The GoPro Hero 9 camera has been launched just 11 months after the Hero 8 was unveiled with a pack of new features and upgrades.
The GoPro Hero 9 will now shoot in 5K video, which is the highest resolution we've seen yet in a GoPro camera however it can also record in 4K, 2.7K, 1440p and 1080p. The camera can also capture up to 8x slow mo, or 240 fps. The camera now has a front screen as well as a rear screen, which GoPro says will help capture selfie angles. There's also a removable lens and the standard lens can be replaced by GoPro's Max Lens that widens the Field of View to 155° and has greater stabilization features.
The rest of the camera has seen a bunch of updates including 30% increased battery life, upgrades to Timewarp and Hypersmooth, more live streaming options and Hindisght - the ability to capture 30 seconds before you press the shutter.
The camera is available now and comes with a 32gb memory card. The camera costs $449.99 / £429.99 / AU$699.95, which is a bit more expensive than the Hero 8 Black's launch price. The camera can be purchased more cheaply alongside a GoPro subscription that gives unlimited cloud storage and a camera replacement service.

"Hey honey, check out this rock drop, whoa so steep, pretty cool huh"
"that's nice...did you mow the lawn"
In terms of price, sub-£500 for an amazing bit of kit is really quite incredible. And when you look at what people are paying for other things in this industry, you'd have to assume that there's plenty of people who'd be happy to pay up...
...if they could get good use out of it. I'm the same as you, had a gopro but absolutely did not get the best use out of it. Make it more user friendly so people with limited knowledge/patience can get epic looking videos with ease and i think they'd welcome many jaded former owners back into their market (as well as newcomers).
I will shoulder part of the blame and accept that my mediocre footage had a lot to do with my mediocre riding (snow and dirt). You gotta give them something to work with i suppose.
Though, others are right about saving memories or fails. And I guess some of the videos I do save are probably just for future use so I can say "See! I used to be an okay rider!"
When I see vids of guys like Sam Hill do a hot lap and almost get the KOM on a trail he's only seen once in person, no vid, it points to how valuable trail reading acumen is. None of us are Sam, of course...
It's a balance obviously, many of the pro enduro guys do it but they are also ace at riding trails blind too.
@Bro-LanDog:
I tried to build on his idea and will now use my GoPro to document the biodiversity in the Amazon on my daily rides there (as this too may one day have disappeared completely). It gives me a warm feeling inside to know that I will now be able to do something tangible and meaningful for mankind, not to speak my young son! He will inherit a better place. All thanks to GoPro.
I used other editors before, but i'm not a pro, and spent some time just for learning how to edit simple videos.
Just gave up.
And then i found the QUIK, by gopro. I just record my rides, choose some highlights moments, connect my phone to gopro, and QUIK automatically edit a nice video for you to share with your friends or family. Nothing professional, but the time you save from editing...you can use it on the bike
@gcrider I DID run over a big brown snake in the You Yangs once! I looked away from the fire road to say something, looked back, and there was a 150cm brown snake slithering across in front of me. You bet I screamed haha. Thankfully the snake seemed okay, it flinched and slithered into the bushes. I hope it's still around haunting the park.
"yeah, but why not stick to the standard and improve upon the 4k technology?"
".... but this one goes to 5k."
As it was mentioned already 4-5k is also very nice for framing and downsampling.
Personally I don't miss the days when most (consumer grade) cameras could only record low bitrate 1080p.
In the terms and conditions, it mentions that GoPro has unlimited rights to use any of your own footage however they choose.
That's an insane loss of your legal control of your own photographed footage, and an insane breach of privacy.
Even though we're kind of getting used to stuff similar, this is pretty absurd.
Even if the backup has some value, that's just a disgusting tradeoff of privacy and ownership. Not that almost any footage will be of value to them, except in selling all the possible marketing information from your footage and locations they can, still--. I'm going to try to be videoing without 1984ing, and so no subscription. There is going to be some big backlash to all this tracking and privacy loss accepted insanity.
Imagine a rental contract would write "in this house you're allowed to murder people", do you really think the judge will say "okay, then it's fine, you go free."?
The law always stands above contracts.
"Why?"
"I don't know. Why not?"
When I ordered my Hero 7, I traded in a Hero 5 to get £100 off. They still charged me full price, only taking off the discount when I contacted them to enquire where the camera was.....they’d sent it to Canada....I’m in the UK!
They sent me a free chesty mount by way of apology and sent that to Kazakhstan!!
Yes, it’s true.
Also, the Hero 8 is not better than the 7 due to the same processor. The 9 has the same. You can guess how the video quality is going to be like. Get the 7 at a huge discount and be happy.
My Hero 7 Black has great video quality...when it works. Customer service is horrible. I won’t be buying anything else from GoPro.
Love their cameras, actually I'm not using for mtb at all, however surfing, ski, divin, kids - best product to capture moments;
-Better low light performance. Recording in the woods on even a mildly cloudy day (Hero8 Black) still yields poor quality and lowers ability of stabilization to perform properly.
-Higher recording bitrates. With that compression algorithm they're using we'll need to be in the 200mbits/sec range to maintain more detail in the images.
What I’m mad about is that they advertise the Hero 8 with the media mod and never manage to produce it. Now there’s a new camera already.
Decent! Yeah I’m rocking the 2018 Hero and need some hypersmooth in my life
"Damn boii here we go again!"
We r a bit sht @ tht sort of thing...
