Danny Hart has the fist custom bike to break cover for the Mont Sainte Anne World Champs and we're treated to a 20-minute mtb ASMR video of it coming together.

bigquotesA special race calls for a true Dream Build! Every year, fans anticipate the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships – and it’s not just the racing. As is tradition, every rider gets a custom painted bike and we had the chance to go behind the scenes to see what two-time world champion Danny Hart would be getting his hands on in Mont Sainte Anne.Gee Milner

Rumour has it his mechanic measures torque settings up to 1000lbs with his forearms...
  • 5 0
 That's a lot of in-lbs
  • 15 0
In case you didn't know, his name is Scott Mears. Used to race DH world cups few years ago

Dare we say "over-gunned" for the job?
  • 10 3
How did it turn out after 22 minutes? Pretty sure it looked like a DH bike.

For all you Canuks. The Maple Leaf on the top tube should have been painted red. I am just saying if you are going into the details how could that one be missed.
  • 2 1
@dhrracer: As a canuck I'm okay with it being black, but red would have been sick. Overall maybe the coolest paint job I've seen on a bike. Love these vids.

I just spent 22 minutes of my life watching someone paint a bike then someone else put it together, totally facinated by the Labour of love that goes into those bikes. 22 minutes well spent.
  • 4 0
 The painting stage fascinates me
  • 6 0
This is amazing. 22 minute marketing video of somebody painting and building a bike. Who the hell thought that I was going to watch through this?! Well, they were right. Compared to another shred edit that lasts 3 minutes, ain't nobody got time for that.

I am not a fan of unpacking videos on YouTube. Especially for legos. Some of them are run by weird people and contain subliminal message. Like that guy asking for crowd funding, claiming he is a genetic scientist and wants to revive Hitler.

@WAKIdesigns: WTF are you talking about? Are you in the wrong room?

If a woman did that to me, I'd be all like, 'Hey, why don't you stop...dressing me up like a mailman and making me dance for you, while you go and smoke crack in your bedroom and have sex with some guy I don't even know on my dad's bed?'
  • 9 0
 @WAKIdesigns: I think it’s bedtime

@WAKIdesigns: nail on the head dude.

Objectively, one of the most satisfying parts of building or working on your bike is having the right tool or the right parts on hand when you need them. When he busted out that bin full of shiny new housing ferrules, its just like "nice" instead of "oh right, let me go pull that dirty ass one off the old housing that I just tossed into the spider corner."

I related to this so much haha

poor lads only running a Zee shifter like me.
  • 9 0
I bet if he upgraded to Saint he would gain 0.0000172 seconds per kilometer of trail.
  • 4 0
Double up shift not a possibility?
  • 5 0
@jaame: That is probably the reason. I remember reading somewhere that Neko Mulally uses a Zee so he doesn't accidentally hit a double shift when he only wants a single.
  • 1 0
@jaame: exactly what I was thinking. I found myself many times accidentally double shifting on Shimano.
  • 1 0
 @jaame: exactly
  • 1 0
 @mtnbykr05: Hammmmmfisted.
  • 26 1
I wouldn’t kick that bike outa bed for farting up the sheets that’s for sure.
  • 12 0
I'd let it eat crackers in there... And even clean up after it.
  • 22 0
 Such a work of Hart.
  • 14 1
A ZEE shifter???? Did they overspend on the paint?
  • 8 0
Some guys like the feel of the zee shifter more than the saint. I like slx more than XT shifters lol
  • 24 0
zee shifter only shifts one gear per push. saint shifter shifts multiple gears per push.

@ORTOGONAL555: that might be the point... who knows
  • 3 0
@ORTOGONAL555: makes you know what you are doing when things get rowdy

@ORTOGONAL555: you can have that feature just by dremelling one metal tooth down

i'm a little surprised to see him push a pin into the chain. power links have been much more reliable for me...
  • 3 0
Yo anyone know what that raw metal linkage arm thinger is that got bolted on to the non-drive side? Some kind of crazy floating brake mount?

Also, threaded BB installation.... I remember those
  • 4 0
You answered your own question Big Grin www.pinkbike.com/photo/17417495
  • 1 0
@dolface: ah thanks, very cool. I was looking at other pics of the Myst but didn't see the brake linkage anywhere
  • 1 0
@dolface: Has there been any interview with what Hart thinks of it ? Well I guess he likes it or it wouldn't be installed anymore (I think the other guy or guys of the team ditched it) but anyway.
  • 1 0
@Will-narayan: I vaguely remember a mention of it from him or his mechanic (maybe in a Pit Bits slideshow from that other site?) but can't find the link anymore.
  • 3 0
Wow, I enjoyed this video so much. What a passion for the bike. Paint job is amazing!!!!!!! Mechanic is great to see. One of the nicest videos a saw in a long time. Have a nice day!!!!

Remember when we all laughing at Saracen a while back? Not now!
  • 1 0
Even after they won the World Championship with Carpenter and now Hart is doing well* I still wouldn't dream of riding one! I guess I can't shake the image of the Halfords bikes out of my head...

