Only What’s Necessary FR-01 First Ride

“So I had purposely waited for the wettest, muddiest, windiest evening in North wales that I could find to test the new OWN - Only What's Necessary FR-01 shoes. The test had to be in the conditions that the majority of my riding will be in for the next few months, wet and miserable but you learn to accept and enjoy it as it isn’t going to change for a good while yet. On the plus side it was a night ride and they are always fun no matter what!
With the Welsh weather in mind I purposely removed the Warm Weather Liner that comes fitted in the shoe, which is constructed in a lightweight breathable airmesh with a microfibre footbed with taped seam to stop any stones, dirt or much entering the liner for the much more suitable Cold Weather Liner which in contrast is constructed in a durable fleece liner with a softshell material, water tight taped seams with an internal weather resistant membrane. The liner is then treated with ‘Defender relent Systems’ Durable Water Resistant Coating for the ultimate Welsh weather shoe!
First thoughts, I thought I had the wrong size as I had a struggle getting the shoe on, but once I put some logical thinking into it the shoes pulled on fine, you have to remember that the Cold Weather Liner is supposed to be more snug fitting due to its water tightness and fleeced liner, admittedly this did feel a little odd walking around in them for the first time, but they were brand new out the box and a little stiff. Trying to put this thought to one side I got on to the bike and everything changed, my feet felt straight away cushioned, supported and at home. The first part of my ride was a big old forest climb and a good test to see if the FR-01s had any grip… They do, even in the nastiest of conditions they were planted, I felt clipped in and secure, not once did they slip out of place when the gradient got steeper. One thing I noticed when we had to open gates to cross through is that they didn’t slip on the wet grass they have a tread pattern on the front of the toe box and on the heel and it does work, admittedly there was minimal walking but what we did in the wet grass was really stable! Finally getting the to point the bike downhill and the FR-01s surprise me again, almost automatically putting your feet and ankles in the attack position with so much grip on the pedals it fills you with confidence but when you do need to lift a foot the Vibram soles don’t slow you down either.
When it comes to flat riding shoes I have been riding in one specific brand for a good few years now and I am prone to getting hotspots on my feet, with the FR-01s, nothing, nothing but comfort and confidence and the fact I have a summer and a winter shoe in one can only add to how good these shoes are, these are my favourite riding shoe and they will take a lot to be beaten I can guarantee that. “ – Lee
