Fort William World Cup Cancelled, Nove Mesto World Cup XC Postponed

Greg Minnaar will be dropping numbers on his plate after today s run. Sixth place for the legend.

The Fort William World Cup has been cancelled and the Nove Mesto World Cup XC has been postponed due to the spread of Coronavirus.

Great Britain entered a full lockdown period yesterday and British Cycling also announced that it had extended its suspension of cycling activities until June 30, leaving an inevitability that the World Cup would not run on its scheduled June 6/7 dates. Instead of looking to reschedule later in the year however, the organisers have asked the UCI to cancel the event. A statement from Fort William read: "We did investigate re-scheduling options with cycling’s governing body, the Union Cycliste Internationale and other partners but no alternative viable dates could be found." This means that we are now down to, at most, a 6 round series as Losinj also cancelled their event last week.
Revised 2020 World Cup Calendar
21/22 March: Lousa - Postponed, date tbc
02/03 May: Maribor - Postponed, date tbc
09/10 May: Losinj - Cancelled
06/07 June: Fort William - Cancelled
20/21 June: Vallnord
22/23 August: Mont-Sainte-Anne
12/13 September: Val di Sole
19/20 Septmeber: Les Gets

The Nove Mesto organisers announced on March 20 they would wait until April 20 before making a decision on whether to push ahead with the event, however it seems they have had to bring that forward as the postponement was announced by the UCI today instead. A new date for the race has not yet been confirmed. This is the first XC World Cup to be affected this year but it follows the postponement of the Olympics that was announced yesterday.

bigquotesDue to the current pneumonia epidemic (Covid-19) linked to the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) must announce that the fourth round of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz UCI Mountain Bike World Cup which was to take place in Nove Mesto na Morave, Czech Republic, on 22 and 24 May will not take place on the scheduled dates, and that the fifth stop in Fort William (Great Britain), scheduled for 6 and 7 June has been cancelled at the request of the organisers.

In light of the current situation, the UCI fully supports the fact that the running of the events would have potentially presented a health risk to riders, to everyone involved in the event and to fans, and could have contributed to the spread of Covid-19.

The new date of the Nove Mesto na Morave leg will be announced by the UCI, in consultation with the organising committee, on due course.

The UCI shares the disappointment of the mountain bike community after the decision made to cancel the Fort William event and would like to thank both organising committees for their cooperation in this difficult situation, as well as the riders, teams and all parties involved for their understanding.

Let's face it, the whole season is going to be cancelled, not much point in foing through all the logistics and organisation for a semi skimmed season

World Champs could be a real banger!!
  • 21 0
@DHhack: Yea. Would be a crazy event. A true "one off" race for the season.
  • 7 0
@DHhack: Yeah that'd be sick if that was the only UCI event this year, the hype/build up would be UNREAL.
  • 5 0
As long as they have Val di Sole, we can consider this season a success.
  • 6 0
They should have world's and another one off race to decide the overall. But on a track as long as the top of the world stage of the EWS in Whistler.

Remember to take the quarantine serious! The less we go outside the sooner we will be able to go outside!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the flatter the curve the longer the curve.
  • 17 12
 @chriskneeland: not quite
  • 9 7
 @flaflow: On what planet?
  • 5 0
@chriskneeland: unless you make it really really flat
  • 2 0
@chriskneeland: Well yes, but it still requires us to follow the plan. Else we are just drip feeding the virus hosts. And that will make it take longer
  • 15 1
@mtb-jon: Trust me, I am in no way suggesting we do not follow the plan. Just want people to understand, this will not be a short crisis.

DON'T YOU PEOPLE REALIZE THERE IS NO CURVE??

  • 7 2
@chriskneeland: it's not about eliminating the virus - we cant do that no matter what. Its about calming down an insane current emergency that our system cannot handle. The more we flatten the curve the more we can take care of sick people. And if we level off the numbers, business and events will open again!
  • 8 2
@jtorrento: No, if we open businesses and attend events there will be subsequent waves of outbreaks.
  • 5 0
@chriskneeland: exactly when you flatten the curve it actually elongates the time frame. What it is doing is making sure the hospitals aren't overwhelmed which would lead to exponentially more deaths. The quickest way to get rid of covid-19 would to have everyone in the world infected and the virus run its course. This would make the outbreak very short but immensely deadly, like tens of millions
  • 6 0
@chriskneeland: exactly - people need to prepare for the time this is going to take to resolve in reality.

If anybody thinks they will be flying to other countries for pleasure or sport, that international sports / events (or even national for that matter in larger countries) or the like will be happening at all this year I would bet they are mistaken.

This things going to last for months at its worst and nobody has an ‘exit strategy’ yet, in my head am resigned to a good year of restricted life in some significant way or another.

@justanotherusername: You are most likely right. Things will gradually ease up and I don't think they will stay the way they are now all year, but even as things ease up the last thing to come back will be large scale gatherings like sporting events, concerts, etc. Businesses may reopen and people may start to go back to work with added precautions, but I don't think we will be large scale events and crowds anytime soon.

If Fort Bill isn't on the schedule, it's not a true DH season.

Honestly it'd be fine if Ft. Bill stopped taking up space on the schedule in future.
  • 8 2
Might as well cancel the season, it’s going to be unfair for training purposes and even for the event gatherings. Difficult but it’s the way its going. .
  • 5 1
I don’t think it’s unfair when it’s the same thing for everyone. Let’s say we have a few races at the end of the season, we may see the fastest times ever since the racers have more time to prepare. But that is just speculation now...

@C0yotekid: even in quaratine cities, they are allowing exercise such as running, cycling, walking etc.
  • 1 4
@C0yotekid: big man with the keyboard courage name calling....very mature. Well, I actually live in a city with the rules quoted above, Denver. Same with all of California, Dallas, and NY. So maybe not in your area/country, but, yes....we CAN get out and exercise. So have fun with your burner/troll account and coward shit talking from behind a screen in BC (assuming that is where you are).
  • 3 1
 @bman33: not in Spain
  • 3 0
@C0yotekid: Not much apparently since you were unaware of things globally. Italy has been on lock down for a while and they still had cases sky rocketing and are still suffering massive casualties. Growing infections here ins the US, but we will end up just fine without as high as a percent loss as other countries fortunately. That said, I wasn't the one who came onto a comment sections and started name calling like a kid. Down vote my all you want, but I wasn't talking shit from a 1000 miles away, just pointing out differences.

@bernat Spain has folks being left for dead in nursing homes along with dead bodies form the last BBC article i read earlier today. How is that 100% lock down working for them? I feel sorry for them.

@bman33: c’on don’t think you are better then the rest ,cause maybe (and I hope not)in 2 weeks you might talk different,Europe and others continents are not people that can’t read or write or understand what this is ,and we do not need to be insured to get treated, take care

@oneheckler: never said or inferred I was better than anyone, and my original didn't talk shit. Coyotekid mentioned Western Canada so I'm assuming he has a burner account judging by his previous troll posts and lack of anything on the account. Plus, his English seems pretty comprehensive. Hope all stay well and rubber side down

 Just cancel it all jeez

They should (if feasible) have the World Champs. One race. Balls to the wall and let it all hang out!!!
  • 6 0
Bright side is, once racing returns, these will be some of the greatest races of all time....imagine this world championships!! going to be ALL TIME!!!
  • 4 0
Not surprising really, but needs must. I reckon the rest of the season is gonna get cancelled too - not much of a World Cup if it's over 3 rounds!
  • 4 0
 world champs will be EVERYTHING

 And geo-restricted on redbull, youtube.

So basically everything is being canceled until this thing blows over. Stay healthy out there.
