Video: Local Riders on Edge After a Spate of Armed Bike Jackings in Berkeley

Apr 19, 2021 at 3:07
by James Smurthwaite

Riders in Berkeley, California are deeply concerned after a string of armed bike thefts on a popular cycling route.

The latest robbery took place on April 10 when a Transition Spur was taken from a rider on Grizzly Peak Boulevard. This is the fourth confirmed robbery but apparently there have been other attempted thefts on the same road.

The perpetrators are using their vehicles to drive lone cyclists off the road and then are approaching them with guns or knives to take their bikes. If the robberies are connected, the thieves seem to be using different vehicles in different attacks. In the first attack, The Berkleyside reports that, a cyclist was "run off the road … by two men in a grey VW or Toyota sedan", however, following the April 10 attack, UCPD are looking for a black or green Volkswagen or Volvo with California license plate number 5DJK736.

A cyclist has described what she suspects was an attempted robbery to The Berkleyside. She said "I was riding up Grizzly Peak toward Tilden, about a quarter-mile uphill from Fish Ranch, when suddenly a small black car tried to run me off the road by veering right and stopping abruptly right in front of me,” she told Berkeleyside. “A black SUV was right behind it, effectively boxing me in (no escape route as there was no shoulder in that spot). Fortunately, both cars took off quickly (leaving me unharmed), and I am not sure if it was because other cyclists were coming up the hill in the distance.”

As shown in the above report from CBS, local riders are increasingly concerned by the attacks. Lone riding has become more common during the pandemic and the slow speed of cyclists riding uphill makes them more vulnerable to attacks. Cyclists are urged to carry personal belongings in pockets rather than in frame bags and ride a less expensive bike if they have one. Police advise cyclists not to ride alone and instead ride with a large group or at least with one other person.

Several law enforcement agencies are responding to and investigating crimes in the area. We will update this story with more news as it comes in.

@vemegen: or handlebar end shotgun with remote trigger.

But seriously though, I think carrying on a bike might help with animals, but would likely just escalate a human/robber to shoot you first and then take your bike. I would gladly give them my bike rather than draw on them...

@Upduro: Nice, an ad hominem attack to show how woke/open you are. Not impressed. There is but one race, and it's the rat race, and all we humans are in it. Competency knows no sex or race, nor does hatred, and in that is true equality as we see our fellow humankind as being equal while celebrating differences.

  • 8 6
@Upduro: Eh, I didn't see the comment that got him banned but most of his recent comments don't see to be racist...just hugely misguided. The big crusade seems to be about affirmative action. There's legitimate concerns about affirmative action being exactly what it's aiming to solve which is racially discriminating. There are definitely quotas and I personally know of people denying jobs because the applicant was not a minority. Assuming he reads this, the problem is if you don't actively put your hand on the scale to make things equitable then you'll just keep piling on a bunch of rich, old, white folks and nothing will change. There seems to be an unusually odd mix of far right and far left on this site today. I just want to be clear though; I think he's an idiot and I doubt being in the state ranked 46th in education didn't help

@ryan77777: I was trying to make a justification, or differentiate between what I see as a semi-rational justification for carrying on a ride (cougars), and one that isn't (not getting shot or having your bike stolen at gunpoint). I personally don't even own a handgun, so I am not that person, but I do understand why people may want to have them. I have encountered many Cougars over the years here in Idaho. Two at the same time got within 30 ft of me and a friend. Others about 100 ft away. None of these while I was on a bike. But, I have had enough encounters to consider having a handgun for backpacking. I do think that is your best chance if they decide they want to snack on you. I still wouldnt carry on a ride...

And they sure as hell don't want anyone defending themselves with toxic masculinity or whatever they want to label it. Per them you will be appropriately handled by the government when they defund the police.

You need to have it concealed in your jersey pocket so you can shoot out their tires while they try to drive off and escape. The last laugh will be on them as they try to ride your bike to freedom and discover they cant pedal your clip in pedals.

Now that everything's pretty much back to normal, the citizens outnumber the jackers. Of course if no concealed carry then you could just train up in some unpronounceable martial art and de-arm your attacker then pistol whip them upside the noggin' before waiting on the local constabulary.

Now onto the wildlife, when we speak of trail cougars, are these lonely older women looking for a ride? Where are these trails again? Got any pichters?

