Throwback Thursday: Steve Peat’s Les Gets Heartbreak

Nov 21, 2018 at 9:24
by James Smurthwaite

With Les Gets back on the World Cup calendar next year, it seemed only right to look back at one of the classic downhill races from over a decade ago.

The Rainbow stripes had always evaded Peaty but coming into the 2004 World Championships he was the hot favourite. He was leading the series and had pocketed two World Cup wins, including one just round the corner at Les Deux Alpes, it seemed destined to be his year.

He put two seconds into the field in qualifying and was leading the race at the halfway point but disaster struck. Peaty tumbled to the ground in a cloud of dust within sight of the line and could only recover to eleventh handing the win to his bitter rival, Fabien Barel. It would be another five torturous years before Peaty finally clinched the Rainbows in Canberra.

Enjoy this classic section from Earthed courtesy of the lens of Alex Rankin.

I suspect many Pinkbikers given the chance to go back in time would not choose lunch with Jesus, but would be found standing outside a corporate bike company's office waving around geometry chart screen caps and yelling, "Make the bikes longer!"

If you went back to 1998 and approached HQ of Spec, Cannondale or Trek with a transparent "Lower, Longer, Slacker" you would first have to pass through the angry crowd of people shouting "disc brakes are for fat, lazy losers and will destroy our trails!!!"

@WAKIdesigns: which is exactly what the e-bike haters are saying now. If you'll please excuse me, I'll zip up my fire suit now.

@wako29: you're in for the cow farm cleaner episode of "America's toughest jobs"

I'd spend every last penny on buying Apple and Google stock, then sell it in 2007 and buy gold and sell that in 2015. I'd be retired by now, drinking exotic cocktails on my exotic yacht full of exotic women. Screaming about bike geo would be the least of my worries because I still had fun on those unridable bikes back then.

@Boardlife69: yes... then if I were you I'd start a company called 1500 and make all sorts of bike with 1500mm wheelbase and gearbox, including a Dirt Jumper, saying the whole industry is stupid and their clients are sheep. 120 down country bike with dual crown fork. We'd hire a bunch of pro riders. We'll set the loss limit at 20mln and see how long can we run on awake as fuk keyboard experts as clients.

1500 - For fast riders by fast riders, 26" only, no motors, no bullsht. Full alu, full send. Hire me as your Product manager and PR person... we will deliver what real mountain bikers want.

@wako29: @wako29: I think most e-bike haters take issue with them not actually being bicycles, but what do I know.

Went to see Steve Peat's Bikes and Beers show, what a freaking legend! A great story told by the man himself. So much nostalgia, I never quite realised growing up with MBUK and Dirt how much of it imprinted on my brain. Can't believe how devastating that must have been blowing out on that last corner.

absolutely this! I went to see Steve talk as well. Could remember reading about all of his big races in Dirt as he was talking them through

@Onewilddiesel: no but that happened in the same row on the other side from me. I put my head on my lap just as the break was happening and just passed out. A stranger and my pal held my arms and pulled me back up then I came round. Then 10 minutes later the ambulance was in for that poor sod.

I f'ing love the earthed series! For some reason, of all the bike movies of yore, those are the ones i enjoy the most nowadays! It's so raw and fun to watch. Not as sketchy as 80's lycra wearing DH, and much less tame than today's DH races.

Arguably the best mountain bike video series ever made. Alex Rankin is the man.

I remember being gutted for Peaty, I still to this day can’t understand how he dropped it where he did...

It’s bit like Ratboy launching the bridge at worlds and cabbaging himself when he didn’t need to!

I first rode Les Gets in 1998, I had a disc brake on the front my my new Santa cruz super 8 and a magura on the rear... I went through a set of pads a day and when I ripped my rear tyre apart had only a choice of Michelin or Michelin... Its a whole different place nowadays...

You can either remember this as the race that Steve lost or the race that Fabian won. Personally I chose the latter
