Jackson Goldstone Earns Red Bull Helmet

Canadian junior downhill racer Jackson Goldstone has earned himself a Red Bull sponsorship and helmet after a stellar breakout first year in the World Cup series.

Goldstone ended 2021 as World Cup overall champion, Junior World Champion and winner of three World Cups in his first year as a junior. He is also a former Whip-Off World Champion and has starred in a number of viral mountain bike videos since he was still riding a balance bike.

Goldstone announced the news on Instagram, saying he thought he was showing up to do a Fox photoshoot with Finn Iles, but then the Canadian Red Bull athlete presented him with his own Red Bull lid instead.

 HUGE sign of respect and recognition for the rider, I mean who doesn't understand how big getting picked by RedBull is for this type of athlete? Also, who ever said BOTH sides don't get something out of business deals? That is actually the way this works...every product endorsement out there is based on both parties making money.

 i have a relative who was a professional kayaker, he got supported by Redbull a couple of times, they would pay him and allow him to wear Redbull clothing, use stickers and such, but they put a lot of emphasis on not wearing a RedBull helmet unless he is authorized by Redbull, he never was.

According to him wearing a Redbull helmet is the most prestigious thing an "Extreme" Sport Athlete can wear.

 @atomlab31 I think you have it the wrong way around. Redbull offers a sponsorship deal, Goldstone accepts. They also pay him to endorse the brand. Therefore he has earned the position, not the other way around.

 Totally agree. red bull has created this weird select club and formal (heavily publicized) award ceremony for what amounts to a sponsorship. I really hope the athletes get their $$ out of the deal (but will never know as mtb is notoriously secretive about contracts). It makes red bull seem like this crazy thing to strive for, but is starting to seem a bit, how do you say, cult-ish?

 @gmcgurk: You are not the only one, especially because it has been stated before (also by @Narro2 above) that helmet comes with quite some contractual obligations, like always wearing it... So what if somebody does not want it, like he might have some beef with the company or finds the contract restrictive or (hypothetically) already has a better deal offered and is presented a RB helmet and he turns it down? I understand almost everyone wants it and probably gets a sweet deal out of it, but for real, do they get the helmet first and then they talk contract or is everything staged and contract signed in advance? Or are they vaguely asked in advance if they would be interested and then RB decides and they hope the person hasnt changed their mind?

it goes down to personality and case by case, i am sure Gwin or Gee didnt make a huge deal, when compared to Pastrana or Daniel Ricciardo.

 @ldhbaker: Agree. thinking about it that context, I wonder if these deals that include the "authorization" to use their helmet graphics are industry competitive, considering one of the few peeks we've had into their athlete compensation, with taking care of Rampage riders, and how lackluster that was.

Might be that they've intentionally built up the prestige of "getting to wear our helmet" so that the athlete cares more about that than a fair contract.

edit: thinking about it more, anybody getting a red bull helmet should be getting more from their other sponsors, because you're more marketable if you have that "prestige" but that money isn't coming out of Red Bull's pocket.

 For starters, if you wanted a helmet with red bull on it you could just pay someone to paint one for you. It’s not like a pink diamond or a two headed snake.
So rafters, how much do riders actually get paid by red bull to wear a red bull helmet? It’s interesting that there is a ton of hype and comments about riders making a stack out of it… but there are never any actual numbers. It makes me think it’s not that much. If it was really a big pay day surely someone would eventually let the cat out of the bag. Keeping it secret makes me sceptical. Everyone thinks I’m getting PAID… but in actual fact it’s just $1200 and two crates of red bull for the year. A bit embarrassing considering the attention it brings - better keep the details on the D.L.

 Well deserved by this young rider, but I'm confused how this works. How is he 'surprised' to be receiving the helmet? Wouldn't he (or his agent) have been in negotiations with RedBull, and therefore knew it was coming? It's weird how redbull represents their sponsorship as some secretive selection process and then they bestow the athlete with their wings at some unexpected moment. I guess that's part of their schtick?

Wild guess - he mentions his dad being involved; probably spends a significant amount of time on the deals side of Jackson's career and this was one avenue that worked out successfully, ergo: the kid is surprised!

 Red Bull identify athletes they want to target, and nothing is finalised until they officially receive their helmets, almost always presented by a current Red Bull athlete. Its almost like the athletes are kept in the dark completely with it, only the Red Bull HQ, the RB regional rep and the athletes manager (if they have one) are aware. I jave a strong suspicion that if the athlete has a manager, they are made to sign an NDA. I will ask a mate who paints RB athlete helmets here in Oz and ask him how it works.

 @mi-bike: NDA for until the athlete is presented with their helmet, I should have clarified that. Browny posts up videos of his works in progress for the helmets, so its no big secret he paints RB helmets, he just cant say who it is going to until its presented.

