Bike Shop Employee Seriously Injured Attempting to Stop Thieves [Update: Thieves Arrested]

Update: March 26, 2019: Police officials say grab-and-run thieves had stolen bikes from a number of Southern California shops

BRAIN reports that the brazen thieves who dashed out with a $10,000 Specialized Stumpjumper from IN-Cycle Bicycles in Chino, California, in February, and then ran over store manager Megan Rodriguez with their GMC Sierra pickup truck while making their escape were arrested. Ronald Wolfe, 20, of Frazier Park, California; Kyle Stewart, 27, of Taft, California; and Nichole Stewart, 23, of Taft, are the suspects in the case and will be charged with robbery, conspiracy and attempted murder by the Chino Police department.

The In-Cycle robbery turned out to be a rodeo: Reportedly, Megan Rodriguez chased the suspects on foot and was brutally run over by the female diver of the escape truck, after which, two other shop employees chased down the robbers in a car and retook the bike after the GMC pickup became mired in traffic. Megan, who suffered a number of fractures and head injuries is recovering well. In-Cycle says they considered the incident to be a work-related injury, so she has full benefits, and expressed huge thanks to the cycling community, including neighboring bike shops, who donated over $35,000 to Megan's Gofundme campaign to help with the inevitable burdens she will face during her rehabilitation.

A bike shop employee in California has suffered serious injuries after being run over by fleeing bike thieves, Fox 11 reports.

The employee, Megan, spotted two men attempting to steal a $10,000 Specialized Epic at around 4:15pm on Tuesday and gave chase on foot. She was struck when they attempted to escape in a pickup truck driven by a woman. Megan was hospitalized with a broken pelvis, a broken foot and fractured skull.

A second employee, Raul Ureno also chased the truck and attempted to punch through the window. He then got into a separate vehicle, drove after the suspects and eventually recovered the bike.

The three suspects remain at large and the bike store is offering a $10,000 reward to anyone who can help police find them.

The first suspect was described as a white male in his 20s, approximately 5 feet, 9 inches tall and between 185 to 195 pounds. He was seen wearing a black baseball cap, sunglasses, a black Hollister hooded sweatshirt, ripped denim jeans and black shoes.

The second suspect was described as a white or Hispanic male also in his 20s, approximately 5 feet, 11 inches tall and around 165 pounds. He was wearing a white and blue baseball cap, sunglasses, a black jacket with a gray hood, a red and blue flannel shirt, black pants and black shoes with a white lining.

The female driver was described as having a thin build and short stature with brown hair in a bun. She was wearing round sunglasses, a black hooded sweatshirt and red lipstick.

The getaway vehicle was a “blueish gray” GMC Sierra truck with a black paper plate on the rear and chrome detailing on the sides. Police said the truck was missing chrome trim on the left rear door.

A GoFundMe has been started for Megan that is hoping to raise $25,000 to aid her recovery. The total stands at $16,000 at the time of writing

Those with information were asked to call Chino Police Detective Carrino at 909-334-3005 or email ccarrino@chinopd.org.

Folks, I think we've found our PB Valentine. Instead of roses and chocolate, donate to that gofundme and get Megan get back on her feet!

Why doesn't the shop offer health insurance? I may be a commie socialist liberal, but I walk the walk. I give my employees free platinum level no deductible insurance. I hate that we have become a country where you have to pay for a health crisis by gofundme. And if you are selling 10,000 dollar bikes then you should be able in invest in your employees. And none of that part time 1099 BS either.

@oscartheballer: How bout we focus on Megan and not who does or doesn't give health insurance?
  • 146 11
@oscartheballer: Also why didn't they explain to her that her safety is worth more than that bike [which is almost certainly insured]. Any corner store employee in a city gets trained on that; "don't risk your safety protecting the store's property"
  • 75 45
@oscartheballer: Perhaps the hospitals, doctors and pharmaceutical companies could not charge us 50 bucks for Tylenol. Also maybe she has health insurance but it doesn't cover the deductible and being out of work for awhile means you can't pay your bills. But then again I'm more of a Libertarian mindset, less government mandates and intervention in our lives the better.

@oscartheballer : I have health insurance. My out of pocket deductible is still $5500. And I probably would be out of work for a bit if I had a broken foot, fractured pelvis and fractured skull.

@oscartheballer: The article doesn't say she has no insurance. There is a GoFundMe with a goal of $25,000. That's not enough to cover her med bills, that enough to cover her deductible and buy a few Chinese take-out meals when she gets out of the hospital and maybe some clothes or other odds and ends that need to be different during recovery.

Keep being Rad Megan. Speedy recovery! Have meal on me during recovery!

@oscartheballer: Doesn't seem like you understand what the term "free market" means; you providing benefits that your competitors don't, as a way to attract or retain employees. You're *free to do that, in the labor *market. Your employees are free to accept or decide it's not worth it. No one threatened to take away your business if you offered that benefit, nor if you don't.
  • 33 5
@oscartheballer: That’s awesome that you provide your workers with great insurance. I wish every company did that. Unfortunately most companies DO Not! The company I work for has Shit insurance and it’s expensive. Luckily my wife’s company offers much better insurance. That being said, I just broke my ankle and will easily be $5000-7000 out of pocket by the time I pay everything off. I guarantee her injuries are far worse than mine. She also works at a bike shop and maybe makes minimum wage or just over that. If she has bare bones insurance like most people she could easily be $15,000 or more out of pocket in a hurry. Sorry but most people don’t have disability insurance. Most companies aren’t willing to pony up for quality health insurance because they can’t afford it and they don’t have to.
I can tell you from experience that she will have to fight the work comp insurance company to get them to cover anything. Possibly even have to go so far as getting a lawyer and taking them to court. Our health care system is so messed up it’s not even funny. Greed Greed and more Greed. So Sad.

