Rangers just blocked off UCSC with fencing after the Sea Otter. Been ticketing like crazy there too. NorCal's love of MTBers.

@tacklingdummy: Actually, they only blocked off one entrance to protect an endangered beetle. The sign told people how to access the trailhead from down the road.

STOP. POSTING. LOCATIONS. ON. PINK BIKE.

Seriously, what are you people doing???? Whether or not this video was actually shot there, why the hell are you broadcasting the location of sensitive trails? To show that you're cool and in the know? Is that really worth the incremental risk that every comment like this puts on these places of getting shut down?

Trails like this get shut down because people like you seem to take it for granted that they'll always be there.

We are beginning an era of mass extinctions, logging thousands of the remaining trees is tolerated nearby, but riding a bicycle on a trail in the woods is met by law enforcement and fines. What a world.

@thevpfreerider: That so-called secret sensitive trails place is the most ridden place in SC and the entire South Bay Area. Last time I checked the main downhill there had 45,000 attempts on Strava. That is only second to Flow Trail at Demo with 51,000 attempts. Those two trails get ridden the most by far of any trails in that area. I live 30min from there and every tom, dick, and harry knows of it.
  • 9 2
@tacklingdummy: No crap it's not a secret, but if you want to go around publicizing this stuff you'll need to find a new place to ride. Don't be stupid. *try not to be stupid.
  • 2 5
@downcountry: The municipalities and rangers have shut that place down numerous times. Just last week they fenced off the area and were ticketing heavily. One guy got carried away in an ambulance. And I'm the bad guy for talking about it vaguely in comments when the there was a video made of it, distributed it, and Pink Bike posted the video of it. LMAO.
  • 3 3
@tacklingdummy: Yeah, the video is good quality, but it is a really bad idea. I ride that area 3-5x a week. I know the mess that will likely ensue. Unfortunately, the mtb industry is all about social media and marketing and right now it's all about content, the 'likes', marketing and 'bro-ness'. Thank god for social media. I thought these guys were OG and understood the cost of posting this? Whey not build in their home zone in Aptos? One of the guys has property....
  • 2 1
@downcountry: The mess has already ensued over the years. I live 30 minutes from there and that place has had the most public battles (in the local news) with the municipalities of any park in the Bay Area. The next closest to public controversies is Marin. It is not a secret fight club spot. It is the most known riding zone for that area locally and people around the world. Before the Sea Otter, I saw dozens of pros posting videos and instagram pics of that place because all the pros from around the world went to ride there.
  • 4 2
@tacklingdummy: damn dude you're still going strong! Location being from SJ checks out, of course you're way more involved in the local scene and trail advocacy than those of us who live less than a mile from here. And have fun going off on that "local business" the old, abandoned historical building isn't that rad.
  • 4 3
 @nicky-d: So, what's your point?
  • 3 3
@tacklingdummy: trying to figure out why you're so bored to keep ranting to be Mr. cool guy. Why don't you go build rad trails in your bay area zip code? I assume you already went off on the X-Fusion video as well that wasn't filmed in a legal area? Still funny that this edit isn't even on trails that you keep debating lol
  • 11 2
@tacklingdummy: Hey San Jose, since these are your "local trails", instead of using those worthless hands to type utter bullshit, pick up a shovel and maintain them for once.

I know that won't be enough so I'll dumb it down for you : We (locals) build hidden trails because we are tired of people (like you) coming up and sharing it to all of your buddies. So we will continue to build cool shit, post it on the internet, and leave mouth breathers like you unincluded because of your lack of involvement to the trail network we grew up on. Happy riding!

@Bamofo: I think you need to save your breath for all the pros and youtubers who visited that place just before the Sea Otter and other times and posted numerous videos and Instagram pics publicizing that place and sharing it. Do you really think my comments have exposed that place compared to the videos, pics, and social media posts? That is laughable to put me as some beacon shining a spotlight on the place to expose it to the world. It is the most ridden zone in the entire SC and South Bay Area if not the entire Bay Area.

Good for you working on those trails. I don't ride there because I have been ticketed before $400 bucks a few times. I also pay 10K a year in local taxes to support my local trails. How much do you take out of your pocket to fund your local trails?
  • 10 2
@tacklingdummy: If you have a job that allows you 10k annually just for local trail support why are you debating a guy named "Bamofo" on the internet on a Thursday morning....
  • 5 3
@jasperwesselman: Paying high local taxes doesn't mean high paying job, it means you own a house. County property taxes pays for local parks trails and maintenance.

