Riders in Berkeley, California are deeply concerned after a string of armed bike thefts on a popular cycling route.
The latest robbery took place on April 10 when a Transition Spur was taken from a rider on Grizzly Peak Boulevard. This is the fourth confirmed robbery but apparently there have been other attempted thefts on the same road.
The perpetrators are using their vehicles to drive lone cyclists off the road and then are approaching them with guns or knives to take their bikes. If the robberies are connected, the thieves seem to be using different vehicles in different attacks. In the first attack,
The Berkleyside reports that, a cyclist was "run off the road … by two men in a grey VW or Toyota sedan", however, following the April 10 attack, UCPD are looking for a black or green Volkswagen or Volvo with California license plate number 5DJK736.
A cyclist has described what she suspects was an attempted robbery
to The Berkleyside. She said "I was riding up Grizzly Peak toward Tilden, about a quarter-mile uphill from Fish Ranch, when suddenly a small black car tried to run me off the road by veering right and stopping abruptly right in front of me,” she told Berkeleyside. “A black SUV was right behind it, effectively boxing me in (no escape route as there was no shoulder in that spot). Fortunately, both cars took off quickly (leaving me unharmed), and I am not sure if it was because other cyclists were coming up the hill in the distance.”
As shown in the above report from
CBS, local riders are increasingly concerned by the attacks. Lone riding has become more common during the pandemic and the slow speed of cyclists riding uphill makes them more vulnerable to attacks. Cyclists are urged to carry personal belongings in pockets rather than in frame bags and ride a less expensive bike if they have one. Police advise cyclists not to ride alone and instead ride with a large group or at least with one other person.
Several law enforcement agencies are responding to and investigating crimes in the area. We will update this story with more news as it comes in.
But seriously though, I think carrying on a bike might help with animals, but would likely just escalate a human/robber to shoot you first and then take your bike. I would gladly give them my bike rather than draw on them...
Why all the down votes? There's some crazy people out there and it's only a matter of time before the idiots robbing find out
Of course if no concealed carry then you could just train up in some unpronounceable martial art and de-arm your attacker then pistol whip them upside the noggin' before waiting on the local constabulary.
Now onto the wildlife, when we speak of trail cougars, are these lonely older women looking for a ride? Where are these trails again? Got any pichters?

That's not even getting into the recent shootings/killings regardless of race. If you want a little perspective about unnecessary force and police attitudes I highly recommend you watch this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmjB7TUroyE
From my perspective it is about stopping an unacceptable pattern of behaviour, there can't simply be no fear of repercussion or even reprisal which there becomes when no-one does anything, the frequency of muggings increases and nobody feels safe.
In my opinion that is when, often ill-thought-out, vigilante justice becomes an issue as frustration and fear build within the local riding community to the point that traps are laid, perpetrators are hunted by wannabe hero's and when that occurs it is unlikely to be a happy ending for any party involved.
It is however an interesting topic for discussion. Take it easy and happy riding....didn't even mean that, sorry.
Why not just let a few bugged bikes get stolen. Police then track them right to the bike.
But remember, de-fund police?
My insurance guy said rates are up BC crime has already increased. The local bike parks and trails are getting super crowded as well.
And yes, the issues above are disproportionately driven by former residents of a particular west coast state.
"And yes, most people hate the current state of liberalism." Lol, ok, is that why the GOP just lost the presidency and the Senate?
Happy riding.

"If you think your state is unique, try again." So yes, Idaho is a bit unique ATM.
On one side you have a group that fundamentally believes that wealth redistribution via taxation is a viable way to increase the equality of life experience in this country. There are economic arguments for and against this, but it is a strategy that has been successful in other places, and unsuccessfully used elsewhere. None as far as I know are in favor of a public takeover of any industries. They also believe that government investment in new technologies for energy production is good. Again, there is a mixed history here, with some investments working well (solar subsidies, EV subsidies), and others working less well. They appear outwardly to trust research and experts. They are attempting to protect voting rights, although this does happen to be politically expedient at the moment.
On the other side you have a group that fundamentally believes that less regulation and taxation is better for everyone. Although historically less regulation has meant that those with the least power bear the brunt of the economic/environmental/health impacts. There are basically infinite examples of this in every state. There is no real evidence as far as I know that extremely low tax rates on the wealthy and corporations actually stimulates the economy or "trickles down." This group has also been very comfortable misrepresenting or ignoring experts and contradicting scientists for decades. They are the ones that pushed hardest to allow MORE lobbying money.
