The Bike Park crew spent the whole summer building a new DH race course at Canyons Resort. It is the first new DH course to be cut in Utah in over 10 years. They were able to open it up to the public on closing weekend, and Demetri Triantifallou and Bryce Helbling burned it in with the Last Lap of the 2014 season.

 Hahahahaha!!! xD

It is the best track on the utah series, fun wise and difficulty wise. Mark Kugel and the bike park crew did an amazing job.

And they did eat shit hard in the making of this video!

Same as saying "One More Lap" to counteract the badness always say "Another Lap".

I must be the only person who starts downhill runs by simply taking my hands off the brakes and not pedalling like a madman into the run....

 now we are two!

 make that 4

Valid point, but the very beginning just ain't steep. In fact, the start is actually uphill from the lift (just a bit, but they didn't show that in the vid)

I don't pedal because it isn't steep, but because I lost all power climbing.

Excellent name there sir... Faith Hope love

Ha, thanks, but it's not from THAT King's X. But since you're familiar with them, I grew up just down the road from Ty. One of my favorite players ever... his technique, style and tone was out of this world.

I was out watering plants when I was a kid, when an old woman stepped over the garden hose as I was pulling it across her path. She announced "King's X, I'm coming through"! This was long ago, way before I had the internet to look it up but I was aware of the band. So I asked her what she meant. She explained that when she was young, she would use that as an admittedly superstitious phrase to momentarily protect her from harm.

If I were the least bit superstitious, I could see maybe saying it before guinea pigging a big gap. I've always just liked the story and the way it sounded as a phrase.

I wish they would have opened this up a few week earlier so I could have ridden it. I'm hoping the rumors are true and Deer Valley will have Gravity Logic build new trails next season as I'm not really into flow trails, gasp.
  • 3 0
from what Ive heard DV is going pursue some of the things gravity logic told them to do. Ive heard from friends who work up there is that this years project is a beginner/intermediate flow trail. If they do it right that would be a huge plus for PC the beginner flow trails at the canyons are not that fun and really short. we'll see you know how the rumor mill is

^ That's pretty tight because last I thought DV didn't give a shit about mtbing. Maybe they finally saw some financial gain in it. I've been hearing about Canyons putting in a legit DH run and this video didn't disappoint. It looks like they finally nailed it and still looks sick even though its a very freshly cut trail in the vid.

and sick video, those guys are making it look easy.

Seems like canyons in coming along as a park, but it feels like they're still kind of lacking in the jump/flow department. I know park city is an awesome mtb destination, but why can't one of these resorts just park itself out hard? All the resorts should just create some sort of collective joint venture where they all share the related profits and get on with it. Enough with the feasibility studies and limited attempts at a bike park from all these places.

I dont know about most people but when I goto the canyons its to ride jump trails that are really fun. They arent building a ton of trails but what they have been building is tracks that are for serious riders. The co operative is now vail owns pcmr and canyons and I hope they step it up. Surely its going to be better than the 2 resorts being tied up in a lawsuit with one another.

@hatton with over 400 miles of trail--SINGLETRACK--and the world's only IMBA gold destination... I think they are right on par. Improvement takes time my friend.

@reignonme You'll notice i said park city is an awesome mountain bike destination. However, its a pretty mediocre DH destination. Given the quality of terrain and number of lifts in SLC, they need a real bike park

@scott-townes @digitalsoul Deer valley doesn't car about bikers. $36 for a day pass in the summer, and I hear its going up! Lower fire swamp is only so good. Most of us are getting/have passes for Canyons because of the great jump park they already have (and the discount when you get an Epic pass).

That being said, I think PCMR has the best terrain of the 3 resorts for a proper DH trail. That trail under Crescent lift is a decent start.

@hatton It seems that you feel this way not because it's true, but because you haven't had anyone show you the resident DH insanity in PC. If you know where to look, there's plenty of burly DH, right under your nose. In fact, despite what a lot of (mostly ignorant) folks think, DV still has some of the best old-school DH access in the area; technical, wild riding that'll scare the shit out of most anyone. Why don't you hit me up next summer and I'll show you how 'mediocre' the DH riding is?

I agree with @hamncheez -- there's a ton of amazing DH terrain all over, and PCMR has done a pretty solid favor for the community by not only turning eyes away from building, but actually endorsing some new trail work over the last two years, all over the mountain.

I'm not saying good DH trails don't exist, and good flow trails don't exist, its just that its not really centralized. Yes you can ride all of it in park city, but you can't rip park laps all day at a mountain and have 3 or 4 race runs, 3 or 4 big flow/feature lines, 2 or 3 fast intermediate flow trails, some old school gnar trails etc. I know it all exists in the SLC area, but theres something to be said for ripping laps and still being able to switch it up. Theres a few tiny mountains on the east coast that are better bike parks than anything that exists in UT, and it has nothing to do with the available terrain, demand or infrastructure.

@hatton I see your point. However, I don't think Park City as a whole is trying to be a DH destination.

i lived in SLC the 1st season of touched by an uncle, '95 maybe. there wasn't shite to ride back then. mill creek canyon, or a long schlep down to st. george/moab. glad to see there's a scene developing. looks like a good one, too. i need a road trip...sigh.

Zooming out on the above map, I became excited, then disgusted at the amount of bike parks/trails you guys have out there!

Big ups to Demetri and Bryce, two local kids sending it who aren't afraid of much -- if you don't know these guys, you should look 'em up. Smile

Can't wait to ride this track next year, and massive thanks to crazy Kugel and the crew for continuing to push the DH scene in Utah!

Demetri, Greek roots judging by his last name. Both riders are great and fast!

 Sigh... is it spring yet?

So yes, it is that new trail?
  • 1 0
Yes, it's the new DH race trail down the front face, @hamncheez. Smile
