Throwback Thursday: Pinkbike's Video of the Year 2011 - Matt Miles at Sun Peaks

Mar 3, 2022 at 7:51
by James Smurthwaite

Released in July 2011, Silvia films shoot with Matt Miles at Sun Peaks soon became a firm favourite on Pinkbike. It soon became VOD, then VOM and finally took Video of the Year in an end of year poll, beating Danny MacAskill's Industrial Revolutions by 63% to 37%. There's no deep story going on here, just incredible riding and filming that still holds up more than a decade on.

bigquotesTelling the story of all our favorite trails on our favorite mountain seems like a great way to start a relationship between Silvia and Sun Peaks. So Matt Miles hits the trails hard, smashing and slashing his way around the mountain with a style that can't be faked.Silvia Films

"Mommy, why isn't Matt roosting every single corner?"

"Roosting wasn't invested yet, honey. Back in 2011 cornering speed was the priority, not tossing dirt around for Instagram."
  • 35 0
 yup... watch how Minaar corners.

Comment of the year right here.

 100%!

Oh the good old days! The grass was greener, the dirt was loamier, the wheels were smaller, frames were metal, and going fast was cool.
  • 3 0
Ha ha, this is so spot on! There was a nice roost just about to spray @ 0:42 and my brain conditioned to modern videos was instantly confused. The editors in 2011 were like, "Sick cornering complete, splice to the next clip".
  • 1 0
 @wda1wustl: was thinking the same.
  • 3 0
 2:00 Sam Hill gap from F1rst ?!

Such a bummer these guys don't make videos anymore. its like they disappeared in 2016

 And 26" wheels!
  • 2 0
 yes please!
  • 2 0
@rickybobby18: Im glad I wasn't the only one whose first thought went to this.
  • 1 0
@rickybobby18: If you brought back P.O.D., you might have to bring back Nickelback, Creed, and Puddle of Mudd. Maybe we can leave those guys back in 2001... Not my favorite music time period. Might be an unpopular opinion though!

 this!!!!

The old demo honestly still looks sick
  • 12 0
and she looks soooo plush. 26er DH was probably the funnest bike category ever made
  • 9 1
@Kobeefton88: As someone who still has to/gets to ride one of those bikes ... I think your memory is deceiving you. A rider like matt makes it look better than it actually is. It's not all bad ... but it's not all THAT either Wink
  • 2 0
@Kobeefton88: I agree 100% this is still fun to just watch... oh I miss my V10 from back then.
  • 2 0
So true. Still have mine. I guess it's more of a "park bike" these days. Still fun as all get out....
  • 65 0
Still my all time favourite. Silvia days were the golden age of PB.
  • 13 0
Those were great videos. I still watch them for stoke.
  • 11 1
I had playlists of all the songs featured in their video's. Good old days.
  • 15 0
And MTB in general, at least for me. MTB entered a new era lately, it's not the same.
  • 6 0
@inside-plus: Corporatization of the sport. Good news is that if you don’t come on here or social media nothing seems like it changed…
  • 5 0
@keatonistheguy: lol yeah nah, even going out riding the scene has changed. It's great to have everyone out riding now though so nothing to complain about.

Long live chainsaw captures what mtb was back then so well I think, how small and conected the community felt.

