Slack Randoms: Concept Bikes, Bobsleigh Tracks and Centaurs

by James Smurthwaite
We use Slack as our workplace communication tool at Pinkbike and we have a #randoms channel which we use to share an assortment of videos and stories from all corners of the cycling world and beyond... We thought a couple of the moments from the past week were too good not to share with a wider audience, so here are some of the highlights.

Wild Concept Bikes

photo

We've been spending a lot of time thinking about high pivot bikes this week and we're clearly not the only ones as Matus Prochaczka, CEO of Product and Concept Design studio Wekoworks, sent us through these wild renders of some concept bikes he has designed. These don't have anything to do with Pivot or Canyon and are instead Matus' attempt at looking into what 3-D printed carbon and metal could mean for the future of bike design. He believes that new manufacturing techniques will allow bikes to move away from the traditional two triangle design and instead into something totally different, like these monocoque bikes.

photo

Matus said, "We are in the age of metal 3D printing, plastic 3D printing, even carbon 3D printing. There can be made any structure inside, that carry stress forces. From my point of view, a single monolithic frame shall be nothing unrealizable these days. I contacted Pinion to send me a real model of their shifting device and I placed it into my frame. The rest is completely modelled, textured and rendered by me."

The bikes are 160mm enduro bikes with high single-pivot suspension and gearbox-driven transmission. Matus hasn't worked out exact kinematics for the system but has been inspired by other long-travel bikes for the suspension. Unlike most designs however, his shock sits on top of the top tube and he said a nice feature of this design was that you'd be able to see the suspension working underneath you during a ride. Will these ever see a physical form? Well, like most concept cars, bikes or anything, they very likely won't. Matus instead said he wanted them to be eye-catching and an attempt to show the mtb community what a new approach to manufacturing could bring. However, if someone does want to collaborate with him, he's up for the challenge.

Antoni Villoni Rides a Bobsleigh Track

Antoni Villoni is kicking off 2021 with some unusual lines that have included riding up a bridge, along super-exposed paths and, the pick of the bunch so far, on this disused bobsled track. An alternate view is below.

More Foaly Hucks

If you thought last week's hucking horse was impressive, wait until you see what they did back in the 1920s. In this admittedly cruel clip, you can see horses take on Rampage size hucks on Steel Pier. The Daily Mail said, "Horse diving became one of the most popular attractions in Atlantic City in the 1920s, with the death-defying stunts drawing huge, adoring crowds to the famous Steel Pier. The act involved a woman, clad in a swimming costume, jumping her horse off a platform which could be as tall as 60 foot - almost twice the height of the tallest Olympic diving board - into the water below"

Thanks to kpickrell for the subheading pun.

Centaur of Attention

Speaking of horses...

This Instagram clip sent me down a YouTube hole that ended up with me watching this French music video. That was enough internet for one day.

New Zealand Tourism

Specialized sponsors a Spanish Soccer Team

Spanish Segunda Division football team, RCD Mallorca, has claimed the title of the first football club worldwide to announce a partnership with a leading bike manufacturer following an agreement with Specialized. The partnership will run for the next two years and will see the company feature on the back of the first-team's shorts, in addition to advertising at our stadium and training ground.

Mallorca is seen as a must-visit destination for road cyclists and the team has also changed its stadium's name to 'The Visit Mallorca Estadi' in an effort to encourage tourism when travel is possible again. RCD Mallorca said, "Our innovation to align ourselves with one of the leading bike manufacturers not only helps us promote the island as a must-visit location for cyclists, but represents a landmark step for the relation of two sports which can learn so much from one another."

Kaz's Friday Evenings

Kaz said this popped up on his YouTube recommendations this week, we don't know what prompted the algorithm to show it to him and we don't want to know either!

@pinkbike - any chance for a bike check on the Horse Bike?

Asking for a friend.

