Video: Setting the Guinness World Records Achievement for the Greatest Vertical Descent in 24 hours

Apr 12, 2019 at 19:27
by Joris Schwitalla

Presented by Mercedes-Benz

Amir Kabbani and Patrick Schweika set the new Guinness World Records achievement for the greatest vertical descent on a mountain bike in 24 hours at Bikepark Schladming in Austria last October. The two athletes rode the 1074.75-metre descent as often as possible within the 24-hour window to break the existing record of 32,796.9 metres. After every descent, the riders were shuttled back up the winding road to the start of the track in a Mercedes-Benz X-Class.

bigquotesUp until the 20th time, it was still fun. After that, we just kept on functioning until 6:30 in the morning.Amir Kabbani

The pickup was the perfect partner for the job: The loading surface provided plenty of space for the bikes and enabled rapid loading and unloading. The route to the starting point ran through a winding sealed road and continued along a gravel path. Thanks to its driving dynamics and off-road capabilities, the X-Class lost no valuable time here at all.

A team of 50 people made the record possible while shooting an epic mountain bike content piece. The entire staff of mechanics, physiotherapists, organizers, officials, stunt drivers, camera crew, and drone operators did an incredible job. When the two athletes equaled the former record in the middle of the night, they kept pushing on, setting a new all-time best of 40,840.5 metres. Even with the disadvantages of short autumn days with little daylight and a slippery track with frozen conditions overnight, the two riders were able to push through their fatigue and shatter the previously set record.

Wow, the new @Mercedes-Benz #X-Class (tm) sounds like the perfect #Partner for all my #Adventures on my #Mountainbike.

The marketing people who put this together need to dial back the cringe a few notches. We would have got that the attempt was sponsored by Merc without all the marketing speak and photos of the trucks without the bikes even in the back.

How about instead of:

"The pickup was the perfect partner for the job: The loading surface provided plenty of space for the bikes and enabled rapid loading and unloading. The route to the starting point ran through a winding sealed road and continued along a gravel path. Thanks to its driving dynamics and off-road capabilities, the X-Class lost no valuable time here at all."

Something like:

"The attempt was sponsored by Mercedes who provided their X-Class to speed up the uplift compared to the chairlift and increase the number of runs possible."

so we don't have to cringe ourselves inside out reading it.

Congratulations to the riders, that much descending is a true marathon.

Agree! Great achievement that was sullied by the over the top commercial nature of the film. The edit also made my eyes hurt. It's ok to have shots longer than .3 of a second in my opinion.

Stopped reading the article half way through when i realised it was just a mercedes advert. Had they just subtly mentioned their involvement i would have thought merc slightly cooler than i did previously. After reading (half of) this article however im gonna spend the rest of the day flipping the bird at merc drivers.
  • 42 4
All though 40,000+ meters is a impressive feat but the people who raced 24 hours DH races at Bikepark Semmering did way more than 40,000m of descending for 10 years,i did 128 laps with 44,800 meters of descending during a 24 hour DH event and i wasn't even the top dog,the winner did 55,800 meters of descend in 24 hours.

But then again congrats to the riders who set the record & i can tell from my experiences with 24 Hours DH events it's the hardest thing in DH.
  • 37 3
I would not call that a Mercedes-Benz "pickup", I would call it a Honda Ridgeline.
  • 38 10
Oh Mercedes, this was terrible for the environment!
  • 27 1
If it was aimed at bikers then Mercedes missed their mark. If it was aimed at people who know nothing about biking then it's a good commercial.
  • 13 2
Agreed - that was way over the top, botched & heavy handed attempt at marketing. Yawn.
  • 65 8
PBers- Pro riders should be paid more. They earn NOTHING. Major auto manufacturer steps into the sport including sponsoring WCDH. PBers- THIS IS ADVERTISING AND MARKETING!! MAKE IT GO AWAY.
  • 63 4
Pb commenters: We need more sponsorship money invested in mountain biking!

Mercedes: *invests more sponsorship money in mountain biking*

Pb commenters: WTF?!?!?!?