I ran into these guys at Whistler the year after these edits came out and I was pretty starstruck. So inspirational!
  • 33 1
It was so fun riding bikes three sizes too small
  • 3 0
naw thats the right size for this kinda riding
  • 1 0
I was 14 back then and the Bikes had just the right size for me back then
  • 30 0
This video is definitely cgi.... There is no way you could ride like that on such antiquated geometry.
  • 8 0
No big wheels or electronic gears. This is definitely fake.
  • 28 0
With those small wheels, he must have a BMX background..
  • 28 0
MAKE PODS AND VODS GREAT AGAIN!
  • 24 0
Top resolution 480p - those were the days!
  • 4 0
Proof that quality isn't just about the camera.
  • 11 0
 @noapathy: It's also about resolution.
  • 2 0
 @colincolin: Thanks, genius.
  • 3 0
I remember me and my friends waiting around for an hour while a VOD loaded so we could watch it in "high resolution".
  • 2 0
It's so hard to believe that this was the original quality I watched it in. It was so much more crisp in my mind. Is that the case or is it just imagination and nostalgia filling in the missing pixels?
  • 18 0
This clip still holds up, Matty is so stylish. I miss the Silvia edits.
  • 4 0
I like this but riding and I guess filming has come on so much that even fairly low cost edits now compare really well with this VOY for instance the recent transition team vid: www.pinkbike.com/news/video-transition-introduces-the-mountain-bike-team.html
  • 2 0
@Woodpeckar: Yea I mean any yahoo can buy a camera 10-20x times better than what these guys were using 10 years ago...
  • 3 0
Another all time fav from them - www.pinkbike.com/video/270817
  • 13 0
I was finally getting comfortable not having a DH bike then this classic had to pop up. I guess I'll be getting another one now...
  • 2 0
So true! I am suddenly thinking I need a DH bike for the first time in years!! Sweet vid, love the riding and the music!
  • 8 0
Damn, crazy that was over ten years ago! Such great memories of riding in the sun peaks camps those years with Dylan and Matt and Justin coaching us little shitheads. I think I’m going to rewatch every single Sylvia video now!
  • 11 0
 Silvia never disappoints!
  • 9 0
I remember being a kid in the bicycle cafe and They would play this video on a loop and I couldn’t stop watching it. Such an awesome video even today.
  • 8 2
Ahhh. 2011 when life seemed much easier, care free, and I actually had the time to get to 3 or 4 bike parks a year. I didn't realize how good I had it... I wish we were working on saving the environment, preventing global pandemics, and our friendly Russian president from bombing everything.
  • 9 1
Clearly this video is fake. No one could ever possibly ride a bike with 26" wheels and 2011 geometry at that speed.
  • 7 0
still the best bike park in BC...
  • 1 0
I was there, liked it's flow trails and a lot of big jumps. But Kicking Horse and Valemount is still much better
  • 1 0
@valrock: Sunpeaks is all about natural steep trails meant for DH bikes.
  • 1 0
@jaydawg69: what is KH then? Have you been there? Doesn't get more natural than that.
  • 1 0
@valrock: honestly never been to KH other than watching some youtube vids... looks great but really far away unfortunately. My original comment was more of a dig against WBP.
  • 1 0
@jaydawg69: so you didn't visit ALL parks in BC but claimed SP being the best Big Grin Have a nice day my friend
  • 1 1
@valrock: well Whistler is considered best in the world so....
  • 5 0
Does Beta bike even deserve to post content this good?

Man, can’t believe how different of a time this was, and it wasn’t even *that* long ago…
  • 6 0
only thing that has aged less then that video is the troylee d3
  • 3 0
Still the best. (As well as Saint brakes.)
  • 3 0
Loooooovvvved this video and all their others when they came out. The raw video of Matt on the Kona Bass right when he was coming back into the scene honestly could be my favorite “edit” ever.
  • 2 0
 @Herndonmtb: sweet vid!
  • 4 0

  • 3 0
Aww yeah. I remember I had that song for years like "I'm going to save this for something good.."
  • 3 0
That’s how I imagine my dream ride going down! No crazy doubles just pinning it through beautiful terrain. Love it!!
  • 2 0
There were plenty of doubles off what dont looking doublable
  • 2 0
I love it that every legendary video is with the legendary Demo 8 bike Smile That frame was the best of the best. MIss those time where everything looked cool and unique.

Oh yes that one! This is still one of the most "captivating" MTB videos I've seen. So good "feel of speed"...
  • 3 0
Plain and simple! Style for miles!
  • 3 0
Not one drone in the whole video... Now those were the days haha

Still one of my favourite videos, definitely one of the best riders of all time.
  • 1 0
If you want better quality, and to throw some ad revenue to the original filmers just go to the Youtube upload.

  • 1 0
still one of the best!! i remember watching it over and over again, and dreaming about that bike! then i bought one in 2013, and i still have it!!

  • 1 0
Incredible how high quality video has become so easily accessible over the last decade. Fun throwback video.
  • 2 0
What's the soundtrack to this vid?
  • 3 0
It's a remix of Phantogram's "Mouthtful of Diamonds"

Couldn't tell you what remix, though.
  • 2 0
 @P00t: Nice one.
  • 4 0
@wilkassm: Wasn't this remix originally by The Jackals?

@veero: Also check out Phantogram's 'When I'm Small' Chuck Brody remix.
  • 2 0
Still one of the sickest shredits! Bring back VOD Pb!!
  • 2 0
That dirt looks beyond perfect sheesh. DH Bikes have always ripped.

Back in the days when Pinkbike had competent editors and great content and not run by posers with lack of competence.
