Beyond the Bike: Cam McCaul

In every sport there are characters that stand out from the crowd. Perhaps they’re a bit more colorful than the rest. Maybe they’re louder, laugh easier, or are more creative. Or, if you’re Cameron McCaul you possess all of the aforementioned traits, but also show up to a Super Bowl party wearing an octopus hat and hot pink underwear with “I LOVE dicks,” boldly stated on the back. It’s not even weird, though, because it’s Cam, and while he does many things well, entertaining is right up there with biking.

First time I met and watched Cam ride I think he was 15. One thing was true then that's true now... purity. The dude has the pure soul of an mtb rider. Just a seriously good dude. And he was doing things he should not have been able to do. LOL! I love that he's talking about the Aptos Post Office jumps. Before he started riding there and he and a small group of guys started building it, it really was just an empty lot. It was a place with a mound of dirt. A few of us rode it and built a few hits but that's all it was. The kind of person that he is is what lived and bled in the dirt on that lot and you can see the effects of that rippling through the industry. I also love that he talks about his relationship with his dad and how that laid the groundwork for his passion for bikes. You could see that just driving down the street. LOL! Their house was on a corner of a downhill street that bled in to a busy one. They build a booter right on the corner of the driveway. It got larger as they got better. But I always used to think... damn those are chill parents to support that. Wasn't the safest place in the world to be sending it. LOL! To do what he and his brother do... gotta have support. Parents. Wives. Friends. They both have it because they deserve it. Proud to be from the same town as both of them.... all of them. This area is blowing up with amazingly talented largely due to those two.

"To think about legacy to much is to be quite fueled by ego, but if i were to think about the theme legacy, hope i did everything for the right reasons, and that's transparent"

Haha! I remember alot of qoutes from alot of different amazing people, but i never thought i'd have to write one down from a mountain biker!! Nicely said Cam.

Nice to get a window into Cams life, when you have a chance to watch someones riding from the very beginning you get to feel like you know the person. I think that without Cam and the Claw (and the companies which support them) freeride mountain biking would be way behind it's current market.

Meet him this year at the beggining of crankworx rotorua throughout the whole week he said HI to me and once even took the time to talk to me, it's so rare for a person of his greatness to say hi in the first place but to remember me is awesome, for this reason he is now in my top 5 favourite mtbers

I knew he was gold from all the interviews and media that I watched and then I watched him interact with my son. It was then I knew he was for real. Truly an inspiring character on and off the dirt.

I feel I have to same state of mind as Cam. From trail building, to helping kids to enjoy the sport, to spending and teaching my kid silly little things. I know I'm on borrowed time as well build our spot to ride and always think that the day we get it to that point where we are satisfied, it will all come to an end. But we still keep digging! I love that it bring the kids in my community out of there house and off of there "Video Games" to do something that keeps them in shape, as well as build their confidence. Most of the kids that I ride with can't afford a good bike so I help as many well mannered ones to get one. I'm always looking on Craig's list or pinkbike to find one for them. Even though I can't afford it, but I still think I get the better end of the bargain by seeing the joy it brings them and to see them progress their skills. My wife my not understand why I spend so much time on a bike, or how much joy it truely brings me, but that has always been and will be my happy place. It's hard to put in words to someone, in a way that they could understand it unless they have the same love and passion for it. I may not have 1% of the talent as Cam, but I feel our hearts are in the same place, to pass it to the next generation, pay it forward sort of speak. As Mike Flip, AKA (Draggon) once stated " If all I'm ever known for is riding my bike, that's fine with me" , holds true with me as well.
Thanks Cam for all you've done and all you continue to do for the sport. You are truely one in a trillion! You are an inspiration to all of us! God Bless You!

Cam is an awesome personality. Psyched to hear he is going to be announcing at FMB events (tho sorry he's not riding them). Always happy to see/hear him behind the mic.

Love this guy. Such a laid back character and always entertaining to watch on and off the bike. Wondered what was happening when he didn't do last years Rampage, and then noticed he wasn't showing up at comps, I assumed he just retired, but good to see the clarification on here. Unfortunately I stopped using twitter last year but before I did I noticed he'd also stopped tweeting very often too.

dude raced me for 2 miles to the beach in Jamaica 7 years ago after a tour day and he had a front flat on his trek. I was on a heckler and barely beat him by a few feet. Alol i can remember is how hard we laughed while riding and after. Miss that guy.

growing up in a town that has such iconic riders like Cam, Tyler Jaime Greg and many others has really influenced myself, as well as many other people I know to push our riding to the max. Much respect to Cam and his new family #teamdad

Dude I found it! Man that bugged me for three days straight! It's by The Landlines but I'm not exactly sure which one. All I know is that one of their songs "Wreckage" is really good. You'll have to find the other one on your own!