Not really sure why you all seem to be surprised that an article categorized as sponsored content with the title "24-Hour Downhill Mountain Biking World Record With the X-Class" included advertisements for the X-class.
  • 14 1
@Boardlife69: Appreciate MB putting money into the sport. Could be a little less overt, but on the other hand I'd rather have overt advertising than pseudo-articles trying to manipulate you into believing its not marketing.

For example, the Toyota advertising trip up on Haida Gwai was well done. Clearly an ad,but not in your face about it, and a cool trip. I still remember it months later, so it was effective.
  • 10 0
Got no problem with the general idea of the thing. Just when I found myself reading more about the quality of the uplift than about the actual riding I decided not to read the rest of the article. This is poor pr for Merc and it seems most people agree. I imagine Merc will take this feedback and get their next bit of pr written by someone who understands the mtb community better. This will be a good thing for everyone involved. As it is, this article kinda put me off buying from Mercedes. I doubt this is what they intended.
  • 6 0
@fantaman: Wher can i find more info on that race?
  • 2 0
@mini: It was on the Bikeparks it's website i don't know if they continue the 24 hour DH or not,but racing 24 hours is the most thrilling DH experience ever it's pushing the limits to a new level.
  • 18 0
@kookseverywhere: You can still sponsor an event without looking desperate and putting off the viewer. Red Bull does a nice job of this without saying "After every run, the athletes pushed through the fatigue by downing a cool, refreshing, Red Bull and exclaiming to themselves 'That gives me wings!'"
  • 8 0
Sweet pick up truck. This would have been a better ad without wasting time on the mountain bikes. PB when are we getting the Merc pick up review?
  • 7 0
 @TheFireSermon: you mean a Nissan
  • 1 0
@gabriel-mission9: If that's the case, its more likely they'll just not do anything mtb related again. Was cheesy, but i thought it was good regardless and its a sick looking truck.

This is an absolutely ridiculous ad. Seriously marketing people, we are not stupid, you are insulting. You are doing it for half a century, maybe it's time to end this kind of shit and start thinking like we have a brain.
  • 18 9
@fracasnoxteam: nobody cares about you being insulted. Nobody owes you anything. Your life is meaningless, only you can give it a meaning that matters mostly to yourself. Even your close ones don’t care what you find meaningful. They need you for their own purposes and have their own ideas about who you better be. Once you realize that you can be truly happy. Big Grin
  • 4 0
for a second I thought it was a trailer for the next Avengers movie.....
  • 5 0
Mercedes must have the same ad agency as Rynopower. These companies pay agencies a fortune to come up with this crap. If they had spoken to a single mtb rider before releasing that article they would have realised they had missed the mark and wasted a ton of cash on what could have been cool had it been more subtle.
  • 10 4
@skill7: you guys are funny. It is not directed at you Pinkbike shredders at all. Half of expensive bike owners couldn’t give a flying sht whether their fork has separate HSC and LSC, and 90% of MTB owners out there cannot bunnyhop. When chosing a bloody minivan you don’t wonder which company keeps it real. I’d chose a VW Multivan even if they had a video of a pack of ebikers being shuttled down a hill after they rode up with fanny packa filled with dope. Nobody in their right mind spends 50-80k $ for a vehicle, based on the content of a stupid commercial.

Also if you ask me making a Guiness record like that is R-worded as hell.
  • 5 0
@WAKIdesigns: I too would be inspired to buy a VW Multivan after watching that advert. It sounds f*cking hilarious.
  • 2 0
@fantaman: I was at the 24 hr DH @ Semmering in 2007 - a friend of mine rode the Hard tail class. All of the riders were absolute legends - doing 24 hrs of anything - let alone riding a bike, ain't easy!
  • 4 0
Shit was this sponsored, I thought they just loved the mercs
  • 1 0
@paulwatt: I didn’t read the article but the 3 min video was worth my time. I can put up with a little in-your-face advertising if it supports something cool like this. It likely wouldn’t have happened when it did without Mercedes footing the bill. Still, I’d be interested to hear the genesis of the idea... did Mercedes come up with the idea or did those dudes just want to destroy a crazy record? Pretty cool either way.
  • 2 0
@fantaman: looks like a cool event. To be fair the track is lit so a little different but the one year the winner doing 161laps is insane. Gondola must been super fast to keep up?
  • 2 0
@Boardlife69: there is more than black and white to sponsoring and marketing. Lots of companies manage to hit the sweetspot between advertising/entertaining and cringeworthy marketing BS and calling out Mercedes here is completely justified.