@oldtech: blaming greed for your problems is like blaming gravity when you trip and fall. You can get mad all you want, it isn't going to change anything.

If you think a bike shop (notoriously low-profit business), with probably only a handful of employees, in California (notorious for doing everything in the gov's power to make small businesses unprofitable) is raking in money but providing second rate insurance... you don't know much about how the world works.

If I work for a scumbag employer that offered zero benefits I would tell the thief have a nice day and enjoy your bike and let him steal it without giving him any resistance. I would then inform my Dirtbag employer that offers me nothing what happened to his merchandise. I don't work for anyone else I work for myself. I do not need a pimp to provide me with work.

First, speedy recovery to Megan, the fearless exist forever and you are definitely fearless! Secondly, I'm calling your BS @oscartheballer and standing up for the bike shop you're judging! I don't get why you "commie socialist liberals" always feel the need to judge others, a little righteous pompous a-holes are we? 1st you don't understand what a 1099 is by associating it to a part time employee. 1099's are independent contractors and really not supposed to be working out of your location, although that is possible they are not considered part time employees. 2nd, workman's comp and state disability insurance are mandatory even for part time employees, you don't "offer" that you righteous prick, you have to have it for your employees. 3rd, depending where you are in the country you can pay up to single rate of $991.00/Month and family rate of $2816/Month for a platinum plan and most platinum plans still have deductibles. So for a family employee, depending where you are, you may have to dish out about $34,000/yr for a family and $12,000/yr for single rates just for insurance! Most bike shop employees barely make $30,000/yr and that is a very generous figure. 3rd, I checked your state and could not find any Platinum plans without a deductible. Anthem Platinum Pathway HMO is the best plan I could find with a 500/1500 deductible. Take it from someone that has lived in socialized countries, I lived in Greece and France and had free healthcare, it was a f*cking nightmare when you really needed it! If you wanted a good Dr. you had to go out of the "system" to pay for it or wait an entire day to see a Dr at one of the shitty clinics! In France/Sweden/Denmark employment taxes are between 45%, for mid income, and 66.6% for high earners! Can you imagine paying well over half your income to taxes!? Id rather pay for my own health insurance and itemize the expense from my taxes thereby paying way less in taxes. I want control of my life, not some bureaucracy! Now tell me who's getting free healthcare in socialized countries? Nothing is free and Margaret Thatcher said it the best... 'The Problem with Socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.'

@dirtyrig: In some point u are right, the quality of health care in Europe isn't that great unless you have private health care...but; you can ride, walk or drive from Portugal to Greece through other EU countries, and you don't have to worry if something happens to you. You are always covered. Health care is almost free in Europe, usually, you pay about 10% of your income and you have all your family covered-doesn't matter how many kids you have or if your wife/husband works or not. you can always pay if you want something better, you can always get insurance, but in the worst scenario, you are always covered, doesn't matter what happens to you or who does it. And that is a huge achievement on this continent.

(read 96% failure rate, or 96% of the money given to free education only benefits the colleges). My scope was limited to the US only, and I researched about 15 different attempts at it. Ironically, the main cause of failure was the "free" education the US receives in K-12 is terrible and doesn't really prepare you for college.

I won't ping on healthcare, but there are hundreds if not thousands of free clinics across the US - if you don't go to one, then there is your answer as to why that type of care shouldnt be forced onto others.

@dirtyrig: "Nothing is free and Margaret Thatcher said it the best... 'The Problem with Socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.'

Hhmm..I lived under the rule of that woman, the "peoples money" let's call them taxes for fun, she had a hold of in that era, she spent on killing off industry, healthcare (the NHS) the transport system as a whole, education, and most forms of civil rights, among many, many other things for nigh on 11 years!

Fact, she lost her premiership due needing more "peoples money" via a new thing called The poll tax (a tax that demanded the same amount of everyone, whatever there financial means, be they rich or poor) to attempt to continue dismantling said state infrastructure, to then hand it over to private non regulated, overpriced, and totally inefficacious, company's that cared not one jot about weather or not your leg may be falling off, when you arrived at a private hospital for example, as they're interest's were purely profit related, and not a great deal else!
Thankfully she, and her poll tax didn't make it, but she'd done plenty of damage in the process, and its still taking many years of state investment to rebuild from those dark days, even now.

You want to pay though the nose for greedy, inefficient, unregulated healthcare?, your welcome to it mate, good luck to ya with that!
I'm no socialist, but I'll take my healthcare nice and free of a doctor asking me how my bank balances health might be, before they inquire into what may, or may not, be wrong with me, the moment I get though the door.

While your at it, please don't quote Margaret Thatcher, as being the savour of a country you clearly have no idea about.
I do, as I've lived within it all my life, and I can assure you she wasn't!

@MatthewCarpenter: In the US if you're a waiter you will most likely have free medical insurance, anyone below a certain income level can receive free medical insurance in the US through the exchange. If you have to pay for your own insurance it will be low for low income levels, much lower in retrospect to what you guys have to pay in employment taxes. If you think corporations are robbing us, then in the same argument I can say you're being robbed by your government. You really think your healthcare system is free? What is the employment tax rate in Austria? If you make 60,000+ euros then you're paying a 50% rate and a capitals gain tax rate of 25%. Half of your income goes to the government, so who's getting robbed? Your country barely has 9 million people, NYC alone has more people than that, do you really think that the same economic structure in place in Austria will work for a country the size of ours? And why do so many people in Europe use private health care when they can use the free government sponsored one? I lived in Greece and France, their universal health care was a bit scary. I had to use private Dr's that did not take the government insurance or risk having my kidney removed for a stomach virus! lol I hope you're better at surgery than at mathematics/economics or you will be one of those Dr's people avoid to go to and would rather pay for a private Dr. instead.

