Bike Check: Reed Boggs' Custom Rampage Yeti SB165 "Enduro" Bike

Oct 15, 2021 at 0:52
by James Smurthwaite

Reed Boggs got a late call up to Red Bull Rampage this year, but that still left enough time for Yeti to commission him this stunning custom bike to tackle the cliffs of Utah. Boggs signed with Yeti at the start of 2020 and, although they don't offer a dedicated downhill or freeride frame like most brands represented on site this week, he feels confident using this beefed-up version of the SB165. Yeti tested the 165 to downhill standards for this very reason and, with a double crown fork fitted, they believe it's every bit as capable of being used as a freeride bike or a bike park smasher.

This particular bike has been tuned by Mark Hild, Yeti's US team mechanic, to be ideally suited for the huge hits of Rampage and then painted in an eye-catching livery for that extra special feeling. Let's get into all the details below.

Nailing the suspension set-up is key at Rampage. Boggs only has 165mm of travel in the rear end and has opted to fit a 500lb spring.

photo
The front end has a bit more give thanks to a 190mm Bomber (the SB165 normally comes with a 180mm fork as standard) but Boggs has stuffed it full of tokens to get maximum ramp up.

photo
The Switch Infinity link is the final part of the suspension puzzle on the SB165.

photo
Reed hasn't opted for the trendy 27.5"x26" freeride mullet set up and is instead sticking with the standard 27.5" front and rear set-up for the SB 165.

photo
The hubs come from Profile.

photo
Boggs is running 2.4" Hutchinson Griffus tyres front and rear with custom inserts.

photo
A 13t SB1 chain tensioner combines with a 34t Race Face chainring on his singlespeed set-up.

photo
RaceFace also handles the pedals, cranks, seat post and bars.

Reed is running Magura MT7 brakes with a 203mm rotor on the front and a 180mm rotor in the rear.

Tuned by MH stands for Mark Hild, Reed's mechanic who works for Yeti and is the mechanic for the US team.

@artistformlyknowasdan: Of course. The 10th has a Kenevo SL so we let her stay, for now...

Best looking Yeti I've seen! If he brought the Yet-e instead, he could ride up though...
  • 54 1
 Yeti
Stans Rims
Carbon Cranks
Tubeless

The list goes on. These are all unrideable attributes that will disallow this man from ever riding down the course. (According to PB comments)

Is this the first carbon Yeti to grace Rampage? I'm pretty surprised by these choices but hey. If he feels good then I feel good.

 works for 3rd place bro.
  • 36 0
Dude is going top 3 today for sure. Dumped 3's, massively clicked tucknos and flipping that massive drop! REEEEEED!
  • 5 0
Would love to see that. Getem kid
  • 2 0
@robito: I might be a little biased because he used to check me in every day at Rays Bike Park but, he is looking more dialed than I've ever seen!
  • 3 0
@ridealltheb1kes: Just seems like a good dude to me who rips, and is good for the scene (whatever that means). He's easy to root for...

Can some translate the origonal comment? Don’t speak slope(style)
  • 11 0
@Almostredbike: he can do the spinny and upside downy tricks.
  • 4 0
@Almostredbike: Certainly - he rides at a level you will never ever achieve in your wildest dreams.

@rampageisnotslopestyle: no dreams of spinny upside down things here. Looks like a crap why to live to me. But impressive nonetheless
  • 9 6
@Almostredbike: People like you are ruining freeride. Go away. Peeps were throwing down whatever tricks they could right from year one. I remember idiots like you calling Bearclaw out when he tossed the first superman out there.

This is freeride. This is what it looks like in motion. Don't like it? Thank god you can view something less fun. Go do that.
  • 3 5
@sherbet: thats all a bit harsh? A what point did my comment say freeride was bad? Dreaming of being a rampage rider is not something me?
Or are u still there in jocks crying a people expressing an option that doesn’t match yours

Go express your "option" to someone who cares, chump.
  • 6 0
@sherbet: you obviously cared enough to reply, just saying.
  • 1 1
@sherbet: oooo the big tough boy…i’m so hurt
  • 3 2
@nyhc00: You are right, I should have rephrased.

I'm just sick of the gatekeeping in this community. That said, I'm sure none of the riders really care what some random hater on the internet thinks. I should follow that lead.

Cheers.
  • 2 0
@sherbet: not trying to put words into anyone’s mouth but the way I read @Almostredbike’s comment was more about the risk vs reward of being a pro free rider. It’s a short career with a lot of injuries and no guarantee of a significant payday.
  • 3 0
@nyhc00: "I don't speak slopestyle" is absolutely a comment about Rampage not being freeride anymore.
  • 2 2
@sherbet: as a self proclaimed gatekeeper of the freeride community, would it not be more productive to an educational stand point as apposed the confrontational one you did against me.

