A quick update from Shelby Paget and Andrew Taylor at POM (Point of Me). Turn your iPhone 4 into the Ultimate POV camera!Hey Everyone!
Since the release of the POM on Kickstarter there has been a lot going on! First off, we want to thank all of you who have supported us this far, without you guys we would be nowhere! Since the birth of this project Andrew Taylor and I have been busy to say the least. We wanted to take this time to give you some updates as to what is going on with the POM and how you can support, follow us or order your own POM!
Kickstarter Video from Pom-Cam on Vimeo.
Recently Andrew went on an epic riding trip for a couple weeks and really got to put the POM through some rigorous conditions. Check out a clip below of the POM hitting rock bottom, literally, on an unexpected drop on Andrew’s helmet. Thankfully no one was hurt, nor was Andrew’s iPhone 4! This was a great testament to the time and consideration we had put into developing the housing to be as indestructible as possible. Goes to show how strong the POM housing is and helps gives you peace of mind when you’re using your beloved iPhone 4 to capture the gnarliest of shots!
Is the POM going to Protect my precious iPhone 4? from Pom-Cam on Vimeo.
Testing seems to be nonstop so far and the POM has been helping us produce some really sweet edits on the fly. It’s been awesome being able to capture some epic shots and then be able to edit them to music from iTunes and upload the video to the Internet before we’re even off our bikes. This past week many of the boys from Canada had invaded Santa Cruz and Andrew got some great footage riding with them at a few famous local spots. You can watch this video along with all of our other update videos on our pages below.
The POM will be coming to market soon and we can’t wait to see all of your POM adventures! Please continue your support and visit our Kickstarter Campaign Page to pre-order your POM today. Also, visit our Facebook Fan page and let us know what you think!

Jesus, Buddha, Mahomet, spread the message of revolution from within - take stuff into your own hands, don't be fooled by the devil, don't talk to him at all, he seduces the fools with gold and stuff. Do not gather commodities on this Earth. Then they talk about not showing off, keep your virtues to yourself, spread good by DEEDS not words (mov..khe kheee khem.) Jesus even said somewhere to not borrow the money... cunning man he was!
You see, if there's more people like you, our economy will die! Hindu will grow food only to themselves and they will have more than enough, Africans won't have to dig for Tin for IPads (like the one lying next to me). You want them to become independent nations?! You want that to happen?!!!
Are you high? What the f*@k does this have to do with Jesus Christ? You don't find the investment worth the return, don't invest. Why do you have to go on a ridiculous rant about it? Kudos to these guys for pushing for a product that they believe in, I know I never had the balls to pursue any of my "ideas." You talk about them like they are crooks. They do not take the money unless they meet their goal; and if they make the goal, then you get your return.
Like I said, if this not something you are interested in, then buzz the EF off. Damn man...people get so high and mighty behind an anonymous screen name.
sure, you can spend more money for super HQ HD images, but this is a way of leveraging your existing equipment and making it more versatile. I think the goal was to make a low cost way of allowing people to capture POV video, without having to buy a new dedicated POV camera.
I think there are some cool benefits to this system, like:
Playback- you can watch your clips on the lift, shuttle or at lunch without having to download them to a computer first.
Upload! - wouldn't it be cool to post your video clips while you're riding up the lift?
cost- not everyone can spring for a dedicated device..
improving video quality - okay, the video isn't as clear as some HD cams, but I'll bet'cha Apple is working on HD right now.
Just my two cents... It may not take over the world, but it opens the door to POV to people that may otherwise be left out for cost reasons.. I think it's a viable niche market, but perhaps not for everyone.. I'd love to get a DSLR too, but I've got my sights on a Carbon V-10 first. =)
btw, smart idea but i wouldnt buy it!
How the hell is the POM a low cost way of making people be able to capture video, POM charge $160 for there main package, and for that price you can buy a gopro.
TBH POM looks crap, to bulky and not many mounting options, also iphone 4's have shit video quality, i struggle to find out how they can even call it HD. Also, buy the time the iphone had decent HD, The whole design of the phone would have changed, meaning this case will be worthless,
I have both an iphone 4 and a gopro, and i would never consider buying this case to film on my iphone, worse comes to the worse, i will ducktape it to my bars/helmet and if it does break, i will just claim of the insurance!!
