We first featured CompoTech’s (a division of Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic) Cduro carbon frame back in April, 2021. The unique construction earned the company an Innovation Awards Finalist in the sports, leisure, and recreation at the recent JEC World 2023 composite show held in Paris, France.

The manufacturing method uses Integrated Loop Technology (ILT) which continuously feeds fibers to an automated robotic arm that winds them around a mandrel, creating the tubes and lugs in one process.

CompoTech claims that their proprietary construction method for the CDuro frame is more productive than hand-building and more efficient in the use of materials. ILT is also said to result in stronger joints and eliminates unnecessary lamination around the joints. Other key benefits to note are the reduced machining and labor required after the winding process finishes.

There's no word on when or how you can buy a CDuro frame yet, but we've reached out to ask for an update on availability.

Can't say I'm a huge fan of the looks, but with a little tweaking, this technology cold make some gorgeous frames. Well done guys.

Really cool! I'd love to see a video of the process. A quick google search turned up a video of 3T doing something similar with road bikes but I'm really curious about how everything is put together

3t does dry winding. This one is different
  • 3 0
@JasperTS: thanks for the clarification. What’s the difference?

@dreamlink87: it seems like he can't give friendly information but only correct people who are wrong. As I'd like to know more too:

@JasperTS there is no difference between their process and 3T dry winding!

@dreamlink87: 3t does use dry fibers and infuse them later (this seems to use wetted fibers(but not sure))

main difference is the ability to lay down 0° fiber orientation and they create loops at the end enhancing the mechanical connection between tubes.

where was i not friendly?

PS. not all winding is equal. Compotechs use of a aditional axis or axises(dont know the plural in english) allows addition of fiberes in 0° and non rotational symetric lay ups

technology is awesome, although it looks a little weird. I think the top tube and seat stay being tilted away from each other, rather than being parallel (like a transition sentinel) or tilted towards each other (like a trek slash) gives it a bit of an ungainly appearance.

It looks great and much less wasteful than the traditional carbon layup process. There is a lot of potential here. That frame could look magnificent with some high gloss clear coat. Most of the info i could find online is about 3T using this process.

That headtube looks comically long. The top tube looks comically high. The rear triangle looks comically tiny. -Armchair Designer

Easier, cheaper, less material and waste! Maybe this will bring the cost down of a carbon mountainbike from the price of a new Honda Civic to...a used Honda Civic!

Check out their geometry table aswell. 500mm reach on a size medium. Interesting stuff.