Because I want to get the new fight club rules. So far I learned that from you guys:
1. OK to post articles, videos, and pics to websites and social media (youtube, instatgram, etc) of fight club riding zones as long as you are a pro, website, or creator.
2. Ok to post location if you have one of the top comments on the PB article.
3. Not ok to vaguely comment on video.

Glad I'm learning the new rules. Thanks for the education. I am enlightened. Cheers.
  • 5 3
@tacklingdummy: you guys are still failing to realize you all blew this way out of proportion when the area this edit was built and shot is not even close to the location you're trying to call attention to. FYI that abandoned building you're all trying to google is quite far away from the private property this was granted to shoot. Truly funny to witness all this. But glad SC was brought up out of nowhere, gotta keep that hush-hush when it's the most blown up spot with the city, county, state, and local organizations already on target to figure out a plan for it. Again, truly entertaining the debates when all of your geography is so far off.

Ya know, if a trail system is sensitive, maybe it's best not to film there and post to a website that's followed by thousands of mountain bikers? All it takes is one person outing a trail name in the comments and suddenly anyone can find the trail with a little homework. Once it's on the internet you're not in control of it, even if you don't say where it was filmed.

First rule of fight club...
  • 15 11
Thats usually not the issue. We build these lines to be filmed, and to show the world mountain bike videos to get people stoked to ride their bike. Posting a video of trails in the redwoods doesn't disclose locations. Some mountains are more well known than others. This was filmed in 4 different places, many miles apart from eachother.

It's just a weird time to be a mtber or to grow the sport of mtbing in Commifornia right now...I only ever see this fight club bs and negativity when it's trails in CA which is sad considering all the mtb-centric towns elsewhere. Sometimes I think the entire state should burn down so we can start over.
  • 11 7
@nexus-collective: I would have agreed with you 100% had you not included that random shot of a business, which, as others have said, takes about ten seconds to find the location of. That puts you in the region of these trails. Once you know the region, it's easy to find the trails themselves (or some other "secret" trails in the area). You've effectively given people--including anti-mountain biking groups--a "start your search here" location for illegal trails, for absolutely no good reason, when there a thousand reasons to limit the location information to "Norcal" at most.

@jasperwesselman: @nickydinapoli: Deflecting doesn’t change a thing. Yes, there’s a problem with that, too. It’s really simple, if unpopular with those who have means and motivation to film in there areas: exposure of unsanctioned trails on social media and the internet in general, especially when people whether in video or in comments name names, puts those areas on really shaky ground. Deflect all you want, but that remains.
  • 10 3
 @thevpfreerider: You're still speaking?
  • 17 2
@thevpfreerider: UC scenes dead bud! Everyone knows about it. Brands lead demos on our trails. It’s blown out and there’s no denying it., Sure some true detective might be able to decode where this was shot, but the truth is, the people who come over the hill every day to ride it and never do any work to maintain it, are the ones who have ruined it for everyone. Besides, 90% of this video was shot on private land, legally. Criticizing these guys for putting some B roll in a vid that doesn’t suit your tastes because you’ve spent countless hours digging trails in the area is just pointless man! It’s too f*ckin late!
  • 5 8
@jasperwesselman: "The hundreds of cars, kooks, and instagram stories must go completely un-noticed by the constantly patrolling authorities"

I feel like this comment misses the point though--I recognize that the trails in this area aren't some sort of perfectly kept secret. If someone is determined to find these trails and knows the general area in which to look, they'll be able to. BUT--what I am arguing is that it is counterproductive to spread awareness of them, and to further broadcast the riding and building going on in those woods.

Without that shot of the local business, this is a video of a dude getting rad in Anywhereville, USA. With that shot included, this is a video of a dude illegally building and riding in an area with very delicate rider access politics.

And hey, trail access issues aside, I thought the riding was dope! Loamy Norcal goodness is always fun to watch any day. But we can't set aside the realities of trail access politics here--and I can't see how that shot of the local business isn't problematic on that front..
  • 7 9
@JP199: This argument is insane. You could rephrase it as "Hey we're the locals here, and things aren't perfect, so let us f*ck things up without criticizing it if that's what we choose to do". None of this is productive.

You didn't start the scene in the area. You didn't build all of the trails, nor do you do all of the pro-mtb lobbying that keeps the scene over there as healthy as it is. You're risking *other peoples* work and trails when you're not careful about these things.

90% of this video was shot legally...cool. So you admit 10% wasn't. So even you locals would seem to get some enjoyment out of these illegal trails. How about we try to work together to not shoot ourselves in the foot, access-wise then, eh?

