Sturdy Cycles

photo

You've seen additive manufacturing through Robot and now Atherton Bikes using carbon and tubes and titanium lugs, but here's a full titanium version from Sturdy Cycles. The theory is the same, but instead of the tubes being bonded into the 3D printer lugs they are welded.

photo

The geometry is fully customisable as all that needs to be done are slight modifications to the junctions and then the tubes slot in place. Sturdy have a range of road bikes and have now debuted their first mountain bike with this XC race bike.

Ted James Design

photo

Ted wanted to make a mountain bike for his 8-year-old son to hit the trails on without spending too much money and this is the result.

photo

The frame is made from recycled bits of other bikes chopped up and put together, so for example the top tube and seat stay come from a Litespeed.

photo

Other neat points include a BMX crank set to keep the Q factor down, a low weight Spinner fork with aluminum stanchions and cut up grips.

Mercredi Grinduro XC bike

photo

Tasked with building the perfect Grinduro (gravel bike racing crossed with enduro style stages) bike, Belgian brand Mercredi came up with this XC hardtail. It was built around a Works angleset which allowed for plenty of experimentation.

photo

The Columbus steel tubes were painted in Grinduro purple by Colourburn Studio for a super sweet looking bike

Shand Shug

photo

Shand are best known for their bike packing and touring bikes, but the Shug is the closest they come to a hardcore trail shredder. The bike only has a 130mm fork, but with a 64° head angle and 490mm reach in size Large, there's still plenty of shredding potential in this frame.

18 Bikes 7

photo

Made in Sheffield, 18 bikes specialise in long and low steel hardtails. Framebuilder Matt has previously only taken orders for custom bikes but is currently in the process of building a larger number of frames to have stock ready to go for potential customers.

photo

The bike pictured has a 475mm reach but sizes go all the way up to 525mm. Matt can tailor everything from tubing to geometry and will even fit a gearbox to a frame if a customer needs.

I love the one from 18 bikes. Looks like so much fun!

Looks awesome... 'currently in the process of building a larger number of frames to have stock ready to go for potential customers' sounds like a logistically nightmare

Definitely stands out from the rest. Nice work Matt.

@enduroNZ: Paging Sick Bicycles. Perfect example of how not to run a business

 Don't show @WAKIdesigns ; he'll have an aneurysm.
  • 1 0
Agreed it looks like it would ride HARD
  • 5 1
@orientdave: no worries, of all things I’ve ever said, my latest bravado questioning the ethos of a long travel Hardtail has sent the shockwaves across the world. People got offended. My friends came to me laughing saying this and that dude asked me why Waki hates hardtails.

I am sorry, of all the things I have said, this has pierced people’s hearts... i am
Proud of myself, I found something worse a MTBer can say than “Sam Hill is not a legend” or “Downhill is stupid”.

@WAKIdesigns: We felt the shockwaves here in Japan! Mind you, we are quite good at feeling those over here!
  • 4 1
@orientdave: Off course, after all Fuji makes hardtails too.
  • 1 0
Agree. I have a thing for top tubes and seat tubes that form one unbroken line from the head tube to the dropouts. That bike looks great.
  • 1 0
 Looks like an absolute ripper!
  • 1 0
 Agreed... I want!
  • 1 0
@enduroNZ: You should check out Sick bikes on how to do that. NOT.

No desire to ride a hard tail but love seeing the coverage by PB of these small truly passionate builders...full suspension as well, some of the best content by far on here lately..,keep it up.
  • 36 0
I thought the same as you til I (insanely cheaply) built up a steel hardtail recently. Now I'm thinking of selling my full sus as the HT is so much more fun to ride on the terrain I ride. Steel is indeed real.

 @alexhyland: Hardtails rule!
  • 6 1
@alexhyland: If you’re committed enough they’re really fast as well.

@thenotoriousmic: yeah lol not with me riding it

”Ted wanted to make a mountain bike for his 8-year-old son to hit the trails on WITHOUT SPENDING TOO MUCH MONEY [...]”

”[...]so for example the top tube and seat stay come from a Litespeed.”

