Qualifying Results: Val di Sole World Cup 2013

Jun 14, 2013 at 4:19
by Karl Burkat
It's a fairly nice and sunny day here in Val Di Sole, there is some chatter that rain might come later, but as of right now it's staying dry. Let's hope it stays that way through qualifying. The junior men have come down for the seeding run with British Junior Phil Atwill leading the pace. The women have just finished, can Rachel and Gee be stopped this year?

two weeks ago everyone wanted a demo 8, now they're crap. if Gwin wins on Sunday you'll all want one again, fickle bunch!
  • + 66
fuck the herd.. keep calm.. and just laugh at them,.
  • + 30
"Gwin moved to Specialized so i did too" ... well i guess some havent seen the sarcasm in there
  • + 115
gwin moved to Large, so i did, too
selling: medium frame^^
  • + 13
made my day.. i'll stay with medium :-D
  • + 70
the athertons are stronger this year, and they have a better bike. cant believe some of the weird and presumptious statements about gwin last week, this result proves 90% of what was posted in negativity about him last week was a pile of dung. its really sad how retarted pinkbikers make themselves look at times.
  • + 64
The falcon training obviously worked for Gee - time for the rest of the field to get on-board with that program!
  • + 15
It's like watching the stock market fluctuate! Did I mention I have a Demo for sale? Razz
  • + 15
I feel bad for Gwinn, everyone has bad days.. or weekends. But come on Gee!!
  • + 8
As it's been said many times before, people have off days. I personally find it madly funny that there is a massive amount of arm/Computer chair World expert/elite riders who know better than anyone. comments on bike changes making the difference for a poor result on one race weekend aren't justified in anyway. this would only be justified if he'd have changed to a 12inch toddler fully ridgid fisher price bike. Even then he'd more than likely beat 90% of us on here down the track with double the style.

I think the season will be a very close one as the top 6 riders were within 2-3 seconds at Fort Bill and just look at the quai' results on this- The top ten are within 7 seconds and the top five finishers from the last race are all within that margin.

