While we had enduro shredder Jonathan Maunsell with us in Switzerland for our recent All Mountain Precept shoot, we figured it was too good an opportunity not to utilize the small Irishman’s skill and speed to test the Precept 200 in the incredibly picturesque setting of the Crans-Montana bike park. The Precept 200 was practically built for the place, it handled multiple laps of the rugged DH tracks with aplomb and begged for more.

Inbounds with Kona s Precept 200

The Precept 200 (that’s 200mm of travel) is the ultimate bike for first time downhillers, or those on a bit of budget. It takes design cues from the Operator platform and rolls them into a more affordable package. Affordable doesn’t mean we skimped on the parts though, the Precept 200 features a RockShox Boxxer RC fork up front, the ever reliable RockShox Kage R shock out back, SRAM Guide R brakes and bombproof Truvativ Ruktion cranks.

Designed with geometry and suspension characteristics similar to our Operator platform, the Precept 200s Swinger Independent Suspension platform had its leverage rate curve refined to improve overall performance: more consistent in the beginning, with an overall more intuitive and predictable feel.

About Kona:
At Kona, we're all about the freedom and empowerment of the bicycle. We have been since 1988. We still have the same founding owners. We're still populated by a staff of keen, active, impassioned cyclists. We're not big, nor are we that small. Just a dedicated group of cyclists making bicycles for people who love bikes-no matter if that love is new or long established.

I'm glad that Kona is no longer in the days of the Stinky. They're finally making frames that I would ride.

Eh, shock is mounted to the frame differently, similar design though. But it is meant to be more of a FR bike.

Does look fun.

Also, jokes guys. Do you know what those are?

@TFreeman, We all know what a joke is. Your joke, sucked though, it happens to the best of us, keep your chin up.

Never been much of a Kona fan due to the looks of their frames, but this is a fine ass lookin bike Wink

The Stab series has won many World Cup championships, the Stinky series was one of the most popular frames back in the days and has been part of many historical moments. Just because some 13 years old kids hate on Kona doesn't mean it has ever been bad. Kona has always been progressive, but has always stayed a rider owned company and never went super-commercial. Actually if you'd compare the 2005 Coiler to modern enduro geometries, you will find the difference is nearly nothing (just need to buy a bigger size of the '05 Coiler). They have always been very progressive. The Honzo is another great example of pushing boundaries. Kona has been on top of the progression of mountainbikes a decade before most dumb 13 years old hater-kids were even born. The Stinky was a great frame for the time, don't forget the series go back more than a decade from now. I expect great things aswell from them in the present and in the future. Kona rocks.

@Mattin Kona has played an important role in mountain biking, that can't be argued against. Many of us started out on a Kona. But whenever I rode a Stinky or Coiler in the past, it just didn't feel good. Even my ancient Bighit of the same time period as the Stinky always felt much better.
  • 6 5
@mattin by many world championships do you mean more than 1, less than 3?
  • 12 3
@riggadon big hits were a pile of Shit the only reason people rode them was because they were cheap and absolutely bombproof so there was always loads of second hand big hits doing the rounds... 26 / 24 wheel combo, what was that about?

Kona bikes were the best 92 - 06 and with the process / operator they are right back up there again.

 @parallaxid

Forget about Roland Green? 2001, 2002 XC World Champ. I think that makes it more than 3, but less than 5. What's your definition of many?
  • 4 0
I guess its only Fabian Barel that won worlds I thought Tracy Mosely won too on a Kona but can't find the info. Have too agree with Mattin when I hear about progressive geo on enduro bikes with 65 degree head tubes I think about my 2007 Coil Air Supreme which was sold as an enduro bike 10 years ago now. Sure the bb was a little over 14 inches and the cs was 17.3 but it was slacker than most enduro's today and long and low for its time with great standover. A floating brake eliminated brake effects and it was bombproof. Damn I miss that bike.

hmm. As someone who rides a 26''/24'' Bighit in 2015, I feel some 'balance' is in order (pun intended..) I'm not sure anyone should lazily claim "they were shit" and just leave it there. Most 10 year old bikes, with the benefit of hindsight, will clearly be below par compared to today's crop, but i'd argue its the ACCESS that bike and similar alternatives during that era gave to the expensive FR/DH scene for so many of us that is the true legacy of old dogs like the Big Hit- remember that bike in particular wasn't marketed as a hyper fashionable racer (like everything MTB is marketed today), but as a fun Freeride bike of the day (and still is by the way). A debate on feel between a 2006 kona or BigHit is subjective and pointless-the bike building world had moved on. But there are still legion who need access to the hills without having to spend £5000 on f*cking wheels alone etc, I'm certainly still one of them, still after 15 years riding. I'd ride this Kona in a heartbeat if I was an emerging rider today

@choppertank3e: Moseley won a lot of stuff on Kona, but never managed higher than 2nd at the World Champs. Check out the Wiki. She rode from 2001-2008 for Kona. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracy_Moseley

Before everyone breaks keys on their keyboards trying to pump out their comment that has something to do with no 27.5 offering blah blah blah...

Kona really isn't in the bike scene to please keyboard warriors. Unfortunately this somewhat has caused an issue lol They do have a 27.5 Operator, the same one Connor Fearon is on right now, The reason you haven't seen a promo for it and it is not on their website is due to them not being completely happy with the finished product. Instead of just releasing the bike and hoping no one notices the bike just doesn't feel as good as previous operators they have decided to throw it back on the drawing board and have it ready for a late spring release.

They really should have put a note on their website that said something to the affect of "coming soon" but they didn't, probably like I said earlier, they don't care what you think and therefor.... they didn't.

As for the Precept 200... This is a sweet bike and honestly if you got a teenager who wants to get into riding its a great option and with older standards such as 26" wheels and what not you wont break the bank keeping your kid rolling after he blasts into a tree or what not.

I got one of these. Very planted bike. More confident on this than I have been on any other bike. I seem to point the bike where I want and it goes. Had to change the brakes because they are a piece of wank. Nice low bottom bracket. There is a lot of stigma about konas snapping. But the frame comes with a lifetime warranty. I will be changing the chain device in the new year as I like one with a bottom wheel

Nice to see that they still make twentysixers. Glad to know that I'm not running out of spare parts/tires in the near future =)