@Ieazo: concealed carry is definitely a thing here. But, I would still rather file an insurance claim and wait for a new bike rather than increase the odds of anyone getting shot. A bike is not worth a life, even if I was well trained with whatever techniques might allow me to apprehend the criminal, I would still let them have the bike. 2 guns always increase the risk of you or them getting shot, and I am comfortable enough with my manhood and rights to be able to let the bike go without possible escalation or injury. I have a wife and getting home to her safely takes top priority.
  • 3 2
@Rokcore: No love for LEOs. Many of he 'Police' we have come to accept as a normal part of 'Society' are just slave-catchers for the rich and the for-profit prison system..
  • 1 0
@takeiteasyridehard: I hear you, and absolutely get what you are saying but I work hard to be able to enjoy the things I invest my time and money into, no scumbag will be removing any part of that from me. Why not let them take the bike and then put them down once they have dropped their guard, thinking they have successfully pulled of another robbery? Very little in the way of specialist skills needed other than a calm head.
  • 1 0
@Ieazo: I am torn on how to answer and feel a bit dissonant about this topic. Letting them go probably encourages them to try it on more people, and increases the risk to others...that my biggest motive to stop them. But every situation is different. While it's easy to say you could easily "put them down" while their guard is down...I think every situation is different. If I had a gun and felt my chances were good enough, I might. But realistically I wont be in that situation because I dont feel the threat is large enough to warrant me carrying on my rides at this point. If I were in a different community, maybe things would be different. I dont have enough motivation/opportunity to be a vigilante where I live. I also feel that everyone has the ability to redeem themselves if filtered through the right channels. I might be more inclined to somehow trace them and get them into the system for treatment and mental recovery. It takes a lot of evil for me to want to end a life. People often fall into dark places from things out of their control, and taking a life would be an extreme reaction for me.
  • 1 0
@takeiteasyridehard: I'm not suggesting they be killed unless there was a threat to life, restrained/incapacitated until law enforcement are on scene. I guess targets are more likely to be lone riders so perhaps special training in order to gain control of a situation involving more than one attacker may well be a requirement. Remembering I live in a country where there is comparatively a miniscule amount of gun crime, it's easy to sit here behind the screen and apply logic whilst the reality is far different.
From my perspective it is about stopping an unacceptable pattern of behaviour, there can't simply be no fear of repercussion or even reprisal which there becomes when no-one does anything, the frequency of muggings increases and nobody feels safe.
In my opinion that is when, often ill-thought-out, vigilante justice becomes an issue as frustration and fear build within the local riding community to the point that traps are laid, perpetrators are hunted by wannabe hero's and when that occurs it is unlikely to be a happy ending for any party involved.

It is however an interesting topic for discussion. Take it easy and happy riding....didn't even mean that, sorry.
  • 1 0
@Ieazo: isn't there a bike company in Europe that has the ability to track their bikes if stolen. And they guarantee they will get your bike back.

Why not just let a few bugged bikes get stolen. Police then track them right to the bike.
  • 2 0
@fabwizard: of course sting operations could take a few perps out, and even recover some stolen property.

But remember, de-fund police?
  • 1 0
@gerhards: I mean that's actual police work though...killing unarmed civilians shouldn't even be a side hobby. No one is arguing that police are unnecessary but maybe they don't need a giant budget for recycled military tech and impunity from doing whatever the hell they want to do. People are afraid to call 911 in fear of getting shot / killed and that is a serious problem with how the police operates.

Watch your town councils and elected leaders carefully!

@mi-bike: oh, I didn't sleep great last night....off to end the ski season!
  • 21 6
@Bushmaster123: yes, many native Idahoans are negatively impacted by the drastic and unsustainable grown in property values. Those on fixed incomes have seen property taxes double (or more) in the last decade due to the increase. Kids who grew up here will never own a home as wages have not kept pace with the rise in the price of an average home.