I think the final top five for the season are in the order that shown on the quali' results here now.
  • + 9
Man, Gwin and Atherton are on par compared to last season where Gwin had 7 seconds on the field... bit early to tell but holy crap did Gee put in work for this season.
  • + 6
Yeah Gee is killing it. This is some good racing. Im also watching Hill closely, he's doing really well.
  • + 6
Hope Sam stays up there when it comes to race day
  • + 3
Anyone know if CG is sittin out this round? Maybe I'm missing his name.
  • + 2
gee is gonna take it all this year if everything goes right.... also STIEVEEE!!!!
  • + 7
Whatever happens my demo will remain loved and cherished!!!! Smile
  • + 18
This has nothin' to do with bikes. This has to do with riders, and with Gwin raising the bar last year. All of these guys have been training hard because they know Gwin is mortal and can be beat. This is premium racing.
  • + 4
Demo = Good enough for Hill to win World champs on certainly good enough for me
  • + 7
Watch out for Brook, that guy rides with so much power and finesse he's so fun to watch ride and im calling that with a little more "atherton style" training under his belt, he would blow the competition away. Hes just got that raw talent that just can be taught.
  • + 2
So true, it makes me pee!
  • + 1
still not 1st though is he. Big Grin
  • + 1
Brook with effort next season maybe - he's behind the cue ball for this year. Gee to smash it all summer long I hope.
  • + 2
roast-dinner-pinner, to be honest I didn't read your comment, I just saw your user name and thought I'd better say that is the best username I've ever seen on here! I wish I had been more ingenuitive with my username! Frown
  • + 3
Brook macdonald is already the hardest pedaller this season look at the time he made in the last section at fort william. He could be world champ at petermeretsberg
  • + 1
 He's a fast dude
  • + 1
Watching Brook blister our local track back in April was a sight to behold. He has the potential to do what Kovarik was going to do before all of his injuries - I hope he keeps it intact so we can find out!
  • + 1
 what happend to steve? D:
  • + 1
nevemind didnt see his name hahaha
  • + 59
 1. Looks like Gwin may be getting up to speed! 2. go Steve Smith! feels like we've been watching him climb the ranks since his segment in Seasons. 3. Is there a harder worker and more focused racer than Gee? No surprise he's always on or near the top. Racing has been mighty entertaining so far this season!
  • + 14
Finely a comment about the results, not a bike. Well said. I'm very excited as well!
  • + 9
Agreed. If you look at the splits, this is anyone's race. Gwin and Hill each lost a few secs in the 3rd section, but Smith was able to gain substantially in the same section, as was Gee. No rider dominated all 3 sections. Finals are going to be interesting!!
  • + 5
Looks like this WC season is going to be a duke-out! With (at least) 5 serious contenders, no less. When was the last time that happened?
  • + 4
I think AT LEAST is the key to that sentence Piks. Cause if you are talking about the top five in qualies today I would say that you also would have to add Minnaar and Hart, which makes 7 that could all fight it out. I am so excited for this season!
  • + 1
6 rounds this year is it? You have to hit the qualies and the finals consistently to win the champs - one round down anyone not in the top three has got to feel its going to be hard.
  • + 2
I for one would like a season where no rider wins more than 1 World Cup. I think that makes for the most exciting race day. Definitely agree with ya Piks always happy to see Gee at the top but it won't be an easy task to take the win from ANY of those top 10 riders.
  • + 41
 Go on Atwill!!!!
  • + 11
Great to see Rach and Manon up the top again too
  • + 7
 static.sportresult.com/federations/uci/CM/index.html - Actual timing link.
Gwin goes fastest at split 1 and 2 and still ends up 2nd.
  • + 4
@AdamChed: He must have just cruised to the finish line when he came out of the woods.
  • + 1
Gee 44.5mph at split 2 gwin 42.2 Hannah 46.2 mph!!!
  • + 1
Looks like they also rank you according to your top speed. They must have a speed trap somewhere and Gwin only placed 18th on that.
  • + 31
 KPH.....
  • + 1
Yeah - he is fit and hammers the wide open sections. Not even the bike would really hold him back on that kind of open section. He either had a problem or just sat down for the last section. No way he gets 18th after 1st in the first 2 splits all else being equal. Gonna be interesting!!!
  • + 0
Oh - I guess 18th was the speed trap. In any case, my point is, I doubt he lost almost 2 full seconds on the very last part of the course if he were going full bore.
  • + 4
kochjg - you see that thing above called timing? It is correct, he lost the time in the last section.
  • + 3
No I understand - I'm just hypothesizing that *if* he were going full bore, it seems very unlikely that he would have lost a full 2 seconds on that the last section of the course - which is wideopen. It seems like an odd place to lose 2 seconds. Granted, it's just hypothesizing. Gee could also have gone faster, so only tomorrow will tell. It does have me all a'flutter though Wink
  • + 1
I doubt he would have cruised the last part of the track, after his result at Fort William he'll be looking for all the points he can get to get back on track for the overall.
  • + 1
Kilometers per hour 46mph would be insane!!
  • + 2
May be true Dingus, but historically Gwin ALWAYS holds a little something back in both quali's and timed training. Many of the races he has won in the past had me a bit nervous with his qualifier (words cannot explain my disappointment last week at Ft. Bill) but he has ALWAYS improved on his quali time (barring crashes/bobbles). Not to say that everyone else won't pick up some time too, but Gwin seems to pick up more.
  • + 25
wish UCI's page had a live scoring feed from the event. Well, their page or any page.....hint hint
  • + 2
sorry buddy. just not seeing it. it should be like a ticker scoreboard used in many sports and has "live" times coming in, including the qualifiers. if the UCI page has one, it's hard to find...
  • + 1
found what you talking about on the site. bit 1980's!
;-)
  • + 3
Yeah, it's not perfect but definitely better than nothing!
  • + 1
Speaking of scoring... Someone care to explain Qualifiers? You get ranked on your overall time and top speed through a speed trap? Does this decide the order for time trials, or what does it mean?
  • + 1
It's like qualifying for pole in F1. So on the race day people go for their race run in order of slowest qualifying time to the fastest. And then there are the protected riders who if have a bad qualifying run start just outside the top 20
  • + 3
@ BMAR ETC - THE SPEEDTRAP AND THE NUMBER NEXT TO IT IS JUST WHERE YOU RANKED IN HOW QUICK YOU CAME THROUGH THE TRAP - Mick is fastest through the trap (1), Gee is second through the trap (2) and yes this does mean that Gwinn was 18th fastest through the trap (1Cool . I hope this helps. sorry for CAPS but I was not retyping

