Mar 8, 2010 at 15:12
by John Lee
After the Wattbike arrived in my house it has become a magnet for competition between friends - but who out of all my mates can set the fastest time over 1000 meters (1km)? Downhillers, XC riders, Dirt jumpers, climbers, musicians, bums, teachers, mums, dads, skaters, goths, chavs, BMX riders, everyone! - who is gonna set the fastest time over the next few months?

Let's see as we begin with the first batch of riders and results...

Is this an article or an ad? Come on, this sort of content belongs on facebook or something.

Here's some info... it costs £1850.

How noisy is it?
Is the software Windows only?

I'll stick with my £250 turbo trainer for now, thanks.

Watt a great ideah need an indoor machine for the winter. But really Nirvana poster oh my lord respect lolol looks like fun...

I'd rather get a trainier thingy that you put your road bike on. Cuz then you have a road bike too.
  • 7 0
 i want a go!
  • 2 0
I'll bring it to Cannock to a racers guild soon!
  • 4 0
I find it amusing that the downhillers all pretty much sit on top.

I think a BMX racer would have the best time over 1000

WTF? Why was my comment deleted? It was:
Whats the idea of buying a wattbike, which costs 2k £?
Whats better in this bike than other training bikes?
  • 1 1
comments are deleted by MODS if they feel the content was inappropriate etc - or your comment didnt load up properly. I didnt buy the bike it was given to me for training by wattbike.

I agree tom tom, It's a great training tool for BMX and DH racers.
  • 6 0
a track racer that trains specifically for doing kilos would kick any bmx racers ass
  • 3 0
that. track racers or roadie sprinters.
  • 1 0
a track racer, road sprinter and mtb power house is what I am. I would love a go at this challenge haha
  • 1 0
Obviously a track rider who specialised in the kilo would get the fastest time in real life! On the watt bike web page(I think) it said a rower holds the best time or power record on a watt bike.

my best kilo watt bike time is 1:02:something. It really hurt! It makes me feel a bit ill thinking about it.

It would be great to put the peak and average power readings from the tests too!

ask Chris Hoy to come show you how its done! No bmx'r or mtb racer will even come close nor any road sprinter. The man OWNS the 1000 meters! His power number will scare you. Dont know who he is? Google him and watch some video! Scary fast!
  • 1 0
I was just about to post this comment when I saw yours! Chris Hoy is crazy fast!

im thinking roadies because even after 150k they manage to sprint Blank Stare
  • 4 1
 A rower (a good one)?
  • 11 3
Oh yeah, because they could totally do it upside down and pedal with their arms. Duh!
  • 3 1
Uhh, dude, in rowing the legs are as important as arms..
  • 4 0
If you can row 2000m in under 7 minutes (or even 1000m in 3 and a half minutes) and your legs aren't burning, please correct me... (Directed at Kornowski)
  • 4 0
It's a good point, I didn't really take it into much consideration. My bad.
  • 1 0
I've got the 2000m row at 6.35, the pain varies between forearms and thighs- and i'd love to give that watt bike ago
  • 1 1
Rowers USe their arms one of the least things>I row ... road time trialers and racers would win
  • 1 0
I row! and i did a sub 7 minute 2km with my legs not burning... and, unless your rubbish, you use your arms much less than legs but still want to pound them in to set the boat nicely on the slide. nice time jumpingj btw...
  • 1 0
cheers nick, its not come easy like- proper winter training. Gone from 6.47 in December to 6.35 in March... I row a fairbit- and spinbike (combined with a fair amount of interval stuff).. Rowing is such a good (different) exercise for DH training- I got the idea from seeing articles about the top MX guys and seeing their custom Concept2 indoor rowers-Pimp setups with full mx handlebars to pull on
  • 1 0
yer i train daily aswell.. won my division of schools head of the river last weekend... 17 minutes of hell! im stuck on a 6:58.1 PB. should improve with summer sprint training though.
  • 1 0
Jumpingj, that is a very good time (the people who row a 2k in like 6 minutes [or even less] are, in my opinion, NUTZ!, they have a great fitness level though!) and nick-hawkins 6:58.1 isn't exactly a bad time anyway, my personal best is only ever so slightly better anyways. But i think the racers in the velodrome (is it 'track' racers?) would be fastest, personally.
  • 1 0
chilli-cheese.. where do you row? you don't do any wales national stuff do u? if so do u no sam lapage or fiennes davey?
  • 1 0
Im also pretty sure that rowing uses very similar muscles Smile i cant remember but there is very successful track rider who moved from rowing to track.