Now, can somebody please explain me, I honestly wish to know, no irony here I PROMISE! I truly don't get the idea.
Doesn't matter whether it is a GoPRO HD, contour HD, or this:
WHY WOULD SOMEONE WANT TO RECORD HIS RIDING? WHAT GOOD DOES THAT BRING TO ANYONE?
Are you kidding??
do you watch videos on pinkbike?
well theres a purpose for recording riding right there dumbass.
also some people want to really perfect there riding. that is impossible without going back and watching videos of you riding and seeing what your body is doing wrong.
some people on here are oh so naive
But why would you like to attach a camera to a helmet or a bike? Mhmh GoPro Hero... Isn't the word Hero the key to the answer?
I don't need to get over myself, I'm perfectly fine with my view of the world, it's awesome!
And Iphone is a crap because it is a very expensive toy, which in fact is very cheap considering the amount of pain and suffering it's production causes to the people in Africa and Asia. To amount of pollution to a finite planet that production of such toys bring. Waste of money it causes, that could be used on doing good to people that suffer from our stupid lust for commodities.
It's more than obvious to me that it's made not for businessman but for teenagers to browse for stuff to get into the "WANT WANT" state. To use social portals and free email where they get bombed with commercials. to turn their mind in to passive mode, so they are less likely to have time for thinking what is it that is important to do in life.
You don't want to continue that discussion if you want to keep your belief into Iphone and expensive toys.
Is that what they tell you? that technology and democracy saves people all over the world? that we save them giving them jobs? Indians in Brasil: some of them were convinced to start fishing to sell fish from Amazon considered super luxurious. They fished out everything, started starving now they spend these poor pennies they earned to import tuna! Awesooome! Or in India where farmers forced to use fertilizers and pesticides to produce food for us, because corporate wanted more production output. Food full of chemical stuff we eat and that will cause us cancer and other crap. These people were fine, it is we who made them poor.
You know why one of the main reasons Argentina has crisis? because after producing for us for longer time wages gone up. They became expensive, so corporate moved out, closed down factories, haven't asked anyone about anything. They exploited them with a straight purpose of doing so right from the beginning.
There are actualy people in Sudan in misery of sickness and terrible hunger. We don't give them jobs somehow... Calling Hitler an antichrist in that situation and stucking a finger into our arses whenever someone is talking about nazi or racism is a hipocricy. We f*ck the world and thus we f*ck ourselves, we do it mostly with buying way more that we need. Using a lot of stuff that is totaly useless for anybody.
Remember that: they made research on indigenous people all over the world: their levels of happiness are way above ours, they do physical work like making food/hunting for less than 5 hours a day.
Because every religion tells you this: don't desire, don't put trust in commodities, care for another human being, share what you have, and msot of all: You alone are able to free yourself. Because religion can tear down systems, just as Polish did with Communism. It gave our parents a push that together they can destroy any evil system. In 1970s Christain religion made a shift for the first time since the rise of Bysantine Empire. A shift from being the religion of powerful to the religion of the poor. rings a bell?
It's just that first you have to know you are in a trouble, and corporate are great in tell you, nothing's wrong just buy more.
People do not understand that there are limited recourses on this planet and we are extracting them, and creating by-products of waste and pollution faster than the earth can naturally recycle them back into resources. It is the idea that everyone needs to have the newest fastest and biggest product at the cheapest price whenever it is introduced to the markets that is driving these giant companies to destroy natural capital.
If people do not wake up and see how their actions have huge implications on the entire world the earth's systems will be destroyed.
I'm not saying don't buy new things, but consider the implications of where that product came from, how it was manufactured and the amount of resources it took to produce. If people start to take small steps towards conserving the planet we will be able to keep our standard of living the way it is.
Consider this: if you take the entire timeline of Earth (4.54 billion years) and condense it down to 1 billion years, the industrial era started about 5 minutes ago... and look how things have happened exponentially in that time period.
just my 2 cents
-looks far to bulky
-iphone video is shit anyway,
-iphones cost £400-+ so why would i want to mount that to my bike/helmet when i can use my gopro which costs less and shoots MUCH better video clips
-only water resistant, not water proof
-iphones are heavy,
And the main reason, this mount looks butt ugly!!