Brave of her, but possibly a little foolish. However, hindsight is always 20:20 and I probably would have done the same. Hopefully she has a full and quick recovery.

@Thustlewhumber: I'd imagine your research would have a very different outcome had you done it in Europe where a vast majority of third level students pay little or no money for their education and I dare say, much more that 4% complete the course.

@dirtyrig I don't know where you got those percentages but if you lived in Europe, you should know that most EU countries have a progressive income tax rates. So, while the top end tax rate in some countries can be as high as you state, these rates are usually applied on top earners and only on the top portion on their income, thereby affecting a small proportion of population and not in a way that would negatively affect their quality of life. Additionally, you should understand that these high taxes pay for a lot more than healthcare. Things like social welfare, education (including third level and often higher), childcare, state pensions and a range of other services such as public libraries, water supply etc.

Some time ago, I ended up in hospital after a bad accident, which was entirely my fault and avoidable. I was rushed to hospital where I spent 8 days in total, underwent surgery and numerous tests and it cost me €375. I experienced no delays and the service I got from the medical staff was top notch. I don't have private health insurance. All this happened in Ireland where the healthcare system isn't anywhere near as good and efficient as in some of the other EU countries you named.

So, while I'd love to be paying no tax if it were possible, I'll gladly pay a bit more and have piece of mind that me and my family will be looked after if I find myself in a situation similar to Megan's. You can keep your low income tax, high child care costs, extortionate student loans, high deductibles and keep living that american dream while getting those fat cats richer. I sincerely hope you never find yourself in a situation that might cause you to think I was right.
  • 12 14
@clemson: The word "socialism" is being thrown around a bit too loosely here, I apologize. I also never mentioned anything other than healthcare, I never said living in Europe was shitty, I actually loved it. My point was only that nothing is free, someone has to pay for it. You really think that education and healthcare are free in Europe? Just take a look at the ridiculous employment taxes and long term unemployment rates "most" of Europe has been plagued with since the late 90's. Why do you think you guys have such high taxes, and other than Germany and Switzerland, also high unemployment? You don't think all the entitlement programs you guys have play a role in that? You lived in three of the wealthiest countries in Europe, so I have a feeling you have not seen the problems other European countries are facing, largely because of all the entitlement programs in place. In the two countries I've lived in, it was quite the opposite. I've never met more people without work than in Greece and France and the ones employed were coming home with 1/3 of their pay because of the ridiculous employment taxes, nothing is free is all I'm saying. What you think is free is an illusion and you've fallen for it hook line and sinker! Lets see you guys handle this with a population the size of our country and the vastness of our borders, because most of Europe is economically in shambles. The health care in this country can be solved easily and without universal health care, allow insurance company's to compete across state lines and insurance costs will drop to nothing, but we are over regulated and currently can not do that.

@BartDM: You are right and your point is valid but not completely accurate. Yes, you can drive from Portugal to Greece, through other EU countries and be covered for emergency's, but we can do the same. I can travel from New York to California and I'm still covered in case of a emergency under my insurance. Don't forget how big our country is, one of our states alone is the size of a country in Europe. You guys have some of the highest employment taxes and the majority of the countries in Europe have some of the highest rates of unemployment, why is that? In France you can end up paying over 66% of your income to the government, depending on your income level, why such high taxes? You don't think all these entitlement programs have anything to do with this problem, of course they do, its central to why you pay such high taxes because nothing is free! What we pay here in insurance we make up for in lower employment taxes, at the end I bet its almost the same! Everyone can be covered in the US and if your income is too low you get it for free. Look, nothing is perfect I understand that, but nothing is for free either, someone has to pay for it. Its also not equally the same in every country in Europe, the economy is not the same in Germany as it is in Portugal and Greece for example, you hear very different interpretations from people living in Germany than you do from people living in Portugal.

I spoke about things that I know exactly about and the rest are my opinions. Nothing of what you stated above are actual facts but opinions and assumptions and I never brought up Margaret Thatcher because of how great she was, nor that she was a savior of your country. As a matter of fact I never even brought up your country at all, you just came up with all that in your mind, can you point out where I said anything like that? I only brought up her "quote" because its spot on correct! The rest you assumed and came up with on your own because I inadvertently hurt your ego. So I apologize for making you a whinny bitch, but I will bring up or talk about anything I f*cking want so don’t assume because it makes an "ass" out of "u" and "me"!

Oh and by the way, your healthcare is not free, it is paid for by general taxation, so how the f*ck is that free?? How much is the VAT in your country by the way 20%, in ours its 0% and our sales tax is between 0% to 10.5% depending what state you live in? Someone making only 6000 GBP in your country has to pay a 20% tax rate, in our country its only 12% and we have no VAT and very low sales tax! Lets face facts, the NHS in your country is almost broke and completely underfunded, why is that? Where's the money coming from to fund it properly, the people, so get ready to pay more down the line! Nothing is free, nothing!

