesting to see some mountain bikes on the same course...
  • 1 0
spoonyman i would have said the course was a little small for mtb's. was a good day out though
  • 2 0
You're probably right, still would have been interesting to see how the top DJ guys dealt with it...
  • 2 0
mountainyj- i'm failing to see where someone is giving respect to bmx riders for being gnarlier jumpers and tricksters and then goes on to trash mtbing as a whole? i think you need to relax a bit because when someone says that in dj/street/park bmx slays mtb (which is idiocy if you deny that), that doesn't mean that the person thinks that mtbing as a whole is whimpy stuff compared to bmx.... we all know that isn't true.

Didn't see any double flips or flip whips at empire of dirt*

*tricks were still damn impressive, but the BMXers definitely aren't walking all over the Slopestylists. (or Danny Mac if you bring street into it!)
  • 1 1
^ Danny rides street trails which is massively different than bmx street, bud.
  • 12 10
How come that wallride looks burlier than the one claw just built..... The only reason they don't cover more bmx is it makes mtb look less impressive....to me anyway. Mtb has stepped up lately, but so has bmx, and I think they're still more hardcore....
  • 6 3
Anyone who neg props you is just doing so because you put down mtbing but it's true what you wrote. BMX is way gnarlier than mtbing in the dirt jumping/street/park aspects but hey, those bikes are easier to toss around and they've had a bit more time to progress. Regardless though, no one should disagree with what you said because at the end of the day it's insanely more gnarly. 6 g's through a berm into a jump? Are you kidding me with this crap? I wonder how many riders can actually handle that many g's regardless if a jump is in front of it.
  • 3 2
Thumbs up mate. Even though BMX is not my thing, I also believe it is way gnarlier than MTB. And people should respect everyones opinion, instead of giving neg props like fannies.
  • 2 1
Fer sher, I ride almost all types of mountain bikes, but never really bmx'ed. Many of my friends are very talented at bmx, and the videos of these comps show hands down gnarlier stuff on bmx. I think bikes all need to get along. If you ride street on a mountain bike, riding with a skilled bmx rider will show you a different perspective on lines and bike control...

I happened to to be there on Sunday with my son, it only cost a fiver a ticket. But still worth going just to see some of the guys get so much air. Ben Wallace and Drew Bezanzon really flew on some of the stuff. I'm not familiar with the BMX lingo ....but some of the obstacles was downright fast, high, steep and pretty cool.

Ben killed it, but it was a really disappointing final run for the top 4 riders as their qualifying score counted, so Ben had already won it before his final run, meaning that he didn't need to try/could have rolled the whole thing and still win. Three of the final four came off/bailed out before getting through the last three doubles so there was no 'grand finale' that I was kinda hoping. Not too sure how they normally score this kinda thing but thought it could have been done better in my opinion. Other than that, great course with some crazy stuff being thrown down, all for five queenheads. Can't complain!

Saturday was the better day from what i heard with hucker pulling a double flip. Only thing was it must be fecking weird for murray looking at all these dudes wiping out on double flips and coming out unscaved. then again look how many years ahead he was... Anyway i think a jam format plays better to the course than an elimination setup... riders push each other more, and faster so they go big to start and dont just get tired early on... Also the heat setup added to rider fatigue.

6G on a bike? Somehow my physics knowledge doesn't let me believe in it. 6G it's like putting 5 times more than you wight on your shoulders and try to make squat and stop in the middle for a second. Not even strongest person in the world can do it.

Just to keep it balanced Butlerboy, lets see a MTB do this:

Why is PB deleting those polemic comments?....it recently happened to me with a non offensive comment. It starts to be annoying.
  • 2 0
so true^^^cctv up in this b**** almost, but hey i guess thats pinkbike
  • 2 1
Your comment was part of another comment that was down propped by others, once it was below threshold the whole string disappears to the bottom of the pile - no deleting.
  • 1 0
So only because my comment was part of a another one that was down propped, as you said, it has to be hidden?. What if I made a good point with my comment and you guys put it in the "Below threshold threads are hidden" section? It means no one would get to read it. I think the old regulation on the comments section was more accurate.