Ranking is indicated in brackets next to the time on the far right - Gee is 1st (1) and so on and so forth, struggling with this you can just follow the page down and count - there is also the conveniently placed seed number down the far left of the page.

Anything without a "Q" next to it means they did not get top 80 so are out of the main on Sunday.

You can be out of the top 80 in quali IF YOU are a protected top 20 rider in UCI rankings. Use Cam as your marker and example.

 C'mon Gwinny!

  • + 6
srsly. its going to be one of the best seasons to date.

  • + 4
1 sec difference.....what about the other bikes? More terrible tham demo?
  • + 5
Gwin will probably ride a specialized enduro 29er at WC in SA like he did at sea otter.
  • + 10
Sam made the demo work just fine on flats @ RSA if I remember. FFS there is nothing wrong with the Demo !

not rally counting Gwin yet as its too early to tell, but he does seem slightly off his pace and focus, and after all pre season he still making changes and looking for something with bike setup. But none of the big names have done real well on Spec. Look at Hill, he had some decent days here and there, but never looked like himself and never was able to build momentum through a season. Now that hes on a different bike hes got his form back and looks to be a serious contender.

If it is a bike related issue and not something else with their team program and I had to guess at what the "problem" is, Id say its that heavy rear end. There's a thing called un-sprung weight and the Demo has an ass load of it!
Neg prop me all you want.
  • + 14
^ disagree. i think Hill had more than decent days on demos. 1st overall in '09 wcup with a couple of wins and worlds stripes in '10. If you include IronHorse wins and a great upcoming season i think he'd quali as a serious contender, barring injuries, every time...regardless of bike and team.
  • - 1
 Old demo?

Sams results on spec from last year...

7th Place: Val Di Sole, Italy UCI World Cup DH
4th Place: Ft William, Scotland UCI World Cup DH

good analysis bro
  • + 8
i do think hill's final run @ VDS in '08 is his best even though he fell and got 3rd. It was scary rapid. right up there with champery! so Hill for some redemption on sunday!

haha. i know. i hear it from the groms when my kiddo and I are at a bmx track. it's all good cuz I'm still "stoked" on riding. can recognize when something is "sick" even if i can't "shred" every day!
  • + 11
Rach sets the benchmark with a 3.51 BOOM!

manon is 3rd but nearly 10 secs back FFS. Ragot is 7 secs back - 1 word. Atherton !

