Wyn Masters & Bernard Kerr to Race E-MTB World Champs

Wyn Masters Rides Leogang Up and Down

A number of high profile downhill riders, including Wyn Masters and Bernard Kerr, will be trying their hand at ebike racing at the inaugural ebike World Championships in Mont Sainte Anne tomorrow.

Why? Well, why not? Wyn is selected for the New Zealand squad for downhill and Bernard will be on-site with the Pivot team he manages. Both riders have previously been positive about ebikes and Wyn even made an edit on one.

The ebike race takes place on Wednesday and will be a 1.5-2 hour race on a 5.6km course. Riders should easily be able to recover before the downhill race on Sunday, plus it's a great opportunity to slip on the national jersey and represent your country and sponsors.

With ebike racing still in its infancy and a mixed bag of riders in attendance, the competition should be wide open. Whatever happens, a few stoppies or wheelies will make the race a whole lot better than the FIM's recent attempt.

Other Notable Riders

There's a whole host of familiar faces joining in the race, here are some others you may have heard of:

- Kenta Gallagher
- Jaroslav Kulhavy
- Marco Fontana
- Andreas Hestler
- Christoph Sauser
- Julien Absalon
- Anneke Beerten

May the lightest rider win! No, seriously, they're capped at 250w of assistance, but W/kg will drastically favor lighter riders now. I'm curious if this will show in the results.

Wouldn't heavier riders have more muscle to pedal with? And that's not capped that I know of.

@hbar314: yes, but the 250W boost will do less to help the heavier rider than it will the lighter rider.

  • 34 5
@hamncheez: they don't need to. Let's be honest here, this is nothing but the bike manufacturers paying to try and legitimize a burgeoning market. I mean, from a purely sporting perspective, this is pointless. Unless they come up with some sort of new format (I liked the backwoods idea someone mentioned) this is just a poor man's xc event.

Does anyone know the rules of motocross and supercross? If I race in the 250 class, I can have a 250 2 stroke or a 450 4 stroke, I think. Are there limits on power output, or is it solely displacement? How is it enforced?

Imagine trying to cut weight before a big E bike competition.
  • 24 7
There’s been an Ebike series run down here for a while now and you would be surprised about how certain skill sets develop. This sport actually favors the big sprinters and very skilled riders.

The riders spend the vast majority of the time at the max speed of the machine which makes acceleration less important and maintaining that speed more important. At the end of the race it tends to come down to a drag race where the leg power outruns the motor assist and it’s all about who can sprint 25mph with a 5# heavier bike.

Weight will make a difference off the start but will not be the defining characteristic of the winners. Keep an open mind because there are so many new skills to develop with this sport that it WILL develop its own avid following once it has fully matured and established.

PS: That FIM video was a complete joke and not at all what real Ebike racing looks like. Don’t even use that as a reference.

  • 1 0
It will definitely show. The strongest and lightest rider will win. Though bike handling skills are more important than in a normal xc race as climbing speeds are much greater.
  • 3 0
Rider weight plus age ought to be posted for us to see as well.
  • 11 1
@scott-townes: by that logic road and XC are the same sport....

Of course w/kg will make a difference! That’s fitness. But the emphasis will be on difference aspects of the ride much like how Short track and XCO cater to different skill sets. Also the same way enduro and DH cater to different skill sets.

While there is a lot of crossover obviously, the specialist will (almost) always win. It’s no different than any other sub-category of racing. We’re all doing the same thing in a slightly different way. High level racing is about nuance and precision across a very specific skill set, no matter what the format.