@jasperwesselman: Jesus dude. This thread has opened my eyes to the sorry attitude that apparently exists among certain people like you in the local riding scene, that I wasn't aware of before yesterday. This defeatist, closed-minded perspective on trail access I’m seeing is unnecessary and counterproductive. Worse still, I can’t get past how pathetically arrogant you’ve made yourselves sound in these comments.

You sleuth on people's profiles to see if you can throw shit at them for having to drive 30 minutes to the trails rather than 10, because your weak arguments can't stand on their own merits. You clap back with siiiiiick burns like “you’re still speaking?” and then jerk each other off with your own comments. Hating on people for being from San Jose or Menlo Park takes a special kind of contrived bigotry, but you’re somehow pulling it off.

I've built trail in Colorado and Socal, and had zero problem with others riding my work because….why the f*ck would I? This sport is strengthened by its community—ride my trails, and I ride yours, but ride with respect. Keep illegal trails as hush-hush as possible, minimize your impact, help out on trail maintenance days, and we can thrive together. Do it right, and a riding community can grow, like you see in BC, for example. Get lax about it, and you end up with another Marin County.

Every single rider I’ve ever met in the area has been f*cking rad, polite, and cool to chat with before dropping in for a lap. I’m starting to think they must all be my fellow 30-minute drivers, because you guys sure as f*ck ain’t any of those things.

@thevpfreerider: You're gonna get neg prop'd by all the dudes who want to support their bros, but let me just say that this particular comment articulates most of my exact thoughts on the matter, and this whole thread. Fast guys who spend a lot of time digging get placed on a pedestal around here. Maybe they spend a lot of time advocating for access and taking a more constructive long view on the places they build and ride, but that's certainly not evident in these comments.

@thevpfreerider: Nobody invited you to make comments of us apparantly "leaking" a riding spot. The least "hush-hush" allegedly secret riding spot I've ever come across in shooting MTB all over the world. If we play off the discomfort with a bit of humor reffering to your disconnection from the area and situation. Then you can deal with it the same way we had to deal with your "pathetically arrogant" accusations.
  • 11 2
@jasperwesselman: You must be new to the world, if you think you weren't going to catch some flak for putting identifying markers in your video of an illegal trail network. "It's already blown up, so stop whining" is a total and complete cop-out.
  • 3 4
@scvkurt03: Not new at all... Had a top rider I shot nearly get dropped from his Fox contract over this same crap years ago. You have every right to say what you want but we have the same right to refute every last word.
  • 6 3
@jasperwesselman: If you're going to abandon responsibility for making a bad problem worse (how do you think it got blown up?), you could have done so properly by leaving out a marker and letting morons in the comments name the spot.
  • 2 1
@scvkurt03: Will adopting responsibility to absolute secrecy, create a better situation on those specific trails given the current and historical circumstances?
  • 6 1
@jasperwesselman: If fewer people were whoring out sensitive areas for their brands, their insta stories, or their budding careers, it would absolutely be a step in the right direction. Do you disagree?
  • 2 1
@scvkurt03: I completely agree. Where we disagree is if we with our images potentially compromised access to the sensitive land in question, more than it already was. I don't think we did, and thats okay. Neither of us are objectively wrong.
  • 3 1
@jasperwesselman: You agree that it would be good if people stopped using social media in sensitive places, but you don't think *you* need to stop because it's already sensitive. I appreciate your respectful tone, but that's a bit of double speaking BS right there. Kind of feel like this is an internet dead horse, so I'm just gonna leave it there. Hope to catch you out there some time and give you some in person shit about this. HAH! ✌
  • 1 4
@scvkurt03: Its not a doublethink at all. I completely recognize there are instances and locations that require plenty of caution and responsibility in how and what you share. I believe that this is not one of those instances. It feels like a dead horse because you make us rephrase the same answer again and again by arguing our opinion is a "total cop out" or "abandonment of responsibility". Its not, its what we chose to think in this particular circumstance. If you disagree thats no problem at all to anyone.
  • 4 3
@jasperwesselman: Ugh, all right... so... It's a dead horse because you're not getting it. You keep repeating yourself because you're not getting it. My bad, I guess? While people are getting tickets, you make a vid which inevitably draws more people to the area (don't act like it doesn't - when your riding is rad it makes every Joey think they can ride rad if they JUST RIDE THERE TOO).. Anyway, these people in turn get more tickets or cause more havoc on the road, and the area becomes more and more of a priority for enforcement. Enforcement of the area goes in cycles, but what always allows it to die down is people shutting up about it. There is currently a problem. Posting videos with markers does not help. Simple as that. I'm not sure how you can disagree.
  • 1 4
@scvkurt03: I disagree, because people do those things voluntarily with their own decision making skills. Even if what I make influences that in any degree whatsoever.
  • 1 0
@ssip: I have some gas and matches.
  • 1 1
 @jasperwesselman: It's advertising.
  • 1 3

