Pole Updates the Stamina Range and Introduces New Gold Colour Option - Pond Beaver 2021

Apr 21, 2021 at 5:57
by James Smurthwaite

The past three years have been tough ones for Pole. It's something they readily admit as they've found themselves buffeted between shelved carbon projects, adopting totally new CNC manufacturing techniques, very public frame failures and forums awash with customer service woes.

Following this rough period of time, Pole have spent the past few months cleaning house and are now ready to launch what they are calling Pole 2.0. Internally, Leo Kokkonen is back in the leading role of the company and they have also added a marketing manager based remotely in the UK, a supply chain manager, a brand manager and they have implemented new protocols in both customer service response and customer aftercare. Pole has also doubled the size of its production facilities and has increased the size of its production and assembly team. As a result, Pole claims that its CNC frame production is running better and the quality of customer service has been improved.

Stamina Updates

But there has been more than just behind-the-scenes changes at Pole too and they have today announced a number of updates to their Stamina platform.

The first port of call was to reduce customers' concerns about failing frames. This started with a new swingarm design, first released in January 2020, called the Dog Bone with a stronger chainstay to seat stay support.

Pole Stamina 140
Pole have moved from the old Shark Fin design (left) to the new Dog Leg (right) that they claim is "nearly impossible to fail". It also comes with an integrated bash guard, STFU Bike and UDH.

Other improvements to increase the reliability of the frame include, "increasing frame wall thickness, increasing the bonding surface for each frame half, creating keyed headset inserts, and adding reinforcement walls to the top tube to prevent bike stand clamp crush damage." Pole is reinforcing this by upping its testing program and the Stamina 180 has been awarded EFBE's Gravity Cat-5 certification that goes and beyond the established national and international standards and reflects the specific challenges faced by modern bikes.

New Colour options

The other big change for the Pole Stamina is that you can now get it in different colours. Apparently, not every customer wanted a raw finish on their Pole and those that did weren't too happy about the patina that formed on the metal after a period of time.

To combat this, Pole now use electrophoretic lacquering to offer a clear coat of protection and open up a selection of colour options. Electrophoretic lacquering is mostly used in industries where products have to resist mechanical strain or environmental impacts like salt, and it's also used widely in the jewelry industry. It's different from anodising as it is completely clear and also offers a harder surface. Pole describe the process in-depth, here.

Pole will begin by offering a raw finish or True Gold and Storm Grey colours, however the technique could be used for a wider pallette in future.

All Stamina frames ordered in April and going forward will have the new clear coat electrophoretic lacquer applied as a standard procedure. That will give the frame a raw look but a coloured version can also be ordered, starting with two options, True Gold and Storm Grey, for €250 for a single colored frame or €100 for shock yokes and links.

The rest of the bike, including geometry and kinematics will remain the same.

Stamina 140 Framesets and Complete Build

The Stamina 140 will be available in two frameset options and one complete Stock Custom build. The framesets will come with either a RS Super Deluxe Ultimate Air shock or the new Cane Creek Kitsuma Air shock, with prices from €4,850. The Stock Custom build will get a 160mm RS Zeb Select, a RS Super Deluxe Ultimate Air shock, SRAM GX Eagle and a DT Swiss EX1501 wheelset.

Stamina 160 Remastered - Raw Clear

Stamina 160 Frameset and Complete Build

The Stamina 160 will be available with two shock options as framesets and also a Stock Custom build. The framesets will come with either a RS Super Deluxe Ultimate Air or RS Super Deluxe Coil R. The Stock Custom build will come with 180mm RS Zeb Select forks, either a RS Super Deluxe Air or Coil shock, SRAM GX Eagle and DT Swiss EX 1501 wheels.

Stamina 180 Remastered - Raw Clear

Stamina 180 Frameset and Complete Build

The Stamina 180 will also be available as a frameset and a Stock Custom build. Both will feature a Cane Creek Kitsuma Air shock, and the Stock Custom build specced with a 180mm RS Zeb Ultimate, SRAM GX Eagle and LTD Mavic Deemax Pro Sam Hill wheels.

The crossover between people who think a gold bike looks good, people who can afford said bike, and people who have the desire and ability to properly ride a 180mm travel superenduro bike has got to be about 2 to 3 people max, right.

That describes me since I'm a Social Justice Beast Mode Battle Rapper who loves gold, am a successful social media influencer who can ride the steeps(both unlike Waki), and love long travel bikes. All it needs is a motor and I'll buy it.

 >desire and ability to properly ride a 180mm travel superenduro bike

The big thing that doesn't get talked about is that the longer/slacker bikes with more travel are generally safer for your average rider to be able to access more advanced riding. While not being a substitute for a base set of skills, they can make the difference between going OTB and riding it out, which means quite a bit considering that injuries, especially concussions, are no joke.

@TwoHumanPower: I think it is a double edged sword. Because of it's high limits, a GTR will be much more forgiving of a poor driver than a 370z. BUT, when said shitty driver finds the limit of the GTR they are going much, much faster. I think it's the same with bikes. With this new crop of slack missiles we are gonna have a lot of Friday Fails vids with noobs ripping through a rock garden at 30mph and then crashing because they have no idea what to do with the speed.

