 These videos just don't compare to his RAW videos because the direction doesn't give us an idea of what the trail is actually like. The series of zooms, fast pans, and quick cuts only allow us to see only the trick.

I heard Jackie Chan talk about the difference between American Action film and and his Chinese Kung Fu films; Jackie exhibits an entire action sequence in one take, while American action films cut on every slap and impact to produce the illusion of speed and precision. Witnessing the entire action allows for the "realness" of the display to settle into the minds of an audience.

 exactly my thoughts. I am not a director or a cinematographer. Just a random guy watching videos.I didn't like the angle at all. Either extremely zoom out or zoom in showing the bike etc.Sometimes he was riding so fast that the camera couldn't catch up?or after the trick the camera shows the ground as if it is fallen.....
maybe i'm saying bs but i didn't like it.

 Like the One Shot segment he did for Unreal. That was a massive project, but the result was all-time. Hard to criticize a dude who has given so much and I'm sure we haven't seen the last of this kung fu master.

 the problem is not the editing, its the trail, Its a perfectly manicured, groomed jump trail found in any number of bike parks. Its just not that interesting. Good rider, with loads of skill riding the same line that can be found anywhere. There is no challenge posed by the terrain of the location other than getting there.

 Agreed. This reminded me way too much of the "shaky cam" technique used in lots of action movies, which is mostly a bandaid to cover up the fact that people like Matt Damon aren't actually experts in hand-to-hand combat and martial arts. It gives an illusion of the frantic speed and choas of the moment, while also blurring the finer details.

Problem is, when you have someone who truly is a master, that frantic speed obscures the skills being shown. It alos drove me bonkers how we couldn't see the wheels of his bike for a lot of the clips. Good riding, but unfortunate style of filming.

 I kind of have the same thing with pictures. I'm more into looking at pictures than watching videos. But most of the time when I see a picture of someone just leaving the lip of a jump or drop off, it has typically been cropped such that you can see little of what's ahead of the rider, let alone where the landing is. Somehow this feels claustrophobic to me.

In the context of videos, yes I'm not into this flashy style but I got the impression that the general audience seems to like it. Doesn't only go for this filmmaker here, I thought it is also quite typical for the (generally much appreciated) Clay Porter. I bought "The Tipping Point" for lack of another Earthed video to document the racing season. I couldn't make head nor toe of it. The only longer shots are the ones where there is no riding (interviews, audience screaming etc). The flashing/skipping thing just doesn't work for me. Yes I'm getting old now but this was twelve years ago!

 @Appealingweiner: The cinematic techniques alone do not determine "the goodness" of a film project. But the implementation of those techniques within an edit do.

Lots of creatives fall in love with technology or technical virtuosity rather than how basic elements of design are implemented.

Most people are just complaining about implementation not the techniques even though it may not come off that way.

 @twhart20: Totally, I liked the JC analogy and wasn't in full disagreement with the point. Should've had more emphasis on the "massive effort" of filming that way, as another comment pointed out. I think we see less of it b/c it isn't practical and possibly not even fun to do every shoot that way. But if I had to choose, I'm watching the raw segments over this every day. Like other folks here I was really hoping for a true trail-style edit.

 Totally agree, Semenuk is obviously amazing, but they need to take it easy on the ridiculous editing, just makes me not want to watch. I do anyway though for those corked off flips into a fin, god damn. They could get so much more out of these videos if they werent busy pretending they're cutting edge directors, feels like a waste.

But this is not the video I’m gunna show my non-bike friends. I’ll show them Brandon Semenuk RAW vids. They encapsulate a larger “idea” about mountain biking than these videos do....another debate of course. Love the conversation though.

 Exactly my thoughts (I wouldn’t have had the Jackie Chan analogy). In addition to the lack of sense of scale, the tight cuts and spastic motion serve to give me motion sickness and a headache. I think it’s a disservice to Brandon’s riding and what was most likely epic trail building, but we don’t know that part for sure since we can’t really tell.

 @nrpuk: I suppose. I'm not out there making bike videos specifically nor have I actually filmed and edited an action sports films. However as a Professor of Art and Design, I utilize the comparison of his RAW videos and these videos in my Art Appreciation class when we discuss "Gestalt Theory," a base criteria for good design. I think it's healthy to consider how a video like this fits into a larger history of film, for athletes, armchair enthusiasts, and directors alike.

Sadly I haven’t seen it in a while.
Freeride was what got me into mtb in the early 2000s and it was HUGE back then.
Hell the producing company of the NWD Movies was named Freeride Entertainment, what else do I have to say?

Everyone looked forward to bike companies dropping their newest dedicated Freeride bike.
Nowadays with such capable enduro bikes it seems like there isn’t a market anymore for these bikes.
The lines got blurred and one category had to get swallowed.

I’m guilty of this too, since my latest bike purchase is a Nukeproof Mega 290 equipped with a coil shock, which is more capable than any of the Freeride bikes I had before, while also being able to get up the mountain.
Something unthinkable with most of the bikes I rode before.