And yes, the issues above are disproportionately driven by former residents of a particular west coast state.
  • 9 5
@Bushmaster123: Yes, I don't care about my property values to be honest. At least not to the extent that you think I would. I care much more than none of my friends can buy houses, the trails are super crowded, people are ruder, etc. And no, not everyone in Idaho "hates liberalism." Maybe lay off the generalizations. Boise is plenty liberal.
  • 9 11
@HB208: Value Adjustment = Tax Adjustment, some people care. And yes, most people hate the current state of liberalism.
  • 22 6
@TrailBaws: Value adjustment from a shit ton of Californians means my property taxes have doubled in three years. I care more about an affordable place to live than whether my individual house has gone up. Property values only matter to the extent that you want to move out of the area, which I don't want to do.

"And yes, most people hate the current state of liberalism." Lol, ok, is that why the GOP just lost the presidency and the Senate?
  • 21 2
@TrailBaws: Lots of conservative Californians move to Idaho and demand that long time Idahoans like me and my wife believe in "conservative values." Which is funny, because they also preach that people shouldn't take their politics with them when they move states.

  • 16 14
@Bushmaster123: Nothing wrong with being from California, it's a beautiful state with many, many amazing people. My family moved to Utah from there! My concern here in southern Utah is that the values that made California unlivable at present are going to arise elsewhere, it sounds like you share that perspective. It's not a political thing for me, it's simply that leftist ideology destroys what it touches and why we don't throw it out the same we do fascism is either insane or evil. Perhaps both.
  • 5 2
@wasea04: My personal experience in Idaho has been that all of the most conservative Californians are moving here. Honestly, the Q Anon, anti-vax conservatives. Also a lot of outdoorsy people, but our politics have been progressively getting crazier over time. The influx of people has certainly not turned Idaho blue by any means.
  • 23 5
@TrailBaws: Its such an intellectually lazy take to say "both sides BAD." Why dont you ask a bit more deeply about what exactly is bad about the two parties. Yes, both sides are deeply entwined in the lobby industry, in "dark money" PACs, and the revolving door of DC politics.

On one side you have a group that fundamentally believes that wealth redistribution via taxation is a viable way to increase the equality of life experience in this country. There are economic arguments for and against this, but it is a strategy that has been successful in other places, and unsuccessfully used elsewhere. None as far as I know are in favor of a public takeover of any industries. They also believe that government investment in new technologies for energy production is good. Again, there is a mixed history here, with some investments working well (solar subsidies, EV subsidies), and others working less well. They appear outwardly to trust research and experts. They are attempting to protect voting rights, although this does happen to be politically expedient at the moment.

On the other side you have a group that fundamentally believes that less regulation and taxation is better for everyone. Although historically less regulation has meant that those with the least power bear the brunt of the economic/environmental/health impacts. There are basically infinite examples of this in every state. There is no real evidence as far as I know that extremely low tax rates on the wealthy and corporations actually stimulates the economy or "trickles down." This group has also been very comfortable misrepresenting or ignoring experts and contradicting scientists for decades. They are the ones that pushed hardest to allow MORE lobbying money.

Again, its a pretty lazy endeavor to just hold up these two groups and say "these are the same."
  • 8 0
@TwoNGlenn: It's not because of public policy or crime, it's price. Half of the home owners in California are realzing they can cashout to another state and accelerate their retirement date/age by 5 years or more. The other half of the exodus is people realizing they'll never be able to afford a place.
  • 6 0
@gerhards: It’s completely true. Everyone has a right to a better life, but at the end of the day. Mass migrations of primarily middle to upper class privileged white people to different areas make people’s eyes go green.

  • 7 1
@Bushmaster123: why would anyone be happy about that? all if does is raise taxes. my house payment has increased a decent amount strictly due to that. additionally my wife had to push to get out kids back (took them out for the year to home school due to covid) into our local elementary school for the upcoming year because the population around us has grown so much there was not a lot of room for the "locals" in our own schools.

ive lived in the same town my entire life (40 years) of those ive lived and worked at the same places for around 15 years. my commute has gone up 300-400% in the last 3-4 years.

you cannot go camping anymore without reserving a spot, the parking lots in the mountains are full (mtb, snowmobile, etc) and there are a lot of out of state plates.

some of the locals are not selling to out of towners but most people are weak and short sighted. one of the recent officials running for office suggested a higher tax for people moving into the state but the problem is such a large % of the people in the area are not locals.

when i was 19 i bought a house working in a warehouse. now you have to make 80-100k if you want to buy a house in town.

i would love to move somewhere else with less people them id be the a$$hole making their town crowded.
  • 5 1
@Bushmaster123: look the growth rates in idaho. it may not be unprecedented but it is not normal growth.