*Almost as well as he was on Mondraker
  • 2 0
@korev: I agree fully, I would not ride a Saracen. But, a factory team level bike is a different baby all together.
  • 1 0
@Radley-Shreddington: I guess after last weekend I have to eat my words Smile
  • 2 0
 @korev: Halfords wins WC!

(english accent) Why are there teeth marks on my grips ???

I spent more time watching that than I will spend watching porn this evening
  • 1 0
 was there a difference?
  • 11 7
 Nothing torqued to spec...
  • 17 1
I’ve never torqued anything in my life and I’m still alive, craziness I tell yea.
  • 3 1
@ryankxf: Sure but you would think at that level, where the smallest details make a difference it would not be over looked....
  • 9 6
Any pro mechanic has their hands more calibrated than any torque wrench you can buy.
  • 6 1
And side cutters for trimming your brake hose? Yikes. Ill let the side cutter use for cables slide, but I find they crush before they cut which isnt ideal. All that said, im sure he has built up hundreds of more bikes than I have and I assume they all hold up well Smile
  • 9 0
@bighit117: Pretty sure a mechanic of that level knows exactly what torque spec feels like. And beyond that... that bike will be apart and back together a couple more times before race day. Fork and shock will get pulled for FOX to service likely before and after practice and qualifying. Brakes will get bled. Every bolt will get rechecked. Etc.
  • 4 2
@ryankxf: I used to think that too. Torqued down the handlebar bolts on my stem until it felt like it should. Went off a 8ft drop next day, handlebars rotated down and under on landing impact. Sent me over the bars into the most spectacular scorpion of my life. I’ve since used a torque wrench on everything.
  • 3 1
@vw4ever: haha sounds brutal! I guess I just have a system that works for me. Or overly aggressive Arnold hands? Your supposed to run that bitch down till she pops then back her out a quarter turn right?
  • 2 2
@vw4ever: also maybe your grip needed a recalibration
  • 3 1
What if torque wrench is a lie.
  • 3 4
Torque specs aren't helpful for these guys. The bike would fall apart mid lap.
  • 2 2
 @nozes: rubbish
  • 2 0
 @ryankxf:
Haha tighten til it strips and back ‘er off a quarter turn! Lol...

Naw, I just got a little too lackadaisical with it, bike bit back. After that it was back to the torque wrench Wink
  • 1 0
@onemanarmy: Indeed, mechanic knows what he's doing. And he's not racing the bike like this. Danny gonna do some changes.
  • 4 0
Maybe this mechanic is really ‘tuned’ to perfection, but the problem is when the ‘kids’ at my local bike shop ALSO think they don’t need to torque anything because they know what 2.5Nm vs. 5Nm feels like.

I torque everything to spec which is something people buying my used bikes appreciate.
  • 1 0
@jeremiahwas: Kids have to learn, you have to do stupid things as a kid. ;-). No I understand what you wanna say. This is only for very experienced mechanics. Maybe with the power dh riders have, they do the torque thing and add a little twist more. Or use some carbon paste. Everybody has his own thing. What's right and what's wrong? When you have fun and the bike is safe you are always a winner!
  • 2 0
@nozes: that's rediculous, it's about repeatable precision, no arm can do that (my arm has off days)
  • 3 0
I thought torque specs were bull for a long time, until I started working on 10,000 dollar bikes. The tolerances are slim on many of those things, and it's easy to over torque and break it, or under torque and have it come loose. Learn from my costly experiences.

Fat Creation ..... amazing . Mech top notch .. Danny top bloke ............ cmon danny

Where is his matching Fox fork and shock digicam decal kit?
  • 5 2
 Fist it real good
  • 4 4
Is it just me, or would anyone else put at least one spacer under the top fork crown to make the fork legs sit nice and flush with the top crown?
  • 3 0
it would raise your ride height by about 1.5 cm....
  • 1 0
 Danny‘s little
  • 3 3
I watched it all, but still think the Intense Factory team M29's look so much better and Jeff did them with rattle cans. ????
  • 1 0
To be honest you can’t knock the quality of finish that the guys at Fat Creation produce, but I think some of it is a little lacking in creativity. Becci does some great airbrushing but the sort of ideas Jeff has from decades in the game produces some incredible designs that take decades to learn. So I totally see your point.

Jasus Danny, don't now prang the frame in practice!
  • 2 0
He cut through those bars so quickly!
  • 1 0
Also. Imagine building a bike measured to the mm?!! That's is crazy. "My new seat is like an inch taller, fuuuuuck it"
  • 1 0
the most fun I’ve had watching paint dry! so much attention too detail, I love it!
  • 2 0
21:18 that rear wheel has a lot of wobbles.

That frame must have some good brakejack.

 Go Danny goooooo

Man he runs his bars so high up there.
  • 1 0
 Talk about labour intensive.

Didn‘t understand that either. Tried it once - sucks

Spoils the clickety and ratchety a bit
