First Look: New Sony Action Cam to Shoot 4K

Jan 5, 2015 at 17:51
by Karl Burkat

Sony FDR-X1000V

Sony has unveiled a new Action Cam to bring its feature set a little closer to industry leader GoPro. The FDR-X1000V will have 4K at 30fps and come in at a cost of $499, which matches the cost of the new GoPro Hero 4 Black. Sony is claiming better image stabilization, decreased wind noise and a wider field of view. All those features are yet to be determined until we're able to get it tested in the field. Nonetheless, more competition is better, so this addition to the action cam market is a good thing. There will also be a lower priced version (AS200V) that shoots full HD priced at $299. Expect them both to hit the shelves in March, 2015.

$499? What a bargain! Said no one...
  • + 34
what a great deal! its not like most computers cant view 4k videos
  • + 5
Definitely don't get a hero 4 silver it's not like it's better quality and cheaper. No competition now, sony just killed it with this one......
  • + 2
Why would I buy that over the gopro if it were like $200 it would make sense
  • + 34
Guys the point in 4k at the moment for most people is so that you can choose which section of the larger video you want to use, like if you only wanted to use one corner so you can crop out your helmet etc. the other point at the moment is so you can scale it down and make super high quality 1080p HD, i know computers cant handle 4k but there are alot if benefits of filming with it.
  • + 4
Not to mention that 4k is spreading pretty fast. If you bought this your videos would still look modern in 5 years. Have you ever looked at the gopro videos from five years back? They look a grainy compared to the new stuff.
I'd think that if this is a real innovation we will see more videos shot with it soon enough. Video is one thing pros can't skimp on since the sponsors want the best possible footage. That means we'll see as many actioncams as gopros.
  • + 11
4K is spreading fast, if you are a multinational broadcaster or VOD provider... It is totally pointless spending ^^this sort of cash on a 4K consumer camera unless you have access to a high-end post production kit, workflow, and 4K projection capability. The amount of time & ball-ache it takes to process workable low-res proxies with which to edit, then relink to MASSIVE native media files in order to scale & zoom... unless you are a professional, you honestly might as well shoot with care in 1920x1080 and save yourself a gigantic PITA.
Also, I personally think shooting in 4K can take away a lot of the joy of good filming. If you are just thinking 'oh it'll be fine, we'll just crop the shit out of it and it will look awesome' then why bother setting up & framing any of your shots properly?
  • + 48
My New Year's Resolution is 640x480.
  • + 1
 actual 4k or just uhd?
  • + 0
The only think that makes me goes with GoPro is the form factor.
Sony AC and many others cams with "inline" form factor are just too protruding for action sports filming, except when helmet mounted.
Sony need to step out from their usual cam design and rethink it with purpose and use in mind instead of just tech specification.
  • + 3
It is better when mounted on the side of a helmet or rear facing on the frame: less impacts.
That said, I was just looking at the newest gopro and thinking how ugly they are. I know they are top knotch, but I look forward to the day we can look back and think of these things the same way as we think of the eighties.
  • + 1
I agree with you Gnarlized but the drama is, sony and the rest don't want to make it look like a GoPro. Granted, GoPro really git the nail on the head with the cube styled design and well, that's why they've sold so well. They are versatile and can be used in my different configurations,
  • + 1
@Franziskaner I don't think most people are very worried about framing and composition on their helmet cam shots though
  • + 1
The remote viewing wrist unit is awesome and the image stabilization makes a huge difference. Easy interface too. I dont like how far it sticks off the chest mount tho... I own every POV cam out there and I like the sony best so far.
  • - 2
Seriously guys, let Gopro handle the action sports camera industry, these are just copies of a Gopro. Plus when you buy a Gopro, you have Te option of many versatile mounts, with one of these cameras, it's very limited.
  • + 6
If you get rid of the competition gopro will stop making new stuff and prices will climb. So no, don't just leave it to one company, ever.
  • + 1
That's true, but it's stupid how all these action sports cameras are trying to be like the next greatest thing, but the cameras don't have the same or similar features to a gopro, but are priced the same as a gopro.
  • + 2
What ever let them all do there thing, il stick with gopro until something significantly cheaper and equal quality comes out
  • + 31
"Set a little closer to industrie leader GoPro"... But if it costs the same as gopro and can't do as many things, why the same price as a top of the line gopro?
  • + 7
I was thinking the same thing. Seems like a poor pricing choice by Sony.
  • + 54
 GoPro or go home!
  • + 19
Hey! Lets build an Alright camera, and charge the same as a Great camera.