Our valley isnt THAT big and we averaged over 1,000 per week moving in last year. there are so many people moving here they will give you a uhaul if you're going from ID to CA.

the average home price is around 450k now. i bought my first home for 100k in 2001ish. my kids will not be able to buy homes in the town they grew up in.

i would say our area is somewhat unique in the total numbers and rate of growth.
  • 2 1
@HB208: the large amount of outdoorsy people sucks.

it seems like every turnout in the mtns is full now. i have friends with a cabin in valley county who love to hotspring. there said the springs (not gold fork) are so crowded they dont even go out anymore. and dont even try to hit up goldfork on the weekends. i took my kids years ago and wouldn't even waste the time now.

ive seen californians take handicap parking spots multiple times - i dont recall seeing there here before.

the neighborhood i rented in while building my house a few years ago had a large amount of out of towners some of the kids got busted dealing drugs in the neighborhood park. not that it didn't happen before but it is distinctly different that it was a few years ago.

Left doing at a national level what they've been doing in most of the major cities for decades on end. And you think covid appearing when it did was just a coincidence?! From eating bats, right?! Lol!

@PullMyBrakeLever: Proselytizing how Idaho should run itself certainly isn't helping anti- out-of-state sentiments amongst Idahoans.

Similar legislation limiting growth of property taxes isn't a new idea here. But it is a catch 22, with residential real estate one of the fastest growing sectors of economy specifically due to the flood of new residents.

Compounding the problem, the state has fewer taxable resources (compared to other states), property are the easiest opportunities for the state to scrape funds. There isn't a boom in resource extraction, or tech, or even just wage growth across the board (see above) to offset the additional funds needed to support the growth.

Many new residents are retirees as well, so while they may arrive paying cash on homes - another part of the problem affecting young local prospective homebuyers - they aren't resource for income tax proportional to their spending power.

@HB208: I rented a big ass Expedition XL for a family road trip tp Bend Oregon last June and it had Georgia plates. A few different gas station attendants ( you can't pump your own gas in OR) whispered to me that they were going to round up all tourists with CA plates and kick em out! (due to us 'bringing the Covid') LOL hell yeah! I said! Never been happier with GA plates. That turned out to be a Q rumor, but they did ask nicely that CA tourists refrain from visiting....

Berkeley probably isn't even prosecuting if the bike is worth less than $9,999. Kinda like what Cali is doing with shoplifters in the state now.
  • 2 1
Actually, large chain stores wait and let you shoplift multiple times. Then, when the value of what has been cumulatively stolen exceeds the threshold for a felony, they call the cops and press charges. Or, if it is a minor, they wait until they are 18 to pursue charges.

  • 11 1
I'm not American but I go there a lot and have been going there a lot since I was like 5, so maybe I don't get the full picture, and I don't want to offend anyone so please keep an open mind. From what I've gathered from movies and comments I hear when I'm in the states, sounds like Berkley is somewhat dangerous? if that's the case should police not have more people patrol that part o California? specially when the cellphone reception is bad at that place. So it seems to me, from the outside looking in like defunding the police is not the solution to current state of things in America, because no matter where you are, when there's less police around, people will start taking advantage of this. There's gotta be a solution to racial profiling without defunding the police.
  • 17 1
I guess Berkeley can be dangerous, but where these people are getting jacked is absolutely beautiful, with million-dollar homes nearby. It’s not like these people are riding through the slums of Detroit.

As for some of your other questions — yes, it seems to me there should be increased police activity in these areas. And yes, there can be a solution to racial profiling besides “defund the police.” But see, people here in the States have abandoned common sense and rationality here of late, especially in California. It is absolutely one of the most beautiful places in the country — the whole state — but it is being turned into a third world country. Homeless encampments everywhere. People jacking people for bikes. No middle class, because they can’t afford to live there. Just the rich and the really, really poor. And the smiling buffoon running the state doesn’t have a clue. It’s such a shame.
  • 14 5
The slogan "Defund the Police" is a very poor choice of words for what a lot of the people using it really mean. Most people don't want total abolition of the police; they just want to see a police force that isn't using military hardware, violently suppressing peaceful protests, and escalating confrontations with people in mental health crises. Yes, we should fund the police less (take away the money they're using for things they shouldn't be having/doing) and use their remaining budget where it is really needed (stopping violent criminals).
  • 5 6
@barp: Coz their is nothing like taking a knife to gun fight. Who would be a cop in US, blamed if they hurt bad people, blames if they dont help protect property and people and all the while told need to stop incarcerating minorities.