Again, its a pretty lazy endeavor to just hold up these two groups and say "these are the same."
If you see a 35 years old rider with a tricked out sprinter van, a carbon fiber E bike with a wammy bar. With a condo on the puget sound. But they be working at Starbucks part time. There mom was prolly on 90210, or there dad bought a house in Orange County in 65. See the signs, tell a friend.
It's clear that you understand the fundamentals (which is cute) but it goes MUCH deeper.
ive lived in the same town my entire life (40 years) of those ive lived and worked at the same places for around 15 years. my commute has gone up 300-400% in the last 3-4 years.
you cannot go camping anymore without reserving a spot, the parking lots in the mountains are full (mtb, snowmobile, etc) and there are a lot of out of state plates.
some of the locals are not selling to out of towners but most people are weak and short sighted. one of the recent officials running for office suggested a higher tax for people moving into the state but the problem is such a large % of the people in the area are not locals.
when i was 19 i bought a house working in a warehouse. now you have to make 80-100k if you want to buy a house in town.
i would love to move somewhere else with less people them id be the a$$hole making their town crowded.
Our valley isnt THAT big and we averaged over 1,000 per week moving in last year. there are so many people moving here they will give you a uhaul if you're going from ID to CA.
the average home price is around 450k now. i bought my first home for 100k in 2001ish. my kids will not be able to buy homes in the town they grew up in.
i would say our area is somewhat unique in the total numbers and rate of growth.
it seems like every turnout in the mtns is full now. i have friends with a cabin in valley county who love to hotspring. there said the springs (not gold fork) are so crowded they dont even go out anymore. and dont even try to hit up goldfork on the weekends. i took my kids years ago and wouldn't even waste the time now.
ive seen californians take handicap parking spots multiple times - i dont recall seeing there here before.
the neighborhood i rented in while building my house a few years ago had a large amount of out of towners some of the kids got busted dealing drugs in the neighborhood park. not that it didn't happen before but it is distinctly different that it was a few years ago.
NIMBY
Similar legislation limiting growth of property taxes isn't a new idea here. But it is a catch 22, with residential real estate one of the fastest growing sectors of economy specifically due to the flood of new residents.
Compounding the problem, the state has fewer taxable resources (compared to other states), property are the easiest opportunities for the state to scrape funds. There isn't a boom in resource extraction, or tech, or even just wage growth across the board (see above) to offset the additional funds needed to support the growth.
Many new residents are retirees as well, so while they may arrive paying cash on homes - another part of the problem affecting young local prospective homebuyers - they aren't resource for income tax proportional to their spending power.
This happened though. I thought it was funny. My wife and I saw it when we were going skiing.

I personally think MTBers moving from Cali are fine. Like I said, I just don't like the super conservative people who just assume everyone in Boise is a stanch GOPer and then freak out at you if you aren't.
In that graff article this link is embedded. Stereotypes abound everywhere: RELATED: Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial in Boise vandalized with swastika stickers
STEP 1: Local bike theft on the rise
STEP 2: Armed groups of cyclists rolling together for protection.
STEP 3: Riders go from pedal bikes to ebikes to motocycles
STEP 4: The gang takes over local drug market
"VW or Toyota"
Is VW the Session of the car world?
What a sad world.
Good use of resources right?
What the hell
if you are the victim of an armed bike jacking, the cops will not, under any circumstances, do anything to help you.
DONT LET THEM IN, we don't need the US failed culture and their failed left socialist philosophy focused on "ism" and woke "equality" in Australia.
As for some of your other questions — yes, it seems to me there should be increased police activity in these areas. And yes, there can be a solution to racial profiling besides “defund the police.” But see, people here in the States have abandoned common sense and rationality here of late, especially in California. It is absolutely one of the most beautiful places in the country — the whole state — but it is being turned into a third world country. Homeless encampments everywhere. People jacking people for bikes. No middle class, because they can’t afford to live there. Just the rich and the really, really poor. And the smiling buffoon running the state doesn’t have a clue. It’s such a shame.
Generally, if you aint doing crime, you aint in the justice system and community " racism" will decrease.
Last time I was in Berkeley was incredibly odd to say the least. Like on the busiest street in the city, we walked past homeless dudes smoking crack in the middle of all the people walking by midday. Cops nearby totally ignoring it while it smells like burnt plastic. Not to say they belong in jail or something, but for f*cks sake can't you go 100ft away from all the families and try to be even slightly discreet?