  • 3 2
@jasperwesselman: You're passing the buck. You had a decision to make, too. The point of advertising is to sell something. If you want to avoid inadvertently selling something, you make it hard to find. You did not do that.
  • 3 3

  • 2 1
 @jasperwesselman: We agreed!
  • 1 2

@GiantGlory02010 Bummer you feel the need publicly shade people inaccurately. I have never met a Luke Coley in my whole life. And here ya are
  • 9 5
@nexus-collective: I wonder why he would do that?

@jasperwesselman: that would be weird. Wally just shot me a message, strange how he found me if he's never heard of me

@suckitwally: you made an account, to do.. this ?
  • 10 2
 Suicide isn’t a joke dude! @huckmaster69:
  • 10 3
@Jaydenfarley: Its okay man but thanks. I have no idea why Wally and I would kill ourselves after buying Lambo's with our edit money.

@jasperwesselman: the dude joined in 2016 but yeah I made it specifically for moments like this so I can convienently back myself up. Not a bad theory actually. @huckmaster69 you're really putting me in a tough spot bud

Awesome video. I am sorry to see the comments have turned into typical location arguments. I figured this would happen when I saw the screenshot for the video. Anyways, keep shredding and making awesome videos. Eff the haters.
  • 22 7
I still get confused if Santa Cruz now means San Jose though??
  • 8 4
 Luv u Nicky
  • 3 0
San Jose - Check Intense bike - Check Mom's minivan double-parked at the bottom of JXgs - CHECK!
  • 14 3
People that actually live in N California would be on the fence as to if this location is northern or central CA. I'm surprised they put in that shot of a business that is easily google-able.
  • 7 8
Amen - this drive me nuts, NorCal, aka Humboldt/Del Norte have as much in common with the Bay Area as a San Franciscan does with somebody from Sub Sahara Africa.
  • 5 6
Geographic center line of California is 37.16° latitude, and by that standard the Santa Cruz area isn't even in the northern half of the state
  • 12 2
Why are all the comment kooks blowing up the location?

A photo of a business in a video is hard to search via Google. Pinkbike comments are easy af to search, if an authority wanted to do so.

flag tacklingdummy (May 1, 2019 at 20:54) (Below Threshold)
Are you kidding? The comments on location are totally vague. The business in the video is way more descriptive. Also, the place is more known than Demo.
  • 5 1
@tacklingdummy: you more than anyone else here keeps mentioning the area, kook. How many more posts are you going to make calling attention to the zone?
  • 1 3
@rpet: That zone is the most ridden area in SC and South Bay Area by far. You are the kook thinking it is some secret trail. LMAO!!! The main downhill trail there has 45,000 attempts on Strava. The only other trail that has more attempts in the SC and South Bay Area is Flow trail at Demo which has 51,000 attempts. I live 30 minutes from there.
  • 4 1
@tacklingdummy: there you go - making another post calling out the area. You sound like a narc trying to get trails shut down. Stop posting kid - you’re a menace.
  • 2 3
@rpet: You are hating on me for commenting vaguely on it when they made a descriptive public video of it, distributed it, and Pink Bike posted it in an article. LMAO!!

I'd like to officially change the location of the greater Bay Area to CENTRAL California, please spread the word.
  • 12 3
I really love the feel of this video. Jasper and Wally are an incredible duo. Stoked for more projects like this. I wonder how many people in these comments actually build trail.
  • 14 4
That's definitely @Demo....too bad it's been manicured AF! All you need is a Mini BMX to ride that FLOW Trail!

@scvkurt03: Chill, no need to get your panties in a bunch. That place just got fenced off and rangers ticketing a lot. People act like it is some secret spot when it is more known than Demo.
  • 3 6
@scvkurt03: You should be saying that to the top commenter @JackHowser for bringing up the location first and foremost and his comment of UCSC way more descriptive than mine. Highway 9 is 40 miles long buddy.

All k00k location based commenting only diverts the focus from the true reality here. Sick shred paired up with absurdly good editing. This is what I love to see every time!

Its interesting to see a freerider opting for the legend instead of the darkside?
  • 9 1
I rode the darkside for the last couple of years! It is one of my all time favorite bikes hands down. But the legend is just another genre to experiment with.
