Darren Berrecloth Broken Back - He'll Be OK

From Darren:
Well hello there to all. So I just returned from a epic trip to Argentina filming for the TV show. the weather was perfect for shooting so I called up sterling to see if he was available and he said hed be over the next day. I built this tree to tree air on these two massive cedars in one of the greenest lichen filled forests I know of. Myself and Sterling shot this stunt all day until we were satisfied. Once again I was impressed with Sterl's shots. So its been five days since that shoot and I've been riding my trails a bunch which are running so good right now. The only bummer thing is that I've been riding by myself since there's nobody around to ride with. Even though I've been having fun sessions with me and my ipod.

Part of Darren's private trail.

With contest season just around the corner I've been stressing about dialling in my tricks so I don't look like a chump. So I've been trying to be smart and not try any hard tricks when there's nobody around and good thing cuz yesterday I asked Megan to watch me ride my contest set in the yard while I tried some front flips. You know sometimes its just really hard to put yourself in the right mind frame to try hard tricks when your riding alone but I at times can push through it so I went for a fronty and I knew I was underotating but I didn't think it was that underotated I also got pushed in the wind which made me come up a little short. I landed pretty much flat on my back and knocked the wind out myself. Its been a few years since I've done that and as I stabilized my breathing I knew that something was wrong.1 hour later I'm in a CT scan getting barrelled.

Doc says I broke my t7 t8 and. T10 vertebrae. Now here I am once again laid up in a hospital.

Wood kicker behind the machine - front flip training zone.

The outcome of this from my perspective is, just another bump in the road and I'm glad I have no complications. I do miss having a good riding scene with tons of people to shred with and also wish I had a foam pit to practice on instead of trying stuff on dirt.

bigquotesGoing down and injuring yourself is a huge part of the sport, if you're on the edge of riding you go down, and every once in a while, you go down hard - Darren Berrecloth (NWD10)

He's lucky it wasn't worse. That's a drag for sure - any injury, but I can't help but wonder - how many of these injuries (maybe Darren's back as well) could have been avoided with the proper use of pads - true some bones will break regardless, (and you can't do much for muscle or ligament damage) but a lot of the lesser injuries could be avoided - anyway, I love my 661 body armor when I'm DHing! What little weight or immobility in movement is well worth it when you tag the ground! Heel well my friends!
  • 31 7
Gotta agree with ya on the armor thing , even if it can be slightly restrictive , uncomfortable and sweaty it's no where as uncomfortable as having a limb in cast !

Heal fast Darren!

EDIT : Woops I hit negative prob by mistake !!
  • 57 13
Ain't no pads out there that will prevent a broken back. Get well soon, 'Claw.
  • 10 4
I can see the benefit for sore, dont get me wrong there.
But when im riding i dont like the feel of it, spesh on stuff im comfortable with.

The way i see it, and impact with the ground is a impact with the ground, regardless of protection, landing on rocks and roots is where armor comes in.

Heal fast Darren! Salute

He didn't land on a rock and crack vertebrae. That's like saying you wont break your leg if you have shin pads on. Pads are simply for abrasion and impact protection, and even at that they are very limited. Sounds like you guys both need to break more limbs to really understand. Hell, I could argue the OTHER side of it and mention that I've NEVER broken a bone without armor, I had armor on for all of my major injuries.
  • 25 2
Hard shell pads like knee/shin, chest armor, can in fact protect against broken bones by distributing force. Not likely it would have helped here though, thats for sure.
  • 3 5
dont think you got what i ment there. Im the same, only brusing with out pads, Broken collar bone, arm, hand all with pads on. I feel slower and alot bulkier with it on, thats y i dont wear it apart from on realy gnarly stuff
  • 5 2
I agree. I only wear knees and full face/gloves 90% of the time.
  • 8 0
im not that solid! haha Knee pads, full face and neck brace all the time when DH Not upper body stuff much
  • 4 0
I want a neck brace for dh, I just havent made that investment yet.
  • 9 1
A few years ago I used to wear slip on knee pads that had a thick padding for the knee. I liked them because the mobility was great and Im not using lift serviced trails, I have to pedal to the top. That was untill I went over the bars and landed on a rock knee first............had to have that knee drained and could barely walk for weeks. So now I wear the 661 Kyle Straits that have a harder plastic shell in them for the knee cap and thicker padding than the ones I used to wear- especially like the padding on the sides. I wear them every time I ride my bike. Still cant get me to put shins on though - despite some deep gashes- I just hate them Smile
  • 8 0
Im with you there! Kyle Straits are a good solid pad
  • 13 0
Someone get that man a phone charger!
  • 15 0
i knew this would end up in a little kids arguement.
  • 3 1
Guys, this thing isnt for arguing about armour, its about how unlucky barrecloth is, unlucky, get well soon dude Smile
  • 5 8
'He's lucky it wasn't worse'- He wasn't lucky, he broke his back.. If he was lucky he would have walked away
  • 3 0
Semenuk ate a sh!t load of pineapple for his broken arm, said it worked.... Give it a go Darren! lol Smile