surprised @ Hannah's pace.
  • + 1
why are you surprised about Tracey's pace?
  • + 1
she is sick literally aswell as mick
  • + 5
@jasez because I expected her to be closer to the top first and foremost - and secondary because 20 seconds back is a lot for a girl of her calibre - then again it just shows how on it Rachel is ;-)
  • + 7
She broke her collarbone in early May just after Sea Otter.... being able to ride gnarly tracks like this so soon after an injury is pretty amazing.
  • + 1
I think Tracey is more of the pedally track girl (witness her win in SA last season) rather than the gnar - Rach is an all track rider - she kills everything and seems to be weeing on Ragot at this point. I hope she is doing this all within her talents and avoids injury.
  • + 14
 Nice one Jack Reading!
  • + 1
Got him on my fantasy team! Braap!
  • + 1
crazy how he sometimes manages to get right up there, but he's so inconsistent. Not wishing him badly, but he'll probably crash in his finals run as per usual.
  • + 13
C'mon Sam Hill Smile Smile Smile
  • + 2
He looked more on-form last week than he has in a looooooong time, although he was on pace at Val d'Isere last year until he had a bobble before a slight uphill. I won't be shocked if he's top-box come Sunday.
  • + 9
Jack Reading 14th has got to be the best result of the day, considering the guy didn't have a ride at the start of the year. Lets hope he can keep it together in race run!
  • + 0
he's loaded and has 5 or 6 bikes that he's paid for with his own cash, he still doesn't have a main sponsor as far as I'm aware and doesn't get a free bike, dropped ellsworth because they were crap, probably a good idea tbh...
  • + 12
 Go on Rach!! Smashed it
  • + 10
Very nice to see brazilian rider Luana in 16 in such a hard track like that. Força ai Luana quem sabe um podium!!!
  • + 1
Bernardo Cruz 28 segundos atras do Gee tambem, quero ver ele melhorar agora que ta na Redbull!
  • + 6
Just a thought; in the top 12 qualifiers there's 11 different bike brands. That's a great sign for us as bike riders, knowing that there's so many good bikes out there to choose from; whether your bike looks like a session or not, chances are it's going to ride well!
  • + 7
This post restored my faith in mankind. Every race, we hear from internet engineers who assess just how handicapped each rider is. It is a nice change of pace to see some sound thinking--it is, and has always been, about the rider. Gee wasn't held back from wins because of the bike last year, Sam Hill is not back because of Nukeproof, and Gwin is not a has-been because of Specialized. These guys are just fast, and the margin of error is incredibly narrow. Wiffle gets it...let's hope the rest of us figure it out.
  • + 10
 YEEAAAAA LUCAAA holdin it down!
  • + 9
I hope that Gee smashes this season, he deserves it 200%! Smile
  • + 6
Woo hoo! All the Carbon Demo 8s I bought last Sunday afternoon are worth a fortune again Big Grin The questions is whether to sell them today or gamble on their value going up even more Sunday morning...
  • + 1
Sorry meant to up prop you.
  • + 4
All this makes Sunday so much more inviting ! If it rains that place will be a nightmare to deal with, even in the dry there is 5 seconds to be lost by hitting one wrong line so while the quali is important it is not a clear indicator of where we will end up on Sunday. Cannot-wait.com
  • + 5
Past few years when everyone cheered for Sam Hill I never thought he really had his game for it anymore but I think its awesome he is doing well again and it would be real sick to see a win or even a top 3
  • + 7
12 Brits in the top 30 WTF !

Someone has to stick it to that snatch, though I prefer it be Ragot. She needs payback for last years course cutting, she knew she was in the wrong. If Atherton would've been dq'd she never would have taken the overall from Ragot. I'm still bitter about that!!!
  • + 6
Clearly ! let it go Matt it's eating you up inside man, if you don't you will end up bitter, twisted and alone.
  • + 2
Better rider wins - if Ragot hadn't buried her saddle in her beaver off the last jump she'd have won in Windham and the judges looked at Rachel's course cut before settling it. As jmb says - let it go man, let it go.
  • + 3
she accidentally cut the course, lost a LOT of time and still won the race, i think mattsavage has no idea what he's talking about.
  • + 2
According to Vital MTB, Gwin's gone to a large from a medium.

From www.vitalmtb.com/photos/features/Pit-Bits-2013-Val-di-Sole-World-Cup,5643/Aaron-Gwin-Switches-to-Large-Specialized-Demo-8-at-Val-di-Sole,57346/sspomer,2?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=spotlight

"After a last minute decision, Aaron Gwin is switching from a medium to a large Specialized Demo 8 frame just prior to qualifiers. He's searching for more comfort and more room to move around."

Does that not sound like what Gee and Rachel have both recently said as well as what Mark Weir seemed to be intimating before? ---> www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=KJrL6kEOhWQ

And based on quali results, that may have made a big difference.
  • + 1
Holy goose!!! After watching this vid..and seeing The Atherton results on this bike..makes me want one!!
  • + 2
Yeah, I think it's finally time for me to get a different frame.
  • + 1
It's funny to see that my comment is getting neg-propped. It's not as though I lied or anything. Nor do I show favoritism to any rider in particular.