It's a strange dichotomy that so many on pinkbike avoid riding uphills but are opposed to riding e-bikes. I assume riders with real skills will absolutely obliterate their opponents.
  • 12 8
I like riding up hills, different skill set, (cadence, pedal stroke, gear selection, line choice....) E-bikes seem great if you want to spend 8 hours out on the trails, but I am happy with a 90 minute ride Smile
  • 19 4
@BornOnTwo: quite the opposite imo. Get more time going down, while still earning your turn. I think it's cool and helps you get more fun (assuming you still prefer the downs), in those 90 minutes.
  • 28 5
@BornOnTwo: I do go on some long epics, but the whole reason I got one is because my buddy got 7 downhills on his ebike in the time I got three on my acoustic... In 90 mins. 90 is my normal too. That hasn't changed in almost 30 years of riding. What has changed is that now I ride 5 to 7 times a week instead of 3 or 4 and I get double or triple the DH. It's a 90 minute win over and over again.
  • 17 3
@BornOnTwo: I can tell you have never actually ridden an E bike. Its been really interesting reading comments, as well as watching people ride an E bike for the first time since I started. See if you keep the bike in ECO mode I promise you will be very surprised at the workout you get on one. Also, you will be surprised how its a more complete body/core workout because you have to maneuver the bike on both the ups, downs, and flats. Now, bump the bike up to a higher mode and yes the legs get a rest, but the upper body doesn't. Just like a regular bike, if you like to push your body, you can do it on an E bike too. I find that I like to push myself when riding, and it is possible to do so on both type bikes, in fact if you want to actually push yourself on single track, I would argue you could get a better 90 minute workout on an E bike (in ECO mode) I know most won't understand this until they get out on an E bike and put in a couple good rides.
  • 5 1
@BornOnTwo: I'm happy with riding twice the amount of trails in the 90 minute ride. I'll actually have some fun in the day light during after work winter rides.
  • 4 0
@H3RESQ: totally agree ! I hired one for a weekend and road 1st day with pals on regular bikes on a 4hr epic day and put it in eco mode . I rode there pace which was pretty fast and at the end of the ride I was in a much better state than usual but had a good workout ! Day 2 I took it out on my own for a 90 min loop on the local trails and went flat out from start to finish . Did it in just under an hour and I was absolutely cooked ! Bike was a spec’ kenevo and 1st used 3rd of the battery and 2nd day I used 90% in an hour ! It’s got me thinking !!
  • 2 2
@BornOnTwo: I agree with you. I would rather slug it out with just my own power.

@warmerdamj: I like to do both, slugging it out on my own and crushing hills on my ebike. They are different gratifications. Both are great to experience.

@PtDiddy: that's fine, you like to mountain bike but you also like to ebike. Just dont confuse the two!
  • 3 0
@warmerdamj: it’s easy to do. They feel pretty much the same. Having enough experience with both, I have no problem classifying then under the same mountain biking umbrella. To me it’s just a different type of mountain bike. Like a downhill vs a XC bike. That’s just me though, I know everyone doesn’t share my opinion.

Personally, I think E-Bike racing could be really, really cool if they do it right.

That trash on a moto track we had last week was embarrassing for everyone involved. Now we have this version which is just an assisted race on an XC track. Given the type of track, I don't understand how the most XC person won't absolutely crush everyone else here. Like, fire Nino Schurter on one of these things and I literally don't see the difference except he can climb slightly faster.

I think E-Bike racing could be very exciting if they picked a track with a couple good tech descending sections and had some real, tech climbs as well. Find a way to balance it for people to want to select mid to long travel e-bikes. That or back woods style stage racing, like rally or hard enduro (moto).

As is I don't see how it'll be any different from XC. I'm happy to be proven wrong however.
  • 24 0
You might be on to something with "backwoods style stage racing." I could possibly be interested if they were sending the racers out into the woods on gnarly old singletrack and game trails, not a pre-fab course, where the participants have to do wayfinding and stuff like that. Make it a real survival adventure where you can't just ride full power the whole time, but have to moderate to make the battery last or else you're stuck out there with a 50-pound bike to push around. This makes me think of one of the cool eMTB uses I have seen: hunters riding powered fat bikes instead of loud quads/4x4s.
  • 2 0
@KFuller: this is definitely the angle some eBike companies are pushing, I'd be curious how succesful it's been. www.radpowerbikes.com/pages/the-ultimate-hunting-electric-bike
  • 2 0
The MSA course looks to have some properly technical climbs which is awesome. It won't just be a smash and grab on the uphill where watt/KG is the only factor. It will also make the descents way more important since the uphill power differences will be smoothed out by the eBike motor.
  • 6 0
Agree. Simply adopting the Enduro format but having stages be varied and with an emphasis on technical would be rad. something like Tech climb stage Rolling stage DH stage with tech climb in the middle climbing stage with a few super-technical chutes dh stage
  • 6 1
@KFuller: This is the only reason I would personally want one. I wouldn't go near my property with a loud/smelly quad during deer season. An Ebike makes a lot of sense for hunting applications.

I think ebike racing could be fun if it was a very short track with like 20 laps (like supercross, but not like the disaster we saw last week) thats maybe a half mile loop, where you ride up a very steep, technical trail like a hill climb, then come down a 4x course, with races maybe having 20 riders tops.