Maybe they can evolve
  • 4 0
Well, i bet they would be equally as fast if they took the gongola. The one in Schladming is properly fast actually.

Plus there have been People that did more in 24 Hours, just look at the results of the 24 h Downhill race in Semmering 2016:

Winner did 152 rounds with each 335 hm, equals about 50,920 m which is more than 32,796 m.

Dont get me wrong, nice for those two to have such a big projekt with Mercedes and a outstanding performance but they obviously didnt do much research.

Tecnically they are right because the effords in the 24 hr Downhill race in Semmering werent bonified by Guinness world records.

Anyway, heres the link to the result sheet:

@fantaman: thats what i thoght, so its World Record in SHUTTLING bikers up the hill actualy?
  • 1 1
I want TESLA to sponsor another attempt at that World guiness record done with E-bikes. Every run change of the battery at the bottom. And If they win, I want to see a video of Mercedes being put on landing pad of Falcon heavy module. The thing will not land, it will hover over the mercedes for 30 seconds, lift off and land next to it. Happy riders approach the pad with their Specialzied Levos and smile.

 From 2014:

"Our intention was never to set a world record that we thought would last. Mount 7 is the last place you would choose if your intention was the biggest possible number. There's no chairlift and it has a steep uphill that added 5180 feet of climbing to our day. The opportunity existed to start something official with Guinness and bring exposure to our sport, so we wanted to set the bar on a track that is notorious for its punishing nature and really defines what DH means to us. It can easily be beaten elsewhere, but we hope to see someone try to take the title where it began; Psychosis on Mt 7. We'll even let you try it in the dry." - Mark Haimes

By contrast, this record is the equivalent of those dudes who basically get Sherpas to carry them up Everest for a summit photo-op.
  • 7 0
 ^^^^^^^^^ truth ^^^^^^^^
  • 79 1
The Mt 7 attempt in Golden was in my opinion better as it poured rain and they had to climb the hike a bike section every time. Plus this seems pretty corporate, but I guess I am just an old fogey
  • 30 0
I was covering the event for vitalmtb when reg and mark did their attempt and let me tell you, it was no joke up there. Pitch black, pouring rain, steep terrain, slick areas of mud. Had a hard enough time riding down at a casual pace let alone riding 24 hrs straight... the morning was prime conditions though!
  • 25 0
Plus the fact that it's Mt 7. Those trails are insane. I mean Redbull Psychosis ended in part because some pros weren't willing to race the trails and conditions, but Rampage was fine... That says a lot.
  • 10 0
Agreed. Reg and Kram hold the real mtbing record IMO still. Mt. 7 or some flow / bike park horseshit is simply not the same contest. #EuroWorldRecord
  • 4 0
Also, it was no 'attempt' those boys have legit Guiness fame on their walls. They are true record holders and will be for a while I'd say.
  • 40 0
 Ain't no mount 7...
  • 25 0
Mt. 7 was a different beast altogether. And why not mention who had the previous record?
  • 17 0
Because a bike park trail doesn't compare to Mt 7 and they'd just look stupid only just scraping in and then comparing to a couple of Canucks who made it happen on one of the toughest DH tracks. Especially with all that #support from #mercedesbenz.
  • 24 0
Is Mercedes completely unaware that they make the single most coveted vehicle in the world of MTB? Nobody wants your Honda Ridgeline, show me some Sprinter porn!
  • 5 0
Yes, Merc, pick ups are for people that don't respect their bike. Sprinters are for those that like them enough to sleep with them.

For the next generation Sprinter please can you just get rid of all the leaks, make it wide enough to sleep across and sort out the rear brakes because they are made of cheese and squeak to much. Thanks.