What is common in racing of all types is for riders / drivers to go to what works! Gwin is a smart lad and is no doubt paying attention to what others are doing. He is, without a doubt going to be more then willing to try things that help him go faster. This isn't any different the Formula 1, MotoGP, or WSB, or V8 Supercars.
  • + 2
I think everyone thinks you mean you are going to buy GT because the Athertons are doing well on them! Apparently you aren't allowed to buy a DH frame based on others success you just have to guess which is good.
  • + 2
 Hmmm.....

Or perhaps it has something to do with the fact that the route GT has taken was taken already by Mondraker. I would buy a Foxy and Summum both if you could easily get them here in the states.

So, over a year ago I bought a large frame Khyber Elite for my AM rig. The BB is a full 2 inches lower then my DH bike, the wheel base an inch longer, and the EFT is 2 inches longer. Slap a 30mm stem on it and my 5'9" in frame feels very good with it. It's frackin' perfect. Now just to get a DH rig built with the same idea.

Enter GT with the new Fury!

But of course, I just want to be like Gee.
  • + 2
i've ridden a foxy XR they are very very good bike, the frames are cheap too by UK standards.
  • + 1
I'm sure this has been asked and answered many times - but can someone tell me exactly how the splits work? That is, if a rider is say 5th at split one and 2nd at split two, does that mean he was the 5th fastest rider overall between the start and split one, and the 2nd fastest rider overall at split two? That is, would he have come in 2nd if the finish line were split 2? Or does it just mean that his time was the second fasted between split 1 and split 2, but he is not necessarily the 2nd fasted rider overall if the finish line were split 2? Follow me? If I felt like doing the math I'd have already done it - someone just tell me the answer Smile
  • + 1
i think its cumulative, i.e. from start to split one and from start to split 2 etc.
  • + 3
C'mon Brook Mc' Bulldog!!! You know your on a better bike, focus & remain calm.. Do your thing a SMASH this course!!! ***GO BROOK MCDONALD***
  • + 1
I think this shows the strengths of the Demo. As the review in Dirt this month stated; the Demo is a full on downhill frame, it doesn't pedal well compared with the other top race frame (hence the result in FW), but on tracks like this it should shine.
I want so badly for Brendawg to get it together, but yet again it looks unlikely.
  • + 0
Maybe true, but it's fact that if Gwin still knows how to ride a bike, he's lost more than eight seconds of dominance on a track he used to own. (if compared to both quali and race run in 2012).

We'll see what Sunday brings - really excited!
  • + 1
Apparently the track isn't as wide as last years was, but regardless it's still qually they'll go faster tomorrow
  • + 1
THIS IS NOT JUST QUALI RESULT... It's a glimpse of things to come on race day. The top 5 (or top 7) is very tight indeed. Gwin coming in 2nd means a lot. He a has a big chance of winning it (unlike Fort Bill). I'm rooting for a redemption win for Sam Hill but getting past Brook and Stevie is a tall order. And if he gets past them, there's Gee's and Aaron's time.. This will surely tell us what Sam can be capabale of. Hope he stays on the bike Smile ITS GO TIME!
  • + 6
 where's CG ?
  • + 1
can't find him on the standings, anyone found him?
  • + 3
He's sitting this one out. Rumor is he's prepping for an enduro. Also, this is the track that he almost died on last year, so I could understand if he didn't want to come back at this point of his career.
  • + 4
Good to see Gwin back and Sam hill in 5th. Gutted that Mitch Ropelato didn't make it though. Frown
  • + 1
Likewise for Mitch Delfs (???) and Bryn Atkinson (DNS).
  • + 1
Its only Qualis, but WTH is up with Brendon Fairclough if ever theyre was a track he was going to shine incl his Scott this was it, its not the bike in his case or setup hes had great support, I can only think his training and lack of pedalling which these days is a must regardless of course, is he just going to be another rider full of insane talent wasted. As for Gwin, said it was the bike as many others, we never said it was a bad bike, setup size is critical and different brands are different, lets see if hes back in it to win it come race day, as long as you have the numbers, geo, suspenion, tires right on a course like this the name on the downtube is not an issue, noone argues with Gwins skills he is ex moto! Sydicate off the pace this year too, least GM has made the top 10 he will pick it up though you can always rely ln him, hes the consumate professional!
  • + 1
i said "tomorrow there will be a lot of demo's dirt cheap for sale" last week, but this week gwin will bring the demo up again
maybe we was just experimenting the bike at fortwilliam?
  • + 2
it would be sick if gwin took the win by an awful lot of secs
  • + 1
He switched from at medium to a large frame. Makes sense for this track...not sure if it would have been so at Ft. Bill.
  • + 4
That's more like it. Gwin haters gonna hate!