@dirtyrig: USA doesn’t have a healthcare problem, we have a motivation problem! If you get an (valuable degree) education or a trade and actually work you can afford the best healthcare in the world! I could go on a rant about over taxation and the socialist’s (it’s what they call themselves) agenda! Most everyone that I know that lives the action sport lifestyle (mt. Biker, skiers. . . ie) chose that lifestyle and then cry because they are poor with no benefits or retirement!
  • 1 2
@MX298: not only that but lots of people give up the job or life they prefer to work a decent job that gives them good insurance. Growing up in MTB I knew (and still know) lots of talented riders that worked their day job becaus they knew they were better off with what that job had to offer than the small prospect of fortune and glory through two wheels. On the other end of the spectrum I knew (but don’t hear from them much) others that took the dive and tried to make it only to bankrupt themselves, live on couches and end up doing nothing.

@nojzilla: because if the bitchthief is helping two other people steal a 10k bike then her cut is only $3,333.3 and would hardly cover the cost of this poor woman’s expenses. And that’s assuming she would have been successful otherwise someone like her has no way of paying for health care, let alone someone else’s that she hurt. Working for 25 cents an hour in prison sure isn’t going to pay for the victims healthcare because she wouldn’t be in prison long enough to work off the debt because she would be out after serving a small portion of her sentence. I could ask all sort of questions about your country (especially London and it leadership) but I don’t because outsid eof what I read in the news I don’t know much about it. You should exercise the same prudence.

@Kamba6: Here, knock yourself out with taxation facts: shieldgeo.com I stated that most European countries taxes are high due to "entitlement" programs, you know that means not just health care right? I lived in Greece and France so I can tell you what I experienced there when I lived there. If you wanted good health care you needed to go out of the system and pay a private Dr. They do it in Ireland as well right? Why do 40% of Irish residents take out a private insurance policies when your free health care is so good? transferwise.com/us/blog/healthcare-system-in-ireland

I wasn't even saying our health insurance system is good, but the quality of care in the USA is top notch. If it weren't no one would send their loved ones here to get help when things were really bad. When the only hospitals in the world, that can help you fight certain cancers or rare diseases, only exist in the USA what does that say about your health care system?

We have progressive tax rates here in the USA as well, its no different than Europe. However, when less than 50% of the population of a country pays no taxes at all, where do you think the rest comes from? That's exactly what France is going through right now. Its a bit presumptuous to say that only a "small" portion of the population pays higher rates and it will not affect the quality of their life, are you one of these high earners or are you making an assumption.

You can't compare our universities to European counterparts, they are very different. Our universities have way more services than European ones because most American students travel away from home to go to a university. So our campuses are much bigger mainly because of the size of our dormitories, etc... Some of the campuses in the USA are small cities and hence much more expensive to operate, but you can go to a local state university for a fraction of the cost if you are a resident of that state: www.lawnstarter.com/blog/college-rankings/biggest-college-campuses-in-us
www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2018/09/why-is-college-so-expensive-in-america/569884

And why do so many other people from all around the world pay to send their children to the USA to get a higher education when the education is free in other countries? Why not send them to Europe instead? www.mastersportal.com/articles/1216/7-reasons-why-students-think-usa-is-the-holy-grail-of-higher-education.html

What happened to Greece with all their entitlement programs? The point is that nothing is free, not even close, no mater how you want to play with the words someone still has to pay for these entitlements or they will collapse, how is that free?

Don't get me wrong, Ireland actually has their act together, not so a few years ago though when unemployment was through the roof!. Out of all the countries in Europe they are one of the lowest taxed, but how can you compare a country of 4.7 million to a country the size of the USA and think its possible economically to follow the same model as Ireland or other European countries with regards to entitlements? Many US cities alone are bigger than your entire country. It is also naive to blame everything on the corporations, our corporations are already taxed more than corporations in Europe, or most places in the world, I don't think its that at all. Our country is made up mostly of small to mid size company's and most are owned and operated by regular people like you and me. They're not all these scary boogy men trying to get over on you, that's fear mongering at its finest allowing us to put the blame on something other than ourselves.

Over regulation in the USA is killing the ability for competition and consolidation to take affect so that a market economy can operate like a market economy should. If they allowed insurance company's to compete throughout the country, the debate would be over and we would pay very little for amazing health care without any of the downfalls that universal health care brings with it, but we love to regulate everything!!!

  • 4 4
@Farrier-Dave: Just incase you won't bother reading here are little tidbits.
"Canada's single-payer healthcare system forced over 1 million patients to wait for necessary medical treatments last year. That's an all-time record.

Those long wait times were more than just a nuisance; they cost patients $1.9 billion in lost wages, according to a new report by the Fraser Institute, a Vancouver-based think-tank.

Lengthy treatment delays are the norm in Canada and other single-payer nations, which ration care to keep costs down. "
  • 5 7
 @Farrier-Dave: More
"TORONTO — When Sharon Shamblaw was diagnosed last summer with a form of blood cancer that could only be treated with a particular stem cell transplant, the search for a donor began. A Toronto hospital, 100 miles east of her home in St. Mary's, Ontario, and one of three facilities in the province that could provide the life-saving treatment, had an eight-month waiting list for transplants.

Four months after her diagnosis, Shamblaw headed to Buffalo, New York, for treatment. But it was too late. She died at the age of 46, leaving behind a husband and three children, as detailed by the Toronto Star."

In citing those numbers in its 2015 report, "Leaving Canada for Medical Care," the organization said difficulties in obtaining timely medical care at home is, increasingly, leading Canadians to seek it abroad. "It is possible [they] may have left the country to avoid some of the adverse medical consequences of waiting for care, such as worsening of their condition, poorer outcomes following treatment, disability, or death," the report says. "Some may leave simply to avoid delay and to make a quicker return to normal life."

Canadians could expect to wait 9.8 weeks for medically necessary treatment after seeing a specialist in 2014, the researchers found, three weeks more than the time physicians considered to be clinically "reasonable."