What a wonderful array of logical thoughts! BTW, I am currently working on my first super affordable mini car using Tesla engines and Lamborghini suspension; gonna kick those Kias right in the nads! Big Grin

Oh, that Shand is so sick, begging to shred!
  • 3 0
i agree, its my favorite of this lot. just right all around.
  • 2 0
@twozerosix: it kills. Pretty perfect hardtail.
  • 6 0
Oh, this reminds me, Connor Fearon just took out elite in round one of the South Australian gravity enduro series and Troy Brosnan was second. The big deal about this is Connor was on a hardtail, Kona Honzo to be precise.
  • 1 0
 Wow.
  • 3 0
That says a lot more about the trails then just connor's riding....
  • 9 1
 FYI its Sturdy Cycles guys
  • 7 1
thanks! 'stur cycles' doesn't get you very far in the googling.
  • 2 5
I was like..."Well it does look kinda 'turdy'".....
  • 2 0
Top pic looks like "Turdy Cycles." Intentional?
  • 8 1
How does the seatpost stay in the first bike?
  • 2 0
 Good question.
  • 18 1
 science. now move along
  • 2 0
What looks like bottle mount bolts actually are grub screws that keep the seatpost in place. Yes it is a tall post.
  • 1 1
Eightpins Dropper post probably. Designed to be integrated into the frame. Look at Liteville website or this review: www.pinkbike.com/news/eightpins-ngs1-integrated-dropper-post-review.html
  • 1 0
@andrewbikeguide: It doesn't look anything like Eightpins, at least not like the ones I know from Liteville. They have quite a collar that sits atop the seattube. Maybe it has a wedge system just like the steerer tube that goes into a threaded fork (pre-A-headset stuff). Not sure how that would work with the internal cable routing of the dropper. Or well, the grub screw was a bit of a joke but maybe the seatpost actually does come with an extension that the bottle mount bolts thread into. Just for the sake of cleanliness (not needing a seatpost clamp) and simply because that allows them to shape the top of the seattube a little.
  • 1 0
There is an expanding wedge within the toptube portion of the lug, the bolt to tighten it is on the other side of the frame. It definitely isn't an eightpins post.

Ted James = Dad of the Year candidate... Sic ride for a grom...

I need more welding knowledge to fully understand how well a joint is created between a ti tube and an inserted 'lug', but the result is definitely unique and attactive. From the Sturdy IG account, it looks like there's about 3-4mm of overlapping printed part that fits within the tube, and the weld goes on top of the joint...?
Wonder why they don't print the bottom bracket as its frequently the most complex joint of a welded bike.
Prices from 3300 GBP and up for a frame.
  • 1 0
They do have printed BBs on bikes apparently. Like you said it makes more sense to do so. (Dunno if the BB area on this particular bike IS printed tho)

Those welds look like circumcision scars

'Tasked with building the perfect Grinduro (gravel bike racing crossed with enduro style stages) bike, Belgian brand Mercredi came up with this XC hardtail' - so basically they realised Grinduro is pretty much xc on an enduro format, so the best bike is possibly an fairly normal xc hardtail. hmmmm
  • 1 0
It's xc with quarters, like US football. I don't know what this says.
  • 5 0
 That 18 bikes looks killer
  • 1 0
"Sturdy have a range of road bikes and have now debuted their first mountain bike with this XC race bike. "

a friend of mine has had a sturdy steel hardtail for nearly a year. he had to send the frame back to get the seattube correctly reamed to size

Judas Priest plays every time you ride one of these beauties!!
  • 1 0
 which one?
  • 3 0
@TannerValhouli: All of them... especially the kids bike! Smile
  • 3 0
Priest often plays before I ride my own rig!
  • 4 0
That Sturdy is enough to make me wish I didn’t suck at XC.
  • 5 1
 Grinduro? Sounds awful.

Love the shand and the 18 though!
  • 1 0
On the contrary. It's a huge party from what I hear.
  • 1 0
That purple/yellow color way from Mercredi Grinduro totally takes me back to the late 80's cruisin my skate, BMX & mountain bikes in Nor Cal! Rad paint! Remember the splatter...!
  • 2 0
Grinduro, never heard of it before but gotta get one, just for the Griduro tag.

That first bike with the geometry of the last bike... would be SWEET...
  • 1 0
Is there any full size bike similar looking to Ted James Design? looks like the type of bike that made you want to start mountain biking in the first place!!
  • 1 0
Beautiful bikes, but my favorite it the Atherton hardtial hands down. I'm glad they decided to make a hardtial with all their squishy bikes
  • 1 0
Ha YES!!! Thank you PornBike for that pink article with sexy bikes passionally made with noble materials by velolovers Smile
  • 2 0
Geometry on the mercredi is straight outta 2004
  • 1 0
Well it is designed for the Grinduro where you have a lot of road miles. Many people do it on curly bar bikes.
  • 2 0
 Grinduro.....
  • 2 0
 Yep, it's come to this.