@4thflowkage: a GTR is much less forgiving then the 370z. Not that I own either but I have driven some fast cars and more power does not make them easier or safer to drive. So many people that buy really fast sports cars for the first time wreck them quickly.

Crazy situation, bought the frame from a guy in the states, and he never cashed the cheque. Got a message from his mom a month or so after saying she ripped up the cheque as she feared it was drug money (apparently he had been incarcerated for selling drugs shortly after shipping the frame)

@wesleyfleatus: My Pole Evolink 140 has been amazing, and through some pretty damn tough riding for a 140mm bike. Has taken some big hits and rides like new. But that's a "normal" tube construction bike, not this strange bonded stuff, whose entire reason is to be stronger, but that appears to be it's main image challenge.

If I were Polë, I would stick to refining the Evolink. It rides amazing, had HUGE interest about 3-4 years ago, and just needs to be prettied up a bit. No idea why Pole pushes so hard on the bonded frame construction...
  • 3 1
@lkubica: ...and become the unholy trinity of making ugly bikes?
  • 13 1
@bishopsmike: Evolink is made for Pole not by Pole. That is the issue with their CNC stuff. I wish them all the best really. I am capable of seeing through horrific PR and appreciate the spirit. As a non client I can’t say how their CS works. I would keep one if someone gave it to me. Wouldn’t say it about 99% of bikes. I’d cash most of them right away, all the Treks, Giants, Scotts, GTs, Niners, Santas and what not. Nothing wrong with them, it’s not a diss - I just don’t feel for any of these. But as a still young manufacturer with no experience of working in other brands, seeing how the full process looks like, what are the common errors they have lots of trial and error to do, no way around it.
  • 2 0
@justwaki: Good point. Either way, I would have recommended (and still recommend) to stick with what was working, and make baby steps. Also kind of harder for them now, since they were 5-6 years ahead of the curve on the geometry game, and now everyone else has caught up - so now they've got less to promote themselves with. For example, the Banshee Titan seems to be about the same thing, but better looking and less expensive.

Either way, really love my Evolink 140 and nothing really on the market in last 5 years that makes me want to change up, which makes it seem like a great value in my book.
  • 9 1
@bishopsmike: That’s the thing I value in Pole. If they make it with their CNC and PR... they have something really different to offer. All those artisan agro HTs will lose some business due to bikes like Nukeproof or even this Canyon that Mike just rode. Because all they had was the geo. It’s like, even if Sick Bicycles made it, even if they got clean, they’d still be stars of only one album. World caught up

But I hadn't heard that they had any sort of reputation for broken frames. I really like how out of the box they are and I'd trust that they've improved weaknesses. Which is to be expected for a young brand like you said. I've always thought they looked great too. Maybe one day!

"As a result, Pole claims that its CNC frame production is running better and the quality of customer service has been improved."

Evig eies kun et dårlig rykte. That is a norwegian saying and it basically means: the only thing a man owns forever is his reputation. What Pole claims is basically worthless and comical at this point. Maybe they turned it around, time will tell I guess. In the mean time, all that glitters isn't gold.

  • 3 5
@Maestroman87: is their rep really that bad? I'd only heard about a few incidents, I never knew this was a common consensus. You'd have to assume they've fixed weak areas. It's kind of to be expected with a smaller new brand. Or is the issue that they ditch customers once there's an issue? I've always thought they seemed pretty cool.
  • 6 0
 @DylanH93:

The rep comes from the CEOs response to the linkage breaking in the huck to flat test. While that response was weird to say the least, the reliability seems to be on par with what other brands, going by what you see on forums and social media. But, with this being the internet, people are going to take every opportunity to shit on Pole.

Rocky Mountain broke in another PB test but they go largely unnoticed.

The new design with reinforced structures should make it even stronger, which is reflected in the Cat 5 testing.
  • 9 0
I think Leo Kokkonen should be henceforth known as Big Daddy High-Rollin’ Gold.

In all seriousness, I kind of like it. It works for me, somehow. That storm gray in the bottom bracket photo would be more my thing, but the gold works. I think it’s a nice looking bike. Wouldn’t buy one, though, to be clear. I’m not looking for that kind of attention when I ride.
  • 5 0
I love the gold one too. It's probably more than I'm interested in spending for a frame, but I think its damn cool. Kind of interesting to see how polarizing the gold is in these comments though. I own a high polished (shiny silver) Commencal and it gets a lot of love and very little hate, which seems to be the POLEar opposite of this.

Sorry for that last line...I'm in the my late 30s and the dad jokes just flow like the salmon of Capistrano.