*I have a converted Sprinter.
  • 3 0
It's a rebranded Nissan Navara. Missed opportunity for the Sprinter though!
  • 2 0
@slovenian6474: I'm actually more likely to buy it because it is a Nissan! My old Nissan was much better than the two more recent mercs I've had.

  • 25 3
The Mercedes looks like it has an impressive climb mode, but how many water bottles can it hold??
  • 5 0
It has cup holders, but no bottle cages, so zero I guess.
  • 15 0
Talk about truth in advertising... their little disclaimer at the end there was funny.
"The contents displayed are of a fictitious nature. Filmed for the purpose of advertising, solely professionals participated on a secure and prepared terrain. The contents do not in any respect correspond with the designated use of the vehicle. We expressly do not recommend such use."

I take that as meaning: look at how this truck Tokyo drifts around gravel corners; however, if you take yours off road, it voids the warranty.

smh
  • 17 0
A helicopter manufacturer should get in on this action. New record in 3...2...1...
  • 10 0
So... Reg / Kramz rode through the night in rain on the psychosis run no less..

And had to hike-a-bike...for parts of it... in the dark/ pouring rain... I recall sleet somewhere in there as well..

Non- pro riders ( from what it seems)

This:

Purely Mercedes lift assisted ..
Pro riders
Looks like an easier track in better conditions..
Tons of corporate sponsorship by the looks of it..

Looks like comparing apples to oranges...

No mention of the Alberta crew .. WTH

Go team Canada ! You guys rock ...

Yes, this is a feat .. but not comparable. ..in my mind.
  • 10 0
Not bikes but a new vertical ski record was also set recently, 23,864 meters by Killian Jornet, the difference is he skinned back up under his own power, no lift, no car! He is on YouTube Salomon TV live tonight as well as it happens.
  • 1 0
These guys would run out of time if they had to ride back up everytime, wouldnt even be close
  • 3 1
@OhsoGrizzly: yes because skinning/hiking is SO much faster than pedaling...
  • 5 0
Crazy side fact: Killian also skinned more than 120 miles in the process of climbing over 77,000 vertical feet while setting that record! Dude is from another planet. He also hit 71mph on one of the ski laps.
  • 1 0
Didn't some guys in NZ do a 24hr DH challenge where they climbed and descended on bike?

I get what you mean but killian was only doing an uphill acent and these riders were only doing a downhill record so if they had to pedal up it wouldnt count twords their goal and would run out of time in the 24hr span if you get what i mean@acdownhill:

 Way too over the top.

Also, save some coin and opt for the cheaper (and mechanically identical) Nissan Navara or Renault Alaskan.

 TWO WORDS: REG MULLET!

Congratulations to the new record holders. Many of the comments are about the commercialization of this article - but I’d make a comment to that the previous record holder Reg Mullet did the record attempt solo using chairlifts. To me there should almost be another category for this event, vehicle and chairlift categories. I’m surprised that the article did not in any way discuss/honour the previous record.
  • 3 1
Opps full of crap -they used a Ford raptor and there were two on them. Should have researched before speaking. A least they just mentioned the Ford Raptor.
  • 5 0
How did they set up their bikes? Cushy grips? What lights did they use? Were tires picked for speed or just grip during the redeye hours? Did they do anything to strengthen their hands and wrists for this kind of abuse? All this information would have made this article way more interesting to me.

From Mercedes, I would have been a lot more interested if there was technical information about the truck. What makes it an ideal vehicle for this - what makes it better than literally any other crew cab pickup? What's the suspension design? Is there a turbo, to avoid power loss at altitude? MTBers are gearheads; play to that. Don't just do this because you know bikes are expensive so riders must have money to spend on a truck.

An outdoors-oriented influencer I follow on Instagram was given or lent a Mercedes SUV to create content, and I thought it weakened her brand without strengthening theirs. Jarring to see this tough hiker posting pics of a shiny vehicle no one else will ever drive to those remote trailheads. It was similarly disingenuous.
  • 6 0
So lets all agree that reg mullet still holding the world record on the greates descend 100% a real bike trail. not a ski run
  • 4 0
well, i don't know about this. The riders got to rest and eat on the way up the hill which took longer then riding down. I remember when we were kids riding/racing each other all day 16 hour a day non stop. grabbed a slurpy from 7-11 and kept riding to the next 7-11 store way out in the middle of no where. Those were the days.