We have spent much time on R&D for the POM and are very aware that there are over 900,000,000 iPhone 4 users on the market PRE-Verizon iPhone 4 launch and majority of those users are in a contract of some sort for the next year or two. This market is fairly sizable and there is a lot of opportunity for a product like the POM. We do appreciate constructive criticism and those who have helped us on our way and definitely take to heart things that are of concern to the users and will respond accordingly. Whether that requires re-designing an aspect of the product or looking into various avenues to better meet the consumer's buying ability, our goal is make it accommodate the consumer's needs. We are fully aware of other great POV cameras on the market and don't intend for you to put yours down and go buy an iPhone 4 just to use our POM. We have designed the POM to compliment iPhone 4 users who already have an iPhone 4 and may not have a POV camera already. We are not trying, at this point we are doing, and the POM will be on the market soon. We appreciate everyone's feedback and I assure you it does not fall on deaf ears. We are riders just like yourselves, spending much of our time out at the trails, building, and checking out the latest cool gadgets and this is something that we've had a blast creating and using ourselves and have an opportunity to share it with others in the cycling world. If you like it awesome, we love the support! If it doesn't tickle your fancy that is fine as well, we are not demanding your money and we don't wish for anyone to feel that way. Thanks to all that have continually supported us and we look forward to these next coming weeks! Thanks - Shelby @ POM
Those that do probably have plenty of cash and enough to buy an iPhone likely have enough cash to buy a gopro, contour or other POV derivative.
Owners without plenty of cash probably wont be prepared to risk their 2/3yr contract handset.
iphone 4 owners - through my market assumption, own an iphone4 for either work productivity, prestige or because they like the 'coolest' gadgets. In turn, owners faced with a decision to own a case for their iphone or a dedicated camera will choose the dedicated solution 9 times out of 10.
I still stand by my congratulations of a good school design concept and will gladly eat my hat if this ever gets to market I'll eat 2 if it does get to market and through sales you even make it even close to recovering 10% of your investment ("life savings") spend on bringing this concept this far.
I honestly hope my skepticism drives you to succeed to prove me and other non-believers wrong.. but I think you're being led along a pass of financial loss.
Presumably there is a reason you haven't managed to get a bank loan and need capital generation through kickstarter is because its simply not a viable investment.
I honestly wish you all the best and hope for your sakes that I do have to eat my hat.
I think its unfair on the owners for me to falsely support something that's not going to make money. If I, like many others gave unrealistic positive - 'go for it! bromance' feedback which tainted the realism of getting this to market and making something of their idea then how fair would that be when the guys who have 5,000 units produced and then spend the next 10 years looking at them in their living room gathering dust.
Would I have given them false hope and in turn, caused them to lose money because of their business decision based on false feedback?
If on the other hand I lay out my honest feedback (which they can choose to ignore by all means) then at least they have something to consider when diving into the deep financial hole that is product development.
So, what's the most valuable comment?
Man, I love your idea - I'd buy one for all my friends! Lets hug and high 5 at the bottom of the trail when I've recorded our sick descent down that rad trail!
OR
Its not going to work because [insert whatever reason here] but good luck and I hope you prove me wrong!
As a side note, Under 1 million iphone4's sold pre verizon launch.. not 900 million.. see.. a simple error makes your business model look far better than it really is!
Again, best of luck!
Thanks for your feedback and we're excited to be a few steps closer in bringing the POM to market soon! I wanted to also address a few questions you guys bring up.
The POM is tested to be waterproof up to 3 meters at this point and will likely be enhanced for a deeper depth come final production stages. This depth is great for surfers, wakeboarders and rainy day rides on the moto or mtb.
Kickstarter is designed to help fund entrepreneurs' ideas by allowing the consumer to "pre-order" the product before it's been manufactured. This helps the product designer raise funds to cover manufacturing costs (i.e. tooling, molds, testing ect...) and allows the consumer to have no risk associated with the investment because they either will get a finished product if funding is met, OR Kickstarter won't even charge them if the funding goal is not met completely.
Hope you guys like our edits and we will continually be posting new ones up as we shred the gnar!

I personally wouldn't choose to use my iphone as a recording device, either in the park or on the trails. In fact i only take my phone with me if it is in a backpack when i'm riding, i always have.
The whole process of injection moulding is great and all but the iphone 5 is scheduled for summer 11 and the iphone 6 will equally be a year later. This therefore reduces the lifespan of product.
