Video: Hometown Hero Marcelo Gutierrez's Winning Run at the Manizales Urban Downhill

Jan 17, 2019 at 3:06
by James Smurthwaite

Watch Marcelo Gutierrez tear up the streets of his hometown in the latest stop of the City Downhill World Tour in Manizales, Colombia, last weekend.

Marcelo has historically been unbeatable on these streets and it's actually his second victory of the year in the city as he also won the preliminary EWS stage here before the race moved into the dense jungles. It's clear he's a firm fan favourite as well as the reaction he receives is deafening.

Marcelo won with a race time of 1:58.31 with Camilo Sanchez finishing second and Madison Saracen's Alex Marin third.

A full replay is available in Spanish, here, start watching at around 1:25 for Marcelo's run.

That's some crazy stuff in there. Sure would hate wreck on a flight of stairs.

There was a whole lotta uphill in that downhill!

Agree, you'd think an enduro bike with dropper would be weapon of choice

@sewer-rat: nah too short of sprints, too short of track, and too many big hits. stand up and crush the pedal.

@SnowshoeRider4Life: Big hits?? So what about Sam at worlds on his Mega or was that a flow track?? Sprints save time, and a more agile bike would’ve been quicker on the tech sections than that bus

 @sewer-rat: alot longer track.

Makes it look so smooth and flowy when in reality I would've clipped my bars/pedals/head several times

Really wondering why these aren't more common in urban DH: www.pinkbike.com/news/avs-racing-handguards-review-2017.html

Racing in your hometown adds +15% performance instantly...FACT.

Most of this type of race occur in Mexico, and this 1 in Colombia. Any held in Europe or US/Canada?

BC where I live is very mountainous but I can't think of many places where this would work. North Van? Trail?

I've seen some similar races in Europe, where shopping centres, underground tube stations and escalators are used. There's also one held in Sheffield, UK every year; I think it's called the Steel City DH.

There was the Lisbon Downtown in Portugal. Was pretty epic

i don't think anywhere in Canada or the US has the type of density on a slope in an urban area where this would work, only place that comes to mind is san fransisco, but even there the city is laid out in grid, would be tough to make a course that isn't just a straight shot down a big hill.

north van you could have one if you started somewhere like braemar where there are a lot of those "alleys" that have staircases between grass paths.

nelson you could absolutely have one. big hotspot for urban skiing/snowboarding spots and I can think of a few lines you could build for bikes through there.

@simirving: Steel city DH is held at an outdoor venue (Grenoside woods) - not Urban DH at all

They’ve run an Urban DH race in Briancon - a small medieval town in the French Alps...

@Thor44: Oh, well. I must be thinking of something else.

Probably never happen in the US because we have too many rules and lawyers and nimbys and.......forget it.

....well right after I typed the above message at an advert popped up telling me I'll be able to buy a street-legal Mustang GT500 in 2020 with 750+ horsepower and a 10 speed semiautomatic gearbox right off the showroom floor.

@pinkharo They did a small one in Butte Montana during Evel Knievel days in the past. It was pretty fun (not nearly as rowdy as the Columbia or Mexico races) but sadly I don't think Evel Knievel days gets funded anymore.

@arrowheadrush: Many many years ago Nanaimo had the Adventure Games, not exactly the same type of course, but they technically had an urban downhill, the finish line was in front of the City Hall. See pics here, www.coastalbc.com/cycle/mbnanaimoadventuregames.htm

@endlessblockades: Riding bikes is super dangerous and we can't have anybody ride them anywhere that they might get hurt in any way, shape, or form... anyway this baby goes 110 in 3rd.

@simirving: They run one in Falmouth , conquer the cliffs and also one in cardiff i think

VI university is on a steep hill in Nanaimo, always thought it'd be sick spot for an urban downhill race as I hiked my ass up from the pub at the bottom to my class at the top

They did one in Scarborough, UK years ago - www.youtube.com/watch?v=cir-T89YSm8

@MBroady: Awesome to see video from that far back (200Cool to see how much the bikes have evolved. Those bars look so narrow by comparison.

Just found an urban DH in Grasse, Fra. Remy and Tomas Slavik riding super fast here. Watch 4 the near impact with an elderly lady at the 26 sec mark: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mc2bmfAVszo

@jnrafael: Found this - Steve Peat in 2010. Spoiler alert. He goes down hard at the 2min mark.

That must have been incredible. Did they run them down the hillside by Barrio Alto? Was a bitch to climb after a few drinks, I can only imagine what it would be like going DH at speed!

The streets of Granada, Spain would be perfect. The hillside of barrio Mirador are just as steep and twisting and the town is beautiful.

Why do I find myself holding my breath when I watch urban downhill videos?
  • 2 0
because they are insane and a big crash in the wrong spot would be borderline certain death.

I love how every where was packed with people! Well, except the school in the beginning, apparently no one wants to be there if they dont have to ! haah

 some very narrow technical staff

You shouldn’t be able to say if your staff is narrow.

The 0:40 - 0:43 part is the craziest. The precision and risk if you get it wrong...

Marcelo Gutierrez is a lowkey legend this guy has been killing it forever

So glad that I live on the North Shore. Great trails and away from the crowds, except on the weekends. To me this is just a novelty spectator sport, I can't imagine that it is very enjoyable to ride concrete stairs.

Looked like was more up hill than downhill on that coarse?