Sure, there were attempts before to make Freeride bikes climbable, like the Truvativ Hammerschmidt Gearbox cranks I rode back in the days, but it didn’t make the cut.

 Agreed. Too many shaky quick-takes. Really mutes the impressive riding in much of the video. I'd rather see more clear, intelligible shots of Semenuk ripping and less Stranger Things vibes.

 rapid cuts, out of focus, to much closed in... we could only breed for a couple of seconds when we could actually follow Semenuk riding. In before "it was that the intention of the filmmaker", well, on purpose or not it was crap anyway.

 @brianpark: I was only trying to poke fun of the fact that the industry, and riders of course, have become single-minded on the fact modern geo is the only thing that will make you a 'better' rider. We bike shame ourselves when looking back even a few years ago and ask, 'How did I ride that?'. The reality is it wasn't that bad. I'm all for evolution of the sport but if you think you like a trail rider with middling abilities, you'll probably stay that way.

 Guess spitting on a Semenuk vid is a stupid thing to do, but if everything King Midas touched turned to gold, everything Semenuk touches turns into a slope-style course. I was hoping to see Semenuk shred loam, slay corners, find gaps, etc. Obviously he rides the way he wants to ride, but I'd rather watch a Métailler clip from Squamish than another jump where Semenuk backflips and clicks his heels together like Dorothy.

 I appreciate the hardscape river rocks on the side of jumps. But...builders...maybe next time we could spruce it up just a bit further? Maybe a water feature or two (fountain, pond, etc.), some pops of color with flowers, or an herb/vegetable nook in the gaps between jumps?

 Usual mistakes - jump cuts, too telephoto, rising pans of jumps, lack of airtime context, lack of true contact context, lack of trail sense. Why waste all this time building a trail if you film the rider and their shapes rather than the mountain?

 Watching this video made me appreciate his "one-shot" segment from Unreal with Buffalo Springfield playing in the background.

There is a reason why that video keeps getting shared on social media as opposed to any of the new videos.

 Pretty astounding comment. Using your logic no one should be able to make comments on pretty much anything unless they are professionally involved in the associated industry. i.e. I bought a burger from the local burger shack the other day but i am forbidden to make any comments whether I like it or not because I am not employed as a cook, chef, dishwasher, server, food runner etc. I watched Transformers, the movie but will not give you my thoughts on it as I am not an actor, editor, cameraman, director etc. Its up to the consumer of the product to determine if they like the product or not. These comments are are a reflection of how consumers of the product felt about the product. Pretty sure Rupert and Brandon understand the product of their hard-work might not be universally loved. Furthermore, given their history of solid productions, they will probably take negative feedback as an opportunity to improve or progress their product,

2) it's art (as many have said above); you don't have to like every genre of music either
3) personally, I loved it (yes, even the editing and jump cuts
4) Yeah, i did wonder how the Polaris got home (loved the Knight Rider theory...!)

 This is a wonderful compliment to the beauty and simplicity of the raw videos he‘s done. He’s such a talented athlete who rips in the most innovative ways, on any bike, on any trail or track, drifts his shuttle beast of a UTV up the hill AND competes (and does quite well) in rally car racing! I always look forward to what he will do next.

 instead of everyone shitting on the filming, why don't we just enjoy the talent and style here. everyone's so fast to judge an say what they would prefer filming wise, but can we talk about the fact that this dude is slaying a trail bike like its a slope bike.

 I think most comments about the filming are that they weren't able to catch enough of the riding. Everyone knows what Semenuk can do. It's why there are so many comments. This one, it's hard to see the dude. Literally.

 Well, what‘s bad about saying that the filming males me nauseous? In all honesty, the filming and editing tore down the riding achievement of BS.
I am not fond of slopestyle antics in the woods labeled „trail riding“, nevertheless, I appreciate the talent and effort of the rider!

 Although not the usual style of Semenuk video, I do like the change, its not going to be the best way to see a trail and can be a bit weird sometimes, but it is exciting if you get into it properly, crack on lads, good stuff.

 Agree with many of these comments. Semenuk rides far too well to need special effects. Cut it out in future please. Put your ego to one side and make the clip simply showing Brandon and his fabulous riding technique.

 Always great to see a professional rally car racer try his hand at mountain biking. Not bad. Also, my trail bike is definitely not capable of that kind of riding.

 Semenuk is a once in a generation rider. There won't be someone with his level of steeze for some time, if ever. I feel lucky to see him in his prime............. However this and "First Tracks in Japan" under Ru Walkers direction have been too jerky, frantic and close frame. They really aren't showcasing his skill or style. Its not Art... its just massively hard to watch. Raw 100 was the last one that wasn't headache inducing! Such a shame with what looks like a lot of effort put in.

Next time I see a Brandon edit i want to be pumped to watch it... not wondering how hard its going to be to watch. #firstworldproblems

 Really? I've never seen him ride anything other than an mtb of some sort or a bmx. Maybe you're thinking of Akrigg, Pilgrim or Macaskill, all of whom use very different bikes in their edits.
