With the World Cup XC season kicking off properly in Germany in May, we've taken a closer look at who will be battling it out this year. The UCI hasn't differentiated between Elite and standard teams yet this year so we've passed our magnifying glass over the top 15 teams from last year plus any remaining Elite teams from 2018 to cover as many as possible.

BIANCHI COUNTERVAIL
Stephane Tempier, Nadir Colledani, Chiara Teocchi

Stephane Tempier couldn't quite match his second place overall finish in 2017 but still had a strong 2018, finishing 15th. Nadir Colledani, who enjoyed a top ten in his first year elite, and Chiara Teocchi will continue to ride for Bianchi in 2019. 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Marco Aurelio Fontana becomes an e-bike racer with Focus. Learn more.
Tempier fought a hard one today.

CANNONDALE FACTORY RACING XC

The Grobert sisters move on but Cannondale still fields a strong team. Henrique is the UCI's second highest ranked rider, Maxime is the fourth and Manuel Fumic is the seventh. All will have an eye towards the podium at each of the UCI World Cup races. Learn more.
Maxime Marotte is one of the fast Frenchies challenging Nino Schurter s supremacy in mountainbiking. Up untill the very last moment he was within inches of leaders Gaze and Schurter.

CORENDON CIRCUS
Mathieu Van Der Poel, Loris Rouiller, Petter Fagerhaug, Ronja Eibl, Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado

After finishing second overall last year, Van Der Poel lines up for another season of mountain bike racing and confirms he is aiming for the Olympics in 2020. Yana just needed to ride consistently today but she did one beter than consistent.

SUPERIOR XC TEAM

How about Paul the Punter on Scott? Ex-Pinkbiker!

how has no one commented yet on the mtb racing team called MOUNTAINBIKE RACINGTEAM?

Same advertising firm behind Atherton bikes?

Bummer that Tandem racing has to sit out another season. Hopefully UCI comes around and gives the group biking the chance it deserves.

 We're blowing it.

Because it requires twice more attention

Finally an XC article! Thank you PB! Can you review some XC bikes please? I can't handle any more slackers.

 Jenny Rissveds on Specialized. Interesting.
  • 18 0
Really, the most interesting part is that she’s BACK! Too bad she doesn’t have a Factory team but I hope she has the support that a rider of her caliber deserves.
  • 5 0
@Chadimac22: True! Hope she get's back to fighting shape for the season!
  • 2 0
@Chadimac22: AGREED! I love that she is racing again more than anything, but seeing her on a Specialized makes me extra happy. She is a massive talent, and will be on a factory team soon if she chooses to do so.

Specialized's pay back for Kate Courtney jumping ship

@dypeterc: Not really... Jenny isn't on the factory Specialized team... she's just riding one of their frames.

After last year, I have never been so excited to watch the Women's XC go down!

But will anybody be able to beat Nino this year?
  • 8 0
Between Anton Cooper, Sam Gaze, Mathieu Van Der Poel, Maxime Marotte and a few others I think Nino's days at the top are being challenged. Not saying he's done for at all but he really has to fight hard this season. While I think Nino is great, its good to see tough competition out there.
  • 8 0
He's getting older and there is plenty of talented young blood chasing him. But seeing how much Nino loves and enjoys riding, I hope he does continue to win. He's the reason I started to ride mtb last year (yeah, I'm late to riding) and also the reason I got into racing just this year. It has been a humbling experience, but also a great time. I respect pro xc racer's so much more now that I have felt the pain.

Probably not in the women race!

Rob and Bart better come without marbles in their mouths to pronounce some of these team names...jeez.
"CST SANDD BAFANG"
"CS CARABINIERI - CICLI OLYMPIA - VITTORIA"
"MOEBEL MAERKI"
  • 21 0
 Rob will just say:

"CST Sand Bag"
"CS Carabiner Olympic Victoria"
"Meagen Markle"

Easy...

The strangest thing for me is that Kerschbaumer wasn't picked up by Specialized or Canyon (or someone else with a big budget. With some technical training that guy would be the biggest threat to Nino.
  • 4 0
Kerschbaumer is a machine! If he hadn't had those mechanicals at I think la bresse he would have won hands down. I can't remember what happened at world champs. But kerschbaumer is the one to watch.
  • 4 0
From what I've heard he is pretty wild guy who trains by himself haha. During winter he apparently works as skiing instructor and spends all free time climbing mountains and riding pow and doesnt even ride bikes at all until spring Big Grin
  • 2 0
I suppose he's got a contract with Torpado for another season or two. After that, I think, he's gonna go with bigger players. Meanwhile Torpado have basically won the lottery with all that podiums he will without a doubt get.
  • 2 0
He was with a big team before with Bianchi I believe coming out of u23s but struggled with that atmosphere and when he went with a smaller team, he said he does much better. Probably something to do with the pressure in a larger team.
  • 9 5
I don’t know who 50% of these riders are but I’d like to know by seeing more XC, less Amaury Pierron rolling around in the bushes on a two wheeled mobility scooter!
  • 1 1
If you didn't have a good laugh with the Amaury video, you are in trouble, dude! This or you're so much in love with Bear Grylls that you couldn't handle it Big Grin Big Grin
  • 2 0
Wonder what happened to Kulhavy. I remember him being one of the front-runners, on Absalon/Schurter level. Then he fell back and now he's not even with the factory team. Although, it's not quite clear what that 'independent program' from Spesh is.
  • 5 1
"Marco Aurelio Fontana becomes an e-bike racer with Focus..." Is this the graveyard for ex-XC racers?
  • 9 0
Is e-bike racing really a thing?
  • 1 0
 @jwestenhoff:
In Italy sadly yes. There's an e-enduro championship ????
  • 2 0
 don't mind the ????
  • 2 1
When you're too old and slow to hang with the fast guys, I guess you have to go to e-bike racing to earn some money if you can't find a real job.
  • 5 0
XCO racing is fun to watch now with the tech downhills and shorter tracks.