 Note to further Pole buyers!!!
Try contacting Customer Support before purchase, I can bet you that you wont have a respond in 48h or at all.
Please don't even think about this brand, as an Evolink 156 owner I'm warning you to go away and leave it with his own fate.
As people are saying:
"You don't build a new brothel with old whores"
This 2.0 shits can fool someone in '90 , in modern times you only got one chance to do things right and Pole don't do many things right, firstly they tread Customers as peasons silencing them in their Facebook page and ignoring questins about warranty and shipping claims.
Be warrned POLE is a scam, even when you get your frame/bike you are left on your own fate from there you are not getting any responce and reactions on warranty claims

The gold seems like an odd move for a company trying really hard to be a responsible grown up, but good luck to them - they are learning from their mistakes.

This is gonna look sick on the Kuat Rack attached to my Model X. Can’t wait to head to Winter Park, case everything on Rainmaker, and then tell the FRMB Facebook page how awesome my new ride is.

I wouldn’t be able to take a rider seriously if he/she is riding a gold bike.

Add some intricate Dia de Los Muertos engraving and it'd make for a mighty fine cartel bike.
  • 1 0
Is it just me, or do the fork legs look slacker than the head angle? The fork crown looks like it is really low or even negative offset, with some angle between the steerer and upper legs.

This is something that I think might become popular. Rearward axle path and greater trail with more travel use.
  • 1 0
I see what you're saying, on the first photo with that weird fork. What would be the advantage of a "negative offset" tho? Slacker bike without getting too long and feeling like a bus?
  • 4 4
I feel like you shouldn’t really ride this unless you are pretty much an EWS or similar season winner, at very least a race winner.

40 something year old weekend warrior bumbling down the trails, meh, not sure that works for me.....

@RonSauce: Ron sweetie, isn’t it a little nasty of you to call me a ‘weiner’?

Do you have weiner on the brain maybe? Or could it be you fantasise about bumbling through the woods on a gold coloured bike?

Each to their own I suppose hun. X

You have a gold leaf plated bike? Super blingy Ron, well done.

EFBE Cat.5 (Gravity spec) testing is legit. You'd have to do very nasty things to the frame to break it. I wish more manufacturers would do this. As far as I know there's only 2 non-DH bikes currently available which are tested to EFBE's gravity standards - those are the Pole Stamina and the YT Capra.
  • 16 1
Plenty of broken Capras out there
  • 4 0
Kavenz vhp16 is DH certified, too.
  • 18 2
When someone leaves 17 similar posts about testing and EFBE's gravity standards you can be sure something is fishy here..

Pole started here with excellent image and reputation and within a year they ruined everything. Sometimes I've asked myself how the f@€% can someone mske so so many mistakes one after another!?
  • 5 0
@DHhack: broken capra's are probably more due to quality fluctuations. Way harder to guarantee quality levels with carbon products
  • 3 1
@SleepingAwake: from what I’ve seen in Canyons cut outs few years ago the method is simple: calculate necessary amount of prepreg and it’s layup, put it in, take a big brush, dip it in a can of resin, smear it all over the first layers, then add 50% more prepreg just to compensate. Jokes aside Raoul Luescher did a review on a Canyon road bike and it wasn’t that bad. I wonder if Hambini (aged 5) had one in his workshop
  • 3 5
@pakleni: Calm down mate. Your assumptions are wrong. I never disputed that this wasn't the real issue with Pole. Their issue is horrible customer service and having a CEO that likes to jump on twitter and personally insult customers. I very much dislike them as a company. All I'm saying is that more companies should test to EFBE standards.
Also, what do you even mean by "17 comments"? I've left exactly three comments, saying more or less the same.
  • 1 1
@justwaki: He did. I didn't go well. The whole kindergarten laughed
  • 1 0
 @SleepingAwake:
I thought it was Alu Capras that had the majority of issues?
The drain hole on the underside of the chainstay being a weak point?
  • 1 0
@SleepingAwake: I don’t really believe that at all. QC the fabric, QC the cuts quality, QC the resin, check molds on a schedule, QC the layup sequence, QC the temp gauges and timers, random X-ray testing, random destructive testing. It’s all basic stuff. That’s why they got the certificate in only carbon.
  • 2 1
@DHhack: Well believe me or not, but production of carbon bikes require way more manual labor and many of the tasks are not easy and need skilled and trained workers. You will always have bigger variations in quality with composite parts. That's why NASA requires a designed safety factor of 1.25 to 1.4 for metalic flight hardware, but 2.0 for composite parts. And bikes are definitely not made anywhere close to aerospace standards...

I have first hand seen someone locally who's pole bike headtube split along with the riders face when they crashed on relatively mellow trail system. Unsafe and ugly bike.
  • 1 0
It's case of "a bike which speak way too much about your personality" Definitely not for everybody but it's very likely that it will compose nice with huge oversize gold chain on your neck.

Check out the crown on the intend. WTF is going on lol.
  • 1 0
The offset at the axle is way bigger.
  • 1 0
 Reverse offset? Why
  • 3 0
Because a raw CNCed frame just doesn't stand out enough!

Gold comes from the type of chem conversion coating and doesn't add cost. It's incredibly common on aluminum parts in other industries.
  • 2 0
They weren't coating before, hence the patina, so any coating is an added cost.

Doesn't sound like a durable finish. Why not not do a titanium nitride coating like you see on drill bits? It's actually a process that increases strength.