better than Contour... JUST KIDDING! you can only get it in one color. Contour is still the industry leader!
  • + 18
Try Auto Stabilization, Low Light Sensor and GPS tracking to name a few plus better battery life than the comp.
  • + 6
you sir, need to go back to your cave you've been living in for the past five years
  • + 6
GoPro is still the only competitive brand to provide a practical chesty mount... Just saying.
  • + 9
For a little extra cash you can get the Xperia Z3 which also shoots in 4K, has share play with ps4, and is waterproof to 5ft. Oh and you can make phone calls on it.
  • + 9
So what can't it do that a gopro can? Don't take it the wrong way but the only reason a lot of people like gopro is because they are so popular. A piece of that is because that are really nice cameras. I did my research and bought a action cam instead of a gopro because to me it was easier to use. A lot of people may like the gopro for what it is. I just want to know what the action cam cant do that the gopro can.
  • + 5
@morrisgabriel The GoPro can do 120fps at 1080p and a 30fps 12mp burst. Plus it has way more mounts and third party products than the action cam.
  • + 0
True which gopro are you comparing it to?
@650boss
  • + 7
I bought the first sony. It does everything the go pro can. Except still shots. But hey it's an action cam do I really have time to take a selfie. Go pro makes a sweet camera, but I'm kinda tired of people not researching all options before speaking. Other companies make sweet cameras too. I'll give GoPro the mounting options are better, but if other people tried other cameras thief mounts would get better.
  • + 3
 Sony as20 $100. Jus sayin, 1080p 60fps, WiFi, 1\4 slowmo
  • + 15
More POV cams on the market, the better. Otherwise GP will become the Apple of the POVcam world, and I'm sure none of us really want that.
  • + 0
The image quality of the current Action Cam is much worse than the GoPro Hero 3. And that's comparing footage I took with a borrowed GoPro (in dark and dingy UK) vs Pro footage with the Action Cam in sunny, bright countries.
These other companies need to step up and match GoPro if they want to compete or be a lot cheaper. Even the new £100 GoPro Hero produces a better picture than the Contour and Action Cam

Just saying.
  • + 1
@CustardCountry I have to agree. the quality of the action cam leaves much to be desired if you compare it to the go pro. video quality is far more important than pixels and resolution if you ask me. in particular low light video quality. got to hate all that noise.
  • + 2
www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNWKwXnf-Cg the IQ of the new (AS200V)$299 seems pretty damn good!!
  • + 3
Someone needs an Interview over at Sony.
  • + 1
 Do not forget suppository mount.
  • + 0
I agree about the chest mount....it's like growing a tit with the action cam, i think that's why there's a new Shoulder Mount that provides a similar POV. It's like mounting a canon on your shoulder. There's no more toaster head with the Action cam. Lol.
  • + 1
@Esmeltze I like the GoPro mainly because it's not JUST an action camera. It's versatility allows me to take it on MTB rides, but then take it off my helmet and use it just like any other camera. It takes incredible stills, and I totally trust it for capturing vacations, small adventures etc. I took it on a campout at Moab, and was extremely impressed from what I got both on and off the bike.
  • + 17
100mbps will be the real winning factor for the Sony over the Gopro which only does 60mbps, no point in having that 4k resolution if it's a blocky compressed mess. Sony makes the sensors that are used inside the gopros, there's no reason why they don't produce a superior camera already!
  • + 22
I prefer to do all my POV shots on a Blackberry Curve.
  • + 6
 It can even send emails!
  • + 7
 REDPOV just wait
  • + 8
 Starting at $5,999
  • + 4
Is there a card that actually has a write speed of 100mbs? Many claim up to 90 or so....
  • + 1
I could be wrong on this but I think 100 megabits per second is only 12.5 megabytes per second and the fastest Micro SD card has a write speed of 50 megabytes per second.
  • + 1
I think I mixed bits and bytes, my bad.

Strange how Sony supplies the sensors to almost everybody. I think GoPro go the jump on them from the beginning though, and have really mapped this out. Sony probably didn't think it would take off like it did, and they got caught.

