PRESS RELEASE Kids Ride Shotgun

Riding with your toddler just got even more epic.

In case you missed it, last year, we released our new shotgun pro child seat. Built for kids 2-5 years, the pro seat was an evolution on their original shotgun mountain bike seat, featuring zero frame contact, and most importantly – quick release fitting.

Today we have released our new pro handlebars to match the pro seat, providing a rad-looking quick release handlebar option for mountain bike parents.

Shotgun Pro handlebars

Being quick release, the pro bars create an instant cockpit setup for your toddler, and most importantly, stop your little one from playing with your brakes or activating your dropper post whilst you shred the trails together.

The extra-wide bars feature custom undersized 19mm grips specifically designed for little hands, and incorporate the same styling from the pro seat.

The pro bars are available as a combo with the shotgun pro child seat, or stand alone for those with a child seat already - MSRP $70 USD.

Mountain bike parents can get them from their local bike shop, or learn more on the Kids Ride Shotgun website.

Road bike bar tape around the handlebars for kid grips inside the controls was free and kept the hands lower so their head doesn't smash your chin as soon.

Exactly what I’ve used for my boys.

 Yup. (Mac-ride)

I did the same, bit I can see the benefit of having the bars up higher. I almost sent my kids over the bars a few times while braking hard.

 @laksboy: same

Struggling to see the functional benefit with this one when kids can just hold on to the bars that are already there - just seems like something else to buy/carry around. I have the seat and it's great, but anyone with kids knows that you're trying to get this thing on or off as quickly as possible.

Look at how little the kids hand is able to wrap around the bar. Imagine that kid trying to fit their tiny hands around a 35mm bar clamp. Not feasible,
  • 13 2
Totally agree. Neither of my kids has had an issue using my handlebars.
  • 9 2
@ChanceFuller: My kids have the smallest hands possible and even at just 2 years old, this was never an issue.
  • 6 1
@ChanceFuller: most people’s experience including my own would suggest by the time a child is big enough to ride in front they’ll have no problem just holding onto the normal handle bars including 35mm diameter.

Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. Sharing my handlebars with my petite 2 yr old girl has worked just fine. Now having her mess with the brakes is a whole other thing!

I've got the kid handlebars and they're great.

Give my son his own thing to grab on to and be in charge of.

Before I got them he was constantly trying to grab cables or "help" me shift or brake.

I got bars like these (older version though) as the grips are less cold than the bike's handlebars.
  • 3 0
@ChanceFuller: look at the size of the grips from those handlebars, way bigger than 35mm bars. If you have ever seen a stacyc bike, those grips are crazy thick for kids. I had to shave the throttle sleeve down and they are still monsters.

I say this bar is just so Shot Gun can put out yet another option for making money, cant blame them there.

In cold temperatures, the aluminum handlebars will just get you kids hands colder. Put thick mits and they can’t get a good grip on the 35mm bars…. Quite easy to figure out.

@syncro: don't ride in the cold, you're right that was easy to figure out. my kids to big for a shotgun anyway and my next son I'll skip it as well and just him ride his strider until he can get on the stacyc.

There may not be a functional benefit, but they are not useless. I've ridden with and without them and prefer to have them on the bike. It gives the little one a feeling of ownership, and keeps them from messing with the controls. I also have a little bell mounted to the shotgun handlebars so my daughter can easily ring it. The added height also means she can have a bit better posture. We also ride in the winter on a fat bike and her hands are less likely to get as cold. She is now old enough to ride her own bike but not for long distances like when we ride to school and back so the seat is still coming in handy.

Can you put safety grips there in your handlebar ? I wouldn´t risk my kid to unfold a hand in a wet day or technicall section...

Cuz it's cute. Theyre mini bars. Just look at them.
  • 7 0
Raising the bars up puts the bar more in the little ones power zone. Otherwise on my bike the bars would be in my sons lap. Riding legit singletrack with your 2 year old and making memories is hard to put a price on.This genre of products are worth every penny.

@rmbarrows: Totally agree ! And the kids handle bars have grips which are comfortable,

The kids bars are excellent for helping them brace better when you go faster too !

When Im going to ride with my son on some steeper trails he prefers this tiny handlebars because he is more stable. So yeah I don't regret buying them.

Here's why I ended up buying the bars after trying the seat without them.

My kids hands always migrate further and further to the ends of my handlebars making it harder to turn because she's always holding and pulling the bars towards her as we ride. More so when the terrain gets a little more technical. Is it a big deal when you're just cruising in the driveway? No. But out on the trail, when you're going a little faster and making tighter turns it's a little annoying, and I'm not taking any risks that I don't need to safety-wise, so for $50 they're a good investment, just to maximize the fun as safely as possible. The shotgun bars keep your kids hands off your bars, close together, and prevents them from messing with your turning radius by adding unnecessary and unpredictable forces. And now that I don't have to get the tools out to mount and dismount the bars I'll use them even more.

Buy the bars.

@chriskneeland: good point, I noticed the same benefit... My son always wanted to grab my grips before we got the first Gen bar.
Also he's more upright with the bars which puts his center of gravity further back and makes his seating position safer. Granted his head is closer to my chin but I preferred that to having his weight too far forward

And sometimes you're just having a great time hauling butt with your kid and then you need to brake suddenly and hard. I would assume bars up higher would help keep them from nearly going over the bars and faceplanting on the front tire... Don't ask me how I know. Just trust me. The macride/shotgun dad-stage is the best, until they're 14 and kicking your butt at NICA practice.

I know this is an add for the kids handlebar and all but, where do I get an awesome model bike like that! I have seen them in Santa Cruz bike adds and all and want one so bad. Does anyone know where to get a good one like that?

The guy is on insta… his name is Tim chickomo (I think he’s Russian) or something like that, I asked him about making a SC nomad and it’s about $70 USD per model

An Adult version would be awesome for promo hot laps down the official rampage course, a real life experience pov of a pro rider - kinda like the old 2 seater F1 car hot laps they used to have.. but better. You could charge like $20 bucks per run or something...

I thought the original KRS bar was overpriced, but stuck it on my Christmas list anyway. My son does love having his own... but he'd be fine with bar tape if he didn't know better. The higher hand position might give the kid better leverage against being thrown forward under braking, but I'm no physicist

This was by far the best money I spent on my kids it terms of biking. Drop in the bucket for the smiles and thrills that were had for years. Then sold it to the next family to enjoy. (A very sad day for me as I knew they would never be on my bike again.)
Awesome product and sooooooo much family fun!!!

I have the old shotgun/Amazon kit and the seat is nice and low in the frame. In this new kit. The kid is raised up quite a lot and that would put her helmet right in my face. And those bars are really high too

I don't have the pro bars, but my kid loves having his own bars... he has a bell to ring to get people out of the way.

Is there an option for 800mm?
  • 4 0
The look on that kids face is priceless!

Nobody shreds in white air force ones! I think that kid might be a paid actor. I don't mean to throw baseless accusations but something about the lack of weight transfer in the handbike section gives him away!
  • 1 0
18 month olds are definitely breaking into the paid actor sector , great call!

And suddenly everyone realized that microshift released a kiddo product that actually meets the needs of the market...
