You mean 1,2,3 and 4th?. From what we "see", Rachel trains harder than most of the other female athletes. Sponsorship aside, she does have a lot of help not to mention two brothers that absolutely kill it in the biking world to push her through any nervousness. I think the idea of a Lindsey Vonn desire to ride against the men could be a reality for some, but only just a small few. Rach has many things going for her right now, I think this season she'll be the only one to knock her off the top....maybe another MSA scandal like last year?? Best to keep inside the tape girl ;-)

Good luck to all the riders, especially STEVIE SMITH!! GO CANADA!

Freaky strange - last night I had a vision of Gee crashing! I hope I didn't curse him. Gee you have my permission to come to my house and kick my ass!

I was filming the top section to half Way and Gee was really pinning it, so for sur it must have happened in high speech section. Afterwards, i saw him getting physio at the GT pits.

 Where's Peaty this round?
  • 25 0
Gwin is (almost) back.. But its too late for my dirt fantasy DH league.. Rock bottom points.

Wishing SH to win it though, glad to see him healthy and fast, one of the only flat pedal to the metal racers left.
Also podium for SikMik.. He's one of the nicest guys out there..

Cant wait for this sunday, hopefully no problem again with the live broadcast!

Thanks pinkbike, redbulltv, and all the media Smile
  • 7 0
Pretty annoying how so many people are thinking there must be something wrong with Gwin just because he's not winning everything. The way he talks about his riding, he is back and has been for weeks. Agree with you on who you wish to win though, would be great to see Hill back up on top of that podium again.

Perhaps Danny will get his second win.

How many guys have had a top level win and never quite made it to repeat winner over the years?

I'd be happy to see any of those blokes win again. Gee doesn't need the points, so he can have 2nd or 3rd place to keep the sponsors and fans happy. I don't know about you, but I'd love to see Hill back in 1st place one more time (and it isn't happening at PMB).

  • 2 0
Man, it's been Two years now since Thirion is in the top 10 or Top 15... So don't talk shit about him. Besides, this track is completely different from Andorra. It's damn fast and flowy but not technical, with I think a good part of pedaling.... You can't compare as this track don't really suit to Remi. But we'll see for the finals, who know, it's mind game for now.

OFF topic not sure where to place it .. Why do most of the video editors put these disco, rave, pots n pans sound tracks that unless you are mentally impaired or on extacy can enjoy. .. Are they DEF ???? Those noises make me sick !. Do people actually listen to these awful sounds before they ride to ''get in the mood'' ?? CAN PINK BIKE PLEASE HAVE A POLL ON THIS TOPIC ..

 Go Steve Smith!!!!!!!
  • 7 1
Gee crashed on fastest part of track and only 9 seconds down! Sunday is going to be good!!
  • 6 5
He was down 7.5 seconds at split 1, slower by 4km/h at speed trap, down 8.8 seconds at split 2, and down 10 seconds at finish. He may have fallen in first segment, but he didn't make up any time on the rest of the course.
  • 7 2
And how exactly is he supposed to make time up when he lost all speed and momentum! I wasn't saying he will thrash strive like it sounds like your suggesting just stating a fact and saying Sunday will be a good race!
  • 3 2
I just found it odd that he didn't make up any time in the later tree sections or anything, he got farther and farther behind.
  • 15 0
But that's what happens after a crash. Its difficult to get back up to speed and stay on pace, let alone make up time after a crash. One is the actual physics of it. Once the rider loses momentum its takes some time to pedal and get back up to speed. On top of that there's the mental aspect. After a crash, I'm sure the mentality changes. Gee knows at that point he's going to be down the list a bit anyway so he's probably not going to be going balls to the wall through the rest of the track.
  • 6 0
Depends how bad the crash was, he might have been a bit beat up. He didn't do too badly either, he went from 23rd at split 1 to 18th at the finish. A bit of damage limitation...
  • 6 0
Ya know , some times crashes hurt ...
  • 4 1
Hardly surprising he didn't catch up. Who rides well after a crash?
  • 4 3
Maybe the crash will be all in his head come Sunday Wink Stevie FTW
  • 2 0
remember, gee had one of the nastiest crashes of the season last year at msa. he finished 4th in finals. anywho, hoping for smith or hill ftw.
  • 1 0
Not to mention crashing at 60 km. doesn't exactly feel good either probably hurt at least a little bit
  • 1 1
Woo Stevie quicker in the moist than Gee in the dry Wink
  • 2 0
Yeah that was impressive , going by the times I think gee was lucky it rained otherwise he would of been maybe 5th.
  • 2 0

he won't even get top 10, his mind seems broken at the moment.
  • 6 0
Broken? He just got fourth - beat Minnaar who is always a threat - that's a pretty bold statement. I'm pulling for Gee - hope he isn't badly injured and can race full on, without the crash being in the back of his mind.
  • 3 0
I would guess Gee is fine since he crashed at the top of the track and then put together what looked like a fairly solid run the rest of the way. If the guy can survive what happened to him last year in practice and come back for a 4th I'm sure he'll be ready to go Sunday.