But my original point was something to the effect that; what good is 100mbps if a card can't write that fast? Unless cards are writing that fast... but, like all computer stuff, it's only a matter of time, and a little bit of money.
  • + 2
Cards are able to write at way over the necessary speed for 100mbs .
  • + 3
Yep, Ultra SD cards exist that go 100Mbps or more for DSLRs already.
  • + 2
Hey virtumedia u guys need to make another demo reel. Your vids are sick
  • + 1
It's funny that they don't advertise based on it, but the main reason I'd even look at the Sony over the GoPro is the sensor & the Carl Zeiss glass.
  • + 1
If you look at go pro footage from rampage and Sony action cam footage the Sony footage is better by a mile
  • + 1
 LInks?
  • + 14
I'm still sold on the design of the gopro. I like to mount mine to my chest and it seems that the Sony would be awkward to do so?
  • + 3
pretty much. that's why GPs are far more versatile. design wise my 2 cents. this would do great on a helmet tho
  • + 1
It's less that the Sony on your chest is awkward, and more that it just flat out does not work. They have a chesty and it causes the camera to stick so far out there is no way it would ever work. It would need an image stabilizer that could move 6 inches in all directions. Maybe it works for other activities, but bicycles is not one of the.
  • + 1
For helmet mount application i think the sony side mount is a way better option as opposed to putting a giant cube on top. Besides who only has one 500 dollar camera these days, get a GP for your chest as well!
  • + 1
The camera is so close to the side of your helmet that a lot of the helmet and visor are in the shot, with a gopro sticking out further you can prevent that
  • + 16
that will fit perfectly in my chest opening!
  • + 1
you wouldn't see me wearing this with a chesty
  • + 2
 maybe a crotchy?
  • + 12
kim jong un definitely swingin by that sony booth at CES tryna get some 4k action
  • + 7
I got a 5K computer wooohoooo, but I don't own a GoPro or a Sony Action cam. Oh well, its still good for viewing porn. Tits look real.
  • + 1
wtflip man, your supposed to watch pinkbike!
  • + 2
Porn and pinkbike are not mutually exclusive.
  • + 4
As a guy who messes around with GoPro footage a lot, 4K would have its benefits, mainly for stabilization purposes. The image can be very unstable and retain image quality after cropped for stabilization
  • + 4
It's not just MTBers using cameras…

If there's one thing we should all be able to agree on, is that competition from sony and others are improving the cameras to everyones benefit.
  • + 1
GoPro makes for a poor helmet application when it comes to moto or anything higher speed. Sony's side mount would be way better.
  • + 3
In my opinion the main reason to buy a Sony is the image stabilization. I use an older Action Cam and the stabilization works pretty well. If you don't want to spend $500 on a camera you can also think about the AS200V or other older models. I fear there too are many people who buy a GoPro just because of the brand and without doing research for good alternatives.
There isn't just GoPro. There is also Sony, Drift Innovation, Contour, etc.
  • + 2
Gotta agree with you on this one. I've got an older model Sony too and along with a k-edge gopro adapter i think it's as good if not better than the equivalent gopro. Yeah the chest cam thing takes a bit of fiddling, but flip it over and it's fine. Add the image stabilization and it's almost the same as a gopro minus the annoying noise.
I paid £200 for mine, and i can't fault it for what i need it for.

As you say there are plenty of other options out there which is never a bad thing. Competition is healthy
  • + 7
The latest budget GoPro hero for £95 will do me just fine thanks
  • + 6
Oh cool! Now I can record my bad-angled shots in 4K hotness!!!
  • + 1
Any video i have seen i have prefered the sony, better in low light faster response in changing light and just that bit sharper. Also the gp always has a red tint to it. I can understand the chest mount problem but it the same fo gp on the side of something, it also looks like a mini washing machine. Sony are market leaders in so many things why do people assume they cant be in the action cam market? Saying all that i opted for a drift, 1080p and the screen is handy all for £140 but next cam will be sony.
  • + 2
It's only a matter of time before Sony overtakes GoPro. GoPro doesn't actually make camera hardware they just make a little plastic box to house it all. Sony knows how to make cameras...
  • + 1
GoPro color reproduction sucks and rolling jelly can't be removed even in post processing. With wide field of view, downsampling and post processing stabilization makes for a far better image.
  • + 4
Sweet! Now I just have to get better at mountain biking!
  • + 1
the shape of the camera is problematic. It can not mount on your chest. I wish the riders here would stop comparative shopping and view new items for what they are and not some threat to their coveted camera
  • + 1
They had em on sale in Australia for $350 and if you trade in any action cam working or not you get another $100 off. Ended 31st of December.
Kind of kicking my self now but didn't want to spend the $250 then want a go pro.
  • + 4
should $299 like the last model would be a better move.
  • + 4
 Meh.
  • + 0
Price is ridiculous for 4k who really cares its still only a head cam its not gonna make you go faster so whats so special about this just another one of the money grabbing tricks
  • + 2
Thank god financial aid just came through! Just in time to spend it on bike parts instead of books!
  • + 2
 with my tax money...
  • + 1
Sony Action Cam to Shoot 4K,if one camera can shoot 2.7k and very cheap.what do you think?