 1. Keep the frames, I just want the mags. 2. That is a virile man to keep that camera upright on his business all the way down a bobsled run. Or he just REALLY likes bobsled runs.

exactly my thoughts on the matter

yep, too much risk of trapping your wang

People who think 3D printing will revolutionize everything simply do not understand how existing things are made
  • 18 19
I can argue this for sure. The ablity to design and build parts is far easier without the need of many tools and processes. Downloading Solidworks and finding a pringter can allow for some pretty compex design. Sure you may need to machine parts after printing which will cause issues. I still feel like you will be able to print a frame and get the local bike shop to face and ream the frame and away you go. No welding jig or mitering needed. I am optimistic about addative manufacturing and for sure am a fanboy of the tech.
  • 22 0
@lance-h: @lance-h I think that people mostly don't understand when 3D printing is a benefit and when it is just for show. (3D printed headset spacers, ugh) I love the way that the Atherton brand has been able to quickly iterate and in 1 season Gee was on like his 5th revision. There aren't many options for changing the geometry and kinematics of a bike frame with such ease. That would be so much more difficult in Carbon and even CNC machining aluminum would take a lot of time and resources.

Imagine getting a scrotum pinch in the shock
  • 15 0
3D Printing has been normal in prototyping for years and years now, so ignore the hype on that.

3D Printing for manufacturing has been developing more slowly but yes, it does allow new shapes to be put into production that just can't be made any other way.

But 3D Printing for certain shapes is stupid, very slow, energy intensive and produces lower quality parts - like tubes, for example.

@Mikevdv nails it.
  • 11 1
This! As someone with quite a lot of experience with FDM and SLA, I can't stress enough how often I have to explain to people, that 3D printing is only really valuable to prototyping products, doing extremely low series production where no other production method is viable, doing very custom production or dicking around at home.
  • 9 1
@Curse-of-the-foot-long-sub: "a" scrotum? How many have you got?
  • 15 0
@stumpymidget: I have four. Is that not normal? My mother said I was beautiful....
  • 3 0
@handynzl: a genetelia only a mother could love
  • 2 1
@Curse-of-the-foot-long-sub: Yer mum certainly loved em. Ha got eeeem!
(Sorry this just had way to much "yer mum" joke potential)
  • 3 0
If 3d printing means bikes that look like Redalp bikes with too much make up on, then i say no thnx
  • 1 0
@Curse-of-the-foot-long-sub: Scrotum is nothing. It's the full grape crush that worries me.
  • 2 0
 @A1990ToyotaHilux:
A good design brain trumps 3D printing every time. The most elegant solution deigned for manufacture will always be cheaper than 3D printing complex shapes.

The only thing that will change this is when material costs become way more dominant in total cost of a part compared to processing costs. And I suppose this could well happen...
  • 1 0
 @A1990ToyotaHilux:
Take a look at the company Titomic, they can print an entire bike frame in 20 minutes
  • 1 0
@lance-h: Absolutely not cost effective! The amount of energy you have to pump into that, makes it not viable in most products.

After watching 40 minutes of Aerobics....did anyone else suddenly realize that they weren't wearing pants? I mean, I thought I was when it started......

the moment at 11:55 where it smash cuts back to the announcer and he hasn't gotten the cue yet is one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time
  • 1 0
While watching it, I kept thinking of how niché that sport is. But then, average person would rather watch Aerobics or MTB competition video?
  • 4 0
@steezysam: I'm impressed you got to 11 minutes.
  • 2 0
@radrider: Oh I skipped to a random spot about 60 seconds before that moment, as luck would have it

Also, @mikelevy nailed this days ago with his Kenny Powers comment

  • 2 0
@steezysam: You f78king rule for watching it that far, AND for sharing the best part with the rest of us so we could skip forward!
  • 2 0
@steezysam: Funny enough, the announcer is Chris Marlow the regular play-by-play guy for the local Denver Nuggets broadcasts. Unfortunately this kind of stuff isn't too strange to anyone that's a Nugs fan.

Somebody, somewhere, is wondering why their 1980's aerobics video suddenly got so many hits.

" He believes that new manufacturing techniques will allow bikes to move away from the traditional two triangle design..."