Wish you a fast recovery bro
  • 1 0
unlucky! i was looking forward to watching him this year, always lays down some sick tricks!
  • 4 0
dont wworry about all these tricks kids are doing, you can still go much much bigger with way more confidence than anyone out there! hoping for a speedy recovery !
  • 5 1
if he landed on his back on a lip a backplate would have helped a lot
  • 3 3
Coming soon - Leatt full torso brace, prevents broken backs guaranteed!
  • 3 1
Haters gunna hate! Bearcloth is a legend and I wish him every bit of goodness to get better as I want to see him shred like the f**kin hero he is.

Redbull Rampage! Lets see that again! lets see that again! lets see that again
  • 9 0
Red bull rampage is not on this year.

Combee - he could have come out of this alot worse. never walking again because he landed just that little bit different would turn his life up side down.

And regarding the knee/shin guards. A shin guard will defiantly stop you from braking your leg. if you are coming down a loose trail, and your feet blow off. you fall off to the right of your bike and slam your knee/shin onto a rock the side of a soccer ball. your shin guards are going to stop you from destroying yourself, i guarantee you.

some people ride just the knees, but when i look at the shin guard part of my shin guards, there is grooves and scratches everywhere. and that's on a hard plastic. i don't even want to know what that would do to my flesh. they might not look as good but i sure as shit prefer that to anything else.
  • 1 0
i completely agree. shin/knee pads are the way to go. I dont really wear all the excess stuff like elbow pads and chest protectors because I feel like it hinders your riding capabilities. plus if you get abrasions and shit on your arms it always ends up looking pretty bamf.
  • 2 0
Yer i think knee and shins are very important, cus i used to ride without them and slipped a pedal twice and got massive cuts up my shin and had to go to hospital both times to get them stitched up
  • 1 0
Honestly, my armor has saved my ass numerous times. Hitting trees, rocks, ditching. In my opinion, i would rather have my riding capability "Hindered" then say, hit a tree and get stitches on my arms and back and stuff. And I ride with armor, it makes me feel more confident that if i do crash, it wont hurt.
  • 3 0
the trick is to not crash!
haha

i do see your point, and i have nothing against people wearing armor, coz at the end of the day, its you that will poetically get hurt, so you do what ever you think is good/necessary.

like i said before i dont like armor, i find that i crash more with it on. Helmet, knee pads and neck brace are still necessities tho
  • 2 0
yeah defiantly the, i never go out with out full face, knee guards and neck brace. i feel naked without my neck brace!
  • 20 0
 Get well soon man!

It's really unfortunate to see bearclaw go down like this, he's learning some pretty gnarly stuff at the moment, but as he said, just another bump in the road. Get well soon man, best of luck when you're all healed up!

wow..didnt know that rubber can break..

Only the Claw tries new tricks to dirt not to a foam pit. Hard as nails, you know he will be back. The world of mtb is praying for a speedy recovery. Get back asap.

It's so true what he says on going down is part of the sport and sometimes, you go down big. I've been riding for about 5 years now and every single time I go down, it's been hard for me to get my mental game back in gear. The constant fear of getting badly injured used to drive me away from doing the big stuff. But watching so many pros and non-pro riders go down and get back up is motivation in itself to just go out and send it. Like he said, it's just a bump in the road that I'm sure all of us come across in the sport. I guess it's true when they say that nothing in your lifetime that's worth accomplishing or having will ever come easy. Get better Darren!
  • 1 0
yeah man i have the same problem but i never thought of it like you did, i was always a pussy
  • 3 0
Nothing is out... Darren is in!! Darren kicks some serious ass. I have never met anyone more dedicated than Claw! Always working to do better.. always building... always training. Darren.... you are one very amazing person.. one who kids can look up to. Thanks for being such a great idol to many. We look forward to many more kick as* years Darren! NOW GET BETTER QUICK... AND KICK SOME DIRTY ASS! ~Smile
  • 3 0
@ everyone goin off about body armor...pretty hard to do a front flip when you look like the Michelin Man from all the padding...there's a reason slope riders like to shred in tees and jeans. Of course it doesn't protect you at all, but that discipline doesn't really work with one all decked out in armor. Far too restricted movement. You just have to understand that it's a more dangerous discipline than many others. Heal up soon Darren, can't wait to see you up and shredding again!
  • 2 0
The Claw is broken,..... gutted for him! Get well soon Darren!! I guess he won't be riding at Chatel Slopestyle this year now? Was looking forward to seeing him riding there, although knowing how he pushes through injury and heals faster than us mortals perhaps he'll be there!! Smile
  • 1 0
I've seen him last year in Chatel, his riding was f*ckin awesome, I hope seriously he will be ok in july to run the Mountain Style, he's one of the best freeriders in the world.