As a sports event director and a life long racer, I was an early adopter and have been putting on Ebike races for many years now with varying formats from Hard Enduro, Trail XC, MTB Enduro, 4x, Hare-N-Hound, Time Trial, Crit, BMX tracks, to Cyclo-cross tracks... I also implement different categories so that people who build their own bikes (high powered) can have a run as well. At the end of the day, no matter the format, if you have the proper categories/divisions every single format can be really fun and exciting. Even the example of the FIM ebike race on a super-cross track could have been received a lot better if they had different categories and length of times/laps or distance dependent upon category... There are a handful of ebike race events going on these days and I've been fortune to have participated in a bunch of them in the US and it would be very useful for these organization to pay more attention to creating proper categories/division vs. having the focused attention on the bikes watt power or battery watt hours.

How true. Unfortunately mountain biking has become a sponsor-driven sport whereby sponsored riders will do whatever their sponsors tell them to do regardless of whether or not they look ridiculous or are endangering the long term viability of the sport that we enjoy.
  • 9 12
@cboutin: I agree. Ive noticed that the only true mtbers riding ebikes are sponsored or have some hook up on e-bikes. Hardcore dirtbag mtbers arent buying ebikes. Some out of shape folks searching for the glory days, and people new to mtb, thats who is buying the ebikes. Its a weird thing, top pros and newbies (or those folks that dont ride much anymore) making up most of ebike crowd.

@Jamsxr: ebikes = fake cycling. When you can't real bike anymore, you ebike.
  • 6 1
@cboutin: I expect Wyn and Bernard will be doing this for fun, not because they're being forced to..

Why are people so worried about new race formats for biking? We have a million different forms of motor racing. Are the F1 guys getting upset that Formula E is a thing? Are the classic rally crowd scared that Group A is going to diminish the value of their sport? Enduro Motorcycles vs Trials vs Hillclimb.. There's plenty of room for these categories to coexist...

However, Ebike racing is going to need consistent rules to level the playing field for the type of bikes that enter, like power output and weight. That FIM shenanigan last week just proved how much variation there is in across eMTB bikes. Some de-tuned throttle assisted moto looking thing won, and I predict that's where the sport will be heading in the next few years. I doubt we will be watching Pivot Shuttles battle it out with Turbo Levos for long.

I came here accidentally (I'm unsubscribed from e-bike articles but wasn't logged on to pinkbike initially). And I've just realised that the subscription feature isn't to keep e-bike/xc/dh whatever from the reader, it's to keep the reader from the content so they don't get all negative in the comments section! Reading the comments here i couldn't at first figure out how all the negative ebike comments were being downvoted. But then I realised most of the anti-e-bike people aren't here to begin with! Genius!

To be clear I'm not anti- ebike, I just chose to ignore it as its not my bag. But I think its smart of Pinkbike to have figured out a way for their advertisers to promote ebikes without all the usual hatred for them, and at the same time make it appeal to the anti-ebike brigade. However came up with that scheme at pinkbike deserves a raise Smile

I marshaled an enduro last weekend which had introduced an E-bike category, so basically they were riding the same stages as normally aspirated mtb's.... the conditions were bone dry, dusty and very sketchy in the flat turns.. most of the E-bike riders were very cautious, unlike many of the non-E who were throwing into the turns foot out and sliding carrying speed... Appreciate that many of the E-bikes were not 9000E exotica boasting sub 20kg, most being in the 3000E range and 25kg plus, and pressing into turns was not for the faint hearted.. the conclusion was that they were a lot slower descending all stages, which if i'm honest is how Wyn looks coming down Leogang....

Hopefully the race is not on a supercross track....

Kind of a dumb event, but the prospect of XC guys like Absalon and others racing in the same event with some big gravity names is kinda neat actually

Maybe one day they will have all this E-bike crap sorted out and find an actually entertaining race platform with regulations that actually level the field for the best riders to really shine. As of right now the whole damn thing seems like a mess. I hope this race shows promise. But I also hope able-bodied riders try to push the limits of their fitness on a normal bike before going to an e-bike. I think most anti e-bike people hate the idea of e-bikes taking credibility away from people that really prioritize their time to go out and spend time on their bikes, push themselves really hard to get to the top of that hill and really earn those turns on the way down.

That being if I ever encounter some one that scoffs at a ride I did and say something like "Pffff! I rode all of that in half the time on my e-bike" I would be inclined to kick that persons teeth down their throat.

You know the saying " How do you know some one rides single speed? Don't worry they'll tell you"

Wait til you have to specify to people you rode all those miles on a real bike to keep every one from assuming it was on an e-bike.