This is all just my opinion; its a pretty cool design with the integrated headphone jack, locking system and screen protector but i do feel think the negatives over power these features.
What are the comments at the top all about?! This is Pinkbike, not some sort of religious argument. Please don't argue on here it makes it a very unpleasant place.
1. Video looks jumpy and I feel motion sick watching it. Too top heavy and can't keep it still enough. GoPro is probably much lighter and stable.
2. I haven't checked into your price point, but I'd rather spend the money on a GoPro or Contour.
Hope you find the market your looking for and find success. If you were doing this 2 years ago, you may have it made but following on the heals of the competition is tough. The action sports media has been flooded with helmet cam (POV) footage in the past year or so and the market seems established with either Contour or GoPro. It would be like trying to come out with an mp3 player to compete with iPod.... who would buy anything else?
this is a BRILLIANT idea. but the numbers seem a little high for the start up money maybe its just me.
and also the fact that your date of when you stop collecting pledges is right around the anticipated release date of the iphone 5.. mistakenly chosen date on your part if you ask me.
I reallly want to see this happen. because well i want one.
i think a few simple changes need to be made in order for people to be interested tho.
the pledge needs to be not a money donation at this point but just you signing your name with the package you wish to pledge for because i think alot of people are going to the kick starter page seeing that theres only 5500+$ donated so far with only a couple months left and there afraid there giving money to something thats gonna end up not happening. maybe thats only my fear at this point but if it were just a sign up page my name would be on there with the 129$ pledge package.

On a seperate note:, the video quality is poor. the Iphone doesn't render imaging fast enough to view smooth action sports. It looks choppy. it needs a much faster processor. Probably great for your kids birthday party and that's it. GoPro HD is the way to go
I myself have been a GoPro (which is a great product) user before using the POM and have to admit that I was very surprised at how well the POM does actually film while riding moto or dj or dh. We've done comparisons side by side with raw clips and have found a lot of advantages in using the POM. If you're interested in hearing more about these comparisons please feel free to contact us. For those of you that do in fact like to make more detailed edits instead of just uploading your edits straight from your phone like the videos above, then you can actually refine the video quality with your choice of movie editors and produce a much a higher quality grade edit. Personally, I like just being able to share short clips of cool shots on my moto or dj and being able to share them on facebook myself and the POM allows me to do so very easily. Thanks for the feedback everyone!
Thanks,
Shelby @ POM
First : I seriously think it's a bit late...
Second : The cost of it. To be competitive, you will need to sell it to a cheap price, probably less than a 100$ (US). Higher than that, most people will want to go with the alternatives, which are GoPro and Contour since they offer an in-built everything, HD, fisheye (at least for GoPro) and water-resistant component.
Third : If you don't actually own an iPhone 4 (I don't have one), it will still be better to go GoPro or Contour since it will be overall cheaper and of higher quality than an iPhone 4 filming.
Fourth : POV are just to add to some films, not to film an entire sequence of it. The most beautiful and artistic films are either using 1 or 2 POV shots or none at all, like Life Cycles or whatever.
A little boost up would be to be able to lock the head-mount in a certain angle. Right now, as you show in your videos, the angle is not really good as we can't even see the jumps and/or landing. The camera is too high above ground.
That's just my 2cents though.
In the videos we've shot thus far we are happy with how the video has come out and the jiggling has not become an issue for us in our testing this far. As far as the cost goes, the phone is protected extremely well, but in the incident that something goes terribly wrong you can purchase insurance for your phone as I have for my phone from Verizon, this way if you were to break the phone it would cost less than replacing the phone with a competing POV camera. Another great thing about the iPhone is that every time you plug it into iTunes all your files are automatically backed up so you don't have to worry about losing any information if the POM somehow did not protect the phone from an impact.
Thanks!
Shelby @ POM
The cost to produce the item alone is over $20 and that's not including overhead of tooling/design. If you've been to any retail store as I have myself, to protect my phone they offer a clear sticker package that is $29.99, as well as plastic casings that don't have a protective screen cover, wide angle lens, any sort of mounting apparatus, and definitely don't protect your phone while surfing. These cases run anywhere from $39-$100 alone. With the capabilities and utility that the POM offers the price point is going to be much higher than your suggested $20/package. If you have questions please feel free to contact me directly and I can answer anything that might be confusing to you. Hope this helps!
Thanks,
Shelby
