Video: Nukeproof Releases Raw Worx Edition of Mega 290

by James Smurthwaite

Last year, Nukeproof first launched their WORX series. Based on race bikes and released in limited runs, these were bikes that Nukeproof claime are designed to, "push the boundaries of convention". The first one we saw was a near perfect replica of the carbon Mega 275 in green and gold that Sam Hill piloted to a 6th in the downhill World Championships and the 2017 EWS overall. Now Nukeproof have released another WORX model, this time based on the Mega 290 platform.

Nukeproof are calling this the, "biggest travel, hardest hitting Mega 290" they have ever produced and it will be limited to just 50 models. The biggest difference over the standard 290 is a 170mm Rockshox Lyrik Ultimate fork (the standard bike uses 160mm), which not only ups the travel but will also give a slacker front end for a bike that will no doubt monster truck through rough terrain.

The rest of the bike is specced to mimic the race bikes of Nukeproof's EWS team featuring Sram, Rockshox, MRP, Nukeproof and Michelin components.

The raw finish was inspired by the original Mega, first released in 2012 to take on the Megavalanche race. Take a look at Team Manager, Nigel Page, riding his on the EWS tracks in Maderia this weekend in the video above, unfortunately an incident with a car on a transition took him out of the race itself. Please note Nigel bike is fitted with none stock wheels and tyres.

More Info

RockShox's red springs and fork lowers match this build well

The Nukeproof Mega has been a 150mm platform since it started out life in 2012 but the 29 inch wheels were only added to the range in late 2-15.

Always rad times ahead when Pagey is involved.

There's no hiding the welds on a raw frame, they have to be spot on.

29 inch wheels, now the choice of Sam Hill too.

The medium will be supplied with a 400lbs spring, large - 450lbs, and XL - 500lbs.

The bike can be pre-oredered now and will be released through Nukeproof dealers in June for £4,499 ($5,866.27USD).

Why can't bikes like this just exist normally?
  • + 53
So they can charge more money for it.
  • + 6
Ugh I know right so nice but so limited Frown
  • + 5
@llarrggee: £4,499 doesn't seem like more money to me, seems about right Smile
  • + 5
Canfield did and would if they get moving forward again
  • + 40
not saying never in the future, we just need to see how this goes down prior to committing to anything.
  • + 15
 Commencal brushed models?
  • + 1
@ElHeffe Think you need to see this Razz
  • + 9
Commencal tends to offer raw alloy models on their entire lineup. Also, raw models are less common because the frame can't have imperfections that would otherwise be covered by paint.
  • + 5
@keatonostheguy: It shouldn't be normal for a bike to not have a water bottle holder.
  • + 4
@Scotj009: It's priced £500 less than a carbon RS spec, so actually it doesn't appear they've charged a premium at all (slightly ridiculous statement for a £4.5k bike IMO, but that's me)
  • - 2
@PeaFunk: interesting that they charge more for a frame without paint than one with paint.
  • + 2
@Bflutz625: except... it is with paint... it is called clear coat and it is not an easy feat since alu tends to oxidize and look grey and dull. It wasn’t fairies who took away marks after welding either
  • + 0
@WAKIdesigns: I work in the automotive industry. I know what clear coat is. Painted metal is usually covered in a clear coat on bikes as decals are put on over the paint but under the clear coat so they don't peel.
  • + 0
@Bflutz625: then your first post is a mystery to me... how come then you don’t get that raw is harder to get to look good and last than regular paint we see on most bikes? I had a clear coated raw frame and it greyed out within a year. I’ve seen painted frames, no older than 3 years peeling off in big chips as if someone applied paint remover to them. You are oversimplifying things greatly for the sake of coming out As someone uncovering a scam...
  • + 2
@WAKIdesigns: anecdote. Painted frames require two applications of a coatings. Raw frames only need some light sanding around the welds to remove the heat affected areas and a GOOD application of clear coat. Should be around the same for each.
  • + 4
Because this ass-backwards industry would rather supply plastic bikes for triple the cost to it's sheep then limit the production and availability of metal bikes.

It's the non-recyclable, $10,000 plastic bikes that no average consumer can possibly find a single benefit of owning one that should be the limited edition runs.
  • - 2
@Bflutz625: we engineers tend to be rather bad at making money, that’s all I can tell you... Smile
  • + 2
@llarrggee: actually YT was bottom dollar given the specs, this one instead would cost more than the nornal line up
  • + 4
@Nukeproofinternational: More brushed alloy frame in the future please!!
  • + 1
 @WAKIdesigns: We love you too.