Same thing for Martin Maes a few years back. He said it was pretty unexpected, he had been talking with them for a bit but the contract just showed up randomly without any notice.

 How does that work with the actual sponsorship? Was he already signed with Red Bull, and this was just the surprise helmet unveiling? I can't imagine this is how they offered him the deal.

 Depends on the sport- since he is a junior / am. its most likely just flow / prodeal for branded product. Some sports allow money for race support - thats it. If you win a certain amount of cash in some sports you are considered professional this also applies to be NCAA eligible. Not sure about the UCI though. He also might have a agent that is actively pursuing sponsors for him - even if Jackson can’t monetarily benefit from it - the agent will form a trust or just do work for future earnings - lots of hockey kids have agents at 13 based on potential. Red Bull athletes have social media / contest obligations and other incentives they need to meet . Red Bull does have training and sports med / physio centers for there athletes in California - they might pay for a similar service in BC if needed/ negotiated. Hopefully his parents have some guidance for him - it can be alot of pressure and you can’t always rely on the sport’s governing body / league/ race organization to be the guiding light

As this signifies the signing of a contract to represent the brand I've always wondered if riders sign the deal first or if this is declaration of a contract being offered by the sponsor? Surely if they are riding for them and receiving something from them that had to be worked out prior...

 @BCpov: Redbull sponsors atlethes for exposure, meaning that they have to release edit after edit plus videos of your latest injury recovery (see gee for example). I bet that Minnaar is not interested in doing that, and also that his compensation from other sponsors is such that he has no need to be doing that.

 Most of them know they sponsorship is happening, most contracts are signed but they have no idea of when it takes effect. Listen to the Gypsy Tales with remy Morton and he talks about the process of the sponsorship.

 I know a few RedBull athletes in a different sport. In general, RedBull will court many young up-and-coming athletes. Give them free product (cans of RedBull!), invite them to VIP events, maybe even throw a little money their way if there is a special project they where they can get a RedBull can into a magazine photo or video.
Then, over a period of time, they get to know them, see how they are progressing, if they are the right fit for the brand. Occasionally they make someone a full RedBull athlete by presenting the helmet... yes it's a surprise, but the athlete will have had a relationship with RedBull for months if not years by that point. It's not entirely out the blue, but they never know if it will actually happen or not.

 @src248: I can't speak for Greg since, you know, the only thing we have in common is the fact we're almost the same age, but I think that a big part of him not needing a big energy drink sponsorship is that he was a well established (and probably well payed) professional long before Red Bull was THE thing in DH racing.
Probably the next gen of riders simply couldn't afford to skip a red bull's offer since money wasn't just there anymore to support them

 Greg has had that Clif bar helmet for a long time. He has spoken about keeping sponsors for a long time and them treating him well. While it isn't a drink I guess clif and RB are kind of competing products, so it may be an either/or situation.
FWIW, I have on multiple occasions wanted some sort of outdoor energy snack, and have selected a clif bar because I recognise the brand from Greg - otherwise I might not have heard of it. On the other hand, I have never exchanged money for a can of Redbull when a choice has been presented to me.

 @src248: I don't think it has anything to do with rb being "unhealthy". Greg simply earns his money elsewhere and pretty much races bikes for fun. No need for him to chase the type of sponsors who would require a certain content output in return. He's not exactly known for churning out edits on a regular basis and I doubt he'd want to change that.

 How exactly can it be a surprise though? It's not like he didn't agree with the contract beforehand right? Let's say RedBull didn't ask him first, what if he didn't want the helmet? Do they just not post the video and pretend it never happened? What about with Emil Johansson, he was given his RedBull helmet at the bottom of his joyride run (don't remember what year) if he didn't accept it people still saw it happen they can't just pretend it never happened. (I know the chances of them not accepting are pretty low but it's possible)

I wonder how close Jackson, Jordon Williams etc can get to the top boys over the next few years. They are only 5% off just now as youngsters which is crazy, it is hard mentally when you go up from winning in juniors to around 20th, but I am pretty sure Jackson is gonna be right up there.

It's going to be really interesting to see what happens this year, so exciting that there are youngsters coming through now that have the potential to challenge the top boys.
1 mistake though can now cost him qualifying, the times are so tight, that's a new pressure to deal with for Jackson but he seems to have the mental capacity to deal with that. It's probably what makes him so exciting.

We all know their athlete care/support is top-notch, but their monetary compensation is right up there as far as sponsors. At least that is what I've heard from the mutual friends of a few local Redbull athletes we have had here (Semenuk, Smith, Messerre, and obviously these two in the article).