Good (and fast)recovery Darren! Salute
  • 2 0
Totally agree mate, The Claw rocks, fast recovery please!!!! Smile
  • 3 0
Hey Claw, wishing you the best. you're an inspiration to many, including myself. heal fast! and here's to hoping you have some HOT nurses!!. =)

recover fast, and strong, bro. I hope to see you riding soon.
  • 2 0
Wow can't believe he said he was practicing to not look like a chump at the contests. Yo Clothman, you have surpased everyone in complete bike skills and could never look like a chump at any contest. Even someone that dialed can get nervous about upcoming events. Heal up quick and don't sweat these young huckers, your og status in the mtb world.
  • 1 0
Very unfortunate for my favourite rider to be down like that. I recently nearly broke my neck diving into a pool so at least you're not dumb like me. If you ever need someone to ride with i'd love to join ya, haha. I suck at jumping right now but I'm trying to get better. Get better soon 'Claw!
  • 1 0
This is getting to the point where this is just getting dumb, the prize money sucks,as does the pay to risk life and limbs. Most of these guys are not going to be on a bike by the time there 40 due to all these injuries. Then there just going to get fat, depressed, and unless there parents have big $$$ its not going to be pretty....use the sport, dont let it use you !!!!
  • 5 0
nice recover for you....hope you´re ok till Whistles Crankworx!!!!
  • 6 0
 Ops.....Whistler
  • 1 0
hope your all healed up in time for your contest. yes its pretty hard to push yourself when you ride by yourself ,i know how that feels i pretty much ride by myself every day. sucks. get well soon bearclaw aug 6-7 woooooooooooo see ya there.
  • 1 0
Yo Bear! I broke my back xmas morning 2010 (L1-L4) and I was on a road bike after 3 months, back running 3.5 months, and I'm riding trails now. Definitely not 100% (back muscles still really weak), but I'm sure you'll be alright!! Get some video games to pass the time laying in bed!
  • 3 0
If only they made a biking video game! Come on even an EA BMX (like skate) would just be phenomenal.
  • 1 0
i know exactly how he feels, im out for the whole season with 5 broken vertebrae from a snocross incident. i got 4 titanium screws and rods put in. doc said im out for the whole summer and most of fall. im just waiting until im aloud to be 40ft in the air again. darren, if you see this, get well soon from another injured rider
  • 1 0
Darren--so glad you're (relatively) OK. Speedy recovery! Appreciate your style and work ethic since first saw you in Roam.

One question, and not to sound like a noob, but why wouldn't Specialized supply you with a foam pit? Or something? Surely that won't work in all circumstances...but something along those lines sounds seems necessary (not just nice to have).

Also appreciate the lack of riding buddies That's not only good for safety, but it's so much more fun (heh...the Follow Me movie comes to mind). For me it's work, kids, sketchy timing and most of my friends in the same boat. Need a way to find other people in my area willing to ride (with location, timing, ability, and style all kinda factored in there). Sort of a where-the-ladies-at iPhone app kinda thing for mountain biking. Where-my-riderz-at...

In any case, your situation made me think about safety and riding with others. Damn, Claw. Even laid up in a hospital bed you post on Pinkbike and get people excited about riding and designing for people/places/stuff. Godspeed!
  • 4 0
Get well soon, gotta win the crankworx comp eh!!

gotta say its unfortunate and sad to see darren in the hospital, he's right though "injury is a huge part of the sport" and for that we send our wishes and a fast recovery to him. good luck man!
  • 1 0
We'll be praying for you to get well soon. I was pretty bummed to hear this and very disappointed to see some many of the comments about the argument of armor or no-armor in the comments instead of well wishes.

Play hard; pay hard. It's unlucky that you're injured. It's lucky, however, that you can still feel and move your toes. Indeed, I have a keen sense of the obvious. Get well soon, good sir.

This may sound weird, but go see a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner ASAP!! They have a lot more healing ideas than pain pills and anti-inflammatories!! If you ever need any physio advice hit me up!! Stay positive!! Dr Seth
  • 2 0
Not really weird actually, however there is no evidence to back up their practices when done alone. I highly recommend going to a good physical therapist as they are trained at a doctorate level in evidence based practice. As you continue to heal and build strength from the atrophy with the lats, multifidi, and traps, you may also want to look into alternative therapies such as Chinese Medicine as a complement to your therapy. Relaxation exercises can be very helpful in the healing process from the neurological standpoint. Good luck and God bless you in your healing!
  • 1 0
I am a doctorally trained PT. I found "A Tooth From The Tigers Mouth" an awesome intro to TCM and helped me through some tough injuries. Agreed though that the combo is the best approach!! I've always been a big fan of the Claw and would love to help get him back ASAP.
  • 2 0
Hope you get well soon it would be a bummer if you couldn't ride crank worx