also have a friend whos a track rider whos time for 1k is 56 seconds im not sure how good that is compared to some people but yeah

owe what clubs do you row for ?
  • 1 0
 Shrewsbury- RSSBC..

Does anyone else have back problems from the combination of the two?
  • 1 0
I row for Penarth, South Wales (on the sea! yeah! we're not the biggest or the greatest, but...) And know i don't row for wales as of yet, but the welsh trials are coming up, and my coach says i can get in so, i may do soon... I can't say i do know those two either, but i may have seen them, but as i don't know them wouldn't have took any notice. And back problems? From rowing and biking? I did feel some pain before but i concentrated on my posture (for those long ergo's especially) and did some pilates every once and a while, and yeah, my back is fine now.
  • 1 0
Awww cool i should be going to welsh trails but at the moument im feeling very negtive towards rowing ;P so thats not great haha i row for monmouth comp haha yes i know Razz
  • 1 0
Any of you fellas heard of the (rowing) Dallas test... I've had a couple of go's at it, its a bit of a recovery/power test- I believe its quite popular with some of the rugby clubs?

Also do any of you know of any other good/fun little tests for the rowers? Maybe stuff that might be beneficial for DH training?
  • 1 0
fun doesn't tend to come into our training very much.. when our coach says 'today we're going to have some fun' it means a 4 mile race against the first 8 so isn't much fun at all..
Yer apparently wales is a bit of a cruise to get into but then again the 3 people I know who are doing it are pretty insane..
Were any of you guys at schools head or chester North head of the River? Will any of you be at Nat schools?
Im off on a rowing tour to america for 2 weeks in a weeks time.. doing some racing around Boston and moving up the east coast... should be good fun.
Ive never heard of the Dallas test.. we do a thing called the Glucker named after an american coach.. 20 strokes race pace 10 strokes paddle and rotates like that for 20 minutes.. seriously painfull after a while.
Oli345 is that the monmouth thats quite competetive or a different one?
  • 1 0
Yeah we are but our senior squad has got abit small recentent years got alot of j15s which look promising. getting the mix with alevels and rowing this year will be the stuggle we should be raceing at wallingford and marlow kinda the warm ups before henely really
  • 1 0
yer ill be at marlow and wallingford and marlow aswell.. last year i did 5 races in the one day at marlow! i could only see in black and white afterwards lol... are you racing in the temple challenge at henley or PE?

I got 29.3 for the 500m sprint on a Watt Bike, be interested to see what I can do with 1000m

FYI the Wattbike has way more logging info then most other exercise bikes costing more, like left/right leg balance, circular efficiency (i think its called?) i.e. how consistent your power out put through a full revolution between left/right in pulling/pushing the pedals etc

A BMX racer or a roadie sprinter would produce the fastest time. A roadie without a doubt, and probably by a massive, massive margin would produce the most wattage.
  • 2 1
I don't know. I would have my money on a 4X racer. Short sprints are where they excell. Or maybe a roadie, or a hockey player...
  • 1 0
what wattage were these guys averaging? I used to do compu-trainer races with one of the team sprint national champions at our shop. he would destroy any XC, DH, or BMXer.
  • 1 0
Yeah it would, I cant see it translating directly to real life though.

What watt did you get sk8kid33?
  • 1 0
im pretty out of shape. Over 10 mile rides on the computrainer I tend to average about 225-250 watts. I don't often pay attention to watts on sprints. I get spanked though all my co workers average 300+ on the 10ers

1 km run for exm in the trek is 1 minute but this result is very cool...nice jubb