No one is trying to invade you for any number of reasons, sure. One reason is you’re all so peaceful, loving and above it all. Another one of those reasons is that 80 percent of you live within 100 miles of our border. So an attack on you, it’s in our best interest to have your back. We will be there. Your politicians know that. They can spend elsewhere. That’s all I’m saying.
  • 5 3
@TheR: WOW, Yes thanks for having our back... but heres the thing. A land invasion on Canada in 2019 is ridiculous due to the fact the invading force would have to cross the Atlantic or Pacific ocean to invade. We can cross off the Atlantic because that would either be a European(our UN buddies) nation or African (pirates we could take) so that leaves and the only 2 military forces coming form the east with the clout... Russia or China. There again lets be real, a force landing in Canada large enough to take on the US would be so large that they would be easily detected by satellite surveillance an if Russia or China were to do it they would take the shortest water crossing to reduce the fish in a barrel effect... ALASKA! So the reality of it is the most likely country to invade Canada is... YUP MERICA! why our natural resources and your right we couldn't do shit about it and well still say 'sorry'

In New Zealand, we have good (not great) free universal healthcare. And our highest tax rate is 33% for individuals and 28% for companies. The higher tax rates in Scandinavian countries don’t just pay for health care. So saying you’d rather just pay for health insurance is a little bit silly.  @Farrier-Dave: I worked with Americans in Haiti for 3 years. I did a poll on Canada day to see how many Americans new the capital of Canada. If I remember correctly, only 40% new it and these were educated, people. A higher percentage of educated Haitians new Canada's capital. From then on when I heard an American talking shit about Canada I'd ask him/her if he/she knew the capital of Canada if he/she didn't the conversation would be over. Now I have many very dear friends who are American; however, most Americans know almost nothing about Canada and they also don't care to know anything about it. That's just the way it is. As far as health care is concerned, the cost in the States is higher than anywhere else in the world. Our system isn't perfect but it's not anywhere near as bad as opponents of "socialized" medician in the US say it is. They target the Canadian system because proponents of "socialized" medician in the US look to Canada and other countries as examples. It's politics and it results in the suffering of people who are vulnerable like this bike shop employee.

While you’re at it travel the world, eatablish well rounded cultural experiences to aide you in being versed when it comes to world affairs. Excellent contribution towards a retirement plan and the ability to retire in your early 40’s with a pension (if you start early enough)

The above may not be everyone’s cup of tea so I’ll segway with this...

“Capacity” is not an excuse, every human has the ability to achieve the most brilliant version of themself IF they apply themselves. Nobody is going to do it for you. I believe every human has one trait or ability about themself that is worth a million dollars or the world to commend them for. It’s up to them to share it with the rest of us

And also, “opportunity” is also a moot point, we have enough programs in this country to put illegal immigrants through university, we damn sure have enough for the rest of the populous as well. Granted it may not be Harvard you get into, and you’ll still need to get experience under your belt before you can expect 6 figures....but all those facilities are there for the motivated individual by RIGHT. Now the indicufuals that reproduce generations of welfare recipients with no intention to deviate from that lifestyle....well they can just exist feeling a sense of fulfillment and entitlement all on their ignorant own
  • 3 2
@roninagent23: Your "belief" in what you just wrote doesn't mean it's true. It's just your opinion. I prefer facts, and since you mentioned the army, here's an army related fact. The US Army will not accept recruits with an IQ lower than 85. That is a significant proportion of population. So, if the army thinks they have no use for such an individual, how exactly do you suggest they reach that million dollar potential you "believe" they have?

Capacity is an excuse. At least for those individuals who are not even good enough to be canon fodder according to your army. Maybe, some of those people have reached their potential, and that potential isn't good enough, according to the capitalist society in which they live. Those people need help, and saying they can't have it because you "believe" they have it in them to work harder, be better and achieve more is the pinicle of western capitalist arrogance.
  • 1 0
@Kamba6: the Army doesn’t give IQ tests. The jobs you qualify for are based on one’s GT score which is assessed by a test one is given at the recruiting station. 110 to the max score which is 140 to my recollection will make you eligible for all jobs in the Army withthe exception of certain specialized ones. I don’t know if there is a score that eliminates one from service. I was lucky and scraped by with a 113 haha
  • 1 0
@CaliCol: Correct but, "The AFQT is applied as sections of the ASVAB, and the score represents an applicants percentile ranking in the general population. The 31st percentile represents an IQ of approximately 93; the 10th %-ile represents IQ 81"

The law dictates a preference for IQ’s above 93, and a prohibition on IQ’s below 81."

So the test, while not exactly an IQ test gives results that have strong correlation to IQ. In fact the army is not permitted to accept more than 20% of total applicants from the 10th to 31st percentile category in any given year. Meaning that, even if your IQ is around 92 as an equivalent of the AFQT test scores, you may not be accepted on that basis alone.

@74tenomresc: What happened to your friend is horrible and I'm sorry to hear that. But it sounds to me like you're the closed minded one if you're willing to tar all illegal immigrants with the same brush just because of a few rotten ones. I would argue that most illegal immigrants, you are so keen to demonise, are hard working honest folk, looking for a better life and fleeing those very people that did that to your friend. BTW, you never mentioned if those who executed your friend were apprehended and officially identified as illegal immigrants.
  • 1 1
@Kamba6: it was two people, one was actually a firefighter and the one who shot Max was an illegal immigrant from Mexico. The firefighter is doing 20 years, the Mexican man was deported. BOTH are shitty humans. and i dont mean to "demonize" all illegal immigrants. I have associated with many, and you are right most are decent human beings. i dont know what the solution to the problem is, i dont have all the answers and am not claiming to. i think a decent place to start though is enforcing laws that are on the books, and at the end of the day the onus of doing the right thing and following the rules and being a decent human is on the individual. and here i am getting involved in the political discussion on a bike forum post that is supposed to be helping a fellow industry person who has been injured. this is where i check out because there are too many conflicting ideas for people to have civil discourse, and i have now become part of the problem. just to clarify, i think Trump and Hillary are both shitty, and i didnt vote for either.