There will come a day you will look back and think, “damn, we had it all, and we let it slip away.”
I am not down south luckily but up in bonnie Northern Scotland.
In a situation like that, you have to fight the attacker's violence with even more overwhelming violence, wether you have a gun yourself or not, I don't care. You just go so ballistic on Mr. Thieve that he doesn't even know anymore what the hell is going on.
Okay, you have to be the right guy to do this and to take the risk. I just happen to be that kind of guy because in a moment like that my brain stops working. No one's taking of with my 7K trailbike.-
Nine out of ten times they probably don't even know how to operate the gun they carry anyways. Maybe it's not even loaded. In a moment like that I wouldn't even think about all that shit. Just get the guy to the ground and get him good. If there's two of 'em things might or could get different. Depends on if one is waiting in the get away car.
You could also get away yourself, on your bike! I've been on Grizzly Peak plenty times, and it goes well downhill. Small chance they will turn the car around and follow you down again... Again, no one is going anywhere with my 7K trailbike.
I was talking lightly to trigger (no pun intended) some reactions, but man, if someone tries to rob me and the field is somewhat level, the hell I'm gonna stand my ground. And you should too
A world of difference gettin robbed vs protecting your life or family.
Kill a person over a $xxxx bike? No. That aint cool.
It was probably always a target. The local politics are very activist and progressive driven, so unlike other parts of the country, there is a pretty high bar for what will get you sent to jail.
Recently, in Oakland, the defunding police movement is getting push back (from both black people, white people, asian groups, etc) because of some crime-related issues mostly in the flat-lands in East Oakland and Downtown. This resulted in 25M more funding to police for sideshow activity. Property crime is still something that the police have an issue enforcing, but it is a combination of funding and also that judges are unlikely to do much. They did have a relatively successful program where they had 1:1 meetings with people likely to commit crimes (social workers, religious leaders, etc), but COVID stopped that program due to the in-person nature.
Hopefully things will get better once the pandemic is better under control. Until then, I'll probably keep riding up there and stick to times when other people are around. With pepper spray of course.
Saddle is not optimal in my view. Too easy to just remove and it's hard to hide anything in there. You filter out no more than 50% of thieves this way.
Cop- So its a Session?
You don't have to be a coward.
You can read my mind?
>since they think there are always vulnerable to mugging.
Under what circumstances are you not vulnerable to mugging?
>Wow my dude, these are isolated incidents.
It's called a pattern.
>You can crawl out from underneath your bed.
With my gun in hand
Your country after f*cking with the SAmerican world for 2 centuries has now become responsible for cronyism and the corruption of an entire Continent.
Thats not alternate, that's fact (Phat)Jack.
You mean like white supremacists?
Why does the thieve want your bike..? For drug money obviously. Fact: I HATE drugs, and everything related to drugs. So yes, I hate junkies too. Overhere where I live there's too many people saying shit like: 'Oh these people have a problem, we have to treat 'em with respect'... NO. No f***in' respect for the junkie in my world.
And if the junkie wants to steal my bike, he WILL have a hard time trying to steal it, because I payed for it with my hard earned money, not with a credit card with borrowed money, if you know what I mean.
And if I get hurt fighting the junkie, well then it's my bad day. At least I did what I could before letting him commit another crime.
Looks like there's a lot of the type of guys on here who ran off when they got into a street fight back in the day with their group of friends, instead of stood up for their buddies and raised a fist.
Come on, who the hell would have their expensive bike stolen in front of their eyes...?! Okay if you're a sixty year old out on your ride I can understand but us young guys.. Man the f*** up!!
Hah..! Finally there's one guy here with a proper explanation.
It's funny the stuff you mention. I'm in the military 22 years this year and did multiple tours to Afghan and the Middle East, rockets flying around me and shit.. So i'm not the scariest of types... I have been in Oakland many times in the past and I know it's heavy there, but I never knew it moved over to Berkley so bad. So yeah I might have been over-reacting here in this thread. It's my aggressive nature to certain topics I'm sure. My photography has brought me to California over 40 times, sometimes for weeks and weeks on end, and over the last years I even shot in places like Compton, Inglewood, Watts, etc. I even went into those neighbourhoods on my own.. So again, I'm not the scariest dude around... BUT... I see where you are going... These are indeed not junkies, but the "nothing to loose" kind of kids who kill for nothing without zero hesitation.