If you crash and still finish less than 10 seconds down on a pinned 66km/h Steve Smith (on home soil and the sickest bike), you're not banged up too badly.

Not sure about Gwin's mindset though. Let's face it, he never won on the Yeti, killed it on the Session, and now is doing nothing on the Demo. It's the bike, not the rider. I'm buying a Session when they release a lower spec one.

does jeff realize these numbers are in kilometers per hour?

Did you SEE the helmet cam preview of the course? Youd be hitting 55kmh on that first section riding the brakes.

80kmh, or 50mph, on a road bike, is easily achievable for even a weekend warrior lol

  • 2 0
Shame there's no qualification live feed on.
  • 3 5
What is more surprising: Top 10 = 10 Europeans; Top 20 = only 5 countries, and what are the causes of this?
Is this the result of superior talent training programs in these 5 countries / Europe, or is this mostly a sign that the sport isn't as international as thought?
  • 21 8
most americans just dont give a shit about DH or mtb in general. too many other sports and not enough places to ride/train. Plus I can buy a bad ass yz450 for the same price I can get a DH bike for!?!
  • 11 1
 Very sad but true.
  • 3 1
@rlucky82: There are three Americans in the Top 20. I personally find it more amazing that Top 20 has only 5(!) countries than that Top 10 only has Europeans.
  • 14 3
It's got nothing to do with too many other sports and no where to train. There are plenty of DH's in the US but the majority ride manicured bike parks all the time. Try riding in UK, we make do with 2min max downhill runs. The other problem in the US is down to there isn't enough DH series like there used to be and it's a massive country so it's hard to travel to each one unlike the UK.
  • 4 1
You should also consider the density of population... Let's say 0.5% of population rides DH. We are under 40 millions in Canada and we are a laaaarge country. Same "geographic" size in europe probably contains ten times the people. you get to the point of more people riding. But this is a very "hypothetic" tough.
  • 8 1
Sorry, but that's just not true. Most downhill trails accessible for most riders remain unmanicured singletrack. I'd say the absence of quality local racing series is the biggest factor.
  • 10 1
In Europe, cycling is just a more accepted "adult" sport. Look at the overall standings for pro sports in general say for the Olympics. Americans consistently bring home a large majority of the medals. The problem in the US is kids are pulled in so many other directions and MTB is only nurtured to a small few. Look at the NBA, NFL, MLB...benchwarmers there make $400k per year. Cycling in the US is still often considered a kids sport. We have plenty of Mountains here with World Cup level course potential. Hell, the NORBA series in it's prime was moving the right direction. USA Cycling now is just a big joke and pathetic.

I am not saying this tooting the USA's horn or making excuses. We have a ton of great athletes here. However, I, and probably a good many Pinkbike fans, are jealous of the development programs and stature of cycling in Europe compared to the US.
  • 9 0
Id agree that the huge moto scene in the US draws attention away from mtn biking. When nearly every town or county in the US has an OHV park for moto but bike trails are extremely scarce it doeant draw the kids in when they are young.
  • 4 0
it all boils down to the culture. In Europe, cycling is a normal part of society. Whereas in NA its a hobby. When that's bred into you as a child then how will you perceive it growing up?

But yea mx is huge in the US, namely Cali. Its just more accessible and popular.
  • 7 0
mi-bike the geogapher, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Canada are not in Europe.
  • 2 0
dirtslayer, my observation was about the women's field.
  • 17 5
America has always thumbed its nose at the world it terms of being different for only difference sake. World drinks tea, we drink coffee, world use metric system. we use stupid standard system. It's no wonder why most americans are math deficent. World plays football, we create a different hands football, world like road racing/ MotoGP/F1, we like circle track Nascar/Supercross/NHRA. We only do and like what we create, minus golf and hockey don't count... see how that works . All sports in America are spectator driven (televised able), you can't pack 20,000 people around a road course or to watch a cycling race. Everything has to be held it a building of some type to accommodate TV and ticket sales. Remember America is a young country that really doesn't have a sports culture before radio/TV days. America is really an island with it's inhabitants believing they are the center of the universe...Hence the term given to us by most of the world, "Ugly American". Sorry for getting deep on you guys.
  • 3 3
Personally i think uk geology and weather makes almost every real DH track more technical producing a better base of young skilled DH riders
  • 6 4
DrthVadr---Yes, we are different. I am proud of that. Are there dumb Americans? Yes, plenty. However, there are plenty of great people here. Are there dumb Europeans? Yes there are plenty. However there are plenty of great people there as well. Is NASCAR in circles...yeah it is. However if you think the engineering and people running the show are all 'Bubbas" you are sorely mistaken. Are stadiums sports popular here? Yes. AND they are even BIGGER in Europe and the rest of the world. Yes, the NFL rules here. But Soccer world wide makes the NFL look tiny. Point is stadium sports (advertising/TV) rule the world, not just in the US.
Europe is smaller that the US physically. That is why mass cycling & mass transit has thrived better there holistically than is has here. It is only regional here.

