Slack Randoms: Riding Val di Sole on a Unicycle, A Hubless Fatbike & More

Jul 16, 2021 at 10:38
by James Smurthwaite
We use Slack as our workplace communication tool at Pinkbike and we have a #randoms channel which we use to share an assortment of videos and stories from all corners of the cycling world and beyond... We thought a couple of the moments from the past week were too good not to share with a wider audience, so here are some of the highlights.

Riding Val di Sole on a Unicycle

Most people would struggle to ride the Black Snake on two wheels, these guys tackle it on just one.

A hubless fat bike

The Q is back again with another of his wild bike builds. This time it's a Tron-esque hubless bike. Jump to 5:44 if you want to skip all the engineering and just see the bike in action.

Lego mountain bike speeder

Marc Yarbrough thought his mountain bike was missing something, so he combined his hobbies. Here's his ride through Endor forest on his speeder bike.

Cyclist shoots driver in self-defense

A Texan cyclist has been told he was justified in using a firearm against a motorist after the driver allegedly drove into another rider.

The motorist has been identified as 26-year-old Jose Angel Hernandez who initially shouted at the cyclists to get out of the road then later jumped the curb and drove his vehicle at a woman on purpose.

The man she was riding with, who is currently unidentified, then drew his firearm and shot at Hernandez. Hernandez was taken to hospital with unspecified injuries and has now been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

A police officer at the scene said, "He was in fear of his life, and he was trying to defend himself,” abc13 reports.

Local cycle campaign group Bike Houston said on Twitter: “That anyone in our city feels the need to carry a weapon while riding their bike is a clear sign that people don’t feel safe around drivers—drivers who are more aggressive, and who are driving larger, more powerful vehicles than ever before. While we do not recommend people carry a weapon while riding their bikes, this incident shows that the threat of traffic violence is enough to convince some bicyclists that they must.”

The woman is said to be ok after the incident but said she is unlikely to cycle again.

@Peally: Americans are funny. It's funny that you find your thinking logical. But then again, you had Trump as a president to prove this point. I am not allowed to carry a gun in my country, yet a lot less cyclists per capita die here because motorists run over them on purpose. I even had a friend who went through something like in this story, yet no one got hurt in the end and the driver went to prison. Guns are terrible protection, funny dumb Americans.

@tipsword @Peally So you guys don't believe in a fair trial? You think every situation should be judged by an immediate death sentence? Yeah I'm pretty sure that's the way our law are written.  What scares me about the USA is that it's a democracy, and therefore fragile. Why isn't anyone calling out the billionaires who are destroying that country for profit? Rupert Murdoch and Robert Herring should be classified as domestic terrorists!
  • 13 13
@omclive: Add George Soros, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, BLM, Proud Boys and Insert Billionaire Name>. I don't believe our democracy is fragile but the groups that have run it the last 30 years have perverted beyond its normal orthodoxy.

@mtb-scotland: It's crazy, but my humble Midwestern state is bigger than the entirety of Scotland, with a much larger population to boot. That's one admittedly very minor state out of 50, in a nation touching two oceans and a sea with a population of 330 million. 3200 people died in car accidents this month too (nine millionths of one percent), and even that isn't even a statistical mouse fart in a hurricane.

But feel free to swim around in fantasy land being disgusted at the continent. I'll be in the other corner being disgusted at how many people we lose to lightning strikes and mutant midget clown attacks every year. Bless your heart, I don't give a shit about Scotland's laws and you shouldn't care about ours.

@Peally: “3200 people died in car accidents”

Not the best argument really, cars are actually NEEDED to transport people and goods. Billions upon billions has been spent to make them safer, laws are passed to ensure these safety upgrades are fitted and used.

How many guns in America are actually needed? And I think for about 10 bucks you could engineer in a completely fool proof safety measure to make sure that they all never fire again.

America’s “love??” with guns will not disappear in our lifetimes, the manufacturers make far to much money to allow it to end.

Remember everything you see in the media is overplayed. Sure mass shooting is a problem but there are hundreds of millions of people here. The vast majority of us are just like you living a happy peaceful life. I’m sure Scotland is beautiful and the US is too. How can you say it’s a shithole, because you watch the news? If they could afford to leave their country they'd realize the rest of the western world is pretty f*cking free , many a lot more free than them. Most people want to see their countries improve and progress Americans want it to regress so they can finally live out their fantasy of shooting a home invader and justify their fire arm expenditures.

What I'm asking about is actual legal freedom's. Because the indices that rank freedoms generally don't have the U.S. in the top 10 and countries like New Zealand come out on top.
  • 7 4
@BiNARYBiKE: Hundreds of Millions of American's don't drone on about "Meh Freedoms™" it's a select group of people that do so, people that are uneducated and aren't interested in a conversation but rather continually preaching their illogical rhetoric/NRA Propaganda that they read on a Facebook meme.

There's plenty of well meaning, educated Americans out there that wouldn't want to engage in a "Meh Freedom™ is better than your freedom" nonsense. The person who thinks America is the only truly free country on the planet is a dullard.

The last person that should ever own a gun is the person that hears a conversation about gun control and says "Try and take them". That comes across as an unstable person who's just itching to shoot someone.

  • 1 0
@azureblue: And don't forget the gearing. I'm guessing the maximum speed of this setup is probably 8mph if you had a cadence of 200 rpm. You could probably ride up a wall though. To achieve a reasonable top speed with that rear gear you would probably need another intermediate gearset to increase your gear ratio.