Generally, if you aint doing crime, you aint in the justice system and community " racism" will decrease.
  • 3 1
It's not necessarily dangerous if you're with friends and not generally super vulnerable. The problem is the police won't do shit because they've basically been told to stand down depending on the identity of the person committing the crime. And the cops aren't necessarily happy about this either but that's what they're told to do. And CA is huge. It's very different in the liberal cities vs conservative suburbs. Things are pretty normal where I'm at, then you go into the city and all of a sudden it's cool if you want to riot and loot stores. It's very strange overall and good for no one. But most of our politicians suck and they're simply doing what they think will keep them in power. We've got some of the oldest longest serving politicians here in CA, yet they like to act as though they're leading the change haha.

Last time I was in Berkeley was incredibly odd to say the least. Like on the busiest street in the city, we walked past homeless dudes smoking crack in the middle of all the people walking by midday. Cops nearby totally ignoring it while it smells like burnt plastic. Not to say they belong in jail or something, but for f*cks sake can't you go 100ft away from all the families and try to be even slightly discreet?
  • 2 2
@barp: How are they supposed to stop violent criminals without any hardware?
  • 3 3
@mtbikeaddict: I didn't say they should be bare-handed, just that they shouldn't be using *military hardware*. As in, MRAPs, submachine guns, and so on.
  • 1 0
@TheR: yeah, maybe it's a more complex issue than we think. The pandemic and the incredibly draconian measures taken in california regarding that matter with all the loss of jobs plus the issues with the police might be a big motivator for people to commit crime, it sounds super simplistic but people gotta eat. It would be interesting to compare crime statistics in california vs other states where the lockdowns have been more laid back and people have kept their businesses open and thus able to keep and pay their employees and also look at infections, seems to me there would be at least some correlation between those. I know my family in FL has been living like the virus doesn't exist for quite some time now, they just go everywhere with their masks and try to keep distance from people, plus most are already vaccinated. It's also weird the things I read and/or hear about the homeless in California specially in LA and SF and how permissive those cities are. When I was in NYC in 2019 it seemed like there was hardly any homeless people vs when I went to NYC when I was a kid in like 98/99 were homeless people seemed to be everywhere.
  • 2 0
@VZLNMTB: This is where California has been headed for a while. Maybe the pandemic and a couple other factors sped things along a little bit, but this is where it was going. It was inevitable.
  • 16 6
Californians need to wake up. You all live in the most beautiful state in the Union, and it’s being turned into a third world country. Huge chasm between the rich and the poor, and a shrinking middle class in between. You have rampant illegal immigration, the homeless camps in major cities are out of control and increasing lawlessness such as this. In the meantime, your smiling buffoon of a governor has no clue and no plan.

There will come a day you will look back and think, “damn, we had it all, and we let it slip away.”
  • 7 1
Trust me dude. Many of us here in CA know exactly what's happening and we're tired of the bs. Not to say one side of the political side of the aisle is inherently better than the other, but there are more conservatives in CA than any other state. But the state is essentially under one party rule. We need both sides so one can push back against the other when necessary but that doesn't happen here. It's sad and we've been aware for awhile what's being destroyed. I love this state and I don't want it going to shit.
  • 5 2
@DylanH93: That’s good to know. And you make a good point — one party rule going unchecked is the issue.

To the commenters pushing that Billy Badass fantasy that an "armed society is a polite society": think about how many stupid moves you see drivers pull on the road every week. Now, imagine all of those people have a gun and are just as proficient using a gun as they are at driving a car. There are very few situations where a non-professional with a gun makes anyone safer. Hell, most police in the U.S. don't have enough firearms training.

