Bootleg Canyon Ladies' Weekend

by Lindsay Beth Currier

Boulder City, Nevada - About 30 miles outside of Las Vegas, Bootleg Canyon is an excellent place to practice and become more comfortable with looser terrain and serious rock sections. Although an infamously rowdy venue, trails for all abilities, with scenic views of Lake Mead, do in-fact exist. All Mountain Cyclery, a well equipped mountain bike specific, service and retail shop is located on the main road, just below the canyon. The shop offers rental bikes from Specialized and a great protective gear selection.

Over the weekend of September 12th – 14th, two group rides and three skills clinics will be offered by Shine Riders Co, a womens mountain biking organization focused on inspiring more women to ride. Riders will be instructed on form & technique, including but not limited to braking, cornering, and conquering obstacles, greatly increasing confidence and control, on all types of soils and terrain. Riders will also be instructed on safety in the canyon and trail ettiquette. This event is an excellent opportunity to learn new skills, or brush up on old ones before venturing out to Zion National Park in Southern Utah for the Shine Rides Zion Trip (Sept 24th - 26th) and/or Shine SendHER September October 1st - 5th.

No-Drop Lower Lakes Loop Ride Departing at 3pm on both Friday and Satuday afternoon, this ride is perfect for all abilities. The ride is a great opportunity to meet like-minded women and gain free tips and knowledge from Lindsay, while enjoying views of Lake Mead from the rolling, flowy trail. The ride is free and all are welcome, but please RSVP so we can tell you where to meet.

Friday's FUNdamental Skills Clinic Our FUNdamental skills clinic covers proper form and techniques to maintain traction in variable terrain, and is best if this is your first time recieving professional skills coaching, or if you have not been coached in a while. Expect to learn about bike set-up, proper braking, shifting and pedaling methods, how to corner smoothly, and how to lift your front wheel and roll safely off a 12″ ledge. Bike of choice has 0-4” of rear travel. Riders must wear a helmet. Knee pads, gloves, and eyewear are highly reccommended. Elbow pads are always a good choice too.

Saturday's Enduro Clinic Our intermediate skills clinic is best for riders who have mastered the skills listed above and are ready to learn how to maneuver their bikes up and over obstacles. Obstacles may include rollers, ruts, rocks, and drops upto 24″. We will focus on making smooth line choices, riding and sessioning portions of Boy Scouts & Girlscouts, trails frequently used for Enduro and Super D races. A 4-6” travel bike, of any wheelsize, enduro specific helmet, and knee pads are mandatory. Elbow pads, chest and back protector are suggested.

Sundays Downhill Clinic Our downhill clinic covers similiar skills as Saturday, but will incorporate navigating drops and becoming comforatble with air time, as we move at a faster pace with the help of a little more gravity. After practicing in a controlled environment, we will ride Snake Back, a popular trail used for downhill races. This clinic is best for riders with experience riding a downhill specific bike and are already somewhat comforatble with rocks. A 7 - 8” downhill bike, fullface helmet, and full pads are mandatory.

So my helmet doesn't have provisions for goggles... Is this considered an all mountain helmet? I'm worried I wont be able to ride enduro with it...

It's chill, if they consider the Kali skate helmet adequate for what's on the poster you should be good to go. Don't forget the fanny pack though