...proceeds to design a bike with a dozen triangles. There's a reason for the triangle design:

They have a fight, Triangle wins
Triangle Man
  • 1 0
 But have you tried "line?"
  • 2 0
@A-HIGHLY-EDUCATED-PROFESSIONAL: Triangle has been proven to be up to 3x better than line. It's a fact - look it up!

 ...and single pivots
  • 8 0
 @SwampThAAng: ...but...mag wheels!

(Like my bmx bike in the ‘80s)
  • 8 1
 @ReformedRoadie: I want those wheels
  • 4 0
 I liked the fox-manitou collab
  • 2 1
@ReformedRoadie: I'll take a set of those wheels like right now. (replacing yet another broken spoke as I type this)
  • 7 0
At least it comes with white logo'd maxxis
  • 2 0
@CarbonShmarbon: i knew you would dig those wheels.
  • 3 3
@SwampThAAng: Motos have had single pivot suspension for 100+ years, so you better get used to them on your bike. The simplest way to skin the cat is generally the one that works the best. I think some dude from Occam said something like that once...
  • 4 0
@CarbonShmarbon: those Spenglenve wheels would be so stiff they would shake your fillings loose (lol)! The spoked wheel is surely superior - and as long as you use good spokes, and they are well tensioned, broken spokes should be rare. But it sounds like you are having a bad string of luck?
  • 2 0
@privateer-wheels: Maybe I'm doing it wrong, I dunno. Spokes popping seems to be a matter of fact for me. Not every ride, but pretty regularly. I choose to believe they just can't handle my awesomeness.
  • 1 0
@CarbonShmarbon I personally prefer being able to replace a spoke or two as opposed to having to replace the whole wheel. Like @privateer-wheels is saying, if they are good quality, properly tensioned, they should be solid. That, and you can find replacement spokes almost everywhere. I popped a spoke last week out in Virgin, and had it fixed within the hour because OTE Hurricane had a replacement in stock (did the work myself, but needed the part) Much thanks to those folks!
  • 1 0
@grizzlyatom: Weird, cuz I don't see any motorcycles in this article.
  • 3 0
@CarbonShmarbon: I like your point of view!

Are your wheels the factory set that came stock on your bike?
  • 2 0
@privateer-wheels: No, the original Giant AMs succumbed to radness in pretty short order, but in my defence they were really soft. I am currently attempting to destroy a set of Mavic Pros with the neato, extrenally threaded, bladed spokes which are way more fun to replace. The rims are still straight and true, which is impressive, hubs are good. I wanted them exactly because I don't need to redo my tubeless every time a spoke needs replacing.
  • 1 1
@SwampThAAng: PB isn't a website for sheep either, yet there seems to be herds of them on here.

Specialized, with the biggest R&D budget in the cycling world, just went back to single pivot on their flagship bike for a reason. When you come up with something better, be sure to let all these clueless bike engineers know about it
  • 1 0
@privateer-wheels: in your experience, do wheelsets using carbon rims pop more spokes than ones with aluminum rims? Or is the spoke popping a result of the parts used?
  • 3 0
@cuban-b: I can't say either is common. I have not seen a single wheel come back with even one broken spoke in either carbon or alloy builds in the past 3+ years building under the privateer banner. I think it a wheel is built to healthy tensions, with uniform tension spoke to spoke to ensure all spokes are sharing the load equally, spokes are much less likely to break. Combined with rims that have proper drilling that allow a nipple to articulate to facilitate direct line to the hub flange, and you really shouldn't be seeing broken spokes.

I guess that is to say, it's more often due to the build quality.

In many factory built wheels, spokes are not tensioned adequately/evenly. This leaves higher tension spokes carrying more load, while others that have not been tensioned properly going full slack. You end up fatiguing spokes in this scenario, to the point of failure. One of the many reasons hand built is better =)
  • 2 0
@privateer-wheels: you had me at nipple articulation lol.

Jokes aside, I agree that build quality is likely a larger culprit. I forgot that I was also using aluminum nipples which didn’t help.
  • 3 0
 @cuban-b: lol.