Im ok thanks for asking people that have. This bike rides so nice, was really looking forward to racing it last weekend in Madeira but unfortunately some idiot open his car door just as I was riding past on the way to stage 2 in practice. Got taken out big style. Hands a bit messed up but I'll live to ride another day. Cheers Nigel
  • + 2
glad you're not seriously injured...happened to me today, just scratched up a bit even though I was wearing a tank top and sandals...went way over the bars and just by clipping my my handlebar barely...felt bad for the guy though scratched the F@$# outta his bimmer!
  • + 2
@rcrdrvr: Cheer mate, yeah I hit the deck pretty hard and fast! Glad your ok too. Scary shit....
  • + 1
 PAGEY YOU'RE A LEGEND!
  • + 1
@jaame: haha no legend but cheers mate :-)
  • + 38
 Always go raw
  • + 21
YT and Nukeproof, I appreciate the effort but do bikes like this have to be limited editions only?
  • + 4
Exactly. That raw Capra last year that was 275 only with the coil shock... I would totally get on of those in 29er.
  • + 2
Because they don't want to have sitting in a warehouse only to sell them at a deep discount...
  • - 3
Sitting in a warehouse like all the $10k plastic bikes that don't sell and end up in the ocean and/or landfills?
  • + 7
@NYShred: lol so your saying retailers/ manufacturers through bikes into the ocean instead of selling them at a discount....lolll
  • + 1
@NYShred: they sell.. when the price goes down, there's always a willing buyer...
  • + 1
 Sign me up
  • + 3
@NYShred: wait, do you think carbon fiber goes bad like milk, so they have to throw them out after the expiration date?
  • + 14
Way nicer than any plastic bike.
  • + 7
I've got a used Lung and a half pickled kidney if anyone wants to buy them. That bike is pure filth..
  • + 1
yup...I def want, but my wife nearly divorced me for the 2850 I spent used...best bike ever though...2017 reign with about an extra 2500 in better parts than stock! But yeah...that thing is a beaut, and I'll be checking the ads for one in a couple of yrs...cheers!
  • + 8
 What's up with Nigel?
Hope everything's ok
  • + 18
i can confirm he is alive and ok, just a little beat up
  • + 8
 Nice welds
  • + 2
@Nukeproofinternational Any possibility of a US demo tour? I saw something with DVO but no official NP tour. Been wanting to ride a Mega for a while now as I'm looking for a smash-through-stuff bike along with the Scout to round out the quiver but no shop (that I know of) in southern california or Southwestern US carries your line. I suspect the Mega might be ace for that terrain...
  • + 3
There is a 40 stop tour with DVO and Smart Cycle Services if you check their website. They have a fleet of mega 275/ 290 and Scout 275/ 290.
  • + 1
@Nukeproofinternational: Sweet! Thanks! I'll have to get in touch with them.
  • + 6
I always called that Scotch-brite finish.
  • + 6
We've got a bright scotch here people
  • + 4
Oh my goodness THOSE WELDS! THAT BIKE!!!! Drool Drool Drool Fab Cool
  • + 4
So that's why there was all this fuss about Sam Hill racing a 29er on the weekend....there was a new bike to sell on Monday!
  • + 19
if only we could influence Mr Hill like that... Unless he reads my mind and is actually a marketing genius (i don't put that past him) that was pure pot luck and his decision to try a 290!
  • + 3
@Nukeproofinternational: Sam Hill is a genius :-) Nuke Proof is on my short list of brands for my next bike.
  • + 12
Race on Sunday, sell on Monday!
  • + 2
 I’ve a question for @nukeproofinternational, this mega 290 has 150mm of travel.
Sam Hill’s yellow mega 290 has 160mm of travel, it’s a new frame?
And also can I buy a yellow mega the next year?
Thanx
  • + 2
Sam's Mega 290 has the same 150mm travel it was a mistake from the painter as it was hand painted.
Not sure about the 20/20 colour options yet.
  • + 3
My 30" inseam says no, but a Southeast Asian femur extension operation says yes!!!
  • + 5
 Love the raw Alloy look.
  • + 0
I read the specs from the NP website and it says:
- a 200mm rotor front, whereas my eyes see a 180mm
- a 10-50T 12spd cassette, which is not obvious on the picture
- an actual 30T chainring... which is a bit small for such a range

and: ``Edition limited to a run of just 50 bikes worldwide``...WHY??!!!

Sometimes I wonder...
  • + 2
This one is my bike Franzzz and I like a 180 rotor on the front and for me the 30t front chainring is spot on. Cheers Nigel
  • + 2
2014 Altitude... But meaner, and possibly even hotter. Yes please! If I had the money, I'd find a way to the UK to throw it at your face! I want!
  • + 3
At least it doesn`t burn the eyes like the yellow/purple ugliness that Sam Hill is riding...
  • + 2
Had the opportunity to see that same bike on flesh, and Damm what a steeedd just beautiful!
  • + 3
WTF is that song!?! Needs a sound off warning
  • + 4
 Raw never goes wrong
  • + 3
Waiting for the official Dissent Release
  • + 3
Hmm, quite a tight budget on the soundtrack I'd say...
  • + 3
 an absolutely BEAUTIFUL bike !
  • + 1
Not sure what it says about my industry bandwagoning when I jumped to see whether it was a mullet bike...
  • + 2
Can’t wait for mine, delivery date?
  • + 1
 June, date is TBC
  • + 1
@Nukeproofinternational: when can we expect to see the dissent or pulse for sale?
  • + 1
@Nukeproofinternational: no worries, one point, 500lb spring for will be too heavy as I'm tall but quite light.
Any chance of a swap out before it leaves you guys to my bike shop if they contact you?

Big thanks
  • + 2