  • + 2
$500 for either a go pro camera that i know works or a sony that I'm not sold on.

Yeah, good move sony.
  • + 2
you telling me sony released a camera that may not actually record footage?
  • + 2
They should really sort out the condensation issue with the case before investing money in new cameras.
  • + 2
 how bad is it?
  • + 1
 pretty bad TBH
  • + 1
A mini packet of silica gel does the trick. saves forking out for the official rip off moisture pads
  • + 1
pain in the arse to remove though. not a well thought out design. you can get cheaper pads from amazon etc that work but again a pain in the arse to remove
  • + 1
I'll stick with SJCAM SJ4000.. I can buy 4 of these for the price of GP4 or Sony... mount them everywhere.. more coverage... plus cheaper to replace when you crash...
  • + 1
They even make them in suppository mount option.
  • + 2
Are those things any good? A mate was looking at one the other day and I had to laugh at exactly how much it mirrors a gopro. But for £35 it must be worth a laugh.
  • + 2
watch for GP and SJCAM comparison: www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnJVN6gUtfI ... the good thing is you're still gonna be laughing when you crash and break this cam...
  • + 2
I'm happy with my Contour HD, but I wonder if anyone REALLY NEED the 4K video.
  • + 4
Given that 4K tv's have dropped in price 85% in the past 18 months, and that they're now seen as a better choice than 3D TVs, I'd say yes.
  • + 7
Yes, watching my POV runs on computer and sharing them with my best friends on Facebook was never enough, I bring folks home and make them watch my adventures on my new 4k TV! It is almost as exciting as 3 hour marathon of pictures from my wedding in Puerto de Rocas - they are loving it! To a make it more exciting for them I am working hard with editing so I bought a package of 4k cool transitions and 4k Comic Sans font for movie maker lately.
  • + 4
 Do you offer snacks to?
  • + 1
You could even fix up a trainer and get them to "live" the ride in full 3d motion Wink
  • + 4
yes krissbo! And shout advices! Yea you are pinning it Albert! Pull with the bars in 5.4.3.2.1 - oh you missed that, never mind just focus on the uphill coming in 5.4.3 aaah no it is on another segment. Nothing better than stare at Tv and shout advices... then it should be live streaming! You watch your buddy with live streaming 4k camera when he's on a visit to a WorldCup venue. He's riding down and you shout advices that he can hear on his headphones. That would be better than watching football! Pinkbike should totally run such thing - tell Joe how to ride a world cup track LIVE! -Take the line to the left! Watch for a stone to the right, your head angle is not slack enough, so you should take it easier in that rockgaren, hit brakes damn it! that would be Online Expert 2.0
  • + 1
Keep the new stuff coming. I just got a vivtar. It may be crap compared to the high end, but its cheap crap! Technology is one place where trickle down seems to work.
  • + 3
Maybe GoPro 4+ Black will have video stabilization and GPS. Waiting.....
  • + 2
Eventually were gonna be buying cameras more expensive than our bikes.
  • + 2
Sony p1$$ all over Go Pro.
  • + 1
i like the look of the camera
it looks proper nice but it cost $500 for 4k
  • + 2
i want drones that follow me down in the trail.
  • + 2
Damn son where'd ya find this?
  • + 1
the hexoplus drone is amazing but expensive. there's one kickstarter that starts at $400-$600 but i cannot find the link of it.
  • + 1
We all do. It's in the works!
  • + 0
Yeaahh, cameras ( gopro sony whatever) attached to a little drone....folllowing me all the way down...safe for other cyclist...controlled by voice command....I am waiting
  • + 2
GoPro leads and has endless mounting options
  • + 1
too bad its image quality is much worse
  • + 2
I don't see the problem. I've been using my hero 3 black for a year now and that fucker is crystal clear baby
  • + 1
I'm suprised no one mentioned AEE cameras yet
  • + 0
buy the Chi Neese knock off brands and don't worry when you blow apart 5 cameras to the cost of one of these.....lol
  • + 2
 索尼大法好。
  • + 3
 I second this
  • + 1
 Sweet more helmet cam!
  • - 1
 People still buy these things??
  • - 1
If ya can't see the vid pov like Gopro it's a FAIL..