A spoke break and a nipple break are two different things. More often than not alloy nipple break because spokes have been cut too short and don't completely extend to the back of the nipple slot. Alloy nipple need the spoke to reinforce them. In the 3 years I have been building under the Privateer banner, I haven't had a spoke OR nipple break, and I do a fair amount of alloy nipples! Brass are just more tolerant to poorly lengthed spokes. High quality alloy don't give up much to brass, other than weight.
  • 2 0
@CarbonShmarbon: I have to imagine they ride like sh!t...I know carbon can be manipulated in ways metal cannot to be stiff, or flexy, but that design...I don't know if you could with those 5 spokes.

Nice looking monocoque bikes for the future...but watching the suspension working underneath you during a ride sounds riskier than texting while driving.

There is a small ski area in Connecticut called Powder Ridge that has a trail down a concrete waterslide that is very much like a bobsled track. It's super fun but fairly terrifying when you hit the vert at speed over concrete. It's a fun mountain in general and worth some laps if you're ever in central CT.
  • 1 0
Powder Ridge is awesome! A happy little mountain with some legit flow trails and rough East Coast DH. Hoping there will be an Eastern States Cup again, this year.
  • 1 0
Powder Ridge was the first place I ever skied at as a kid. I/ve long since moved away, but have heard that they have built some reasonable MTB trails.
  • 1 0
@Dustfarter, that’s cool to hear. I learned to ski there, and at Ski Sundown. I totally forgot about that place.

What happened to that guy? He was so entertaining in the comment sections.
  • 18 21
@in2falling: the guy said some wildly cringey rascist shit, and then excused himself for some other bullshit reason. Btw, those renderings look like garbage.
  • 9 8
@BobbyHillbomb: I thought he was actually banned for the racist comments?

@in2falling: just scroll to the bottom where the downvoted comments are, its like he's still there.

Klein called, they want their Mantra back...
  • 6 0
Sounded like the travel limiter on the bobsleigh track's first left turn. A lot of G force through those turns,
  • 1 0
Since it seems like you watched the bobsled vids closely, do you know what kind of rig would have been used for the alternate view 2nd vid, with the rap soundtrack, where the cam is behind and to the left of the rider? I don't see any stick or boom for a rider/bike mount, and it seems too close and with too much tree cover for a follow drone.
  • 6 0
Move away from two triangles, toward a monocoque? Like Mountain Cycle did in, what was that? 1994?
  • 4 0
Those are cool renderings. Although with that shock location, I can't help think it's the spiritual successor to the legendary Redalp....

www.redalp.com/EN
  • 1 0
I was thinking the same, but I don't know why the redalp gets so much flak. Sure it's not the prettiest but it's beam design seems logical when you see how close from each other top tube and down tube have come.
  • 1 1
@Will-narayan: You know, there's a small portion of me that agrees with you completely, it does sort of seem a touch unfair; after all, it's a high pivot, idler equipped bike with a linkage driven shock - very en vogue these days.
But then, after looking at it again for about two seconds, I'm right back where I started, opinion-wise..
I guess part of that is simply other companies have done a generally better job in packaging the same basic concept, at very least from an aesthetics point of view? Such as Commencal, Balfa, Forbidden, Norco, Canfield etc...
  • 6 0
That French music video is wild man...the fromage went bad
  • 2 0
Sebastien tellier is dope ! Sadly this is the censored video of him www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjCzZIL-OQY but still catchy and the most french stuff you'll find
  • 7 1
These are not concepts, they are computer renderings. Not the same.
  • 4 0
Those concept bikes look like the folding full sus Ali express bikes. That’s just not the direction mtb will be going
  • 1 0
Is it just me or a video of @mikekazimer dancing in the Aerobic championship would be very intertaining... I mean I know @mikelevy would probably do it non the less in bibshort just for the fun of it. Humm, consequence the next time @mikelevy use ''pinkers''? @brianpark
  • 1 0
I can see the monocoque concept being the next trend but there's still that dilemma of where do you put the water bottle? Inside the frame? I think that is a big part of the allure of the triangular frame provides a protected place for a shock and a water bottle. Cool bike concepts though. Starts to really blur the lines between a moto bike and a mtb.
  • 4 0
Soo in the future FOX has also accuired Manitou, not just Marz...
  • 1 0
A concept bike with a chain?? It should use "spooky force at a distance" technology for the drivetrain, and a biomimicry crank mechanism that would feature optimal non-circular pedal strokes more akin to running. At least.
  • 5 0
 Looks like a Redalp
  • 3 0
that bobsled run was fukin awesome ! I can't believe he was pedaling to go faster .
  • 2 0
I have just one question.. why is his GoPro attached to his Willy??
  • 1 0
 @pakleni: LOL !
  • 1 0
Do you need an idler gear for a high pivot e bike? I thought the cranks were like a free wheel so there'd be no pedal kickback. Or is it to just help chain stretch and keep from snapping the chain?
  • 1 0
That aerobics video went viral a several years ago, I think it was. People were using the footage to make music videos with recent songs. Enjoy "Shake It Off": www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9e7esJj6Hw