@dirtyrig: Haha OK it's apparently OK to make up anything? Here's the truth. A mid income tax in Sweden is 30%. If you earn approx double a mid-income you pay 50% on the amount that exceeds double mid-income. 30% of your intrests are also tax deductable. So it's NOWHERE near the tax you are making up. And yes our healthcare is free, I can't decide the quality but you can read here yourself en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_quality_of_healthcare.

And how stupid people are in the fight-or-flight reflex. Don't get me wrong here, the thieves are responsible for her injuries. They came and caused a scene and she got run over trying to get the bike back. None of this would have happened if the thieves never came in the first place. But her getting run over... I'm not quite sure how that happened though? Unless she was trying to block the truck from leaving? You are supposed to let them drive off and call the police. Your life is not worth a $10,000 bicycle. I understand that in the moment, adrenaline takes over and people don't always make the choices they would have normally. Nobody else got run over though.. The truck didn't drive into the shop.. Common sense tells you not to stand in front of a moving vehicle. Thieves do not care if you are standing in the way. Why are you standing in front of a truck driving towards you? Unless she was struck from behind while chasing after one of the thieves. That would be the only reasonable explanation. Otherwise, it's just pure stupidity to try and block a truck from leaving by just standing in front of it. Basically asking to be run over. They are thieves, they don't care. Don't stand in front of their car as they are leaving. You took that risk and they ran you over. What in the world did people do before GoFundME!? It's a world full of begging and asking for hand-outs these days. It is common practice to not fight the thieves and let them get what they want while you call the police. She took the risk of taking matters into her own hands and got run over. Sometime's you try to do the right thing and it backfires. There just is not enough info to explain what exactly happened as to why she got runover. Was she chasing after them? Trying to block them from leaving? The truck came through the front of the shop? Nobody knows? Anyways, I do wish this woman a proper, healthy, solid recovery as she has some pretty serious injuries. No bicycle is worth more than your life. But next time do the smart, safe thing, and just call police. The Hero want's to run after the stolen goods and get them back. But then gets injured in the process and now i'm supposed to donate? I'm not sure I follow that. You decide to try and be a hero, you know what can happen. You are accountable. I know I sound like a total a*shole, but there two sides to every story. I'm Simply stating that this woman would not have gotten run over if she had not tried to stand in front a moving truck. Many employees ran out after the thieves.. Nobody else got run over. Don't be stupid. Use your common sense. Trucks are much heavier and stronger than you... And to stand in front and expect them not to run you over? Because thieves are so good at reasoning with people....
  • 8 0
You mean, who on Pinkbike would ever want an Epic?! It's made even more strange because the thieves were definitely SoCal bros, flatbill hats and all, so weird that they didn't go to an employee first and ask, "Yo, you got anything with a super-slack head tube, Renthal bars and at least 2.6 inch tires, brah? Oh, if there's a TLD version of it, even better, thanks brah! Wait, what? No, it's cool, I have my own set of Monster Energy stickers at home I can throw it on it!"

After reflecting on this, I feel my comment came across the wrong way. I really do care and wish this young lady a proper, healthy, and solid recovery. I was simply stating a different point of view. It's like people getting into road rage, and one steps out of their car and in front of the other persons car. Then the other person runs them over. Just because your standing in front of their car yelling STOP!!.. does not mean that they are going to listen and stop. Then they run you over. Your fault for standing in front. Other person is obviously at fault too and will be suffering legal consequences for running you over, but you are accountable as well for standing in front of a moving vehicle and trying to block them. Not legally accountable, but essentially that you, yourself, just put your life in harms way. Whether from adrenaline or just unaware of the danger. Either way. Don't stand in front of someone else's vehicle. We have no control over others actions. Most thieves will not reason and have no concerns other than getting away quickly. That's why trying to block thieves from leaving your parking lot, or grabbing onto their vehicle, or what have you, is your own choice as you just took matters into your own hands. I they run you over while you were attempting to stop them, placing your self in harms way, you are as much responsible for your injuries as they are. If that was the case, then that's a hard lesson for this lady to learn. If she was blindsided while chasing after someone else, then there was not much she could do, except possibly just staying inside and calling police. If the truck just came crashing into them out of nowhere, there's nothing she could have done aside from not showing up to work that day. If she was standing in front of the truck as if to block them from leaving, that is plain stupidity. As I said earlier, I know adrenaline will kick it and you might not make the most rational decisions. But either way its a tough lesson learned. Either don't chase after thieves, be more aware, or don't try and block a moving vehicle. Slimy people are out there. You can not control their decisions, you can only control yours.
  • 2 4
Then again, this is pinkbike. Where making statements about how these injuries could have partially been avoided go right over people heads. People refuse to think that their own actions do indeed have their own consequences. It was only the other persons fault... Well sometimes both people are at fault. A friend of mine lost his job due to intervening with a another co-worker who had an outburst and tried to beat up another co-worker. My friend intervened to break up the fight and lost his job too. Why? Because the he broke the companies policy by intervening. Even though he was just breaking up the fight. Some might say he was doing the right thing. But still has to deal with the consequences of his actions and went on to find a new job. No complaining. No bitching. No GoFundMe. Simply understood in hind-sight that what he had done might not have been the best choice as it cost him his job. But being accountable, went on to find a new job. Life goes on. Whether you feel you were doing the right thing or not. You are still accountable for your own actions. Trying to stop thieves or not. Oh well. Maybe she should have got run over twice. How bout that for pinkbike humour....

