[Updated] Video: Aaron Gwin Teases New Downhill Bike

Aaron Gwin has posted a video today of himself testing a new downhill bike with just 8 weeks to go until racing kicks off in Portugal.

The bike looks to be a total redesign of the M29 the team was riding last season. Gwin has been testing out mixed wheel combinations from World Champs onwards and we'd put our houses on this being a mullet bike too. This is more than just a few geometry tweaks and a new leverage ratio, though; the suspension layout has been modified, with a link that connects the seat stays to the top tube, and the shock positioned very low in the frame.

It looks like an aluminum frame, and it wouldn't be the first time Jeff Steber has been able to build a custom prototype bike for the team to meet the trends of the World Cup circuit. Most recently were the aluminum M29s wheeled out at Fort William in 2017 for Jack Moir and Dean Lucas that he pieced together by hand in California before shipping it out to Scotland.

Gwin was tight-lipped on details of the bike in his caption, simply saying, "I gotta say, it was a good day," but we've reached out to him and he told us:

 @scoobaru: I don't get the implied joke, but Buick is a American automobile manufacturer. I've never seen them make anything remotely exciting though, really their styling is best described as dumpy, so I don't get the connection to Gwin's new bike or to a guy who drives a McLaren!

 People, don't believe everything you see on the internet. This is the new Trust Emoji linkage DH fork. It has just been stickered up to disguise as a telescopic fork. They've managed to realize and more curved axle path out if it to squeeze 10" of curved travel out of it. It manuals like a dream.

 @vinay: Well, I think Trust was comparing the Trust fork to a Porsche, and conventional telescopic forks to Buick. And, for the record, Buick has made some noteworthy cars - such as the Grand National. But, ya, in general, they have a reputation as a soft, ill-handling funny smelling car for your grandparents to drive around.

 @landscapeben: It's in relation to the TRUST FORK review on here a day or so ago where the marketing fool compared a regular telescopic fork to a Buick and the Trust fork to a Porsche, read the review and you'll get why Trust is getting so much shit thrown their way, even on none related stories.

 @whitebullit: Actually no, the 959 was built as a Group B car, but was too late to the party, by the time Porsche had finished it, Group B was banned, so the obvious next step was Dakar. Also in 86’ it raced Le Mans but renamed the 961, it came 7th overall. 1st in its class. I’d say that makes it a successful car.

 @Cord1: im sorry, the 959 was built for the dakar my friend, by the time they built the car group b was over so they switched their main focus to the paris-dakar. in fact the first year the "959" entered not a single one actually finished, the original paris-dakar 959 winner everyone remembers was actually a 911 converted to AWD dubbed the 953, that was a year before the official 959 was finished.

 @whitebullit: Cord1 is right, 959 was build to compete in group B, but there were few mostly cost related delays that caused it not being homologated till Group B was banned for good.

 @whitebullit: Originally the 959 was designed and built for Gruppe B, but it didn't make it in time. They converted it for Paris-Dakar. It didn't participate much in road racing, but did win it's class (7th overall) in 24 Hours of Le Mans.

 if you look further back in mtb history, intense and santa cruz have always had collaborations; i think they jointly designed/implemented the VIrtual Pivot Point (VPP)

 @mrkamot: this is correct. Santa Cruz bought the patent from Outland and licensed it to Intense with, from what I understand, full access to what Intense was working with on the patent and their R&D bikes.

Also, if you search Shawn Palmer intense proto, He had a low shock mount proto at Fontana in 2015 or 16, well before we saw anything official from Santa Cruz. So really, Intense and SC have always been working off each other's bikes since the first Spider/Blur they came out with.

 @kiddlivid: +1 to this. We saw palmer ripping around Reno and Tahoe on a 160-170 trail bike with a lower mounted shock in raw alloy for the last several years. We were working on it in our shop at least a full year before the Nomad came out (yes I do realize the V10 has been around for many years but so have the Intense Mseries bikes). It very much resembled the prototype that Isabeau was riding at the end of last season in the EWS. I would definitely argue that they have been co-developed rather than cat chasin mouse.

