Video: A Lake District Epic on eMTBs

 Well by the looks of it they rode all the way up Helvellyn then down, across up to surprise view in borrowdale, then all the way over to Cleator Moor (I think). I suspect they may have returned to the car park more than once during this epic.

 The more batteries you use the more epic it is, what doesn't make sense about that?

 If they can't switch main batteries I would expect they also changed bikes. Don't know if the battery comes out the frame?

I'm heading up to the Lakes in a few weeks but on a non assist not that matters I would gauge my fitness as being pretty good, any particular trails/location you would recommend riding? Any tips would be grateful, thank you in advance.

Borrowdale bit is where they are on a bit of a cliff surrounded by trees looking out over the lake below, there's a famous route called borrowdale bash which goes up by that way, some nice descents if it's not too busy with hikers but still more of an xc route really.
Trailforks is useful for finding off piste stuff in the forests, the orange routes in Grizedale are canny good

I'm originally from Manchester and enjoyed going to the Lakes most years in my late teens and twenties biking and fell running. Now I'm in my 40's I live down near Forest Of Dean which has some good riding and in to South Wales but it will be good to get into the hills and away from trail centres, but as you say I will have to contend with the walkers. Will def check out Grizedale, cheers

 @kennyloggedins Do you honestly think that a sunrise ride up Helvellyn followed by a hard session up those (well known locally) woods, topped off with an evening Borrowdale Bash wouldn't constitute for an "Epic" day out on the bike? If you mean to tell me that you can do all that riding on your mtb without popping back to the van for some refreshments, transportation and fist bumps then I'd be incredibly impressed.

 Battery just allows a ride to be more epic. Instead of climbing the vast majority of the time you are doing way more DH.
Slow sweaty climbing on an old timers retro slow bike doesnt equal epic, it is about how far you go, how much you climb, and how much fun you have on the downhills.

 @mi-bike: I'm not the biggest fan of ebikes but that doesn't make sense to me. I ride with ebikers sometimes and they are about as fast as me on the downhills but like twice as fast uphill. How would that equate to "much more time going uphill"?

 @DoubleCrownAddict: just get fitter. Throwing an equivalent mountain bike around on the downhills is so much easier than trying to get a mobility bike down the hills, especially in the lake district,where you constantly need to pop the bike up over features.

when you get a spare minute have a look at the environmental impact of mining the various minerals from which ebike batteries are made. lithium, nickel, cobalt etc

Just doesn't sit right with me that ebikes add to the demand while offering nothing more than convenience

 @johnnyboy11000: not to mention battery disposal when your battery is toast and have to swap a new one. There is already a waste/sustainability issue in the industry without throwing battery waste in the mix just so your bike can function.

 @johnnyboy11000: and? batteries are here to stay. Industries for recycling them and reusing the valuable materials in them are a great opportunities for the future.
Humanity will always have to deal with waste materials and learn to recycle. The battery technology is going to be one of the most valuable ones, we need to learn how to make them lasting, recyclable etc etc.
Phones are arguably much bigger waste right now for the environment, but nobody complains about them.
And phones actually jump started the battery revolution we see the last 15 years, which made e-cars and e-bikes possible.

 @johnnyboy11000: I'm literally an exploration geologist. I know full well the impacts of current mining operations. There are much more sustainable methods upcoming (look into united downs lithium/geothermal if you're interested) so it's only a matter of time. On top of that, the quantity of lithium and REEs in an ebike battery is in the grams. You're not saving the world riding your carbon wonderbikes about anyway, this hardly makes a difference.

 @danbgbg: not sure he's complaining about the value of battery tech, I think the value is obvious. Its the NEED that is the issue. Phones cannot operate without a battery and battery alternatives for vehicles that are dependent on fossil fuels is a needed change....but we already have the most environmentally friendly means of powering MTBs....the human body; there is no environmental advantage or need to replace that with battery assist.

 @SATN-XC: exactly. the only need it addresses is the need to market MTBs, and bikes in general, to a wider, richer, lazier audience.

And danbgbg I am aware of the opportunities involved in dealing with problems caused by waste materials, I work at Sellafield, there will be work there for generations to come cleaning that place up - would you say that is a good thing?

 @SATN-XC: lol, first the human body needs food, and the process of making food, consuming it, and turning it into calories - it is not a given it is more carbon neutral than charging a battery and discharging it
that is a bit of a joke, but also - not quite. when you replace certain % of the calories burnt with the battery discharging, the carbon difference will be close to zero.
as far as other pollution from batteries - as I said, battery recycling will be one of the industries of the future. And ebikes are still small % of the overall batteries being in circulation.
I'm saying, the argument about pollution with ebikes - it is a bit ridiculous. Using the car to get the to the trails is probably far more damaging. we can make the argument that MTB overall is just damaging to the environment, and stop doing it. After all, producing a new MTB is quite a challenge.
Just let people enjoy nature. EMTB is one of the good ways to introduce new people in the sport, to nature, and make them love our environment more.

what can I say - it is a huge challenge, but to blame e-MTBs for this problem is a bit ridiculous. I feel it is just feeling "righteous anger" to justify eMTB hatred. Waste is introduced by everything we do and we have a lot of work to deal with it.

 @danbgbg: see I didn't blame ebikes for anything did I. I actually said it didn't sit right with me that they add to an existing problem for no justified (in my opinion) benefit to society. "EMTB is one of the good ways to introduce people to the sport" - on the contrary I think it is one of the worst - even higher price of entry to what is already out of reach for many people, additional environmental cost, and a poor workout in comparison with a proper bike fitness wise.
Yes hopefully battery recycling will be one of the industries of the future - but wouldn't it be even better if we didn't have a need to create entire industries in order to deal with problems caused by previous generations

 if it was a MTB you wouldn't need to to refer to it as an E-MTB or E Bike......it would just be a MTB or a Bike. None of your prior examples required this distinction. Not saying you cannot enjoy riding an E-Bike, look super fun, just don't ignore the fact that bikes with motor assists on them are in their own category of two wheeled machines.

 Any suggestion for some epic ride there? I'd love to ride in Wales in the automn. This region looks so beautiful.

 While I would agree that Wales & Scotland are better overall than the Lakes, I definitely wouldn't say it was lame. If you go at the right time of day you can take your pick of steep techy descents without having to worry about smashing any hikers, and there are some cracking off-piste tracks hidden away in some of the forests.

Maybe if you only stick to what's in the guide books then yeah it can be pretty lame unless you're an XC masochist

 Given his profile location, I think he’s trying to sarcastically head off the hordes of middle aged blokes on ebikes who will now be planning to descend on the Lakes, and who will inevitably be calling mountain rescue to send them fresh batteries…

the place is already full of them, and like in this video they still drive to trails and ride the same stuff as we do on proper bikes

 @rsbromley: Im from the lakes and although the riding is really good if you know where to go, I would travel 3 hours north for a weekend away riding at the golfie in Innerleithen
