UCI Working With Zwift to Launch Cycling E-Sports World Championships in 2020

Eurobike 2019

Electricity and cycling has been a hot topic over the past few years and now the UCI is looking to take another step in that direction with the first-ever Cycling Esports World Championships in 2020.

Now, you may be thinking, "Hang on, haven't we just had the first eMTB World Championships in Mont Sainte Anne?" And you would be right, but this isn't about bikes with electrical motors riding outside but instead indoor trainers hooked up to video games. That's right, the wait is finally over to be World Champion at exercising. Inside your house.

All joking aside, esports is a big business with the global economy expected to top $1 billion this year for the first time, so it's easy to see why the cycling world wants a piece of that pie. Other sports have already embraced esports such as soccer, through the FIFA games, and NFL through the Madden franchise. There has, in fact, already been some cycling racing in this area too with British Cycling holding its own E-Cycling World Championship last year and handing national jerseys to Cameron Jeffers and Rosamund Bradbury.

Zwift have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the UCI and together they will be responsible for the governance and development of cycling esports as a new discipline starting as soon as next year. At the moment, we haven't heard of any concrete plans for mountain bikes to be involved but the press release did mention that "different formats of racing, for individuals and teams, will be tested". Let's also not forget that Zwift debuted their mountain bike software including steering at Eurobike this year, so it's definitely not beyond the realm of possibility.

Zwift will now work towards building reliable hardware that can be sanctioned by the UCI, is resilient to mechanical fraud and includes a "rider identification system, including height and weight." The date and venue of the World Championships are yet to be confirmed but the UCI and Zwift have also agreed that a maximum of 15 National Championships will be organised as well as Continental Championships. The Zwift application will be the only program used for all these events.

Eurobike 2019

bigquotesCycling esports is a fantastic opportunity for the development of cycling. It is a new way of practising cycling that is expanding rapidly and enables more athletes, whether beginners or more experienced, to train and race regardless of what the weather is like and where they live. The Memorandum of Understanding between our Federation and Zwift is a decisive step towards the total integration of cycling esports by the UCI.David Lappartient, UCI President

bigquotesEarlier this year, we stated our ambition to develop an esports platform, but I think it’s much more than that. We are looking to establish a new approach to the sport. This partnership is a significant leap forward in that journey. We are at the very beginning of a long and exciting roadmap here at Zwift as we look to establish a new and innovative cycling discipline.”Craig Edmondson, Zwift Esports CEO

@Lumlumz: what about an e-moped? I tried an e-mtb for the first time yesterday (corporate event, I had nothing better to do) and it is very much like a moped.

I never realized that gaming was a real addiction until we had some tenants move in. From what I see the male never leaves the house, he just games(I can here him yelling at his game through the attached garage). The female goes to work, walks the dog, takes the trash out. I denied this was happening for months, but it is and apparently is not all that uncommon.

@vapidoscar: I commiserate...locals at my park have taken shovels axes mattocks and saws to berms and wooden features, as well as disrupting meetings, publicly insulting the government officials, and lobbying to ban bikers... but who built and maintains every trail in the park? Oh that's right, the bikers. They keep those horse trails going, thank you scumbags. Razz And is it private land? No, it's a county park. But the band of rich hikers & equestrians around it want to keep it like a private road+greenbelt, and don't want noisy (fun) peasant (hard-working) mtbers ruining everything. The trail system is old limited and in disrepair. A few new additions and designated sign/usage for each group would solve virtually everything. But between hikers bikers and equestrians, that triangle will always be po'd in some form, and then the local Audobon Society chapter jumps in saying any new work will destroy habitat and kill and endanger hundreds if not thousands of species. So the officials work with the park and the mtb/trails group, get a plan set up, then back down cause there's a virtual civil war and politically they don't want to alienate voters. A kid in my troop didn't get his Eagle... tried to set up a project at the park and the ranger told him, yeah good luck can't help you, even though you're exactly what we need. It's... [let's just say... a big hot pile of mess] right now and nothing's getting done.
Seriously people. It's not your land, they're not your trails, we're all stewards, why can't this be worked out? You'd think an > 1300 acre park in the middle of rural farmland would have ample room for people. Rolleyes
Why are people so selfish?

@bikekrieg: You do know that Zwift actually does have power ups? But the ability to throw bananas and stuff would be pretty fun especially for people with smart trainers with feedback, like the Tacx Neo. It already simulates ice, bumps, and road surfaces of all sorts. No reason it couldn't suddenly lose all resistance when you get hit with a banana.
  • 2 0
@bikekrieg: Ummm, can you please bring this to Zwift's attention? That would be amazing. Really.