 @iiman:

In a situation like that, you have to fight the attacker's violence with even more overwhelming violence, wether you have a gun yourself or not, I don't care. You just go so ballistic on Mr. Thieve that he doesn't even know anymore what the hell is going on.
Okay, you have to be the right guy to do this and to take the risk. I just happen to be that kind of guy because in a moment like that my brain stops working. No one's taking of with my 7K trailbike.-
Nine out of ten times they probably don't even know how to operate the gun they carry anyways. Maybe it's not even loaded. In a moment like that I wouldn't even think about all that shit. Just get the guy to the ground and get him good. If there's two of 'em things might or could get different. Depends on if one is waiting in the get away car.
You could also get away yourself, on your bike! I've been on Grizzly Peak plenty times, and it goes well downhill. Small chance they will turn the car around and follow you down again... Again, no one is going anywhere with my 7K trailbike.

Well if ya need a gun to go riding, i reckon ya need one to go to the grocery store. Or sit on your porch, or walk through your neighborhood. Sadly someone always has bigger ordinance, even in a man to man fist fight. May have to get robbed once or twice, but not lookin to get killed or kill for it. If they get you, it was your time. Fantasizing you could win comes from watching too many kung fu movies. Not gonna hang out in the basement polishing my shotgun thinkin it will save me when the chips are down. Id give up the bike not to live with killing somebody. Even if i had a gun, i aint shootin anybody, especially they tryin to run away with their back to me with my bike.

A world of difference gettin robbed vs protecting your life or family.

Kill a person over a $xxxx bike? No. That aint cool.
  • 2 0
I live here in the area they are talking about and went biking on Grizzly Peak yesterday with my Santa Cruz Hightower 2020. It was weird and stressful, but I saw other people too. I tried to stick with other people, but it is no man's land up there between counties. That particular area, as they mentioned, is not really policed that well.

It was probably always a target. The local politics are very activist and progressive driven, so unlike other parts of the country, there is a pretty high bar for what will get you sent to jail.

Recently, in Oakland, the defunding police movement is getting push back (from both black people, white people, asian groups, etc) because of some crime-related issues mostly in the flat-lands in East Oakland and Downtown. This resulted in 25M more funding to police for sideshow activity. Property crime is still something that the police have an issue enforcing, but it is a combination of funding and also that judges are unlikely to do much. They did have a relatively successful program where they had 1:1 meetings with people likely to commit crimes (social workers, religious leaders, etc), but COVID stopped that program due to the in-person nature.

Hopefully things will get better once the pandemic is better under control. Until then, I'll probably keep riding up there and stick to times when other people are around. With pepper spray of course.
  • 2 0
"I don't even carry my phone anymore"... Not sure that'll keep you safe. Getting rid of your lifeline and a way to track the thieves (Find my iphone, --android equivalent--) doesn't seem like a good deal.
  • 2 3
ON another note... do GPS trackers work inside carbon frames? That would be a game changer
  • 1 0
@justwaki: There are not any issues with that. I think there are companies that make GPS trackers for shoving underneath the seat post. You can also do a bluetooth Tile tracker which is cheaper but limited in range depending on the model and probably tougher to hide on road bikes; the Tile tracker only works near other people with the app so you're better off with those in more populated areas. Get creative and you should be able to hide their smaller models
  • 2 0
@Rokcore: I just thought that Swat box is a neat place to have a tracker in. Not right at the view, just sneak it into the tube by reaching in through the opening. Vast majority of bike thieves are dumb - they will never check and filtering out 99.9% of thieves is the goal here. In my Antidote it would be just above the bottom bracket. I could slip in something through the opening in the bottom of the frame. Easy to remove and replace the battery.

Saddle is not optimal in my view. Too easy to just remove and it's hard to hide anything in there. You filter out no more than 50% of thieves this way.
  • 1 0
@justwaki: They also make black Tile trackers. It would be really hard to see if you somehow secured it to the bottom of the downtube in the SWAT box.
  • 2 0
@justwaki: yup, you're only limited by your creativity, on one of my previous bikes was able to hide one under the chain slap protector. I think you could hide one of the tile stickers in a steerer tube if you're willing to super glue it. Haven't tried it myself since there are easier places

  • 16 7
Cali doesn't really let people conceal carry. There are laws on the books, but it is VERY hard to do so. Here in Idaho, you don't even need a license. You can just conceal. I think it stops these sort of things since everyone assumes people are armed.