  • 2 1
@TheR: Totally agree. Giving chase is the right thing to do unless you've been trained or told otherwise by your employer. After that, its up to the thieves to NOT try to murder you over some commodity. They accepted the risk of getting caught when they stole property that wasn't theirs, so running over someone giving chase is straight up aggravated assault and attempted murder.
  • 2 0
@BsampSy: Maybe you misunderstood me, or I didn't make myself clear. I'm not advocating chasing thieves. I'm going to tell you what every retail employer tells their employees -- your life is not worth the trade-off. But the reality is that in the heat of the moment, rationality goes out the window for many people, and they're acting on adrenaline and instinct. You'd like to say, "Hey, my life isn't worth this thing," but that's not what happens.

I'd say you're right about the thieves, though. Once they've injured someone in the getaway, they're culpable for that, too, along with the theft.

I believe not standing in front of vehicles is something children learn from their mothers. So now she is in the right, but possibly maimed for life. Fine plan.
  • 1 0
I wouldn't say it's her fault, but this is why it is very common for companies to have strict policies that say "don't intervene in the event of a robbery". This will probably cost the employer more than the value of the bike, so from a financial perspective it's a loss, and her safety was at stake!

  • 3 6
@Farrier-Dave: Cost is not zero. We pay more in taxes than almost any country in the world for that benefit. honestly with the amount americans can save in taxes almost makes up for health insurance costs and they have better doctors since they all leave canada for a place they can actually make a living without paying half their incomes in tax. Really you paid for that health care and while your not hurt your paying for everyone elses too lol not saying I'm agains free health care but lets be real about how things work. pros and cons to both sides.
  • 6 1
@nismo325: Wtf? We definitely don't pay more taxes than any country in the world, and many of us don't even pay more than our American counterparts. It depends on your tax bracket. Lower to middle class Canadians tend to pay less taxes, whereas rich Americans pay less tax than rich Canadians. I've also been in the states for several months now and I thought things like food and produce would be cheaper. It's mostly not.

It really just sounds like you've been gargling on some right-wing talking points. And the idea that Canadian doctors don't make a living is laughable.
  • 1 4
@rezrov: Well your right poor Canadians don't pay much... the canadians with jobs pay it for them lol and yes doctors make a living duh but since your talking tax brackets tell me how much taxes a canadian pays who makes over 200k a year? or even 100k. while that sounds like a lot of money when you start paying a massive percentage of that in taxes people start moving south.
  • 6 0
 @nismo325: Here, from two neighbours:

Federal plus Ontario taxes, Canada, $200K: Take home=$126,200

Federal plus New York taxes, America, $200k: Take home=$127,800

Oh yeah they save soooo much on taxes. Notice it's basically the exact same figure, except Canadians get free healthcare coverage and 'Muricans get the right to shoot themselves in the foot.

That mentality is what thieves count on. They don't want to get caught, but they're also not stealing to hurt the bike shop. Just making a quick buck. If we rely on insurance instead of taking responsibility for our property, then everyone premiums go up and fewer people can afford that insurance. Sure, don't put yourself in harm's way, but don't just "let them take it".
  • 6 1
I bet they find them. I was involved in something like this. Theif took a bike out the emergency exit, I chased him on another bike into a trailer park where he tried to hide in a garage but I found him. I chased him back towards the store, a co worker had followed me on foot and was standing in the middle of the road in a face off with the theif headed towards him. The theif tried to go around him but was pushed off his bike into the grass. I immediately jumped on theif and injured his shoulder with a variation of the half Nelson wrestling move. I should have kept him down until officers arrived. I let him up and he ran and jumped in the back of his friends truck that was driving by. Never give a theif any leeway and treat them with brutality when legally possible.

It looks like Chino PD caught the 3 suspects from this robber.

***NEWS RELEASE***

Three Suspects Arrested for Incycle Robbery

The three suspects captured on video surveillance robbing the Inycle store (12345 Mountain Avenue), then running over a female employee, were taken into custody yesterday in the cities of Frazier Park and Taft.

After an extensive investigation including follow up on multiple leads, Detectives learned that the same suspects were involved in similar burglaries throughout Los Angeles and Orange Counties. This information subsequently led to the identification and arrest of Ronald Wolfe – age 20 of Frazier Park, Kyle Stewart – age 27 of Taft, and Nichole Stewart – age 23 of Taft. During the service of the search warrant in Taft, the 2011 GMC Sierra that was used in the commission of the crime was located and seized along with other evidence linking the suspects to the crime.

The robbery took place on February 12, 2019, at approximately 4:17 p.m. when two male suspects entered Incycle, took a bike valued at $10,000, then fled in a GMC Sierra truck driven by a female. A female employee attempted to stop the suspects and was run over, suffering critical injuries to her head and torso. Images and video of the suspects were captured on store and shopping center surveillance. The suspects were also seen at the Incycle in San Dimas earlier that day, possibly casing the location.

The female victim was hospitalized with significant injuries but has since been released.

All three suspects were booked at the West Valley Detention Center for robbery, conspiracy, and attempted murder.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Carrino at (909) 334-3005 or ccarrino@chinopd.org.