There's a good reason to play Counter Strike, instead of arranging real shoot-out. There's a good reason to play Starcraft, instead of rallying another race's planet to start a war. There's a good reason for speeding in Gran Turismo, instead of making a threat with high speed car out on the street. There's a good reason to compete in a real-life bike race, instead of Zwift. Hope this idea will die, as it already makes a room for cheating, even without trophies.
  • 7 0
Very interesting. I'm not an expert on Zwift but I know I've ridden on numerous Peloton bikes and the effort = output was not the same from one bike to the next. Not sure how all these things are "calibrated". Hopefully we'll have Strava World Championships soon!

I hope my kids don’t see this... there are already too many things trying to keep people indoors these days... especially aimed at children... not that this is particularly geared towards kiddos.  If this means fewer riders beating up on the real trails then cool. Bonus that I have a hunch there'll be lots of second hand bikes available for sale cheap, I envision the classified along the lines of "This Yeti SB150 was only used for one Zwift season, I decided switch to a new Evil as it fits my avatars style more."

The decline of wc titles is continuing. I knew it! Once you start with ebikes, next you don‘t even have to swing a leg for a title.
  • 2 1
I'm not sure I'm down with this. I understand Zwift racing for fun in the wintertime or offseason for us amateurs, and also pro teams using race results on Zwift as means of talent spotting riders for racing professionally. If these riders are found and able to turn Zwift racing into a career professionally outdoors, that seems like a viable option for some riders who may be geographically isolated from many outdoor racing opportunities. But to race solely indoors on Zwift seems like a weak world championship idea. The CEO of Zwift has already said he wants Zwift in the Olympics, so maybe they think this is a logical first step to the Olympics, but I feel like Zwift is pushing their platform a bit too hard with this. I already don't like that they try to infuse so many aspects of various social media sites into Zwift, but this is even crazier. Most of us just want something to keep us reasonably fit in the winter, but Zwift act like they want us all to become addicted to their platform, and even replace riding outdoors, not supplement it. This feels slightly sinister.

E-sports are not sports. Period. They just call it that for some strange reason. Here’s the dictionaries definition for the word sport: “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment”.
Skills and entertainment yes, but physical exertion.. the one defining physical act of computer activities are sitting on your butt so.. that applies for cycling as well, but in a completely different way. Change the name e-sports to something else. That way kids will maybe seek outdoor sports instead of sitting-on-your-ass “sports”. I am a teacher by the way, so I do see a lot of this happening: Kids going to e-sports, drinking coke and eating junk. Doing sports you know..

Zwift makes indoor trainers tolerable at best. But sometimes I just can't be bothered when it's -30 out, after a long day from work, to get my fat bike outside (especially if it's wet and slushy).

Zwift already has scheduled "races". So sanctioning it and turning it into a competition is only natural for the human race.

I support this more than e-bikes...because you actually still need to be fit, and ride a bike to compete. It's not like "playing" soccer/football/hockey using a headphone, keyboard and mouse like other e-sports.

This sentence precludes the inclusion of this article on Pinkbike. Or, at least, it should. Pinkbike is supported by outdoor enthusiasts.

Interested to see how this develops. Whenever you have competition, you're going to see the industry step in to optimize the equipment. Just curious to see what Zwift specific bikes will look like. What pressures people run to have perfect grip on the roller for sudden sprints whilst minimizing rolling resistance. New-old school narrow rims to work well with trainer tires. Zwift specific suspension and damper tunes... Oh boy, this thing is getting disgusting before it has even taken off. If UCI really thinks we need another discipline at the Worlds, they could consider the 4X racing Worlds at the actual World Championships instead of as an isolated event. With actual moving bikes, could be fun.

Came here to see the irrational hate, wasn't disappointed. I live in a place that has shitty winters, imagine that. Never been able to hack an indoor trainer no matter what I had to watch or distract me. Last winter got a Tacx Neo 2, threw my many years unused road bike on it with a few comfort tweaks, signed up for Zwift, and I love it. I love Fortnite too, so clearly I'm of a certain mindset. This setup had just enough fun to keep me on the bike, and finally went into the spring not being an anchor for my West Coast riding buddies. As for an actual competition, so effing what? Sit and play Fortnite, burning next to no extra calories, and maybe win a few million. Ride a trainer and maintain some fitness and win, well, whatever they gonna award. What's to hate about that? I just don't get it.