Guiness stopped recognizing records that put people's lives at risk such as most eating or most time without sleep. Perhaps it's time for Guiness to stop recognizing records that impact the environment as well like how many times you can drive a truck up and down a hill in 24 hours for no reason.

I find it somewhat hilarious how little they seem to be pushing that thing through this sponsorship. I dare say it's a lot more interesting to most of us than the truck.

If a non-MTB company wants our attention, they shouldn't hire non-MTB'ers to make a cringey video like this. How about hiring a production company that routinely does MTB stuff, you know, people who actually mountain bike and know how to produce a video MTB'ers will appreciate rather than roll their eyes at?

Then maybe you'll end up with something that actually gets shared around, accomplishing your goal, rather than something people make fun of in the Pinkbike comments section.
  • 1 0
Just think how much fuel was burned getting those vehicles up & down the mountain all day. Better than a helicopter no doubt...

Why not go green and use an ebike?

That's right... Mercedes is a sponsor! Gotta make those $$$.

 Pro's Mechanical Secret tricks:
-Tighten stem bolts bottom to top, ride it.
-Tighten stem bolts top to bottom.
-Also with try it with the handlebars bolts.
You will notice it feels different and also gives you different handling.
The Pros have a specific bolt tightening sequence to make the bike being capable to jump and ride faster.

How about a mention to the original crew that created and set the record - without a major company's support!

So basically, I just have to call up an automotive brand (let's say Toyota) and tell them I'm going for the new GWR in vertical descent, and I get a free day of shuttling in brand new cars and bike maintenance?

That's just a long as commerical...

Cool! Except for the resulting cyclist palsy both these guys are probably going to be suffering through for the next 6 months... But a world record!

My hands and arms hurt after 24 minutes of descending, pretty sure 24 hours had to be painful as hell!
  • 1 1
They really need to qualify this. Most vertical descended A: human powered climbing B: car assisted C: lift assisted D: ebike

doesn't seem like much of an accomplishment when you are only doing the fun part.

agree with the classifications in theory, to provide context to the achievement.

disagree with "doesn't seem like much of an accomplishment...."

If you've ever done any endurance sport for close to the 24 hour range it ceases being fun a loooooooong time before that, especially if it's repetitive like this. Also, maybe you have the finger, tendon, and forearm strength of a professional climber, but I don't. Even if the terrain isn't BC-certified gnargnar..... holy sh*t, this is insanely brutal on the body. Have you ever spend a day at the bike park casually clocking laps and still come out fresh at the end of the day? No.

@WasatchEnduro: Best i've done is two days in a row of open to close 30+ laps and just over 25 miles each day. Sure it takes it's toll, but i didn't have a support crew and massage either, nor did i have a park that allowed me to run it all night long. Now if you said, you have to climb your way to the top and then descend, well now that's a lot harder. I bet some park rat in whistler is doing the math right now to see if they could beat that, but we'll never know because they don't have MB money.

After reading the intro I didn't watch the video but enjoyed some of the comments. Probably shouldn't have mentioned the 50 people part.

Mercedes Benz HO: Hmmm, those mountain bikers seem to have money, we need to tap into that.
Mercedes Benz Marketing Dept: Hold my beer.

So with a faster car we can all probably break the record. Shrug.

So little content, so much bullshit... "a team of 50 people made the record possible" yeah right ????????????????????

Can’t finish it. Narrators voice was grating and the constant switch up of scenes about gave me a seizure.

 Um...... “tiredness”

How did that slip past the content editors?

Sellout bike site. Who ever pays the biggest bill first.

 40km, 1 run = approx 1km = 40 runs, 2 people = 20 runs per head, 24 hours = less than 1 run an hour ... what an achievment
  • 5 0
Pretty certain that they both did 40 runs together.
  • 3 3
We shouldn't promote this kind of stupid thing on PB..
  • 2 0
Yeah, sorta questionable accomplishment and over the top ad placement.