  • + 2
Gee is and has been the best over all dh racer for the past 5 years. His results are staggering....So incredibly consistent and top notch. It really does not get any better.
  • + 0
How do they determine start order for the Qualifiers? I'm seeing all the big guns (Gee, Hill, Gwin, Hart, Minnar, Smith etc) all down already yet there are still riders to go? I always assumed they went in reverse order of ranking or something.
  • + 2
Okay - this may be a stupid question - but how can Gwin be first on split one and two - and come in second? Is there a third leg of the race I'm not seeing?
  • + 7
yes third split is the finish line so he was slower from split 2 to the line
  • + 6
 Derp. Thanks.
  • + 5
 Gwin wake up?
  • + 4
So! Is everyone keeping there Demo 8's now?
  • + 7
They sold their demo 8"s already. Now they r dying to have them back!!! lol
  • + 7
No, they're going to trade it in for the next size up. Wink
  • + 3
Go Jill! Top USA woman. Break that top five.
  • + 1
So Kyle sangers, Mitch delfs and Mitch ropelato all didn't qualify for finals. Cam cole was also low in the order but must be protected so will be in finals.
  • + 1
Does anybody know what the (P) protected means in the key? there are a couple of riders with it next to their names. first time i have ever noticed
  • + 1
Protected riders are automatically in the final regardless of how they do in qualifying. Its to protect the top riders from missing out on a final due to a mechanical problem or a crash or something. If a protected rider fails to qualify based on time they are in the final but start at the bottom.
  • + 1
thought I was excited last week!! gwin and atherton up top!!! only thing thats gonna make it better is if the rest are up there!! and i hope brendog gets up there!!

I believe there's practice tomorrow. They just did quali's today since there's an XC race tomorrow. Don't want to spread the fans too thin, I suppose?
  • + 1
 Can someone explain why Split1+Split2≠Time

For example, Gee time, 59.159+2:21.155≠3:15

And, Gwin did faster Split 1 and Split 2 but he was second. I don't get it.
  • + 2
A split is your time at a certain section of the track. It just gives a time that the person reached a point of the track, the split time doesn't matter or count towards anything, only your final time counts. So if first and second split was the fastest, but then finished 2nd, that just means that the rider was slower on the last section.
  • + 1
Oh, i get it, its not the time he spent on doing a portion of the track, it is the time that clock indicates when he reach a point on the track. Thanks!
  • + 1
 exactly.
  • + 1
Are any of these races shown on TV? I was sitting around last nigh drinkin a pacifico, and wanted to watch some bike racing. Where can I find such beauty on TV?

Does anyone know of a streaming site for the 2013 DH season? Free or pay? I would like to watch the races however, I have not come across any streams.
  • + 2
 Redbull.com has all the races.

www.redbull.com/us/en/bike/stories/1331596433183/watch-live-uci-dh-world-cup-from-val-di-sole

They usually have a link here on pinkbike to the broadcast as well.

 THANK YOU!!!! You rock!!!
  • + 2
Pardon my dumbness. But what time is 16.15 CET? What's that stand for, Central European Time? And how does that relate to GMT?
  • + 1
CET is an hour ahead of GMT.
  • + 1
CET is 2 hours ahead of GMT in summer. And yes, Central European Time.
  • + 0
 Thanks people.

So its 7:15 AM in Pacific Standard time, USA.

Just looked at a map - its interesting how everything from Galicia in Spain to Bulgaria in the east is one time zone.
  • + 2
We try and operate Europe on one time zone to aid businesses and so on - a concept alien to america where the west likes to pretend the east is a different country.
  • + 1
That's working out well for Spain and Italy. WA likes to pretend that California is another country.
  • + 3
GT team the leader .... so cool .