Can we burn all 3 of them at the stake? you know... an offering to the Lord of the Bike... Game of Thrones style. All the victims of cycle theft could gather to watch, maybe hold a raffle to win the chance to light the fire. Never underestimate the power of audience participation at a bonfire. Getting people to feel like they are playing a part in the sacrificial process of cycle thieves will give everyone a warm feeling on the inside as well as the out.
Anyway, I digress. Does anyone know what time the 24 hour garage opens? I've run out of papers & could really kill a Kit-Kat.

@neureye The NHS ain't free, it's "free at the point of use" you still pay via tax / national insurance contributions (if you're working). Also, it's not that great - the standard of private cover is as good or better. The poor care I received on the NHS after a minor motorcycle crash led to me needing a couple of op's and months of physio, when all that would have been needed would have been to stitch a ligament back together in my hand - the NHS missed it because they wouldn't do an MRI scan (presumably due to the cost) and after x-raying my hand they told me it was just a bit swollen and it would sort itself out, which it didn't and the ligament withered away. Fortunately I have private cover through work and after paying the £50 excess, I used it to get the reconstruction op, where they had to cut a tendon out of my arm to rebuild the ligament - I dread to think how long I would have waited to get the op on the NHS - if it is even available - and if it is I dare say it costs them a heck of a lot more than an MRI scan.

Sorry about the rant and losing perspective on the important point - I pray that Megan has a speedy recovery and that the criminals receive the swift justice that they deserve.

Problem neither of you are taking into consideration is many small shops hesitate to report a claim on one bike due to insurance companies raising rates cancelling. I worked in a small shop where we had a break in in the late 1990's. We ate the approximate $6k in charges to know threaten our coverage. Life or serious injury is not worth a $10k bike. That said, If I ever owned, ran or worked in a shop again, I would carry a taser at least to slow the pieces of trash down. F the losers in this article an glad they have been arrested.

Dont you have workers compensation insurance in the states?
  • 2 0
Yes, employers have worker's compensation and it includes medical benefits and additional benefits. Problem is this site always has to get political for some reason. It's even worse when those who are not even part of the US start trying to stir the political pot. I vote for keeping the political bs out of this bike site.

Worker's Comp specifically for California which would provide Megan medical and other benefits.

I've seen many bike shops keep all bikes locked to stop grab and go type of thefts. Also seems prudent to have a number of quality video camera's at the shop, and some employee training (to advise an employee that it is not worth risking their health/life over a bike that is covered under the shops insurance). She meant well, but it was the wrong decision. Hope the best for her in her recovery.

Hope a speedy recovery for Megan! You’re a real hero!

I dont get why everyone blames the store owner and not the @&$&&@$$ who ran her over. You all are commi socialist idiots.

People should have to beg online to be able to afford medical care, specially if it was done trying to protect the assets of the employer.

 Let's bring back public hangings!

 Just for bicycle thefts tho.

Really sad situation. Hope she gets well soon.

Remember LoJack. Gotta chip these things so this s*** stops happening.

Shoot the fucker in the head. The truck was a deadly weapon

Was thinking that, is Cali a gun state? Just out of interest, legally an insurance wise what would be better risking getting run over an the inevitable health care bills (insured or otherwise) or getting in another vehicle an ramming them??
  • 4 0
@nojzilla: Cali is one of the three least gun-friendly states.

Now this is news pinkbike! Awesome update. Hope she continues to heal up. Tough injuries.

There are so many people on PB I'm glad I never bump into on a bike ride. Thought people who rode bikes in general was a bit smarter than some of the people here on PB.
  • 1 0
Is this a white on white crime? Since there's not CA Death penalty, are the law gonna put these guilty people in line and run them over with their own truck?
  • 2 0
 Now that’s a woman!????
  • 3 1
...and they got the bike back!!!

Whats the punishment for stealing a bike vs running someone over?
  • 5 0
Stealing a bike worth $10,000 is grand theft in CA, and is punishable by up to a year in jail, plus compensation for the theft. It can be a misdemeanor or a felony.

Stealing a bike worth $10,000 and then running someone over is grand theft and, at least, aggravated battery, (both of which, in these circumstances, would definitely be prosecuted as a felony). In that case you're getting 3 years in jail + a $10,000 fine for the assault, a year for the theft, some punitive fines for the assault, and compensation for the theft. On top of that she'll be charged with reckless driving, leaving the scene, and whatever other enhancements could stick.
  • 4 0
Pretty sure running someone over with a truck would be considered assault with a deadly weapon+ hit and run.@jlobes:

 @Stevenwalton206: You are correct.

 cowards.

Maybe Specialized could cover Megan’s hospital’s check??
  • 1 0
No! The owner for not having a $10,000 bike secured and not having properly trained employee's. That girl didn't need to get hurt, employer should front the bill, his shop, his bike, his employee's.

Wow, this story actually made me feel sadness.
  • 1 0
Guts, and glad no one got fatally injured, at least from the shop....and the bike came back home!!

At least they caught them, best wishes healing up.

But did he get a better ID on the perps or plater number of the truck?

The red white and pink slip Blues. If you're dedicating yourself to your employer let me know how that works out for you when times get tough for them. You will be kicked to the curb like a piece of trash guaranteed. If you're working a dead-end job do not dedicate yourself to these douchebags because there will be another dead-end job just like it right around the corner for you. The only thing you get in today's world for hard work is a sore back and more hard work. F*** employers go out and do it on your own. Don't be a sheeple in the heard of Clueless individuals

 @oldtech: herd that!

@oldtech: sweet, you wanna provide starting funds, or are the paycheck-to-paycheck employees supposed to sell their least favorite vital organ to fund the startup(s)?
