Kate Courtney heads up the first ever Sound of Speed for an XC athlete as she shreds up, down and along in Sedona.

bigquotesWatch Kate Courtney put the pre-season power (and pancakes) down in the latest Sound of Speed! The 2018 UCI XCO World Champ tests out her new bike set-up from Scott Factory Racing in the Sedona sun while channeling her inner spirit animal - the shark, taking a bite out of it’s rugged terrain in the process.Red Bull

I am sure SRAM loves that you can hear the brake pads squealing in every other take...
  • + 32
@steflund Bro, that's the sound of modulation. You know, the thing that ONLY SRAM brakes have.
  • + 25
but that's how you know it's a SRAM brake

@pdxkid: not sure if serious. But statement not true.

It is an issue that can be corrected quite easily. I have always had Avid or SRAM brakes since the Juicy 7s and never had a problem with squealing.
  • + 89
@tacklingdummy: Yeah just a little WD-40 and the squeaking is gone
  • + 34
Squealing brakes are there to inspire you to pick your spots, brake short and hard and let go of them for the rest.
  • + 0
@taquitos: Not my solution but go for it. Lol.
  • + 15
Brakes are overrated, all they do really is slow you down. In my 27 years visiting Sedona, Ive never seen a Saguaro cactus there...
  • + 23
@Klainmeister: It's like how Harley Davidson patented their sound, which is actually just a poor engine timing arrangement...
  • + 0
 ha!! awesome
  • + 1
@owlie: I was just there two weeks ago and I concur. THE JIG IS UP RED BULL!!!
  • + 7
I think those brakes are just fine. They're just a bit wet from the snow and have a trace of that Sedona sludge on 'em.
  • + 4
@Klainmeister: there's a great quote out there from Emilio Bugatti-when asked why his cars still had cable brakes when others had switched to hydraulics? he said" I build my cars to go, not to stop!"
  • + 1
Why does everyone hate SRAM brakes so much? They are good. Just have to do a good bleed on them. Wink
  • + 2
My bike sounds just like the pros' bikes. Thanks Sram!
  • + 2
It's because they're wet. And same for Shimano
  • + 1
 @pdxkid: someone's never used codes......
  • + 1
 The sound of freedom Wink
  • + 3
@owlie: I came to comments to say this too. Some "creative" editing there.
  • + 1
 That's funny!!
  • + 59
Damn she's fast, rode from Tucson in the first shot all the way to Sedona!
  • + 9
She even stopped to get a cyrstal palm reading and a shamanic spirit retrival from a certified middle aged white woman who comes from the gentrified tribe of suburbia.
  • + 1
Haha I noticed that as well.
  • + 47
Still, she descends faster than most PB commenters on their super long, low, slack enduro sleds - after climbing all the rest of the trails faster too. #itsnotthebike

@scary1: the 90% / 10% rule - so yes, the bike is about 10% of the equation but since Kate is 200% stronger than any of us it's doesn't really matter
  • + 20
@Grmasterd: If I cloned myself and my clone rode a fully rigid Nishiki from 1994 and I was on my current bike Id kick my ass. The bike matters alot more than %10.

At first glance I read it as #titsonthebike
  • + 2
@Tmackstab: What about you from '94 on your current bike versus you from now on your Nishiki?
  • + 2
@markinator: I'm older now so riding a fully rigid would likely kill me from the sheer rattling of old bones.
  • + 1
If this was a roadie forum I'd be obliged to cite Rule 4 at this point Big Grin ..
"Rule 4: It is, absolutely, without question, unequivocally, about the bike. Anyone who says otherwise is obviously a t***waffle." velominati.com/content/Reader%20Galleries/21285889226/lance-armstrong-it-s-not-about-the-bike-my-journey-back-to-life-cd-audio-book-2241-p.jpg

 @Grmasterd: I look pretty fast in 3-5 second edits,too.
  • + 1
@Tmackstab: duh - 10% bike means current bikes in this pissing contest, and ya you would get destroyed by her on same bike.
  • + 1
@brentkratz: finally someone with some sense

How come when she takes a sip after putting out maximum effort she is like "ahhh" but when I do it I feel like I am water boarding myself?
  • + 6
Taking sips at maximum effort does feel like water boarding. Try smaller sips.
  • + 1
She also doesn't seem to accidentally breathe in the water and have a massive coughing fit. Not that that happens to me either.
  • + 21
I said hi to Kate at the Sea Otter. She is tiny and I probably appeared to be a creep. Sorry. Kate - best of luck this season!
  • + 61
You are appearing to be a creep right now..
  • + 45
 @between: This is my way.
  • - 1
@endlessblockades: why did you mention that she is tiny ? if you had omitted that part, you would have not seemed to be a creep.
  • + 22
@DGWW: Because I was quite surprised by her diminutive stature in person and figured mentioning any metric whatsoever about a person would be worth a DV or 2. Her World Champion grit and power far exceed her height.

I've lived in SF for 30+ years where we are told to Celebrate Diversity! (while never pointing out that people are different from one another in ANY WAY).

  • + 2
@DGWW: Her weight to power ratio is why she can destroy most of us on an XC bike.
  • + 2
Not as creepy as that dude with pedo stache that's always with her.
  • + 15
If the sound of people eating/drinking ever makes it into these edits I'm OUT. As soon as I saw that pancake bite go in her mouth I was like, NO GOD NO. Luckily it cut to riding quickly.

I remember when she was here in Tucson. Definitely the coolest XC rider having two first names this side of the pond.

I love that she posted this whoopsie outtake on IG:

My guess is that she is going to be quite competitive this year. The force is strong with this one.
  • + 1
When were they in Sedona? Must have been in production for a looooonggggg time, there hasn't been snow on the ground on the trails here since december.
  • + 1
There was snow right before the mtb festival in March.
  • + 1
@redbull: *its rugged terrain. spelling as squeaky as SRAM rotors.

Lol i did some of those trails in full face helmet and much slower. Go destroy the field Kate!
  • + 2
I am bummed she stood me up at marathon nats to go to solothurn for the swiss cup. Frown