 @kiddlivid: the Santa Cruz Driver 8, made from 2009 to 2011, was the first Santa Bike to incorporate the lower link VPP design. I have one and it is a 26 great bike.

The Driver 8 is rad and beefy. Four bearings in the lower link. That anodized Sun Kissed Orange color looks crazy in the sun.

Gives exposure to the top people in the sport, especially considering what some of the lower ranked folks get paid. If they have a good race and sneak into 5th that’s a podium which is just so rad for them. I think it’s b.s. that the EWS decided to only do a top 3.

 Absolutely not. There is no such trail in Laguna. And I have never ridden it more than 100 times. Usually a LOT faster than that though - if it existed, which it doesn't.

 @motorusty2: listen, we all poach trails and always have. Precious little choice in that regard given the level of hate that MTB riders have been subjected to over the years. But blasting closed/illegal trail names out on an international forum falls under the heading of “poor form” to say the least.  A lot of other bike companies have been doing a lower link/slammed shock design, of varying designs and platforms. Not just banshee. Commencal, Corsair, GT(and their variants from Mongoose and Schwinn), Evil, DeVinci, Polygon and on and on and on. I don't know if Banshee did it first or if one of the others did but it would be hard to make an argument stick that one did vs the other.

 Deep in a Ridemonkey forum thread, the guy who is making tantrum bikes said he had approached them to make his frames. Apparently, due to new California regulations of some sort, Intense had to stop mass manufacturing of frames and they were selling off all their equipment to do it so they couldn't help him. That was one of the reasons they stopped.

 @thenotoriousmic California has a solid history of over regulation in several industries. Sometimes for the good, but often too much red tape and it ends up killing of the small guys like Intense.

 @thenotoriousmic: Intense didn't say this publicly, this was another industry person. Licensing, re-tooling and inspections when dealing with environmental regulations can be impossibly expensive for small company's which Intense very much is.

Turner and a few other California company's have all gone carbon as well due to manufacturing in the area drying up.

 @Balgaroth: To each his own. I loved their DH bikes, but the latest generations of carbon bikes since the SB66c are amazingly good-looking and among the best riding IMO. And they do not make "enduro" bikes only: SB100 is an XC/Backcountry bike, SB130 and SB140 are trail-oriented. Only the bigger ones, like the SB150 and SB165 can be considered as enduro bikes.

 @Balgaroth: to be fair, I'm an intense fan and have owned a few but when they had alloy frames sure they looked good but at least the back ends on the carbon bikes are straight. And my tracer is way more composed in the rough than the pre- M9 bikes ever were.

 I believe most of Intense’s aluminum prototypes are welded up still by an old welder from Intense who now runs Stasi Cycles. He welded up the aluminum rear end last year for Gwin to be able to run 27.5 rear tires.

 @jaame: You mean the last two years were he had permanent injuries? That can happen to any pro rider. Ups and downs. Maybee his dominance is over, but I would say a healthy Gwin on a redesigned bike (which hopefully suits him better) is still a big contender.

In the life cycle of a pro downhill racer, he is in the decline phase.

 @jaame: What makes you think so? Just because he isn't French doesn't mean he can't do well every now and then. Wasn't it Clay Porter who wrote off Greg Minnaar back in 2008 or so? He's done decent ever since. Just like Gee and Peaty, he's one of those riders who can be up on time to then crash out or get a mechanical at some point. But it doesn't mean there won't be days where he holds it together and completely smokes the competition. He may still be carrying injuries but if he doesn't, I think he could do well. I mean, 'Murrica and all that. We'll just wait and see. I wouldn't be surprised to see it get all mixed up this season.

 @vinay: I don’t think he will win multiple races in a season again, I don’t think he will win by 5+ seconds again, and I don’t think he will win the overall again. Just like Gee. He won’t either.

I would love Gwin to win the world champs though. He deserves that win as part of his legacy.