I know it is fashionable to bash everything American....but it gets a little cliché after a while and seems very uneducated. You make a great point about America still being relatively young and we are. As timsim07 says above, we have actually better variety and geology for DH that Europe does, it's just that our cycling as a whole isn't the same beast it is in Europe.
  • 2 0
mi-bike, mi-bad. you are correct sir.
  • 4 6
bman33 I love the US. I think the World would be a shitty place without America.
  • 1 0
@timsim. The US encompases. Practically every type of land foemations and climate. So there is no lack of opportunity based on conditions. it all boils down to money and marketing. Hense AMA supercross and motocross are seen as next level. Its where americas focus is when it comes to outdoor sports.
  • 3 2
@cthorpe. I know you have a massive variety. it just seems that a lot of US tracks are generally more speed and jump orientated when compared to the vast majority of UK tracks. I'm probably completely wrong but meh
  • 2 0
@timsim07--good point. a lot of bike parks here have lots of jumpy stuff. It is the fashion here. However, I live in Colorado and there is lots of gnarly rocks & World Cup type riding, it just isn't as "in fashion" right now. I am originally from the East Coast of the US and there is lots of wet, muddy, rootty UK type riding there as well. Again, not as "in fashion". I have a good friend in Lisbon N. Ireland and have ridden there a few times with him. Roots and mud EVERYWHERE. I can def see why the UK riders are good in mud. Anyway...cheers! See everyone at Crankworx!
  • 3 0
A new yz450 is like 8,500 USD. You can get a DH bike for a lot less. If you think you can only get a downhill bike for over 8 grand, you've been hitting the sauce WAY too hard and should check into AA because you can get a new DH bike for an absolute fuck load less. The market caters to the high end and the low end. Products exist for EVERY single financial demographic. Stop acting like the high end is all we get and are forced to buy. Because that's BS. I wish people would put on their logic caps every now and then because we are all a lot smarter than this.
  • 2 1
It's just about culture. If not many people ride bikes, not many people will be world class bike riders. The US team is shit at football, thats because hardly anyone plays it. The does the UK even have a baseball team? It's a question of numbers and investment in a sport. More people participating = more chance of a world class player or team.

To me, the most shocking thing is the popularity of football in England contrasting with the shitness and continuous failure to deliver silverware of the national team. I think the problem there lies in (a) the general population being more fans of watching the game on TV while drinking beer as opposed to actually playing the game, and (b) the administrators and clubs being more interested in amassing personal wealth from the club game than developing the grassroots with a view to a successful national team. Cap foreign players, it's the only way to put English football back on the map! Yeah!
  • 1 0
A 2013 YZ450F is like $13,000 AUD here haha, god dammit.
  • 1 0
Crap! Canada is huge and Steve Smith trains on Prevost a 10+ min Dh run in the most spread out country, with the best bike parks in the world! Your logic is flawed.
  • 1 0
 Um wrong place ignore me!
  • 1 2
@cyrix the prices of new ones might be that, but if I had $2000 to spend and I could get a six year old mx bike or a crap new DH bike, or a decent two year old one, I'd go for the motocross bike if I had somewhere to ride it. I mean, its got an engine. You don't have to pedal it and motorbikes are much more fun than mountain bikes.
  • 1 0
I kinda agree, but that last part is arguable. Remember that most DH bikes weigh about 80 kilos less, which means that crashing on a motorbike is alot less fun than crashing on a MTB.
  • 1 1
True, but it's got an engine! Braaap! I had a DT125 when I was 17, bought it for 20 quid. Best bike I've ever owned for the fun factor. More fun than my R6. More fun than any MTB I've ever had. Fuck it, I'm going to buy another one next week.
  • 1 0
I'm just gonna get a CRF50, ride the shit out of it, and have fun ahaha
  • 3 0
Not enough local events or WC. For that matter , it's called World Cup for a reason and all we get is sea otter , fucking weak The WC season needs to have a lot more races , 7or 8 races is pathetic for the entire world
  • 2 0
Completely agree with you dude, should be getting atleast 20 or so per season!