But first you could also take a step back and expand your ability to interpret the underlying reasoning behind peoples comments. Further it this you could potentially listen to interviews where multiple rampage athletes refer to it as a slopestyle event.
  • 30 2
Wait! Carbon crank and 180 rear rotor at rampage? Impossible he is not gonna make it to the bottom for sure.
  • 1 2
At first glance I was surprised about the rotor too but I guess on stuff that steep the rear brake doesn't really offer a lot of stopping power anyway
  • 4 0
@n734535: I think the idea is that the wheel is better with less power compared to locking.
  • 1 0
@n734535: I think its because its not sustained braking over 2,000 feet of vertical drop, like a DH course. The rotors have time to cool off
  • 5 0
You don't need big rotors if you don't plan to slow down! yee-haw!
  • 1 0
 3rd place baby.
  • 26 1
With the 500lb spring and slow rebound I wouldn't be surprised if it Boggs down on normal terrain.
  • 24 0
It's okay, think the rider will Reed the terrain and ride accordingly.
  • 5 0
Its a niche setup for sure, yeti wouldn't doubt its been vetted and tested thoroughly.
  • 4 2
Hey! Always good to see another dad on here!
  • 13 2
clever idea, water bottle for the desert !!
  • 8 0
Missed opportunity imho. Imagine the marketing potential of having a bottle cage that held up to rampage. Fidlock should be all over this.
  • 3 0
@LaurensVR: Imagine if it falls and makes him crash though
  • 11 1
Profile hubs are just pure sex
  • 1 0
Yes! I’m waiting on a set of their cranks for my DJ bike. I’m going to powder coat them to compliment my frame that is also getting powder coated.
  • 11 2
This is the most non-dentist dentist bike I’ve ever seen.
  • 10 3
Common Yeti make a high pivot 303 already.
  • 5 0
that looks like some tribal artwork on that frame, isn't yeti against that...
  • 2 1
Wow, it feels like he's under-biked to me (disclaimer: I have almost no idea what I'm talking about)... I wonder if his line choice is going to be a little on the safe side because of this? Or maybe hes light enough that it wont matter?
  • 2 0
You would think he’s under biked but aggy and sorge rode it previously on enduro bikes. So I’d say it’s most important to be on the bike that you’re comfortable with.
  • 2 0
I think you should ride a Yeti before commenting, or just watch Richie on his. Plenty of bike.
  • 4 0
Well there you go. A great run spoiled by him killing his rim and blowing his insert right out of the tire.
  • 6 3
Is he a small guy? 500lb spring for the huge hits? I need more than that just for sag Frown
  • 6 0
I don’t think it is so useful to compare your setting with their
They have most likely a different shock tune , and bike geometry
  • 2 0
He's on a size small, must be a small guy
  • 1 1
@DGWW: wow I missed that, my bad!
  • 1 0
I met Reed in person a few years ago and I'd guess he's like 145–155lbs?
  • 2 0
 @Almostredbike: m.pinkbike.com/news/bike-check-reed-boggs-yeti-sb65-freeride-build.html

Saying he's 183cm which is L at yeti sizing, I guess he just prefers smaller bike to trow around
  • 6 0
I'm 6'2" and currently riding a 5010 in medium after years of large 29ers.

Will not be going back. Stability and lap times really do not define MTB riding.
  • 3 1
 @sherbet: what if I suck?
  • 4 0
@PhillipJ: You're a beauty, mate. Keep shining. You do not suck.
  • 1 0
Wait I think that was longer ago when he was smaller haha. He looks taller than I thought. probably like 170lbs??
  • 4 0

Being a bmx rider, it’s so cool to see profile hubs and other bmx branded parts on new builds.
  • 1 0
I see a lot of single speeds this year on the Rampage bikes, what are the spacer blocks these guys are using??
  • 1 0
I’ve recently got a Reverse components that screws straight onto an xd driver body, they do a bunch of cool well made stuff for a decent price
  • 3 1
Thank god he has switch infinity for all that single speed pedaling.
  • 2 1
After listening to it customers Yeti will be putting water bottles cages on all of their bikes including DH ones
  • 1 1
Can't wait for the dh bike

@bok-CZ: been holding my breath for like 10 years
  • 9 0
@robito: That has to be some kind of record.
  • 1 0
@robito: the sb165 is pretty close I was really thinking about getting one and maybe use some longer stroke shock to bump up the travel... Ended with sb150
  • 1 0
AND including a free toothbrush, dental floss, and travel-size tube of toothpaste!
  • 1 0
@bok-CZ: Find a 303 used. Yeti had to find a used DJ frame for Reed Wink
  • 1 0
such a unique looking bike, man. the saddle, brakes, and shock just tie it all together.

I don't particularly like Yeti bikes, but I enjoy this quite a bit. Hope he does well
  • 1 0
Sick bike. How’s the 165 for pedaling around? Who’s got one? How’s it compare to the 2019 Patrol I used to have?
  • 1 0
I have one with a 170mm 29 fork (prob drop to 160) and a 190mm 27.5 fox 40. Its ok for pedaling but not amazing. Gets to the top even with tech climbing…just a bit more effort.
  • 1 0
I have one as my do everything bike. Z1 air set to 180, push rear shock, 27.5 F/R. I love it, climbs great. Weight isn't bad at all.
  • 2 1
I have an SB165 with a 170mm ZEB... tried it as a mullet but was too slack. Pedals very well. The switch infinity really does an amazing job with antisquat. Some of my Strava PR's are with the SB165... going against my other bikes (TR Sentinel, and TR Spur).
  • 2 0
 Maerk tuned that bike!!!!!! Maaeerkk
  • 1 0
I thought this was a typo and you meant to write Maersk. Based on the blue and white colors. Same as the shipping/drilling company.
  • 1 0
love the paint on this one!
  • 1 0
profile hubs i had no idea
  • 1 0
i wonder if he enjoys to read books in his free time
  • 1 0
I need some profile mtb hubs in my life.
  • 1 1
Lovely. The coils look way to close together for that to be a 500 spring, which would surely be too soft for hucking.
  • 1 0
what's that brown frame color called?
  • 1 0
 my money is on him.
  • 1 1
atleast it isn't a downcountry bike.
  • 2 4
Good thing they fixed the rear triangles for the 2021+ SB's

How do I find that Team America spew GIF on here ?