I was ashamed but also delighted when the Aerobic championship concluded. Only in covid could I watch that whole video with the wife and whiskey. I recommend it over watching GOT a third time.

Somehow the future looks very much like the 90s bike design.

Having Chains/Belts (instead of shaft drive through the chainstay) drive on a concept bike is like 2001 A space odyssey depicting using mini VHS tapes.

Me too. That downtube is made for a battery Big Grin (Well, in fact it is a centertube...like it! But the center of gravity is quite high.).
  • 1 1
That aerobics comp was hilarious! If anyone knows how, we need to insert the dance routine from Ross and Rachel on friends at the end of this. It would fit right in.
  • 1 1
oops, it was Ross and Monica
  • 2 0
i might cry if my pivots end up like that
  • 1 0
Why hasn't that bike been made yet?? It looks actually very possible and good.
  • 1 0
Seriously no ones gonna mention the sound that horse makes when it claps the water????
  • 1 0
Having the rear shock that far from the rear axle is going to make it flex like hell.
  • 1 0
So the concept bikes top tube is shortening itself by every push of shock? Hmm interesting, sounds like riding a caterpillar
  • 1 0
No, the main frame is fixed and it's the seatstay that is actuating the shock which just happens to be in the top tube.
  • 1 0
@monkeyseemonkeydo: Yeah I see it now, fugly.
  • 2 0
But dad, I'm a Mancycle... that video was great.
  • 1 0
Nothing new about monocoque frames. We had plenty in the 90s and early 00s. They were god ugly then and still are today.
  • 1 0
dam i have no idea where that camera is strapped on Antoni Smile
  • 1 0
I just asked a question about that above, and was continuing to read down through the comments to see if anyone else had an idea. At least I know I'm not alone! I don't see any stick or boom for a rider/bike mount, and it seems too close and with too much tree cover for a follow drone.
  • 4 2
 That horse one is nuts!
  • 1 1
 Don’t tell PETA.
  • 1 0
I actually watched a video from the library when I was about... 12ish? maybe? I think it was based on a true story but don't remember. It was about a girl doing just this except the horse runs down a straight runway (in the above video it looks like they don't do this... not with that ramp) and the girl jumps off of a crate onto it's back about 5 feet before the edge.

The point of the story though was she continued to do this after she lost her sight... I think it related to hitting her head or something after they jumped. Not sure.
  • 1 0
While I feel bad they subjected the poor animal to what was likely a terrifying experience, I can only imagine the forces involved for the rider were none to pleasant as well.
  • 2 1
@PHeller: I’m surprised the horse did it to be honest. I don’t know much about horses but it makes me wonder if the horse wanted to do it. They don’t jump over fences if they don’t want to, for example.
  • 2 0
@rosemarywheel: I remember this movie also. I looked it up, it is called Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken.