Just Lol. Can i also say that this season gwin is back from which he came? HUH? Do you really think my thought is relevant by sayin' that?? Think before talking shit.
  • 1 0
Oh AKsel, dont get your panties in a knot because someone questions whether or not a guy that podiums once has what it takes to remain there. You're guys are french I get it.You may notice the question mark at the end of my statement which is meant to induce conversation/debate. That's why we are here no? Say what you will about Gwin, I believe he know a think or two about podiums
  • 1 0
i was just sayin' that the level of Thirion is far from the 31st place, even if he come back to his "normal" level. Man you can be sure it's about top ten or top 15 in general.
  • 1 0
Yeah i'm sure, it's been Two years now that he pretty much stand in the top 15

Bullshit if u hit over 50km hr on a dh trail I would be surprised I rode for a season with a computer on my bars 91 woulda been a error on the gun bud!
  • 2 1
Ya at sun peaks average speed was ~80-85km
  • 3 1
@jeff444 sorry man, I guess you just gotta speed up a little more haha. Idk if the results have the speed trap on em but you can find out some where I'm sure haha. obviously you have never ridden sunpeaks the kids in u15 boys where even hitting like 75k
  • 3 1
There's also an another fact that is mindblowing: the average speed of Steve's run was about 45km/h!!!!!!! This. is. insane.
  • 2 4
Sorry bud he said a trail! Not a mountain dh! Ur not hitting 66km on a trail that's bs!
  • 3 1
yeah, i can ride at almost 80km/h with my own bike. On a road... Smile
  • 1 4
 More bs!!
  • 3 1
haha. don't believe me? find out your self. @jeff444 your an idiot, stop trying to argue when you have no idea about anything. are you new to the bike scene?
  • 1 4
Nope but your guessing speeds I have a cyclometer to measure accurate and I KNOW you are not hitting 66 on a trail! Maybe on a mountain but not a trail you are either dumb or dumb
  • 4 1
haha not at all, i guess you were not at sunpeaks, they announced that Mark hit 91km on the speed trap. bahahaha. Stop trying to argue, you obviously are really slow, and new to the sport. If you were smart you can look up at the results(near the top of the screen) and it says that stevie's speed is 66km, watch a helmet cam of the course or something. I can;t believe how much of a retard you are.
  • 1 4
Your offensive, rude, insensitive to mentally challenged people! Read the comments again nobody said he did not 91?
@ryanxj2 said he hits 66 on a trail bike on his trails that's what I said was bs! And @aksel31 says he does 80 on his road bike more bs. You should read before u make a ass of yourself and show how childish ur!
  • 2 0
bullshit?? I hit 55 km/h on a red track in Les gets Bike park, and you're saying riding nearly 80km/h on a road is impossible?? Please if you're too young, come back playing with your GI Joes, and if you are old enough, go home, you're probably drunk...
  • 1 2
Who said impossible? Just not likely! And 55 is far from 80! That's simple math like grade 1 or 2!
  • 3 0
Oh yeah, but if you can imagine riding a track devastating by riders hit at 55km/h, you can easily imagine a guy riding at ALMOST 80km/h.. depends on the decline, and for your knowledge i wasn't even on a road bike...
  • 3 1
jeff444, you just said nobody said, that nobody said, that he didn't hit 91k, if I recall, you said that mark hitting 91km is bs.
  • 1 4
Go back to insulting mentally challenged people or u could just grow up? Not commenting anymore on such nonsense
  • 3 0
when did I insult a mentally challenged person...? I'm done commenting as well. And you didn't answer my question at all? your comment makes no sense.
  • 3 0
lol at the people who think the speeds are lies , I have clipped 35 MPH ( 56 kph ) , with a speedo ( not the swimming briefs ) on a track that has only a 300 meter straight , now imagine a WC rider with testes twice the size of mine and a bag of skills that I could not even lift with straights several hundreds of meters long.

Don't confuse your own abilities with those of others...
  • 2 0
totally agree, the point of view is important, go to see a world cup and you will see how ridiculous you are compared to the best riders of the circuit(even the 80th rider will blow your mind on how fast he is riding). In Andorra they were shredding on sections that were nearly impossible to walk on, even with a dry soil...
  • 1 2
Only thing ridicules Is all your bullshit statements!
  • 2 1
No, the only ridicule thing is the size of your brain and the amount of shit you can say per hour...
