Also an update from the Monster-Specialized squad heading into round 1 of the World Cup.

The rain and hail that have besieged Pietermaritzburg the last week has been replaced with blue skies and hot African sunshine as South Africa gets ready to kick off the 2011 World Cup season. At the Monster Energy - Specialized compound, the bikes are built and the team is ready to take on the extremely pedally track through the Ecalyptus. Look for Sam Hill and Troy Brosnan in their rainbow stripes and for Brendan Fairclough getting sideways on the multiple jumps that litter the track here in SA.

After a day spent shooting photos, hunting down cans of Monster Energy and doing downhill runs on local tracks, the boys are all ready to get the season underway.

Defending World ChampionTroy Brosnan talked about his first trip to South Africa: "South Africa is a pretty wild place. There's monkeys running around everywhere and tons of Ecalyptus forest. Seen lots of cars with 40 people in them. It's a pretty different experience, one to remember. I'm really looking forward to the race this weekend. I'm looking forward to losing a lung or two."

Team Mechanic Jacy Shumilak was too busy building fresh bikes by the pool to talk, but did have this to add: "We're here, you're not. I wish I had a Burrito."

We’d like to thank the following companies for their continued support: Monster Energy, Specialized Bicycles, Mad Catz, SRAM, Truvativ, Rock Shox, Avid, DT Swiss, SDG, Renthal, Troy Lee Designs, Maxima, Cane Creek, e-thirteen, Five Ten, Alligator, Obtainium, Freestyle, Kicker, KMC.

If you weren't into the sport and met these guys in the woods, you'd think the aliens have landed...

seriously. take me to your leader! Can you imagine wearing that into the grocery store?

humm, so rock shox have dropped the proto DLC? interesting.

why are their kits always so bland...
  • 3 2
Everyone says that they think the kit is gay, lame, they look like clowns blah blah blah. I bet in 6 months time when you go to a race there will be a shitload of people rocking round in these, and most of them will probably the ones that wrote about how shit they looked on here......just saying.

decent looking guy i've seen is gee atherton coz he's not wearing pajamas and he wears knee pads too. comes to show he's still human after all.

how are there that many views.

Ae Forest sda rnd 1 had a guy racing in pj bottoms. Looked weird/funny!
Don't think they would do much in the way of protecting skin in a crash though!!!
  • 2 0
That would be me, much cheaper than your average troy lee pyjama bottoms!
  • 2 0
You've got some fancy pyjamas....I like the look of these. I don't understand why people complain about how flashy DH is getting. People want to be noticed, so they wear clothing accordingly. If you wanna rock the T and jeans no ones stopping you.

im liking those lenses though they look so sick!

why are they all riding boxxers. i thought it was a 40 team

And I used to laugh at roadies and XC guys for having lame, matchy-matchy kits with flashy eyewear... At least it's not Lycra, I guess... :-|
  • 3 2
they banned skin suits in UCI-sanctioned DH races. not that skin suits are made of lycra but the idea behind wearing a lycra and a skin suit is a bit the same: improve aero dynamics.
  • 6 0
Nothing wrong with skinsuits or lycra if they help shave off split seconds, but I agree with ScandiumRider as for the pyjamas-looks. Actually, most xc kits nowadays are more toned down and better looking than some of the DH ones Wink
  • 4 1
I'm pretty sure DH banned skin suits because they offer no protection and promote the DH world to go get hurt more. Its the kind of competition that DH doesn't want. People would do anything to get seconds off, so the safety of the riders became a priority. But its sick that they banned them so there are no more spandex-ed people. Makes the sport seem much more rugged.
  • 2 0
VTwintips, you're actually correct. they banned it coz it wasn't safe for riders. riders used it for aerodynamics though. sorry for my previous post.
  • 4 0
VTwintips, that was the official argument stated by the UCI. Completely invalid, as riders used to wear protection gear under skinsuits. Some really serious wipeouts happened to riders who chose to wear them, like Hill, and somehow there was no obvious correspondence between injuries and outfits. Your last sentence about "seeming more rugged" pretty much sums up the actual reasons. The UCI wanted to enhance the "coolness factor" of the sport, but apparently they have only turned racetracks into catwalks. Maybe riders should start making motorbike noises with their mouths while racing, if DH is supposed to be so bad-ass-almost-like-motocross nowadays Wink

I think getting rid of the skinsuits was the right decision. Skinsuits are effective at improving aerodynamics, but look stupid. If we want our sport to go mainstream we need to keep it cool.

I agree that mountain biking needs to find it's own image, not copy what motocrossers look like. Does anyone wear pajama pants when there just out riding for fun in the woods? I don't see that in my area at all. Everyone I know either wears jeans and a t-shirt, or a subtle DH Bike Jersey with freeride mountain bike specific bike shorts.
  • 1 0
totally agree with tetonlarry. wearing pajamas looks and feels weird. i've never seen anyone wear those in our local trails and in the bike parks. mtb bike shorts all the way!

i ride road bikes too (just did a short lap a while ago. i'll be switching back to mountain bikes once all the snow melts) but i wear my mtb bike shorts instead of lycra, LOL!

skin suits were just stupid, the riders wore them for one race a year so it doesnt really change much that their banned anyways
  • 2 0
If skin suits were unsafe then why did they also ban running helmets 'cannonball' (i.e. no visor)?

I'll tell you why - because the industry wanted the motocross look because that's what sells.

Clothing that is noisier and flaps around is slower. Period. AFAIK, there is only one other sport that puts the 'looks' of the athletes clothing over peformance in its rules - beach volleyball (limits on bikini size etc.).

There's an old saying: if it looks stupid, and it works, it's not stupid.
  • 1 0
the banning of them changed nothing though except for ONE race out of the whole year so who cares??
  • 13 0
 butt fugly outfits, really

ABSTRACT: In this study we will determine just how much impressionable buyers are influenced by their favourite professional athletes by outfitting one of the top downhill mountain bike teams in clothing found to cause dizzyness, nausea and vomitting.

Pyjamas?? Seriously.. who the f*$k goes out and buys things to wear to bed that look like that? I thought pyjamas were plaid and worn by your Grand father..... Kooks!! Just like every year there will be a contraversial kits that come out from various brands..... and they end being the most popular design in a few months!

Did anybody else think he sounds like sam?
  • 1 0
I think it would be nicer if they had darker contrasting pants instead of a continuation of the same pattern. They Look like Onesy PJ's. I do like the colors and graphic, but just for the jersey. Sick Lenses!!
  • 3 0
Best of luck to Troy in the upcoming season!
  • 1 0
does anyone else think that in the picture of the three of them together, the boxxers look a bit beefier than standard? might just be me . . .
  • 1 0
They don't have the "BOX" on the stanchions any more? I agree, they do look a little beefier so that is my reasoning? Who knows. Razz
  • 1 0
the letters on the stanchions are still there...there just only on the right side...i do agree that they look beefed up though...must be the keronite...haha
